I completely agree. A big reason I’m not a major fan of comic books is because the story never ends. It’s continuous, and eventually, you get tired of not having a conclusion. That is what the movie industry has become. When stories never have endings, people eventually lose interest. I think it’s one of the reasons for the box office declines the last few years and why Barbie/Oppenheimer did so well…people finally got big budget movies that were something new that also had conclusions.

The Hunt for Gollum will be as much of a failure as the Hobbit movies (most likely even worse). The problem with Hobbit movies is Jackson (not the studio) decided to make a 300 page book into 3 movies. Despite what people say on the internet (they are wrong), Jackson is on record saying it was his idea to make 3 movies instead of 2 movies. In fact he had to fly over the studio execs to persuade them to allow him to do 3 movies. People think Jackson is infallible, but he clearly makes mistakes and theyre much more noticable in the Hobbit movies. People just transfer the blame over to the faceless studios because they can't accept that Jackson can do wrong.
@anni.68
@anni.68 14 дней назад
The problem of the Hobbit is not that it is 3 movies. The problem is the overuse of CGI and the endless, silly battle scenes. They could have used the time for better things like e.g. more character development or more about the background story and the time before the Dwarves actually come to the Shire and meet Bilbo (e.g. Gandalf's and Thorin's meeting in the Blue Mountains) or more about Beorn and the White Council and about the Woodland Elves.

@sameehkins5957
@sameehkins5957 14 дней назад
@@anni.68 the "Silly battle scenes" and the "3 movie idea" are both related. Jackson's excuse for making it into 3 movies was "because their was too much footage".... e.g there was filler stuff like excessive battle scenes, plot derailment to include love triangle nonsense that adds nothing, unlikeable characters like Alfrid who had no reason for existing.
@anni.68
@anni.68 13 дней назад
@@sameehkins5957 As I said, they could have used the time for other things. I agree about Alfrid, but I do not mind the love triangle. It's an interesting idea. And it's funny that all of Tolkien's great stories have a love triangle. SerIously, every single one!

Its not just that they would be making it up and it wouldn't have anything to do with the book/story any longer. Its also that I have exactly zero faith in modern hollywood writers to create anything of quality entirely from their own minds. Its rare even to see these people be able to adapt a story thats already been written for them in any coherent way. How many series have even managed that? But I certainly don't think anyone is going to be writing anything interesting or compelling or narratively sound based on ideas sprung from their own minds. Not in 2024.

The Fan movie "The Hunt for Gollum" is back online. _Somebody_ in Warner Brothers made a wrong decision and they immediately corrected it. I read Tolkien since 40 years. I absolutely looove his books and I absolutely _want_ to see good Middle-earth fan fiction! What's the problem? It's Middle-earth, a complete, very busy world with thousands of years of history and millions of inhabitants. Why should any Tolkien Fan _not_ wish to see a movie/movies about the adventures of Aragorn before the events of LOTR? Aragorn _did_ go on the hunt for Gollum and I want to see it. I want to see a movie about the Blue Wizards, the migration of the Hobbits from the Anduin to the Shire, about the people who worked in the Houses of Healing, about Eorl the Young and Cirion, Stewart of Gondor, and the founding of Rohan and a series about the complete life of Cirdan the Shipwright. Just because Tolkien did not have the time to write about these things does not mean that these stories are not worth to be told. Quite the contrary. And Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh are back for "The Hunt for Gollum", too. They are fantastic writers.

The works of JRR Tolkien will remain as they were no matter how much additional content the corporate world tries to milk out of their film and tv rights. Mariko is dead, her death was a redemption of honor for her and her family. She did it with all the grace and high honor possible. She also acknowledged her love for Blackthorne knowing that he would be devastated by her death but would respect her decision and action. There's another 50+ years of history directly relating to the historical figures the Shogun characters are based on. A sequel with such a talented cast and production is a good thing as far as I am concerned... and yes, I've read the novel. There's plenty of future historical material for Torunaga/Tokugawa, Blackthorne/Adams, and several of the other characters as well. Not to mention the collapse of the Catholic church in Japan, exclusive trade agreements with the Dutch, and at least one major battle (Siege of Osaka Castle) in the cards during the early stages of the Tokugawa Shogunate. As for the LotR thing... yeah, I'm a little more confused and apprehensive when it comes to that one, but with Serkis and PJ attached, it's got to be better than Rings of Power right?

Wouldn't most of the Planet of the Apes movies or the MCU qualify as fan fiction too under your definition?

Since when does Disney respect source material!? Not to be too harsh but you were just being naive right there.

"Which path would lead to the least lives lost"? xD Did you even READ the book? Lol, at one point, Toranaga threatened to kill a whole village if they didn't teach Anjin-san the Japanese language in 6 months. And you could die for a lot lesser offenses, such as not bowing correctly. You've GOT to be kidding me if you think he's worried about the lives lost. Nothing in the book suggests a care for the lives lost EVER.

You keep saying that the show runners were faithful to the book? Untrue! Other than the names, they completely re-wrote almost everything. Not for the better! I am not saying it was not good. It was! Just not faithful to the book. Be well, stay safe!

Damn you licensing mess 😂 As much as I don't expect the Hunt for Golem movie to be good, let's face it, it's ultimately the licensing mess that is causing all this Tolkien fan fiction to be created in the first place. Perhaps some day, a studio will throw a dump truck full of money to Tolkien's family so that some decent first/second age movies can be made. In the meantime maybe it's time for some Malazan movies. At least there is a lot of source material and computer CGI is good enough to pull it off assuming it is given to someone competent enough to bring it to the screen.

I treasure Tolkien's books, and I want to see as many adaptations of as many Middle-earth stories as possible. Canon and fan fiction! Without fan fiction we would never get a movie about Aragorn's adventures in Rohan, Rhun and Harad or about the Blue Wizards or about the life of Cirdan. Actually...big cheers for every well-written, passionate Middle-earth fan fiction! And big cheers for every badly written, passionate fan fiction and fan movie, too. Not everybody is a gifted writer, but everybody can be passionate about Middle-earth.

Studio makes a movie, I watch it or I don't. Instead lets join the negative side of social media and predict the demise of a rumoured show. After all, it will be the only bad show, or poor decision a studio will make between now and then. Let the lord of chaos rule.

Hot take but I'm a fan of the LOTR books and I hated rings of power and the hobbit was mid. However I am also a film and television fan, I am OK with fan fiction if it is done well. If a show is good then it's good. Now fan fiction is rarely good but if a show is well made, well written, and well acted then I can enjoy it. Obviously I don't consider it canon but why should I complain about an original story in a world I love if it's we'll done. That being said I often find myself complaining because fan fiction projects are rarely good. But I'm not one to hate on a genuinely good show or film just because it's not based directly on an original source.
