SM GPS Logger - Stand-Alone Modification

In this video I will show you how I made a stand-alone modification of my SM GPS Logger 3 from SM-Modellbau. The GPS Logger 3 is used for RC models and normally intended to be connected and powered by the telemetry port of the receiver. However I had the need to use it in a stand-alone mode powered by a small 1 cell LiPo battery. The video will show you in detail how I made this modification.
The list of all used material and a link to my free STL files for the 3d printed cases is provided below.

Print settings for both cases:
Layer Height: 0.2mm
Infill: 20%
Supports: On
Note: If your case will be exposed to sunlight I recommend using white filament. Dark filament (especially black) will heat up a lot in direct sunlight and warp the part (main risk is for the cover of the case)

LOL. It's always a joy watching your very meticulous and precise (ie - very German! 😉) builds and contrasting them with our chainsaw and axe constructions. 😱😊 Oh, but to get 1 over on you 😈- at about 9.05 you (incorrectly?) give the power consumption for this excellent unit as 60 milliAmp Hours - should be 60 milliAmps? 😉 The specs seem to say that the GPS logger will run down to 3.6v so that makes your limiting of usage time to 2-3 hours out of a 600mah battery fairly conservative - though probably wise considering that those are Chinese mahs. 😜😁 Another thumbs up video!

Thanks buddy! Happy that you liked the video which was a bit of a different format as I am not building or flying a plane but focusing on one equipment. Not totally sure for the milliAmps (I know why I was focusing on mechanical engineering at university and not electrical engineering 😉). I would say we are both right, during 1 hour it will consume 60mAh of energy which means the average current during 1 hour would be 60mA. The 2-3 hours are really on the safe side. I started with a 400 mAh battery and during winter I noticed that the cold temperatures had quite a negative impact on the battery. On top I have the impression that from time to time the logger seems to have small peaks in power consumption which make the voltage of the battery drop a bit. For my 400 mAh battery the logger quit after about 100 minutes in such cold conditions. Therefore 2-3 hours for the bigger battery seems to be on the safe side. And yes Chinese mAh count different 😂 Always enjoying your comments from down under and I really love your sense of humor 👍 I am sure you could make a great RU-vid channel, at least I would love to see your "chainsaw and axe" constructions which I think are far from what you want to make me believe 😉 Cheers Robert

Moin, super Video. Der Logger 3 ist wirklich ein super Teil. Leider noch nichts fürs GPS Triangel fliegen. PS. Warum hatte ich deinen Kanal eigentlich nicht nicht abonniert??? 😮😮😮 Naja, besser spät als nie 😀

Servus, schön dass dir das Video gefallen hat. Das GPS Triangel fliegen ist schon ein recht spezieller Anwendungszweck. Ich weiß aber nicht wirklich viel über die Wettbewerbsform. Man muss dabei ein Dreieck abfliegen und das auf Zeit, oder? Vielen Dank übrigens fürs Abo 🤩

@@bavarian_rc Fast 😃 Kurz gesagt geht's darum, aus max 400m Höhe in 30 Minuten so viele Dreiecke abzufliegen wie es geht (gibt mehrere Klassen, mit Unterschiedlichen Werten was Ausgangshöhe, Dreiecksgröße etc. angeht). Ohne Thermik kommt man vll drei mal rum. Die besten schaffen über 20 Runden. Es geht also darum Thermik zu finden und möglichst effizient zu kurbeln und exakt ums Dreieck zu fliegen, um möglichst wenig Meter zu verschenken. Das macht wirklich super viel Spaß und ist eine schöne Herausforderung für Segelflieger.

Klingt wirklich spannend. Dabei 20 Runden zu fliegen kann ich mir kaum vorstellen. Thermikfliegen ist etwas was mir auch sehr viel Spaß macht. Werde mir als nächstes die Thermikflächen zu meinem Triple Neo bauen. Ich hab mir gerade deine Erklärvideos zum Triangel fliegen angeschaut. Super erklärt und klasse gemacht. Ich hab natürlich gleich ein Abo da gelassen 😃 🙌
