Teresa, while my husband never said we didn't need all the stuff I was stocking, (he always lets me do my thing), last year he finally got it and is now on board. While everyone was on the search for TP, we had plenty, because I buy a big package 2x a month. Hang in there. He'll either get it or he won't. But you know you'll be prepared when you need it. Be safe, Be prepared, Be blessed.

Yes I agree I’ve always been the same, finally have the tight place, just moved to 20 acres and a 3000sq ft cabin in the woods and I have so many plans, chickens garden etc even took a spare bedroom for nothing but a pantry! I’m always adding to it, worse case scenario, it goes to the mission at some point and other people eat it! In the meantime it’s the greatest feeling in the world to have an abundance of food no matter what might happen even if it’s nothing I could go months eating off what we have and I don’t have to run into town all the time!

My Daddy was one of 10 kids raised up in mountains of Tenn. My maternal grandma was one of 13 kids. I was oldest girl of five children. Helped grow our own food, was taught by grandma and mom how to cook and be prepared. I married a city boy but he loved outdoors and we moved to country. He was amazed at me keeping a pantry and planting our gardens. Did it for our 30 years of married lifetime. After he passed, I had to sell our country home and so I moved closer to family. When covid hit America, my nephews, all former military and outdoorsmen, came to visit me and suggested I "start a pantry" I laughed and showed them my filled cupboards, filled pantry, all organized, dated labelled and canned goods, dried foods, spices, drink mixes, my packed freezer too, and stored buckets, and last but not least...my candles, keresene lamps, batteries, matches, lighters, tools etc....and cleaned guns and extra ammo. They were grinning, proud of their country Aunt. I told them I couldnt sleep at night if I didnt do a pantry! My husband and I heated our home with wood stove then upgraded to a wood furnace as we aged. We went thru blizzards, job layoffs and hard times...we hunte and fished and put up everything we could do. It was security and reassurance for us. I loved your pantry and got ideas for other things to pick up tomorrow! I have put enough things back for my siblings and their children and grandchildren. I also put in two raised garden beds and added backdoor herb garden the first week I moved to city... I am so grateful to my elders for teaching me these skills. I am trying to pass these skills on too. Your pantry was amazing! Bravo, country gal!

Sadly my NC dad, tho 1 of 10 and his mama being 1 of 10, did not embrace rustic living They were poooor. My grandaddy was a drunk who was also legally blind. All the kids thumbed their noses at their heritage of diy and being stacked up.

My late Mom (99) was brought up during the Great Depression and WWII. She always bought ahead and taught me to do the same. Unfortunately, I had mice last year and had to get rid of most of our stored food. I have been slowly replacing it. I keep doing the same with our freezer.

I'm glad I found a channel with a real person who represents values that mirror my own. I learned the value of a stocked pantry from my grandmother. She taught me how to grow a garden, can, sew and quilt. Thank God for my grandmother. The things she taught me have guided my life and helped me raise a family. In a world that worships technology, the skills you have are being lost and forgotten. I've tried to pass those skills and knowledge along to my own children but they are uninterested. Many a time when they were children we had unexpected expenses that popped up. Thank God I knew how to stock a pantry. We never went hungry or had to do without because of what my grandmother taught me. Be prepared because you never know what life will throw at you.

I have been accused of being a prepper because I keep things stocked in my pantry and freezers. I have been so broke I didn't know where our next meal is coming from. I swore I would NEVER be there again in my life. I have about 16 lbs of ground beef in my deep freeze,my local store has it on sale for $1.99 a lb so I'll be going tomorrow and getting 10-20 lbs. When something is on sale I get it even if I have a good supply on hand.

right, I went grocery shopping today, about 300 dollars worth and some would think oh my god that's a lot and what are you doing? I replaced all that I've slowly used up since I've prepped all of that food for a few years now. I don't waste a thing. I cook what I need, and then freeze what i don't for a later date. I have a male friend who doesn't live my way he's always running out to the grocery store each day. EACH DAY! i don't have too do that, I've got enough food for 3 months without going to the grocery store. Yes, for Dairy and eggs, I do that weekly but everything else is either grown by me or picked out to make a head and I have a meal plan so I don't have to worry. he worries each week.

I'm not a prepper but I've been broke a time or too in my life but having two months or more of food in-store means I never had to worry. Prepper is a new term to describe how most everybody used to live.you put all of each kind of food by while it was in season. Same for fruits. Hogs were butchered in the fall for cured ham and bacon and sausage and for the lard as well. Beans and corn and flour or wheat you bought at harvest time and you bought by the hundred weight not by 6 or 8 ounce bags.

How sweet of you to go through your whole pantry to show us what a true pantry should be…thank you. I was always picked on and called a hoarder for doing just what you do. I just never felt secure if I didn’t have all the basics to make condiments and seasonings and baking supplies. Some store bought sweets but always stored cake and pudding mixes. I also keep all the basic medicines and herbs and first aid. Growing up I ever knew if I was getting anything to eat except for lunch at school. For years it was my main meal of the day. Probably why I never felt secure if the cabinets weren’t full.

Miss Lori, don't ever feel the need to apologize for sharing your knowledge and your ways with us. It helps more than you know. Just seeing the labels and brands of items you purchase is helpful. I've been searching for a good brand of dried milk, buttermilk and cream and you showed that today. Things I had not thought to stock up on, you showed today and gave reasons for having these things on hand. Even the ways you take advantage of the space you have is helpful. I live alone in a small apartment with very little storage space and you give such great storage ideas. And I felt so vindicated when I saw your canned chicken breast! LOL I buy that ALL the time! It makes great soups, pasta dishes, sandwich spreads. My freezer is about the size of a bread box, so I'm limited on that and the canned meats really helps. I'm sorry for being so long-winded, but I just want you to know how helpful videos like this are. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us all after a long day and teaching us a few new tricks. Love and hugs! Oh, and I didn't see not one speck of dust!

Ms. Lorie, I saw a all white Wolly Bear Caterpillar recently. Something I've never seen before. Folk lore has it that a white Wolly Bear foretells lots of snow and blizzard conditions. I've also had a prophetic dream about the coming winter, and it's going to be real bad. So, from my standpoint, your video here is an excellent reminder of what I need to do to get ready for what's coming. Normally I dry my own herbs and go hunting for wild plants for teas and medicinal applications, as well as can produce from our garden, but we recently lost our home and land and thus the ability to do all that. We go to a weekly free food pantry and God bless them, they make sure to supply lots of beans and rice, peanut butter, dried milk and dried fruits, juices and what have you. We are busting with a huge reserve, and after that dream, the Wolly Bear, and now your video, I have no doubt that this winter will be such as you and I have never seen in our life time. God bless you, Ms. Lori.

It is very comforting and warm to listen to you describe how you live and what you do with your different foods and I find it fascinating. I know I learned a lot from this video. There were lots of things you have that I didn’t know about like the dehydrated hash brown potatoes and green chili powder. I’m from Texas so you know I love green chilies. Yum Yum. You are such a fascinating person and the world would be a better place if there were more people like you in it. It was so kind of you to make this video after you worked all day and I know you were really really tired. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciated you taking the time to go through everything and tell us what you do with a lot of it. I think those buckets are very useful and good. Four dollars is enough to pay for a bucket if you ask me. Those keep things very safe and fresh. I read one time that if you wanted to keep mice out of your stuff you had to use metal containers. How do you keep the mice from sneaking in when it gets cold? oops I’ve got sidetracked. I worry about mice because I hate them so much. I think maybe peppermint oil keeps them away if you put it by your doors but I don’t know for sure. since you live in the woods maybe you could tell us how to keep those varmints outside where they belong. I was also wondering how you make sure the yeast stays alive.

When I cook and I decide I want a certain meal I like to have all the ingredients on hand. I dislike going to the grocery store , so if I see something I know I will use and it’s on sale I will buy it. I hate to start a recipe and lack something that goes in it. I see your point . I make a garden and I can and freeze, it taste so much better. I love gardening, I just love seeing a tiny seed planted in the sod and wait to see what God can do. His gifts I do not take for granted. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Miss Lori, I come from the Northwest of England and my parents would have loved your pantry, I love it too! My parents were war babies, that’s where their “hoarding” habits came from, bread rationing was still on the year I was born, in 1957. We have always teased them about having 30 cans of of corned beef & Spam in the cupboard, but guess what? I’m now a hoarder of certain things, myself. When the Covid lockdown came around, I was fine until the Government got to sending out “emergency rations” to those like me, who are considered extremely vulnerable. (In fact, I gave my emergency rations to a neighbour, who works so hard, and such long hours, the shop shelves were always empty) I was able to make lots of bread to give away, I have cupboards so full that even when I could start shopping online, I still had bread flour, yeast & sourdough starter, cans of everything that came in cans, & my freezer was busting at the seams. I knew I’d learned a lot from both my parents, but I didn’t realise what a good housekeeper I’d learned to be in a crisis. I LOVE the idea of dried sourdough starter! How do you do that?? I mean, I can make my own, but love the idea of emergency supplies of dehydrated sourdough starter!! Another thing I don’t seem to see here in the UK is dried whole milk, I must try Amazon! I’m so very glad I found you. Stay well, you & Mr Brown. I’ll be back!

Thank you for sharing ❤️ I have learned a lot. I had a period in my childhood that we didn't have a lot food. (And is why I now have to have a party and fridge and freezer full. Sometimes maybe a little to much) Then went to live with my grandparents and they taught me a lot how to grow a garden, can food, take care of farm animals and put them in the freezer. I am very thankful and appreciate all they taught me. God bless.

My childhood family was 5 children and parents and grandma. My Southern Daddy had come from a very poor Tenn. mountain childhood, with 5 brothers and 4 sisters. He taught us how to have big garden for food. He hunted and fished. My maternal grandma was one of 13 children in her childhhood home...so in our family, we just always were working garden, putting up a pantry and canning, freezing...doing big pantry. I married a man who had been raised in city. Never heard of pantry, never had done garden. He loved hunting and fishing, which he learned from his granddad, who was from W. Virginia. So...we moved to very rural area, I did garden with his help, and then a pantry. He was amazed how good it tasted, how much we could grow...and he LOVED pantry. So for 30 years, we "prepped" without knowing it was a "new, cool idea" for younger people. We saw it as piece of mind, a savings, and good eating! I am a widow now, and when covid started, my younger neices and nephews came to me, concerned if I had a need for groceries and were lecturing me about going getting extra supplies. I let them talk ....then showed them my pantry...with at least a year or two supply of food. Their mouths dropped open in shock. I told them how we had lived...they asked me to help them create pantries. lol!

Miss Lorie, your yeast will keep indefinately in the freezer, once out, keep it refrigerated and will keep for 6 months or so, just proof it to be sure. I just got my dehydrated sour dough reactivated for winter. We butchered turkeys Sat. and I cooked up the carcasses of two that got way to big, so cut them up for the freezer, anyway we now have broth to can and picked off enough meat for supper( turkey tetrazini) and the vacuum sealed bags of meat. We have a very similar pantry, only larger because we have the room. You are crazy smart, like a fox. Thank you for sharing, I'm sure this helps others to see what you may want to have on hand.

I was raised the same way we grew garden we killed our own meat we had food for ourselves and anybody else that was doing with that we fed and fed and fed people year after year and never regretted it. We never ran out of food no matter what happened and we went through some hard hard times and cold freezing winters and hot drought summers. And I’ve always been a food prepper/old-fashioned myself after I married and had a great income compared to the average person. I never let my cabinets and storage areas get low and empty and it always paid off. I think you are a very intelligent woman and this is the type of woman that proverbs 31 describes because she takes care of her husband her family and they don’t have need of anything.

Far from being too long, I am going to be watching this video again with pen and paper in hand, because my memory is so bad, and there were several things I wanted to remember, but I was making deviled eggs and my hands were too icky to take notes. For one thing, I am determined this year to have an herb garden and dry my own herbs. But, I did want to comment on a few things. The word prepper is one. It's become such a loaded word it seems, and while some people do take it to the extreme end of extreme, in general it just means someone who lives with forethought. It used to be, our lives depended on forethought, on being prepared for as many contingencies as possible. About barley, it is the lowest of all grains on the glycemic index, so it is a much better option than noodles and rice and other grains if you're watching your blood sugar, and a little goes a long way. About canning beans; like you said, having them in the jar is a quick warm-up for dinner, but I think it's important to note in emergencies, cooking dry beans takes a lot of fuel. Much better to have an emergency supply of canned beans always on hand. I know it was tiring to make such a long video, but I am glad it wasn't in two parts. Great flow, and I enjoyed every second. Thank you so much!

God Bless Your Soul Miss Lori (and Pa Brown too). During her married life, my mother never did canning or preserving. Once a year, she would buy a half a cow and put it in the freezer. She also had a small garden and her green beans grew prolifically. At least as a child, in the summertime it seemed like she was forever blanching green beens. They too went in the freezer. And when it was time to harvest peaches she would buy a few bushel baskets and put them up in that magical buldging freezer too. Whether she knew how or not, she never canned, dehydrated, or pickled anything. My mother was an outstanding cook and a pretty good baker too. While financial times were very difficult in our home, we never went hungry. I on the other hand (and especially in these times) feel like a farmers wife at harvest time - all the time. I want to thank you for showing us your method of starting sourdough starter. I am grateful. I am also very interested in one of your buckets, Miss Vicky sent you some dehydrated starter. I do not bake every day, but do not want to get caught without a leavening agent. This sounds like a great way to put some back. How do you rejuvinate the culture? Thank you again Sincerely Fay (shalom168) North Central Ohio

I absolutely love "Old Alabama Gardner" videos. You're right - he's just plain old everyday wise. And he's comical at the end. Anyhow - I always thought that a pantry needed to be in a "cool" dark place, like in a basement, or a cellar. And putting food up high, where the heat always goes, was not good for storing foods that have been put up. But, I get it - you've got a small space, and you are using the space that you have.

I wish I hadn't stopped watching your videos, this is due to your calm and caring nature. So I have a year of videos to binge. Have you ever thought about investing in solar panels for your fridge and freezers if you were to lose power? Plus it would be a shame if you were to lose everything in your freezers. Sure a generator will keep it all going.... as long as you have fuel. The way prices are going up on fuel it can become an issue... Send you love and hugs from Denmark. 🇩🇰
