*Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on Outdoor Power Equipment. Manuals can be found at the manufacturers website.*
Solenoid fuel shut off valves are used to close the main jet or main fuel circuit in the carburetor when the key is turned off. The solenoid valve works by using a spring loaded plunger to press against the main fuel circuit passage and prevent fuel from entering the passage. When the key is turned on a magnetic field is generated in the solenoid and the plunger is pulled into the body of the solenoid, thus opening the main fuel circuit. By closing the main fuel circuit when the key is turned off, the fuel in the carburetor is prevented from entering the engine, and this prevents unburned fuel from entering the engine while it is shutting down, and this helps prevent engine back fires.
When the engine is stored with fuel in the carburetor for long periods, there is a risk of the old fuel causing contamination and corrosion to develop on the solenoid plunger causing it to freeze and no long move freely. When this happens the plunger is stuck in the fully extended position, and this closes off the main fuel circuit not allowing fuel to enter the engine when the key is turned on, and this prevents the engine from starting.

Scratching my head for two days I came across this video. Sure enough the grit in the solenoid was preventing it from moving. Cleaned it up and my tractor fired right up. Thanks so much!

Update,this was my problem after all! Solenoid was frozen up upon removing. disassembled, cleaned & tested...just like new again & machine fired right up. Saved me just over $102 just for this particular solenoid, thanks again for sharing this video!

I watched this video after fighting the exact same engine all day. My motor would start and run off of starting fluid but would not run on high idle or start without the fluid. I ran back out and pulled the solenoid out and sure enough it was stopped up. I cleaned it up and got it working again. Put it back in and the mower fired right up and ran great. Awesome video and thanks for the help.

How did you get it unstuck? Mine camexwith Kohler carb that I got online and paid $200. I hate to replace solenoid with knockoff part but it has sat for several years and is really stuck. I even question if it ever moved as it looks different than video, it has brass cap that screws off and holes on side appear to be blocked. I'm stuck!!!

Just bypass it, remove that valve put the selenoid back with out it and it will work fine, mine has 3 years working perfectly fine with out it

My father gave me his 2011 Cub Cadet LTX 1450 that wouldn't start. The mower had sat fully fueled for 2+ years before he broke down and wanted me to get rid of it. I ran through the maintenance checklist and replaced everything (since it had never been) like plugs, air/fuel/oil filters, belts, blades, battery, etc. When I got it all together and fired it it would crank till next week but never catch. 2+2 didn't help, hell. I even took this solenoid off and because I didn't know what it was didn't know how to test it. Just got back in and am happy to report that was the problem! The plunger was crusted to the solenoid body and wouldn't retract when energized. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this explanation!

This rocks. If you have a fuel supply problem do this first and save yourself a lot of hassle. I went from the tank to the carb as suggested by others and replaced all those items in the fuel line. Finally got to this. Start here as modern fuefs clog this up first.

Thank you. This is a good place for me to start. I'll be checking out my Kohler 20 HP solenoid fuel shut off. I think this might be the problem I'm having because, although it's difficult to start, I can usually get it started, and it runs fine. However, when I shut it down, I am getting a bit of a latent backfire.

I too had this problem four years ago before I started doing my own work. They told me it was the fuel shutoff solenoid. Then they said they couldnt get the part unless they ordered the whole carb. They shafted me $600 for the repair and it was down for two weeks. Needless to say I wont be going back there again. I can do it myself easier and cheaper.

I have a 22 horsepower Kohler Courage engine will turn over but won't start. Spark plugs dry not getting gas check solenoid, solenoid works. Check to see if choke would open when throttle was put into choke. Cable was not engaging choke to open all the way. Adjusted cable linkage with one small adjustment screw by putting throttle lever to slow, loosen cable housing clamp (1 screw) located under carb, then move black throttle cable housing back about a quarter of an inch, or however much you need, retighten cable housing down with the screw. Now choke opens all the way when pushed into choke. It starts first turn every single time now.

Sears repairman came to diagnose my Kohler-engine Craftsman Garden Tractor today, said the problem is the fuel solenoid. Said he can't replace just the solenoid, has to replace the whole carb for $600. I ordered the carb from him, but after seeing this vid I'm going to check the solenoid myself in the morning and see what's what. If it needs replacing, Amazon has the part for $29, delivered in two days. Great vid, well-explained.

Since when does a carb for a mower, or anything else the average person has around their house cost 600 bucks ? Saying you can't replace a solenoid and charging 600 bucks for a new carb , even with installation ( two screws a couple small cables reattached and a fuel line, total of 15 to 20 minutes ) are both crimes and he should have been reported to the police. Also, Sears should have been notified and the better business bureau as well. I got a replacement carb on line, brand new OEM for 30 bucks with shipping. That repairman was a thief and 400 dollars of that was going straight into his pocket….thats if it even cost 200 for travel, the part and time.

Super presentation! In my case, I had a clogged hose (due to deterioration on the inside - bad gas - ethanol). It faked me out at first as gas pushed back after a air pressure test from the filter. However the telling sign was that gas wouldn't flow out with simple gravity test. I replaced all the lines and then had to bleed out a good part of the tank to rid the water accumulation.

I might have fixed my problem by just removing the spring lol… My problem with my mower is when it would get hot after about 15 minutes of heavy mowing I would loose power and RPMS… it would still be running “smooth” but definitely down on power and when I would turn off the deck I can’t turn the deck back on. Been chasing the problem all summer and it’s not anything obvious to me (I’m not down a cylinder). Well I just removed that spring and mowed for a solid 30 minutes through heavy grass and my mower didn’t bog down at all
@cjsawinski
@cjsawinski Год назад
Actually now that I think about it more I don’t think the solenoid was ever my problem… the fuel bowl was full when I removed it. But ya my mower losses rpm’s (likes being governed) about about 15 minutes of mowing when it gets hot. It’s not the fuel venting as I leave my gas cap loose, got new plugs and new air filter in it this spring, the fuel is also fresh, I have spark on both cylinders…. At this point I’m kinda suspecting coils and maybe they just are getting weak spark when they get hot? If it is coils that would suck because coil replacement for my Koehler 26hp is a $200 conversion kit because they discontinued the original coils. But ya outside of spending $200 on coils for a mower I’m kinda stumped

I have a command 23 that idles and runs poorly, I've narrowed it down to this part. At first I thought I had an electrical problem because when I disconnected the battery the idle smoothed out however, you couldn't throttle it up. Basiclly by disconnecting power I was disabling the fuel shut off valve.so my question is now why does it run poorly with the shut off valve working properly? I removed it and made sure it was operating properly. There wasn't a spec of rust, corrosion or bad fuel in it. Any ideas?

Does it have to be installed? I purchased a new carburetor and it has a bolt in the bottom of the bowl where the solenoid is supposed to go.
