This looks pretty convincing 😅👍 It’s just hard to believe people will actually pay that much for those jobs. Do you ever get someone that disagrees with your charges? I’m sure you give an estimate before you do the jobs don’t you? So if they accept the estimate, your in like Flynn. So being new to it, I would have a difficult time estimating my time for each different job. I’ll have to watch more of your videos, maybe eventually I’ll feel confident enough to start. Cause one thing I don’t want to do is start charging incorrectly, it would affect the outcome for future business. Charge too little and you become known as the cheap guy! Charge too much and I’d never get calls lol. I guess that’s what scares me the most. Difficult to find that happy medium on what to charge for each situation. Thanks for the response, I’m subscribed. Liked also. Thanks for the videos

I do Dryer Vents cleaning for a living looking to get into more handyman stuff like your videos but that’s not the way you clean the dryer vent those cheap brushes that you got from Home Depot or Lowe’s will snap off in there and you’re going to end up fishing one of those out of there not to mention there’s a good chance that there’s probably a screen or clog at the gooseneck on top of the roof that needs to be removed as well but all in all I appreciate your videos
@handymanjourney

Hey thanks Scott! I appreciate your comment! What brand dryer vent cleaner do you recommend?
@scottdodson7122
@scottdodson7122 2 года назад
@@handymanjourney hey boss there is a company out there that is called snaplock it’s made for dryer vent cleaning they’re not cheap but if you’re going to use a brush I would definitely recommend using one of those we don’t use a brush 99% of our jobs are done with high compressed air in a reverse whip line you basically climb up on the roof you run this line down through the gooseneck until it hits the back of the dryer and as you’re pulling it it has holes in the back of the nozzle and it reverses everything back up to you way better system you just need a compressor to do it and it Hass to be at least 150+ psi The only time we use brushes is if it’s raining or if the wall vent just goes directly out the wall but a lot of times the gooseneck will have a screen on it from the roofers that has to be removed and also sometimes by using a brush when you run that up there where it curves on that gooseneck it has a tendency to clog it up and not go out the top of the vent so just be careful

@@colinmoore68 kinda haha, Not really officially yet. I’ve done a few jobs for my returning customers from other jobs I’ve done. It’s all my customers fault lol, they keep asking me to do things. But really I’m trying to focus more on getting my wood shop finished at home. Gonna try and make wood stuff to sell. Maybe online or at my local flea markets. I drive Semi on the weekends and run my junk removal biz mon - fri. So I stay pretty busy usually. But if I can give my two cents…….I’d say go for it. Life is too short. Try it out. If that doesn’t work you’ll be like me, trying everything until you get what fits. Good luck.

Hi Lee! Nice to see you back out in the field. Really good information, as always. Do you ever quote a job and then need to adjust the price because it took longer? How do you price a job that you have never done before? Thanks!
@handymanjourney
@handymanjourney 2 года назад
Hey thanks for your comment and questions Tim! Yes that does happen occasionally, the best thing to do is be honest with the client, " this job took x amount of time longer than I originally planned." As for quoting jobs I have never done before. I walk through the job in my head to the best of my knowledge, watch RU-vid videos if needed and think how long that might take me and charge accordingly.

I have been doing handyman work for the last year and I recently had a falling out with one of the customers I worked for. I charged $50 to install a toilet seat. The secretary who received the bill was upset and continued to talk about how anyone with a screw driver could change a toilet seat. Long story short, $50-$5 for gas to pick up the seat and drive to install it =$45. Set some aside for taxes and it’s not even worth doing especially if you are going to end up in the situation I ended up in. People don’t know how to do something and don’t want to learn. They don’t want to buy the tools, watch a video on RU-vid or ask for directions… all that is perfectly fine with me. However if you don’t want to do anything, expect to pay for these services. If you find someone good don’t criticize their prices. The last thing you want to do as a homeowner is hire the cheapest person to mess something up and then call the professional back and pay even more than the original quote because the first person caused more damage than they fixed.

I'll never forget a story I heard back when I was doing window cleaning. Business was paying their guy $15/week to do their storefront and dumped him for someone that would do it for $10. A week later they called the original guy begging for him to help, the new guy had destroyed their UV coating with a razorblade. He said sure I can fix that. $1500. LOL How you feeling about saving that $5 now? :D

Great question! Be sure to check out some of our other WLOG videos, we talk a lot about pricing and how I come up with that. Everything is priced per job but really based on an unspoken hourly rate, so how long it takes to do the job. But typically on smaller jobs like this you can charge a good rate and get it done a lot quicker!

I enjoyed the video and the respect the process you go through... When it comes to a "punch list" do you start out with a base fee and then add increments, or do you offer a set fee for a set time? For instance, $350 for 3 hours of whatever... or does every service have a price?
@handymanjourney

Thank you, I appreciate you tuning in! We charge by the job so if someone gives us a punch list item we basically give them a price per project that they need done. But everything is based around an hourly rate that is unspoken

Would strongly advise not to use an impact on furniture assembly. Personally, I used a drill/driver with the clutch on the lowest setting and titrate as needed. Even my nice Milwaukee hammer drill’s lowest torque is far too much for fine screws

Milwaukees drills overall are pretty lack luster. I will say for the type of work you are doing you could absolutely get away with M-12 impact driver (gen 2 and 3 have multiple settings making it easier to dial in power) the M-12 gen3 hammer drill (still very small and compact) looks like it finally has some usable power but would be great for assembly. They also make an M-12 assembly tool with 4 or 5 different heads. Love it for cabinets.

Do you ever feel bad about charging high prices for easy work? For some customers I'm up front and tell them I charge $80 per hour and for furniture assembly you can probably get someone at $20 per hour to do it, and it'll be more cost effective What do you think? Like some jobs, especially the bigger ones, I charge a lot because it's hard work and a big project, but sometimes for stuff like painting and furniture assembly I kind of feel bad knowing they can prob get someone for 1/5 of the price and still do a decent job

I live in Southern California and a handyman if you can find one charges $190.00 the first hour stating from there place of business and $114.00 a hour after, with a two hour minimum. The overhead is expensive. In San Diego, California In and out burgers pays $21.00 a hour the benefits and free food.

Really at the end of the day it comes down to quality of work, they can definitely find someone cheaper to do the work, that is always an option but if they want the quality that I produce then they're going to need to pay a premium for that. I have an hourly rate that is much higher than others in my area but I have a reputation and quality and warranty that backs that up. So no I do not feel bad for charging what I charge because what I charge is what I need to charge in order to run my business and make a profit!
