Great video. I have the Oni and I agree it's fantastic. I recently used it with great results on the Rio Savegre in Costa Rica and now I'm looking at the Air Stage Fujiryu to complement it. To avoid redundancy I'll probably end up going with the 360 6:4 so I can use it on more open streams, or when I want to nymph beadheads.

Yes! The Fujiryu 360 6:4 is a great choice for that!

I appreciate the effort you put in to this specs and comparison video of the Japanese rods. I look forward to the videos you talked about doing in the coming months.

Excellent follow-up, Kris. Your videos helped me pull the trigger on purchasing the HM-39 from Chris. My first big-boy Tenkara rod was the Nissin ZeroSum 320 7:3. Wonderful rod and I had lots of great days on my Brookie streams, though after a while it felt like I was over-horsing these little gems to my net. I also found out that I enjoyed a longer rod, so I got the ZS 360 in both 6:4 and 7:3: the 6:4 great for unweighted kebari, the 7:3 better for ones with weight (Perdigons and such). 3 years into this obsession, rods with lower RFIs are my go-to: ASF 5:5, Daiwa Sagiri (thanks to Tenkara-ya) and my HM30R which treats every Brookie like a small-stream tarpon.

Thanks Mitch, sounds very similar to my evolution. Sometimes I make a game out of it and how small and light of a rod I can use for a given situation. Definitely makes the fights more exciting. Let me know what you think about that HM 39 R… They are fun rods!

I try to keep up with all your videos, and like them all. The rod comparisons are especially interesting. A suggestion is to compare all your Kurenai HM rods. I have the 3, 3.3, 3.9 and 45 but not the longer versions. It would be interesting to hear your experiences with each rod - casting, types of flies suited to each, and streams and fish sizes for each, etc. thanks for these wonderful videos.

Thanks Jerry. I will add that to my list of ideas. I do have a video using the 54 on an alpine lake for brookies, as well. It was a great time!

@@tenkaraonthetrail Forgot to mention - I met Luong Friday at the expo. Nice man, got to cast a few of his rods. Was very impressed with the Ninga. Waiting for the Pocket models to be available in black later this year.

I really want to get my hands on one of the Air Stage Fujiryu 5:5 models this year. I think it will be right up my alley. Would love an Oni rod someday but the price scares me away a bit. I have considered the Kurenai's in the past, but I am kind of afraid that I won't like the crazy tip flex aspect as most of the other rods I've really enjoyed (example: Daiwa Sagiri 39MC) are slowish, full flex rods. I've also previously owned a Nissin Pro Spec 320 6:4, which has a full flex profile but RFI of 3.0 at 320, which I found too light and too slow for my fishing (was "whippy" or "noodley" even with unweighted flies, let alone light nymphs). It seems like most people love the Kurenai series, while a few don't connect with it. Any thoughts come to mind on that (other than buy one and see for yourself haha)?

It sounds like the NAS 5:5 (or the Oni) would be right in your wheelhouse. I haven’t checked the Oni prices lately…I think I paid about 280ish which is a bit more than the Fujiryu for sure. All wonderful rods though. I agree with your thoughts on the kurenai….cult following but some folks just don’t like that tip flex. I definitely have to change my mindset (and casting stroke) when I fish with them. RFI of 3 is definitely sloooooow. Some folks have the same thoughts on the foxfire at it’s longest length. The 6:4 flex zerosum rods may be a good option for you too…I’ve heard wonderful things about the 320 (to save a few bucks you could also go with the royal stage version)….great rods.

I have a question about Dragontail Rods that you have mentioned in other videos. If I need a rod that is good for bow and arrow casts, is a 7:3 rod better than a 6:4? Hellbender vs Hydra. Thanks.
@tenkaraonthetrail
@tenkaraonthetrail Год назад
Most rods can do a bow and arrow cast to some degree but the more tip flex ones seem to work better so that would be the 7:3 more so than 6:4 IMO.

Thanks for responding so promptly. Some places I have to fish from the bank and there is no room for a backcast.
