Today we're looking at Disney Channel's Smart House (1999) which, as it turns out, inspired a lot of my initial interest and fascination with movie making. But, Smart House, I still have some questions for you. Will this DCOM starring Ryan Merryman and Katey Sagal still hold up under my scrutiny? I never realized how sexist this movie is and how it's mostly saying the only reason to want a mom is to have someone at home to take care of everything. Still it holds up in a lot of other places

I think it's actually proposing the exact opposite message - that not all families look the same, and they can change & grow. The cast is just grappling with that in very different ways. Angie doesn't remember her mother and has resultingly nuanced, apparently lessened grief; Ben doesn't want anyone to replace her and wants that hole in his life to stay, as a twisted loyalty to his mother; Nick is trying to move on while being a single parent; and Sara is a very independent female figure whose purpose isn't -just- to date Nick (already a step up in female character depth for the time). Sara also never once tries to take over "motherly" roles. When she's seen cooking, it's WITH Nick & Nick makes breakfast at the end, as well. The most sexist mom tropes are taught to Pat through old television shit that the child, Ben, forces her to watch to "train" her. It's a warped, desperate solution a grieving kid comes up with so he can hold onto the memory of his mother, and not betray the framework of family he believes he still has to be loyal to. There's definitely sexist dialogue, tropes reflective of the time, but there are also moments where the absurdity of even older ideas are challenged, like when Nick calls out Pat's new programming to be reminiscent of the 50s. Nick also starts taking over more of the work that was off-loaded onto Ben, by the end of the movie. Growth. Should he have been doing that much earlier? Yes. Definitely. However, I don't think characters saying sexist things and growing through the movie makes the movie, as a whole, a "sexist movie"...or even a "sexist passion play" as another person wrote. The point of the movie is not -you need a mom to "have someone at home to take care of everything", but rather how you deal with the loss of a parent, the resulting hole that forms, & how people can grow to fill in the gaps.

@@Defebwar to add on to that...how we often use technology to fill those emotional gaps because it's easier than facing that grief/trauma...Although I doubt that this children's movie was going for that...However, I can see the "sexist" stuff in not knowing how to do the girl's hair and Ben taking on a lot of the parenting things, but that could be more of having to "grow up" quickly after trauma and trying to control everything so his life isn't disrupted again...This is getting way too deep...Geez...

orange julius smoothie recipe: INGREDIENTS 1 cup milk (whole, 2%, or skim) 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 6-ounce can frozen orange juice concentrate 1/2 cup sugar (or sugar substitutes, check package for equivalence) 1 1/2 cups ice INSTRUCTIONS Blend the milk and vanilla: Pour the milk and vanilla in a blender and pulse until combined. Add the frozen concentrate: Add the frozen orange juice concentrate. Blend until fully combined with the milk. Add the sugar and ice cubes: Blend until cubes are crushed and mixture has thickened. If things end up a little thick, just add a tablespoon of water and mix once again.

There is another comment explaining how that isn’t the completely case, (still having sexist themes of course) but how the movie is mostly about the kid and dealing with the loss of a parent and a character actually saying Pat’s programming was very 50s. Idk about all of it, but it was a a very interesting comment in a thread a bit higher up.

My dad loves technology so hes automized the house; lights turn on and off when we enter or leave a room, we can start the dishwasher and washer and dryer with a voice command, the garage door automatically opens when we pull up, we can lock doors from our phones, yadda yadda yadda... All of it is super cool until the system he uses crashes and then the garage door opens and closes by itself and the lights turn on and off at random... absolutely terrifying 😂
