This song will forever remind me of the summer of 99. I'd just graduated high school and this song and "Smooth" by Santana and Rob Thomas were all over the radio! Good times 🤘
It's had so many lives. The song was huge on it's own in '99. But then Shrek and Rat Race gave it a new life. And it had yet another resurgence as a meme song. It was the second major mainstream song to become a huge meme after the Rickroll. Which is very hard to do, because the song is already so well known. All Star is just a great timeless song, that has stood the test of time. Everybody likes it. White people like it. Black people like it. Men, women, gay, straight.
It's a song that resonates that so many people. Who doesn't want to be told that they're an all star? We're always constantly being told how horrible, and useless we are. Or how much better these celebrities are than us. Bragging about all the cars, money, and females that they have, and we dont. It's nice to have a fun catchy pick-me-up song we can all sing along to, that isn't just inflating the artist's own egos.

Arguably the most iconic rock song of our time. RIP to Steve Harvey (and Jimmy Buffett who we also lost this month). I am sure the two of these legends are rocking out together.
Eg, I'd go with a bunch of other songs that defined the 90s before this song. Nuthin but a G thang, Smells like Teen Spirit, Juicy, California Love, Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life, Beck - Loser, Gin and Juice, Zombie, Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Warren G - Regulate... just to name a few off the top of my head.. But All Star I do remember getting a lot of air time in like 1999 - 2001
I think we hold things from our childhood so close to the vest because it was a time when we can remember the purer things in life. and this band/songs were a big part of that. R.I.P, All Star.
This another one of those bands that was hugely popular despite so many not liking them. It's like people don't want to admit they have Smash Mouth or Hootie and the Blowfish or Nickleback in their collection. Just enjoy the music and have fun for f**k sake.

My dad passed away about a month shy of his 53rd birthday due to liver failure caused by severe cirrhosis which is very similar to what caused this amazingly talented singer’s death. Rest in Peace, Steve. You truly were an all star and a rock star.

This song and also "I'm a Believer" just resonated with the fans from the 90s and 2000s, and when it's part of the Shrek soundtracks, Steve Harwell has made his legacy with the kids who grew up watching Shrek, and I enjoyed it too - one of the greatest and fun CG-animated movies I have ever seen. I was in high school at that time, but knew a neighbor's kids of 4 to 9 who loved this song, and having it played in their backyard. Rest in peace, Steve. You are an All Star forever.
It's sad to hear what happened to Steve Harwell, he and Smashmouth were a big part of the soundtrack of my childhood. My thoughts are with Steve's family and I wish them comfort in this difficult time.

I was sad that I never saw smashmouth live, then I watched a bunch of his rough videos from the last 10 years, then i watched the new guy singing, then i watched this video. And I realize I could have never seen smashmouth in their prime because I was 6. RIP thank you
Funny I didn't know who Smashed Mouth was so when the lead singer Steve Larwell died I came to RU-vid. I just picked this song from other just to listen to. The funny thing was when I taught pre-k I had this little boy who sang this song all the time. I don't remember the child's name but I can see him singing this song and dancing. Such a sweet memory.
Seen so many people leave us after they tell them they have end stage liver disease and need to quit drinking. Only know one other person besides myself that did quit drinking, he lived for quite a few years before picking up again and leaving us shortly later.
My father passed away due to drinking related issues last year, 56 years old just like Steve. Heartbreaking that we don't have the proper support structures in place to seriously tackle addictions like that.

Makes me tear up seeing Steve at his best. I know the best, younger years of my life were back in high school. I was blasting Smash Mouth cruising with my hair flying in the wind while jamming out with my dudes! Listening to these guys play brings back the best of the best. I really wasn't into the pop rock back in those days but these guys were catchy great song can't help but tap your foot to it when you hear it it's all around feel good song you left your mark on the world brother he'll play this song for a hundred years
I wonder why they haven't released this clip earlier. It still would have been great to watch it without such a sad occasion... It is a sweet gesture from the Letterman team, don't get me wrong, but please release more cool stuff like this without waiting for a specific reason, if you can!

Wow watching this just brought a flashback to 5th grade! My mom picked up the cutest/coolest girl in our class to take to school. It never happened before or since lol. But I guess they had car trouble and asked my mom to give her a ride that week. I was nervous cuz of course why wouldn't I be? This song came on the radio and my mom put an "L" on that girl or my forehead (can't remember) as she was singing along when that part of the song came on. My face was probably beet red but it was a fun memory, RIP Steve.
