Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fantastic game and a fitting celebration of the Smash series and video games as a whole. However, it’s missing one specific thing, and without that thing, Smash Ultimate feels somewhat incomplete. Let’s discuss.

I'm glad you brought up the fact that writing accurate descriptions of over 1000 spirits would be a huge undertaking. A lot of people who think that spirits should have descriptions like trophies did don't seem to consider the fact that descriptions may be what prevented trophies from coming back. One thing you didn't mention though is that Smash Ultimate supports 11 languages. Translating all of the game's text was probably hard enough as is, so just Imagine how much harder it would've been if there were spirit descriptions.

I really wish that the team realized the obvious solution tot he trophy issue. Only make trophies of charcters and objects that already have models in the game. With the amount of summons, items, and cameos I imagine you’d have at least as many trophies as brawl did

I just wish spirits had descriptions like the trophies did. I loved reading those descriptions and they absolutely could’ve kept them with spirits. Edit: I made this comment before you said the same thing in your video. Glad you agree!

Sir you are CORRECT, there was one time myself and a friend bought a DS game called “Make 10: A journey of numbers” because we somehow remembered it had a Spirit in Ultimate, and we had a good laugh playing it, but it would’ve been SO much better to then check Smash Ultimate and see what the game itself had to say about, Make 10, or whatever

A part of me finds the argument of Spirits replacing Trophies or anything else Trophies had that Spirits don't uncompelling. While I can buy that overall Spirits cut down on some development time I have a hard time believing that it was really substantial enough to justify the removal of Trophies. I feel like if they reused models from the Characters, items, background stage characters/elements, Pokémon, Assist trophies, and bosses, they could have easily gotten to about 400-500 trophies right there. In addition Ultimate launched with about 1000 spirits, between both versions of Smash 4, they made about 1000 Trophy descriptions, I find it hard to believe they couldn't do it again, especially in the years they had after launch. It also seems like a weird argument since I imagine designing about 1500 spirit battles would be just as hard as making/polishing up about 300 or so models, but that is pure conjecture. Either way I hope Trophies or at least all the extra stuff that Trophies had (Descriptions, Games/Consoles of Origin, Origin Year, Display Boxes, etc) come back in the next Smash game.

Also it doubly sucked for me cause as a huge Kingdom Hearts and Castlevania fan, I hate that Ultimate skimped out on putting effort into respecting the history of those franchises.

Honestly. This is all i wish they did. One last update to the game, giving it balances, 4 new stages to make the stage select full, and spirit descriptions.

Yep, it's the issue of quantity over quality. The more content you have, the less curated it is. Remember the unique opening movies in 64 and Melee? The newer ones are just random clips from elsewhere edited together. They cram so much into the game, they forget to add soul.

Looking back now, the lack of spirit descriptions hurts so much more since Ultimate is without question the most “celebration of ALL video games” the series has achieved. And there’s not really a way to comprehend that? Everyone talks about how it’s the biggest gaming crossover, but from my point of view that title is being carried solely by word. Yes there are all these franchises in the game, you can see all these different names listed all over, but that’s about as far as it goes. There’s no quick way to understand the sheer diversity of genres, themes, and stories other than just looking at a character or stage at face value. There’s the tips, but they don’t stay on screen for long, the proper list of them is in the very back of the main menu, and is limited to fighters, stages and items. As the years pass since Ultimate’s release I find it harder to feel the scope of the game, and I hate that feeling. It could just be me naturally drifting heavily from the gameplay, but that absence of descriptions is certainly not helping

There are also very few interactions between the characters, and of the few that do exist the vast majority are intra-franchise anyway (Star Fox smash taunts, codec calls, Palutena's Guidance, certain win quotes). The only times characters from different series actually talk to or acknowledge each other are World of Light's opening scene (which is generic dialogue), Falco's codec call, and Richter's Guidance (I'm not counting reveal trailers since they're not actually in the game). Compare this to the funny intro animations in the SNK vs. Capcom series or the dialogue in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and the "crossover" aspect of the crossover game is actually really underwhelming. Especially when you consider that the premise of the game is of a child playing with their toys, and character interactions is a fundamental part of make-believe.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Yeah I can look it up, but when I'm lying in bed or whatever and playing the game, do I want to stop and google who everyone is? Instead of making me excited to open up the gallery and discover something new, it just makes me not care that I got it. What was something fun is now "someone else remembers that exists, neat" at best.

YES, exactly!!! This is my biggest personal issue with the game too!! I replayed World of Light recently and while spirit collecting/battles do genuinely really appeal to me and I don't mind them swapping models for pngs to save resources and time, I found my heart aching for any sort of written descriptions at all, especially when it comes to characters who are more niche or new and may not have existing official bios elsewhere. Having a unique and creative but official description that's there in game to pore over hits so, so different to getting vaguely attached to an unfamiliar spirit I use enough to give them a wee google and find out what their deal is through a fan wiki that's dense and methodical and/or forced to keep its wording exactly in line with existing sources. Give me an in-game encyclopedia to flip through, damnit!

Smash Ultimate's got a weird place in my heart for Fighting games. It's easily the most diverse and packed Smash title of them all, with tons of features and general UI elements I don't think any of us could ever go back from. But at the same time there's just this _thing_ that's missing from it that makes the overall experience feel less profound as the other installments. The general pace of the game is great, a much faster and more engaging speed than the slow drag that was Sm4sh and especially Brawl, and stuff like dash canceling and directional air dodges give players more options from their movement. But at the same time the removal of techs from pivot grabbing to wavedashing and ledge cancelling from Sm4sh and Melee make doing stuff like landing on a ledge or spacing have that tinge of sticky movement, which only gets worse when you take in the innate input lag delay _and_ the insane buffer system. Taking all of that into account with the cast of characters where a lot of them are disappointing because they're either slight variations of another character (or just straight up copy and pasted 1 to 1), aren't accurate to their source material at all, or straight up suck (Ganondorf is all 3 of them) and more than enough of the cast feels half-baked, which leads into the issue with the new/old but still relevant ones that are annoying to fight against because of their archetypes (Zooners like Samus, Rob, Isabel), flawed design in both scope and playstyle (Sonic, Kazuya), wifi mashers (Ness, _especially_ Ness) or are just all these things cuz thet are bloody broken (Steve, debatably Aegis) and this big, glorious crossover platform fighter kinda becomes just a boring sludge fest some days to play. But then again, going back to last installments I feel completely taken aback but just how little characters they are. You truly don't appreciate what you have until it's gone, and im scared the next game is going to take like maybe up to half of Ultimate's rooster away even if it is the right decision to make each individual fighter more unique. But what I know for sure, is that the game right now with characters like Steve, Aegis, Min Min, etc arent designed well, and are _definitely_ a problem. The other non competitive issue I have with Ultimate as well is that the majority of the other modes apart from the main local battles kinda suck. World of Light is too gimicky, relying on too much 'oh this fight is like this other one except these things are different/added.' It's boss fights are fun, but it lacks a good sense of scale and difficulty ladder which makes single player games fun cuz each fight is almost completely depended on what spirit you're facing, and the spirit you've equipped to deal with it. The story also lacking that tight cohesive structure that Subspace had (and just good singleplayer games are accustomed to) makes it hard to really care about progressing through the game mode no matter how many references and set pieces they build, in which on that note, having it not be trophies anymore really sucks cuz in the past, each of them used to be full 3d models that had a brief but valuable description of either its origin or place in that games storyline which both informed the player of it, and served as good callbacks to potentially important to just cool parts of gaming history. Now all we get is a literal jpeg that I know I've seen on Google before with nothing but that name attached to it. And I guess that's my main problem with Ultimate, it's got a lot of things, but each of them lack that quality or depth in them to really cement in the belief that this is a huge _celebration_ of gaming history rather than just a husky museum where you'll go to it, take a glance around, and head out.

This was actually my biggest issue with losing Trophies in Ultimate. I did miss the 3D models, sure, but not nearly as much as the bios. I could have lived with the 2D images and sprites if the bios made a return, but they sadly didn't.

The descriptions don't even need to be as long as they were in other games. Spirits could've had a sentence or two about the Spirit in question and call it a day, it's not like people were asking for an essay on the Mario Mushroom or the guy from forgotten Nintendo franchise #23.

Before even watching the vid I just have to say: don’t say that about your World Of Light video: it’s one of my favourite vids on YT, I left a comment saying how great it was on it recently, and I think you were right about everything in it. (I mean, it’s why I’m here watching this one anyway 😂)

I almost bought a Switch just to play the new Smash, cuz I have yet to find an experience like Smash, not that I'm actually good at fighting games, its just the concept beats any rivalry I ever saw, but on the other it would be an overkill to buy a console for just one game, that I can play on PC, also I demand more reviews on SMT BS multiverse

True, I understand why trophies were cut because those took forever to create. But descriptions for each spirit doesn't sound as hard. They were able to do it for like 700 trophies in smash 4, I don't see how 1,000 spirits would be any different outside of doing a lot more of them.

They'd have to not only write a relatively lengthy description for 1530 spirits, but then they'd have to translate it almost a dozen times just to make it available for all regions Ultimate's released in. This is all assuming that copyright isn't an issue either

Idk the dev teams keep getting bigger and bigger with every game and Nintendo is wealthier in the Switch era than practicely ever before. They could have absolutely made it work if they cared.

@@jonathanwilliams1271 That's possibly millions of dollars for a feature most players aren't going to use extensively. Financially speaking, that is not worth the investment

I like Smash 4. More than the average player. But, that doesn't mean I hate Ultimate. It's my second favorite Smash game. Truth be told, I don't find any Super Smash Bros. game to be "bad"; all of them are great! Going back to Ultimate, I do find it to feel incomplete with the lack of descriptions for Spirits. If pressed, I'd choose trophies over spirits simply because of their well-written blurbs and nice presentation. Again, I like Ultimate just fine. The roster is unmatched, the soundtrack is amazing, there's a nice balance of color and detail in the aesthetic, and the stages are fabulous. Oftentimes, I like to set aside a couple of weeks just to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; it is my 30th favorite game. Good video.
