It seems like these islands inspire both scientific thought (Darwin) and artistic expression (this piece)! It was an interesting experience for me to go through this piece for the first time and begin to find it’s “sense”.
Here’s the link to the original song by Smashing Pumpkins:

I enjoyed your reaction, particularly the demonstration of the chord construction on your harp. The intro really works well on the harp. I also always love when you notice the bass. You are really starting to get the lingo down in speaking about the bass as a "fat" sounding, although maybe this isn't new and you use similar terminology in classical. I really like the Smashing Pumpkins and think they are a great 90s band, so my only issue is that you have now heard two of their songs, but have yet to hear one of their popular songs that they are known for (they have quite a few). For your next one I would select something that can at least be found on their greatest hits (Rotten Apples), rather than doing just their deeper cuts.

"Galapagos" has always felt like an underrated gem to me. It's a very pleasant song that works well in the context of the Mellon Collie album as a whole. Regarding Billy Corgan's voice: it can be a bit of an acquired taste. It's quite nasal. But I also can't imagine anyone else singing these songs. If you revisit Smashing Pumpkins in the future, I might check out one of their bigger hits-- "Today or "Tonight, Tonight" would both be good choices, I think.

I can’t believe you did this song. Such a hidden smashing pumpkins gem. Not many people even know this song exists. And it’s from my favourite band of all time. Guess that’s why it came up in my recommendations! I watched to the end and realised you didn’t like it. That’s a shame but this is not one of their big hits / songs though. It’s a very minor low key song from deep in their catalogue. It was never meant to be a standout song. This is a deep cut that many (even fans) have never heard. Personally I think it’s one of the most beautiful and heart wrenching songs I’ve ever heard.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It's very much in the theme of the album and it's not meant to be this complex stand alone song (there's plenty of that in other songs). But this section of the album from Cupid de Locke, Galapogos, Muzzle, Porcelina is probably my favorite section of the double album. Muzzle in particular is really nice following up that song, but that whole section has a bit of a tie in together when she was wondering about the ocean theme of the two songs she checked out. While I also really like the song, it's a unique song for someone/s to have put on her radar.

Those two along with Soma tend to be my standouts on that album as well. I just recently watched the tV Series Beef and they used Mayonaise to close out the series and it was really nice. Yellowjackets also recently used a couple of Pumkins songs, but they were horribly placed. Then i remember the Shield used Disarm for what went down with Lem and it was a nice song choice.

This song is absolutely incredible. You can hear the pain and anguish in Billy's voice as he sings it. The song actually makes me cry at times because it is so beautiful and I can feel his pain. Billie's voice is not for everybody, but it is very distinct and very unique. It might not be powerful in this song, but give half of his other songs a listen and he will realize quickly how amazing his voice is.
@Vraxx7
@Vraxx7 Месяц назад
I remember the first time I heard him sing ,”I won’t deny the pain. I won’t deny the change.” It just kinda hit me and made me tear up a bit. The power of this song is its raw honesty and anguish. I’m a big fan of Billy’s voice but, I understand that it’s not, one everyone will love. I tend to like singers with interesting and honest voices as opposed to “technically great or just pretty voiced singers.”

Porcelina and Galapagos ... what an ecclectic choice of songs (I like it). Corgan's voice gives the band this idiosyncracy, and the band comes from a scene in which individualism meant authenticity and trumped a lot of aesthetic qualities. Alternative Rock in the 90s is an outsider culture. Come as you are, as Nirvana sang. If you want to listen to the songs that made the band famous, you probably want "Today", "Disarm", or "Bullet with Butterfly Wings". "1979" was another big hit.

As a die hard Pumpkins fan (especially the golden era) it pains me deeply that you just can't seem to like his voice. You mentioned that several times in porcelina as well. I get that it's not a perfect voice, but it's very unique and I like listening to it a lot.

Billy mentions that he intentionally sings a bit higher and a bit out of tune for Smashing pumpkins. he used to sing in a Choir he lnows how to sing in tune but I guess it was a stylistic choice as a lot of grunge bands used to be a bit intentionally dissonant.

As someone who loves SP I'm not a big fan of how he sings a lot of their songs either. It always sounds a bit strained and not particularly melodic. But then the singing has never been the factor for my like of them. The lyrics and themes, the layered music, the drumming. Not his voice (usually).

When the Pumpkins first came out, I didn’t like Billy’s voice. Then, maybe a year later I heard a song & I just ‘got it.’ It clicked with me & I became a huge SP fan. His voice is that of the angsty teen that still resides in all of us, no matter how old. It’s a howl to the uncaring masses, that so badly wants to be heard & recognized.

He sing in a way that works with the music he writes. It’s not even necessarily his “real voice”. In a sense, and especially on this album, he’s playing a character. And singing in the voice of that character. I didn’t like his voice the first time j I heard it when I was 13 years old. A year and a half later Siamese Dream was my favorite album and it’s to this day. It grew on me.

I love Billy’s voice if for no other reason than it belongs in another universe called the 90s which was the decade of creativity and angst but at the same time relief from the plastic elements of the 80s. Billy was not perfect but he definitely was also not Motley Crue, Bon Jovi (sorry), Metallica, who was still the same angry band but with shorter hair and eyeliner. The pumpkins were the backlash, the imperfect voice that articulated a long overdue middle finger to what was left of hair bands.

Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness is essentially this band's "The Wall". It's more of a loose narrative in comparison, but it follows a character like Pink through an emotional journey. This is a double album aswell and conceptually is structured around times of the day from dusk to dawn. Like The Wall it's very experimental and dynamic. I'd be elated if you were able to do the same treatment with this album as The Wall
@Bowseefuss101
@Bowseefuss101 10 месяцев назад
Also by dynamic I mean imagine the hardest rock you've heard and then imagine your forté, the harp. This album has both ends of the spectrum sonically. And when I mentioned the harp, I did so because there is actually a harp on this album lol. Plus other "non-rock" instruments like orchestral strings and piano

This is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song. It isn't pleasant to listen to... but that is the point I think. The anguish of his experiences. It wasn't a radio song. This is a deep, personal cut on a very personal double album. Also that crash in the center was very unique fir the time. Its also a precursor to the modern pop/electronics drop.

Really enjoying your reactions and analyses Amy! "Tonight, Tonight" could be a shorter, poppier Pumpkins song to try from this album - it's one of its singles and a great tune, with an excellent video too (Pumpkins songs are known for having good videos, but this one is really special). Or another good long one from the record that I particularly like: "Thru the Eyes of Ruby". I think Billy's voice can be an acquired taste; for me I've always liked both the softness and harshness of it, its varying emotional intensities (it's more powerful in other songs), and it being a counterpoint to the music. You're right that the voice is deep down in the mix and instrumentation - I've heard this said before with this band, to the point that it's hard to hear the words sometimes; though that's something I've always liked about their sound (maybe this is part of the shoe-gaze style? I'm not sure), and even something I tried to emulate in early recordings of my own work when I was younger (I'm no longer a recording musician, as my interests led me to a writing career in video games, but I still play my guitar to relax). Another favourite song of theirs while I'm here (it's hard to stop thinking of ideas I'd love to see you cover!) is "Stand Inside Your Love" from their later album Machina - my wife and I chose this as our first-dance song at our wedding! It's interesting that these two Pumpkins songs you've covered so far haven't quite resonated with you, compared to the more pop-like singles of the other artists you mentioned. I think I expected the length, quiet-loud dynamics, and tonal qualities (thank you for this term!) of these Pumpkins songs to appeal more to classical sensibilities perhaps, especially with the almost harp-like guitar parts - though I know very little about classical music, other than some iconic pieces I enjoy. It seems you are appreciating the strong voices and bold compositions of the other songs, and so these must be valuable traits in classical music too - which would make sense, given the iconic pieces that spring to my mind at least. Okay last two song ideas for you, both long, and both by Meatloaf: "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", and "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are".

Smashing Pumpkins mellower songs (like much of the Mellon Collie album) did real well for them and there is definitely a vibe there. But for me its the harder, heavier songs that made me love the band. Songs like Cherub Rock, Geek USA or Silverf*ck. For their mellow songs, the ones with heavier undertones like Mayonaise and Soma are better as well. For that matter, The entire Siamese Dream album (Mellon Collie was my least favorite of their early albums ... Cyr is my least favorite overall, but it was kind of an experiment in synth-pop).

They utilize harmonies, classical instrumentation, and changes in time signature/tempo masterfully and are one of the most acclaimed bands from the 1960s. Interesting songs to review would be "God Only Knows," "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times," "Wouldn't it Be Nice," "Sloop John B," "Heroes and Villians," and their masterpiece, "Good Vibrations." Not exactly an Orbison or a Jim Morrison - even a Van Morrison voice. How about having a look at Fleetwood Mac's two incarnations - the Peter Green era and compare with the Buckingham Nicks era? A range of interesting voices all in one band. You haven't done Leonard Cohen yet: a poet of rock. Females with great voices: Sandy Denny, Karen Carpenter, Aretha Franklin, Bjork, Annie Lennox, Agnetha Faltskog, Susanne Sundfor - all very different but exceptional.

Corgan's voice have always been something controversial, and even a No-go for some people. It's nasal, very flat on some voyels, no vibrato. I like it because he knows what he can do and uses it very wisely. I also like the way his voice sounds like cat's howl in the night when he screams, and the transitions between his low voice and strong one. As a sound mixer, I would say that his will to nestle his voice into the instruments from whispers to screams obliges him to compress its sound a lot, and sadly some dynamics disappear in the process. That's a price to pay. Anyway, this album is incredible, and I'm very touched by your lecture of it. Pardon my poor English, I'm French.

There is something you are still not getting in my opinion. Rock is not only the music, the notes, the armonies, the arrengements, the progressions, the instruments... As important as the music is the attitude. Rock is attitude. It is not easy to explain. You cannot write the attitude in a score. I want you to listen to Pearl Jam. My song choice is "Black", live unplugged performance in the MTV. I am sure many times people asked for it. I want to see how you react, if you are able to listen and analyze the music as you usually do in your first reaction or if the performance, the energy and emotion of the singer captivates you so much that you are overwhelmed and cannot listen as you usually do (notes, armonies, lines...). I am really curious about your reaction. Later, before your deepest analisis, listen the original album song. Listen as well a live performance of this song in, for example, the Pinkpop 92 fest. Then you will listen very intense guitars weeping together with the singer performance. You will realize than the same song of rock music can be performed so different by the same band. It is much flexible than classical music. I am enjoying very much your project. You are genuine. Thank you.😮

I really didn't like the choice of song, consider Amy had already done Porcelina... the songs are not equal, but they have too many similarities anyway. I think weirder songs like Rocket or Geek USA would be best, not only heavy but full of guitars it takes a while to understand. I'd say that Mellon Collie is a simplified version of the Pumpkins, as we'd expect of any work by Flood... I like the record but they can do much more. Not that Amy would like these stranger songs, maybe, but it may be just a matter that she doesn't like the Pumpkins proposal, period. But I would love to see her analysing a different face of the band.

The Pumpkins come out of a strand rock that interweaves with grunge, punk, and post punk (techno). You can trace those strands back to some excellent 1960s artists - Neil Young is one. One of the distinctive characteristics of this side of rock is a movement away from the blues. There are a few notable names along the way. They include Patti Smith (Gloria, Horses, and Free Money), The Sex Pistols (God Save the Queen, and Anarchy in the UK), and The Cure, among others. The Cure is helpful because you can compare their more raw, but good, early songs, such as A Forrest, to the more developed techno lushness of their 1989 album Distintegration.. The point of all this is the Pumpkins began as a late 1980s post punk techno band, and techno had its roots in the punk movement. So as the Pumpkins developed, they began to move towards the grunge sound of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but always retained strong traces of punk and hints of the lush sounds of the late 1980s Cure. All this can be traced back to a move away from the blues by some rock musicians in the 1960s. Thats what makes punk and its descendents, such as the Pumpkins, so different from the more blues influenced hard rock and heavy metal bands of the 1970s and 80s. And that gives you a point of comparison to bands such as Metallica or Bon Jovi.

20-40(who knows with how long people are living now...)Years from now when you're retired and living like a teenager again(allowed to throw caution to the wind)split an eighth of mushrooms or whatever hallucinogen of your choice, then listen to this "double cd" beginning to end...then...maybe you'll get why people are ga-ga for this band... Side note...I'd love to see you tackle "entire albums" more often like you did with "The Wall" and I believe a few others...I think many of these bands are "suffering" from hearing the song out of context from the rest of the album...music used to be an experience, now it's something to consume while doing errands...so sad...

Progressive rock and rock in general has a particular feeling beyond harmony. Billy Corgan has not a great voice but it was made for the S.P. type of music. It’s like Bob Dylan, unique and authentic.

I always felt that Billy’s voice was that of a child, lost amongst the waves of sound. Or at least, that’s when it works best for me. If you listen to Mayonnaise you will hear it. I think that’s why these albums are mixed that way. The voice is not a singular hook. The music as a whole is supposed to draw you in, as with a concerto or symphony

Starting with Porcelina was unusual but tasteful. Following with Galapagos is waaay off the beaten path. Your analysis of the voice is accurate with this song, though he intentionally sings sharp to create moments of dissonance in an otherwise atmospheric space. As others have suggested, I would recommend something better known. This is a nice song but not emblematic. The pumpkins are famous for a myriad of styles.

I like Smashing Pumpkins. Very distinct sound. I remember when I first heard :"Rat in a Cage"...thought it was a new Rolling Stones song, lol... Billy has one of the more distinct voices in modern music. Would love to see Amy's reaction to Cake. Clever and talented musicians there.

Billy Corgan doesn't have the best of voices but it is what it needs to be for the music and I couldn't imagine it any other way, but yeah, she's correct... it's pretty rough. At the same time i don't think it hurts the music. He's the one writing all of the music, instrumentally and lyrically (except for the drums), so it all works together... it couldn't be any other way. Overall they/he put out some awesome music.

I don't have a Smashing Pumpkins album, they came up at a time when I was busy with work, family, babies, keeping a suburbia house and the wife's minivan all sorted. The voice is very nasal-y, almost overdone so or on purpose. I don't know how it would be listening to an entire album. And also how the band would mix up different songs to keep it interesting. Amy, these music acts also played to certain cultures of youth. You mentioned Bon Jovi and the type of person who would listen to Bon Jovi is a different person than the one who listens to The Smashing Pumpkins, generally. I see this music as going the direction of, touching on the "goth" crowd. You know, the kids with all black cloths, black hair, black nails and make-up and being all sullen sitting quietly folded up in a corner is their idea of having fun. But there are small details in the music that stir and act towards a certain culture group in youth. As such, I believe that the choices he makes vocally are, in part, stylistic, artistic choices that help develop the band's overall vibe. Thank you for the video.

The people gave you two super deep cut Smashing Pumpkins songs, lol. There are way more immediate, and in my mind, better, Pumpkins songs. You really nailed it on the voice mix being even to the music in this album. This album was recorded much more raw than their breakout album, Siamese Dream, before it. His voice is much less curated and effected on this album to show it's raw qualities. Siamese dream was much smoother and consistent, but still not too up front.

This is a good song but is not the best representation of their sound. They experimented with lots of different sounds on this Album. They have Alternative rock, heavy rock, Metal, Classical and even pop sounding songs on this album. One of the most diverse sounding albums I have ever listened to. It is quite an achievement. It is a double album. Songs you need to listen to, to get more of an idea of their sound is Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, 1979 and Tonight Tonight. These are some of their biggest hits.

Billy's voice was never intended to be an operatic one of perfection. Every word and note sung are meant to paint the intended picture of the song. To intend the vocal to be a beautiful table centerpiece would be rather insulting to the song itself. To look at the songs as an entity within themselves shifts the viewpoint tremendously.

Gotta disagree on the expressiveness of his voice. He has a far greater range of textures and timbres compared to the stereotypical archetype of what is considered a great singer.

i always felt his voice got a bit snarly, like he was restraining anger while trying to sing out of his range, a lot like neil young, even neil jokes 'i sometimes hit the right note', when he's been hammered into his range, he's a pretty good singer. neil's songs are often done better by other artists, have made some of them more famous than they otherwise would have been, i think billy could have wider appeal if there were a cover band that did the singing better.

Normally rock music is pretty universal, but I think grunge (and all the music that we associate with that period of time, even if they didn't necessarily identify with grunge) is SO American that there is a divide that is rarely found with the majority of styles that you find in rock music. Yeah Nirvana was an incredible international success, and loved everywhere, but personally, as a non-American, I found it impossible to appreciate the "grunge sound "(way of singing, attitude, guitar style) beyond a few of the most iconic songs. I don't see the point. For me it's the sound of boredom, I don't feel anything.

Very good band all together. We need to be a bit honest here by acknowledging rather poor vocal abilities of - otherwise talented - Billy Corgan. Perhaps it fits the SP music (very arguably, I think) but I would occasionally welcome some criticism here, unless it is not a part of the channel somewhat, which would be regrettable, I think.

So many of us feel the pain when the paying request ers win out the day. Most of the reaction channels aren't upfront that those are first and sometimes only songs we will hear. Either the big songs for clicks and traffic or playing the Patron requests seem to be part of the formula on most if not all channels. There are occasions when a channel is starting out and will play the better options and requests from fans. But as soon as the channel gets success those days are over. Only paying customers get attention. I would love for a content creator to be more upfront and real on the process. I would respect them so much more if they told their fans that. Or rotate from paying to no paying every other request. That's truly fair. But I'm not going to blame them for making money for their content on their channel. It is what it is! Lol.

Amy, I hope you'll move on to doing Smashing Pumpkins' harder rock songs instead of just only focusing on their ballads. "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" "Zero" "Ava Adore" "The End Is The Beginning Is The End"* "The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning"* * They are two completely different versions of the same song. There are another 2; an instrumental "The Guns Of Disastrous" and the other more electronica "The Ethers Tragic".

I was 17-18 when this album was released. I liked rock music and played guitar. I liked Nirvana, but never quite warmed to Smashing Pumpkins. I didn't like Billy Corgan's voice then and I still don't like it. I guess I didn't have enough angst to really relate to it. Nowadays I find myself gravitating more towards 70s and 80s rock.
