It's the reason I love The Pumkins so much. They're sirene and angelic and melon collie one moment, then the bottom falls out and they're instantly the deepest darkest hardest shit hole on Earth, swallowing me whole, into the abis of Billy's journey. He is an incredible guitar player and as heavy and dark as they come. Fuck I love him!
Smashing pumpkins was by far the LOUDEST concert I’ve ever been to. They put on one hell of a show and I am genuinely thankful I have been able to see them!
Agreed. Last I saw them was in the DC area, the concert just before Jonathan Melvoin OD’d and Jimmy got fired during the Melancholy/Infinite Sadness tour. AND INTO THE EYES OF THE JACKYL I SAY KAAAA…
dude, catch one with billy really playing guitar. He is in my opinion insanely overlooked as a guitarist and one of the most creative and different guitarists ever. Hes quite the music theory nerd and his strumming technique is so precise and nuanced. I am psyched to see more pumpkins videos on ur channel!!!
WOW! I'M a drummer from that era and still playing and Jimmy Chamberlain is a huge influence and inspiration! The pumpkins are a very intense band and Corgin is a freaking ROCK AND ROLL GENIUS. And seeing this performance it's clear THEY ARE ALL STILL RELEVANT! 😎🥁✌️
I think he is a better songwriter than he is a guitar player and I say this as a huge fan since Christmas 1993. Have seen them over ten times on the Australian tours. You certainly do recognise him within three notes. I listen to the pumpkins as much for the drumming as I do the guitar, probably more the drumming these days.
Billy Corgan has been way into guitar for decades now. I have seen videos of him talking music theory and the interviewer had no clue what he was talking about. The dude is a beast on guitar.
I always hate hearing the shit he got for being egotistical when recording albums. At that stage of his early career, having that songwriting skill and the skills to play all the instruments. Of course he's gonna have a big ego. Dudes a genius and fuckin knows it.
I completely agree. He is rarely recognized for his astounding guitar 🎸 work. Playing and composing. Add to that the lyrical and compositional genius and it makes me recognize I’m just a mere mortal. Billy will live forever.
I haven't kept up with the Pumpkins since the late 90's/early 2000's after D'arcy and James Iha left... then to see this and see James on stage!!! I almost shed a tear. Nearly the whole band back together. The world is a vampire.
Bro, seeing this surprise cover live? Unbelievable how heavy those riffs came across when you could feel the air moving on your face. was literally melt your face type of shit! It was amazing!
Your excitement on this one is infectious. Do more pumpkins, Billy as a guitarist will totally surprise you. He gets a lot of shit because of his ego in the early days, but honestly at that age with the skill the man has i think it would be impossible to not get a bit of an ego. Edit: If you're looking for some bad ass live sets, check out Tool. Anything by tool will rock you asunder
@@paulyguitary7651 Definitely! I've seen a few reactions to it and he's is by far my favourite. Most people just say omg this is so good. But when you know the reactor actually knows what he's talking about and appreciates on a technical level it makes it so much better. Danny Carey is just a totally different beast, Pneuma and Invincible are probably my 2 favourite songs from that album.
@@ericcsmith808 If you like him you might want to check out his side project "Jimmy Chamberlin Complex" A bit on the Jazzy side but some top shelf drumming.
It’s so fun watching these with you. I would have never seen this if it wasn’t for your community. Music appreciation is entertaining all by itself, lesson or not, thanks.
Saw this live just a few weeks ago in NY - it's HUGE and answers the question: "What would Once in a Lifetime sound like if it was written and performed by the original Black Sabbath?" I mean, sure, nobody ever thought to ask that question, but this proves that they should have...
The pumpkins are a magical band, Corgan is a talented guitarist and Jimmy Chamberlin is amazing. The production talents of Corgan and the vibe of the band is truly one of a kind.
Saw live at UBS arena… was in awe… one of best concerts of my life - psychedelia, rock, goth, dancey, heavy, transcendent. And Chamberlin’s drums underneath pulsating like an ethereal powerful massage -best drumming ever heard in my life, and all three guitarists r geniuses! Synergy!
Jeff Schroeder is a grossly underrated guitarist. SOB has the job I’ve wanted since I was 14, but that’s beside the point. He’s a truly amazing player.
@@StripeGurgerthey are totally different. James is more of a singer songwriter type...a vibe. Jeff is a shredder and total tech wizard. They balance each other well IMHO.
The smashing pumpkins were single-handedly the band that started my entire musical journey and writing songs. I will never forget that day in sixth grade when I heard the song Soma and it blew my ever loving mind
I saw them play this song on the Machina tour back in 2000 when I was 15. Over the years, Billy held back on screaming, which is why it's such a joy to see this being played again!
Loving all of your reaction videos, you have a great personality and definitely someone I wish I would’ve known to contact years ago when starting to play guitar!!not saying that I wouldn’t now, but my time is very limited .. Stay genuine, stay safe
I photographed Pumpkins at one of the first Siamese Dream shows in Milwaukee, Billy's intensity and aggression was mind-blowing and getting to watch it through a camera lens made it even more impressive.
Just picked up Smashing Pumpkins Pisces Iscariot cd at a pawn shop for my 16 year old. I did so because I occasionally hear SP emanating from her bedroom and it always warms my heart.
"He's an animal." He's just getting started. 🤟 Billy likes to stalk the listener. It's the simple, slow tread of the predator coming after you. He keeps you waiting in terror for that blow you know is gonna crush you. Sometimes, you hang suspended with an undercurrent of long, sustained notes like a scream. Sometimes he has you plummeting helplessly through space. The adrenaline builds. I have nearly had heart attacks from their music. Part of the genius here is that they captured what was ALREADY IN THE SONG. The torturous monotony of American life at middle age. The lack of fulfillment in materialistic success. How one has to reach deep within that ocean of self to find the will to go on in a society focused on all the wrong things. The undercurrent of rage that drives it all. It was always in the song. And it's perfect for Billy and his audience right now. Genius. PS your facial expressions are the best!
It’s cool to see a lot of bands paying homage to the artists who have inspired them. It’s important and also great to see how many great late 70’s and 80’s artists have an influence on todays music.
Hi Michael, greetings from the UK. I don't play guitar and have no musical bone in my body BUT I love your videos and your passionate reaction - in particular the Buckethead one and Smashing Pumpkins. Keep up the good work. Cheers,
I saw them do their cover of “Once in a Lifetime” by the Talking Heads in Toronto! It was insane, especially the fills from Chamberlin! (That just may be biased being a drummer and all)
Saw them in Atl earlier this month and it was awesome. Drums and bass were just driving and so steady. Then 3 guys that can play lead. Had no idea BC could play lead that well. They were changing guitars and bass between every song because of all the different tunings like you picked up on. Janes Addiction was cool too.
Right on, this was fantastic!! And as far as tis' the Halloween season goes, someone should tell Michael about Type O Negative, and Wolf Moon as a song. NO-ONE has a voice like that, just about no-one writes songs or lyrics that are that good. The immense power of it all, the atmosphere. Man oh man.
This was a good video I was not expecting; mostly because your excitement was so relatable. I saw them (w/Jane's Addiction) in St Paul the other week and it was an epic concert and they played this song then, too, and I was watching it then, live, like you: mind blown. 🤯 BTW, a few years ago on their last tour I saw them in Cleveland and they covered James Taylor's Fire & Ice... and it got this loud, wicked treatment too! 🤯 Smashing Pumpkins are my generation's Led Zeppelin!
Love your ego-free reaction to this, Michael. And this cover is AMAZING - it's almost a different song in a sonic sense, but it's emotional reinterpretation moves the song farther down the road it was already on. Gotta go check out some more Billy, I shorted him the first time 'round!
Easily my favorite band of all time. I just saw them perform at the Baltimore arena with Jane's Addiction and they were amazing! Definitely take a deep dive. Check out Billy's podcast Thirty-Three.
Saw them the other night in Tampa, lifelong fan, favorite band. Corgan is one of the best songwriters and guitarists of our generation. He's not John Petrucci(dream theater) or Steve Vai on the technical perfection side, but dammit he plays with everything he has. His lyrics, his music, his voice even(I love the nasal, unique voice he has) have made this band my favorite since the early nineties. Hell, almost every band in the nineties was amazing and some are still going like Weezer, Alice in Chains, etc. Do yourself a favor and find some live stuff like this throughout the years to see Corgan RIPPING solos from hell. Some of the solos from the Siamese Dream album are some of the coolest ever. Cherub Rock, Quiet, Hummer, Soma, etc. I just randomly clicked your video man, welcome to the Smashing Pumpkins club.
Even though Billy looks like he's preparing for the role of Colonel Kurtz in a reboot of Apocalypse Now... I am totally blown away by this performance. Reminds me of those few glorious moments on Pumpkins records when they really unleash the power in between the endless hours of Corgan's whines and whispers lol.
Also Jeff Schroeder... insane levels of of widdly-widdly soloing. The Pumpkins did this cover back in 2000 before they split and it was crazy then and it's crazy now.. I love how this version sounds nothing like the original song and it's just Corgan wailing and screaming. It's like Hendrix and Sabbath but more evil
Saw Smashing Pumpkins Saturday night at Budweiser stage in Toronto and it was insane! They're songs are played so much on the radio pretty much everyone knows the lyrics, whole crowd singing, sold out show. What a fantastic time. Massively underrated!
You reaction was soooo fucking good that I had to share this! We have entered into an era of perfection, where artists lean heavily on digital software to clean up everything to an exact science of sound. Bands don't even need to be in the same room any longer, just dropboxing their parts without ever meeting. Lead singers have become forgettable (with some exceptions like Sleep Token). Voices are starting to blend together in the pursuit of what is currently trending over trying to create something unique and different. In the era of the 90's we could instantly recognize a band by the first word a lead singer sang. You knew it was Chris Cornell, Billy Corgan, Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, Scott Weiland, Courtney Love, Trent Reznor etc....because they weren't trying to recreate a trending sound, but rather, they were trying to break down doors with their unique vision. I am sure that someone will defend this era of music with calling me an old dog, but I stand firmly in my resolve that it is harder today to find a unique voice than it was back then.
No, you're completely right. I'm forty and I feel this way. I will say that the band Ghost is one of the only bands that has surprised me in the last five years or so. Tobias Forge is like Corgan in many ways, he IS the band. Saw Ghost in Tampa two months ago and Smashing Pumpkins about a month ago in Tampa as well. Both were great.
@@SupermanNew52 Ghost is incredible. Tobias is an absolute artist through and through. I have written many articles that have mentioned the importance of GHOST, because they have a unique vision for their music and so much respect for their audience to put in the effort that they do. Well, it's now a GHOST day for me! Thanks!
@@empiremusicpromotions I like all the albums. I started with Meliora and then listened to the rest and it's great too. Then came Prequelle and Impera. Both great albums but I think Meliora will always be my favorite because it made me a fan. I think the song Respite on the Spitalfields is a top 5 song from Ghost now.
@@SupermanNew52 They are one of those bands that I find myself liking different songs and albums at different times. It's hard to say which is my favorite, but currently Square Hammer is on repeat.
