Smittybilt 12 Volt Air Compressor Modification. Offroad Air for 4Runner, Jeep, RV

It’s Mod Monday!
Shortened version of the Smittybilt Compressor Video.
I’ve done a couple modifications to make it more convenient to use. It’s the best air compressor for me because I added Anderson Power pole connectors for direct battery hookup without lifting the hood of the truck. I also added a standard female air fitting on the hose for use with my Milton Air Chuck and hose extesions. This is how I hook up the Anderson connectors to my 12 volt air compressor.

I went ahead and did the Anderson connectors. Great mod! Since I haven't found a great way to hard mount this big compressor on my JL Jeep, I figured I might as well make it as convenient as possible!

Saw this video last yr & immediately did it to my smittybilt. No more popping the hood. I just use the pvc sleeves they come with as a cap. Stays on and keeps debris/water out. Thanks!!

That a really smart idea with the Anderson power poles. I have a few laying around here myself, i know what i'm doing now!

They work well. I used the 45 amp Anderson Pole connectors on the alligator clamp connectors as well. Very versatile. Check out the other modification video I did on that compressor at: Smittybilt Air Compressor Modification #2. A Better Mod ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GZUU_zzAJjs.html

Great idea with the ‘exterior’ Anderson connector, I’d recommend an ANL fuse and some 1/4” conduit to protect the wires especially where they pass through metal.

Good call. I have a 40A ANL fuse leftover from my solar installation. I’ll wire that in place of the blade and throw on some flex wire conduit.

If the compressor doesn't have a relief valve, I guess you would need to be careful that the female connector is open or the air chuck fitted before starting the compressor so air can escape.

So Wichone do you use ?? The 45mp connector or 30 ?? Why did you used a 30am instead of 40 ?
@PainterDans
@PainterDans 3 года назад
Can you change the male fitting on the compressor itself to SAE, and do you know what type threads ?
@Socaloverlander

Why did you used a 30amp fuse and not 40 ?

I really appreciate your videos and resourcefulness. I'm on Amazon preparing to buy the 30 and 45 Amp Power Poles, 10AWG Wire, and 30 and 40 Amp in-line Fuses. However, there are multiple complaints about the fuses melting and being a potential fire hazard. What has been your experience so far and what do you make of these concerns?

I really like the set up. Couple of questions: does it have to be a 30 and 45 amp power poles? and a 10awg wire? thanks!

Hi! I bought a 12volt arb portable twin air compressor. It has alligator clamps and its heavy. It has 2 pc maxi fuse 40 amp for positive (One for each compressor). The complete set weight 15 kg and its heavy so i plan just to leave the unit at the truck so i do nit have to bring the entire unit down. So, i plan to cut off the alligator clamps and replace with anderson clamp. So, it will have 3 pc anderson connector, (2pc positive and 1 pc negative). Each positive line will have 40 ampere load and the negative will have 80 amp load. The total length of the wire for positive will be 20 feet and 20 feet for negative. May i ask what size of positive wire and for negative wire should i use. Hope for you kind help.

I have a Warn Zeon 10-S winch. Do you know if I can power the Smittybilt AC from the Zeon 10-S power port, which is used for the winch's remote control? Basically, the port can be used for both the winch remote control, and as the power source for the Smittybilt AC. Is this possible?

Hey, thanks for the video…great work! I have the same compressor and was also thinking of adding the Anderson connectors, so I could leave a line sticking out of the front grill. Do you think that the wiring they used, which looks like 10AWG, is ok? Wondering if I should go with something like 8 or 6AWG, and also open and re-wire the compressor with thicker wiring…especially with lengthening the wire even more with the extra wire on the compressor and under the hood. I’m thinking that’ll increase resistance and heat, making it more likely that the wire will overheat and melt…

Yeah, if you’re extending the wire, increase the size. If you’re wiring to the battery, don’t forget to install an in-line 40A fuse. Automotive Blade style or marine style breaker works.

I'm not sure what kind of hose this guy got with his compressor, but just did a similar swap minus the female coupler. My hose is 3/16" id, not 1/4" as most stores carry accessories for. Went to a local hose and hydraulic shop and found a 3/16" barb fitting with an 1/8" male end and then got a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter to attach a female air chuck. Seems to work okay, only issue now is when i run the compressor first before hooking the chuck to the tire, the release valve on the side keeps blowing. If I hook it up first then turn it on, seems to work okay. Just from my own experience

MrSnoekers Hi, I updated the parts list in the video description back in March 2019. The hose is definitely 3/16”. I heated mine up some for a very snug fit but the correct 3/16” fittings are now in the parts list. Thanks for the comment

Sure thing. I’m still really liking the compressor. I hope they offer it with the more standard connections in the future. Would save the hassle of swapping the connections.

I bought the compressor and the accessories you listed because I liked your idea. The hose is 1/8” and the fitting is 1/4” I didn’t realize that when I bought it. How did you get that fitting on the hose. I can’t, and can’t find an 1/8”fitting anywhere.

Do you have to use the power pole connectors? Or can I use a simple crimping took with larger connectors and heat shrink?

Since the compressor doesn’t have a tank do you power it off when you’re not delivering air to a tire? Seems like it’s an “on demand” only system
@covetthecamper2289
@covetthecamper2289 4 года назад
It has a pressure blow-off valve. It will release pressure when not connected to the tire valve but it will not shut off. However, it is best to power it off when not connected due to the heat generated. This is where the Viair 450-RVS excels over the Smittybilt. The Viair will cycle on/off while connected or disconnected from the tire valve as pressure is met.
