Why can't they just come out with a smoke detector that can simply announce, "smoke detector needs new batteries," or, "smoke detector needs to be replaced," Instead of making that annoying beeping noise.

Because they want you to fix the problem. The more annoying they make the sound, the more likely you are to fix it. It’s a safety feature.

It's nearly 4am and mine is chirping. It's hardwired so it I just push the button mine will stop chirping. Then all will start alarming for 2 minutes to sync up. The alarming in each family members room will start and wake everyone up thinking there's a fire.

I have one that's chirping right now, but it's too high up for me to reach it. I have cathedral ceiling in the living room, which is where it's located.

Thank you!! And thank you for the very clear presentation, much appreciated in itself. I don't know what all this talk about "unplugging" (like from an electrical outlet?) I've encountered through Kidde manuals and on RU-vid is about, but now I know I gotta getta new Kidde S&CM alarm (mine lasted 11 yrs.). Thanks for breaking it (the breakdown) down. Hey, does the top of your head have an alarm ;+} ? JUST KIDDING!! And thanks again, Jay: you're more than okay..

The unplugging talk is because many smoke detectors are hardwired into your electrical system. In that case, you would shut off the breaker, twist the smoke detector to remove it from the bracket and then “unplug” it. At that point, you would remove the battery and do the reset that I show. If it isn’t hardwired, you can skip the unplugging step. Unfortunately, the alarm in my head doesn’t detect smoke 😂

It has to be unplugged and to do that, turn off breaker, for this to work.

It very well could beep persistently if it’s expired. Are you able to remove and check the mfg date on the back? Another issue can be dust or dirt on the sensor. You can try to blow it out but I’ve often had better luck just replacing it, especially if it is older.

Smoke alarm was chirping. It has expired. I've removed it from the ceiling and now only wires are coming out from the ceiling. I've turned off the mains to the smoke alarm. I can't get a replacement until tomorrow. For tonight there will be no chirping though?

They should all have battery backup at least. Even if they are hardwired.

I've done all this!!!!!! Mine isn't expired!!! It still won't stop!!!! If anyone sees this and can help PLEASE comment back!!!!! This thing is driving me INSANE!!!! my poor cats have been under the bed for two days, won't come out.

I’d replace the whole unit. If this didn’t work and you held the button with it disconnected from the power, the only other thing I can think is there is dirt in the sensor. You could try to blow it out with a can of compressed air but the last time I bought a can it was $10 so you might just put that towards a new one. Good luck! 🍀

@@JaysPlace2468 thank you! I tried to get it apart,open, what ever to just disconnect it and could not get it! It was stuck. I had the hardest time with the dang thing! I finally got a neighbor to come get it for me, thank goodness. It was driving me crazy! I have an eight year old son who is autistic and don't like loud noise, and I have two cats (cats have like super hearing) so it was really bothering all of them, even more than me...... Anyway my neighbor saved the day! Yay!! Lol

These things always happen at the worst times. I used to run into the same problem then my dad gave me a battery daddy for Christmas and I keep it stocked with a few of everything for those unexpected moments when you need a battery. Hope you were able to silence it to get some sleep.

I’m sorry, I wish there was a universal fix for all smoke detectors. This has worked for many. Is yours out of date and in need of replacement by chance?

@@JaysPlace2468 no, it has just been in there since 2021. First alert. I could not find the circuit breaker it was on. Finally called the electrician who did the work and he told me I could pull those white, red and black wires without getting electrocuted. It was 2 1/2 hours that ruined my peaceful morning. 😩

There should be a way to easily silence a malfunctioning smoke detector.
