Is there a difference in biomarkers of smoke exposure between reducing nicotine content of cigarettes immediately vs gradually? This JAMA video abstract summarizes a randomized trial that compares the effects of immediate vs gradual vs no reduction in nicotine content on breath carbon monoxide (CO) measures and other biomarkers of cigarette smoke exposure. The best tip to help you become a non smoker. When you quit and you see other people smoking and you crave a cigarette and wish you could be them always remember that those people wish they could be you and they wish they weren't a slave to such a debilitating habit that nobody wants to be around.

Tapering off is honestly the best. Cold Turkey is great for the first few days but the withdrawal symptoms are wild!!. When you taper off your body has time to adjust and symptoms are less. I’ve done both and speak from experience. Tapering off also means for example. Smoke 5 today, 4 the next day, 3, then 2, then 1, then half, then none
@Itzbrady_

So true. Just like why when someone wants to quit caffeine they do it gradually slowly lowering the dose. Its easier to taper off..

I tried cold turkey and failed twice. Resulting in heavy smoking relapse. On the other hand, the habit of smoking increased after reducing the concentration of nicotine by changing type of cigarettes, since you need to smoke multiple cigarettes to be on the same level of nicotine. Nowadays i'm trying again by tapering off in order not to get affected by withdrawal symposium while working. Wish me luck :)

Patience is the key in my experience. Don't try and force it. Gradually make the change in levels of MG when your ready, you'll know it when your ready. On month 3 now of quitting smoking for the 2nd and last time, did 6 months last year, cold turkey is the best principal - and the ethos of fail and fail again until your done failing :) it took me around 3 years of putting in the mentality, and now it's easy.
@pattyd.7248
@pattyd.7248 3 года назад
if you keep quitting smoking over and over cold turkey, then it isn't the best principal maybe? I did it gradual reduction because cold turkey wasn't happening for me at all. identify and get control of the trigger that makes you fail. I had to actually read a book, it had both methods, because cold turkey does not always work for people.
@Joanna-gg4qx
@Joanna-gg4qx 3 года назад
@@pattyd.7248 I think in each case it depends on the individual. But my point is more so that we should learn how to healthily fail, with the right connection to this I managed to train my brain to not normalise and not desire it at all anyway. Eventually you spend more time as a non smoker as you do a smoker. I’m sure gradually reducing seems ideal for most, or maybe literature too, but sometimes it’s just simple psychology. I’m now on month 8 of not smoking and still have no desire of going back, after 10 years of smoking regularly, I think the chapter of quitting in the last 3 has just helped reinforce a new skill in saying no.

2 weeks for me. I had it bad. I went cold turkey after 4 years vaping salt nicotine it was horrible for me and I might have damaged myself but the doctors say there’s no way I damaged myself yet at 19 but I went cold turkey and had a lot of symptoms. My symptoms were so bad that I thought I had heart failure my legs started tingling and my head was heavy i started having a light trouble breathing but I think just because nicotine is a muscle relaxer I probably had the same problem and never noticed. I even had heart palpitations which was so scary because I almost passed out but the doctor had prescribed me prednisone the night before and he thinks that 60mg prednisone + running 2 miles + nicotine withdraw could easily cause palpitations especially if I already had a few in the first place. I even went to a cardiologist and we haven’t ran any tests besides at the ER every doctor reassured me that I’m perfectly healthy and no reason to worry. Just push through guys you can do it the first time I tried to stop I got extremely sick and this time I didn’t I just had some physical health problems but I don’t think that it’s actually health problems it’s just my body tricking my mind asking for it’s medicine when there isn’t any

Best of luck to everyone else who is also trying to quit. Oddly I can quit and not have a terrible withdrawal period. My issue is that after many weeks my mood starts to sink way down, and it doesn’t get back up again. My approach now - I don’t bring cigarettes with me when I leave the house. No smoking at work, or when I’m hanging out with friends and family, or when I’m just out for the day on my own. I want my brain/mood to be less dependent on cigarettes. My next step will be nicotine replacement, lozenges or gum, maybe a lower-strength patch, and I’ll do that for as long it takes

Hi There! Good for you that you decided to not smoke today. Very brave. In 10 minutes, I am on my third day of not smoking. About your complaints: do you have a cough and/or trouble breathing more than before? It sounds odd but after 1-2 days of not smoking, your lungs will start to clean themselves which causes to feel like you have smoked a pack. At least for me. I also noticed my heart rate going up. This is also the effect of not smoking. I think you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms here, and your lungs cleaning themselves, but if you are unsure you can always consult a doctor. I am wishing you all the best! :)

@Ranjit Tyagi Good for you for completing your first day as a non-smoker! Depending on your age and your (physical) health, a heart rate of high 40's while resting in bed seems fine to me, but I am not a doctor. My doctor explained to me that cigarettes contain CO, which is basically poison. CO binds to your blood faster than oxygen, therefore your heart needs to work harder to get the oxygen around your body as needed. Without the CO, it won't have to work as hard. My fitbit gives me insights in my heart rate. For me personally, it increased before it decreased, probably due to stress of not smoking, but it has lowered too. I am really sorry and I would like to offer my condolences for losing your mom. I wish you all the best and feel free to message me.

When people quit smoking after a very long time, the first symptom is cough. This cough will last just couple of days. The cough actually clears the tar built up inside the lungs. So, it's a good thing. Anxiety is another very common symptom and anxiety itself can cause hundreds of various weird symptoms but they aren't deadly even though it may make one feel that he or she is about to die.

@@CasperLD how long did it take for your cravings to stop. I have been smoking for 19 years
@CasperLD
@CasperLD 4 года назад
@@familyman831 Craving stopped at about day 15 or 16. By 3 weeks I was totally free of cravings. I smoked a pack a day for 17 years. The best piece of advice I'd give anyone quitting is : TAKE IT SERIOUSLY, as if your life depends on it, and it might. I went on a 40 day diet of no sugar or starch. Then I quit drinking alcohol for 3 weeks, all to prepare for the day I quit smoking. Being disciplined in those areas helped me a lot to stop smoking. Those first two weeks are a nightmare. When you get through that it gets easier. Remember you are not "giving up" smoking because that implies sacrifice. You are liberating yourself from poisoning your body.

Lol they'll never. If they wanted smokers to quit... daamagging themselves. They would incorporate nicotine into less harmful matter, and reduce it from that.

Except nicotine isn't any worse for you than caffeine. It's actually good for you. It's the other chemicals in cigarettes that are addictive and harmful

But if cigarettes won't have nicotine anymore, it'll be easier for people to quit. And harder for new smokers to get addicted.

@@wishmeluck4933 totally false. Industry documents, court testimony, and advertisements all show that the tobacco industry has been working for decades to equate nicotine with innocuous vices like coffee, tea, or gummy bears. You fell hook, line and sinker for this nonsense. Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs on the planet. Caffeine is not.

I was a smoker for 8 years. I smoked weed. Took drugs. Drinks and lot. Now I am free from all of these toxic materials. I would suggest to read self love books which will give you a different feel to quit smoking.. I got inspired from the great speeches of Osho and finally, one day I felt joy and happiness is something available inside your soul and outside the nature. Smoking is just a 5 minutes pleasure and it doesn't last more. I searched for permanent happiness inside me and finally I am now a non-smoker and enjoying my life along with the nature

Ban cigarettes, ban tobacco products/production, burn all existing stock, ban nicotine patches, gum, tablets etc. No more nicotine addictions and cigarettes would become an illness of the past. What, you got withdrawal? , tough, suck it up and let it be a lesson to you.
