I volunteered to help start an ALCO RS-3 that hadn't run in near 10 years and due to traffic they had already started her and declared the engine junk it ran so poorly by the time I arrived at the shop. When I asked a few questions as to what they did before starting her they got mad at me until I asked it they cleaned out the primary fuel filter and they said we changed both of them. You do know there are three fuel filters right? Stony silence was my answer so I climbed up on her and opened the door next to the primary fuel filter and explained the primary was a fixed fuel filter and not a screw on filter and proceeded to take the top off the filter and reached inside and pulled out the filter assembly that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. After cleaning the assembly, it was designed to be cleaned and reused and cleaning the filter housing and reassembling it we then started her back up and everyone said now she sounds normal. Later we cleaned over 400 pounds of crud and sludge out of the fuel tank by draining the tank the removing the clean out ports and using high pressure hot water and in addition to the sludge we found the remains of several rags and we got 23 spanners out of her. Not surprisingly the fuel filters last much longer now.
Great to See a “Project” 37 with Exposed Structure & Inspection panels open. Even tho it’s my personal “Fave”, with an Agricultural Start-up Procedure like that, no Wonder they earned the Nickname of “Tractor” - apart from the Immense Pulling Power Obvs. Great Vid 🚂🎥🥇👍🏻
I rather like the McRat dragging the Type 3 out of the shed. Especially as she is one of the few that does not tick over at what used to be notch 1........
At 3:59 is that a 'Haynes' Class 37 Workshop manual they are consulting? Man in orange overalls says to man in red overall: "Are ye sure, absolutely sure that ye didnae miss anything out?"
+Dafydd Llywych-Hwllch i do it on weekends as a volunteer, where i live there is a heritage line that is charity funded. its fantastic being able to work on old 70s locos and steam engines from the 40s
Jersey Mike's Rail Videos they sound the same as an old alco starting in this case, the 251 engine especially. The rickety sound comes in part from having no exhaust silencing, just a turbo outlet that is about 4" long! (2 in this case).
raulox71 English Electric diesel engines always smoke heavily when started from cold, unlike Sulzers. Sulzers start with no struggle, EEs with all the drama of a steam locomotive! I like both......
