@@Username-2 Well its not really an investment, its speculation, More like real estate than stocks. If you buy stocks you're giving your money to say a steel company for them to use with the promise of a return on your investment, hopefully with interest, when you buy a car or a house and expect to sit on it then sell it in 5 years you are speculating, there is no positive effect on the economy or anyone else at all.
Same concept as keeping toys in boxes. Wear and tear causes depreciation in value. However for someone who has all the money in world and late in his years having an investment such as this is an a non issue. My hope is they're all put in a museum before he dies so they're not sold off by family
I was shocked watching this video. The car is absolutely gorgeous, the paint and just to look at its beautiful, but the way it keeps up with and maintains driving conditions with modern cars was absolutely incredible.
@@brandonhill3283 He said “in a more eco-friendly way” you illiterate. To his point, there are other ways we could generate the heat for a steam engine like this.
@@dxb8086 oh yeah thats right, so when vehicles get auctioned off for charity thats useless, i figure they should also tear down the roman colosseum because well, thats not helping out the poor! lets bomb the pyramids in egypt too because fuck it, they dont serve as shelter for the poor either. its called preservation you moron. if you dont understand that you are one special kind of idiot.
I know we all love Leno but man, what a cool guy. Spent his wealth on something he loves, and he's preserving American history as well. And on top of all of that he actually DRIVES all his cars!! No garage queens for Jay.

When a media multi millionaire gets stuck with a film crew on an antic car in the middle of a busy road, and no one comes to help, you know you're in L.A. .
Imagine being the people that commute daily in this area, just to see a random guy in a mustache and some random old guy with fancy, yet collectible cars
What is really amazing is that when they stall the engine (almost impossible with steam, but there you go) that all the other vehicles just drive around it without laying on the horn and using the middle finger. Total respect for a glorious old lady.
I think Jay mentioned the engine was at top dead center. The piston was probably stopped at a perfect middle ground between it's stroke and needed a push.
I Believe he Really had OTHER PROBLEMS like Transmission linkage stuck in two gears, cause it's damn near impossible to have a TWO CYLINDER Steam Engine get stuck on top (or Bottom) Dead Center. Happens All-Too-Often with Single Cylinder Steam Engines, but Twins Generally have Offset Crank Journals that Eliminate That Problem.
@@oldSawyer If they are properly quartered, meaning to say offset by exactly 90°, it's impossible to get them stuck. But I don't know about Car Engines that rev relatively high, maybe they would run very rough if they weren't offset by 180° as a Diesel or Petrol Engine would be. But Stationary, Locomotive and Ship Steam Engines alway are quartered for that exact Reason.
Exactly @@Genius_at_Work . . . I couldn't find any good pictures of the WHITE or DOBLE Engines, but the STANLEY Was set at 90 degrees and with good counterbalance weights were smooth enough to hold the Steam Powered LAND SPEED Record for Over 100 Years.
@@oldSawyer It's more a Question of RPM though. I did some rough Calculations on Steam Locomotives and it boils down to about 150-180 1/min with the very visible Balancing Weights on the Wheels. Marine Steam Engines are similar, e.g. the 1600 kW Triple Expansion Engine on the Icebreaker "Stettin" (a Museum Ship in Hamburg) reaching up to 120 1/min.
I would have loved if they pulled into a service station and said "can you take a look at my engine, I think something sounds weird". (insert look on mechanic's face here)
judging by this video I must say steam cars are totally ok to drive nowadsys at least in cities (dunno about long distance). if they made modern cars with that technology, it would be nice.
truth be told: steam engines are as green (or even better than that) as electric cars. and the fuels are completely renewable. i mean: main fuel is water and the burner fuel can be made in a biogas generator, your average wastewater cleaning facility or from old french fries oil. and the green part is actualy about their thermal efficiency.
Sometimes I've found the really quiet vehicles scare them more. I've driven past horses enough times (not honking/revving my engine), but tried to sneak past one on a bicycle and it got skittish and the rider told me to announce my coming first.
I Am so in love with the steam motors, I watch you steam cars over n over ,Thats the exact thing I Love Jay Leno, His knowledge of the Steam Cars and her complete technology makes me love this guy. “Jay’s and his complete collection of automobile’s will always be a legend “
VW actually works on new steam cars since 2005. Permanent combustion is way cleaner than interneal combustion which has to happen in a few millisecounds.
Overengineering Hello, somehow you caught my attention with that Wv making new steam cars, but I couldnt find any piece of information on that topic. Where did you see that ? Could you please point me somewhere ?
driving manual instead of automatic doesnt make you a skilled driver calm tf down. anybody can drive anything. 80 year old men can shred skateboards. shut up.
I used to work the steam trains at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World. Not much different. They're oil burners too. Used compressed air to purge the system of the condensed steam and to start the atomization of the fuel. Used a ball of cotton to start the fire in the fire box. When we would have Top Dead Center of the piston, we would take the J-Bar (used for controlling the length of the stroke of the piston in the cylinder) adjust it to reverse with the steam cocks open (so not to create too much of a jerk release some of the pressure in the cylinder and make it easier to maneuver) and then back into forward. Worked like a charm! Brings back a lot of memories of working on the trains!

@@lydiaanderson3312 I afraid that my wife would not approve. She and I have been married 52 years and are still very much in love. She is the jealous type ya know.
Man what a dream this would be. Leno is a real enthusiast and knows so much about the history. I'd love to be able to chat with him for just an hour or two.
Probably nothing. Here in Colorado, if you have a fleet of at least 25 cars, you can be "self insured", so if you are in an accident you just pay out of pocket, because they know if you don't pay, the person can sue you and you have enough equity to pay.
It depends. The more cars you have, even if you do have to pay insurance, the less it costs per car. I think they figure you can only drive one at a time, so the more you have, the less you drive each car. My Tesla costs me a little over $850 a month for insurance, but my friend who owns a fleet of 6 of them, only pays $1100 a month.
Jay bought this from my uncle Ron in Boise ID. Many good memories with this and other cars that my uncle restored. What a fun blast from the past. I was always amazed watching my uncle toil on rebuilding these types of cars over the years. He loved it. Jay, thanks for carrying this on! Although this is a sentimental favorite, I want to ride your turbine motorcycle that starts trees on fire and melts plastic on cars that are too close!
I saw a steam car going west on Olympic in the Sawtelle area one late afternoon at the end of a horrific day at the office. I was so elated; I could hardly wait to get home and call my car-loving father. I was clear under the 405 freeway before I remembered he'd been dead for decades. I called Webb Farrer instead, and he told me the car was probably Jay's. A great experience, for which I'm greatful.
What an awesome car, I have never seen a steam car before. Here in the UK we have many steam enthusiasts who preserve and actually use steam tractors and trucks and of course our heritage steam railways in a few parts of the country which carry passengers every day.
i love how Jay is just like "wonna give it a try ?" that just shows that hese cars are ment to be driven and shown to the world and i think we are many who salute you for sharing this with the world ! :D
This is why I love this channel. You get to see so many unusual cars that you might never EVER get to see in your entire life, and Jay doesn't just show you the car and talk about it, he actually takes it out for a drive, and in doing so, takes us all out for a drive too. I'm hooked.
Not really. they're fun because it's a rare novelty. We got used to modern cars and technology. If you took any modern piece of equipment back 200 years people would abandon their steam engines and worship you as a God.
@@Horny_Fruit_Flies True enough, if we could only have some perspective and be thankful for what we do have we'd realize we've got it pretty good, and we'd be a lot happier.
Wow! Leno sure knows everything about all of his cars. He'll grab tools, get on his hands and knees or roll around on the floor to fix/work on his cars. And, he can drive ANYTHING he owns. He's a true classic car guy.
Jay Leno is a treasure, he has a lot of knowledge and his enthusiasm for cars combined with his money has helped restore and preserve many pieces of history for the future.
To Jay, today I want to give you a thumbs up, and my highest admiration for the gentleman you have evolved into and for the dedication and hard work you do to make restoring cars a work of art. You are the true entrepreneur getting your hands dirty making yourself knowledgeable about each car and being a real human being who actually cares and is as professional at the same time, I just can't say enough of how impressed I am. Thank You Very Much for making collecting cars so much fun.
I helped my friend David Sarlin make a two speed transmission for the English Ford Prefect? that he converted to steam, it had the same engine as Jay's White steam car, this was back in the 1970s, I think.
it would start in 15 seconds and have full steam in 2 min. drive like most cars but requiring servicing every 2000km or 1 month The Electric starter killed both steam and electric vehicles in the end
our MPG would be through the roof and when you run out of fuel on a road trip, just throw some trash and tinder from the side of the road and your good to go for free, we could tow a train, carbon footprint would be lower, and we wouldn't have to hear people with excessively loud exhausts. Gas combustion engine is more efficient then boiler and steam, BUT people seem to forget you can toss anything into a furnace to make heat(trash, gas, wood, leaves, coal, electric heating, etc.), gas on the other hand has to be extracted, refined, transported and sold to us plebs to dump into our engine. Really is a shame steam lost out, electric is the next opportunity though.
Mr. leno, its all ways good to see your collection of cars. I been there whith Mae a Wish foundation. I trasport wish kids now. I remember those good all days, when I was transporting gests for your show. Am retired now and working on old cars. Tank you for videos.
14:35 "I"m at top dead center", that just cracks me up, Jay was like, "get out and push". All that torque and they couldn't get the engine to turn over. lmao!
most likely has nothing to do about torque. I have seen this many times on bigger engines like MaK 6M552C The cylinder is in a position where nothing will happen, so you got to turn it for it to start.
Yeah that's what you get with a single-cylinder machine. That's why steam locomotives have the cylinders offset by 90 degrees, can't really give those a push...
Actually that's pretty true Part of the starting process involves heating the water chamber to begin producing steam. And a lotta fire does a lotta heating
I’m gonna be heading out to LA sometime next year and I’ll have to remember to take my nitroglycerin with me cause if I’m sitting at a light and these two guys pull up beside me in one of jays magnificent old cars I’ll probably wind up having a heart attack...what a honor for Jay Leno to even offer you to drive it let alone ride in it....(meaning that most of us don’t know him in person or own a show like this) but still a honor.....this White steam is my favorite out of his other White/Stanley steamer cars....👍🏼
