Diggle Diaries: An attempt to film all daylight running freight and interesting workings from Diggle Junction. Situated on the picturesque Trans-Pennine, Manchester to Huddersfield and Leeds route, Diggle Jn lies at the top of a steep incline leading into Standedge Tunnel. Providing beautiful scenery, varied freight and trains working hard up the hill, there aren’t many better places for a bit of trainspotting.
This month includes:
- Ice in the tunnel!!
- Strike day DRAX diversions
- Newly painted 37405 makes a visit
- Lindsey Tanks finally run
- TPE prepare for the new timetable
- And much more...

The tunnel portal with the red "Danger Light" always reminds me of Dickens' "The Signal-Man" . . . a story that delighted & "haunted" me as a young teenager (and still does). I was vaguely surprised that the interior of the tunnel was subject to icing. I would have thought it was "insulated" like a deep cave and probably never dropped to below freezing in there (at least away from the immediate entrances). I guess that must be an incorrect assumption! Good to see you on camera! I hope you make that a regular thing, --Mike

Many Thanks Mike, first time trying something like that so I was a little apprehensive. The age of the tunnel just means there’s a few gaps in the brickwork and the water table always finds it’s way through! I’ve not thought of The Signal Man for a long time, thanks for the memory! All the best.
