Snowy Cargo Bike VLOG in the Netherlands

On this VLOG style video I dig into all the sports tech for my 5 hour cargo bike adventure in the snow. From GoPro Hero 9 and GoPro Max tidbits, to plenty of great drone shots with the DJI Mavic Air 2, and details on how well the Urban Arrow cargo bike handles in the snow. Oh, and a bit of watch stuff as I'm testing out the Garmin Enduro watch for longer durations.
This is mostly just a fun and quick vlog as I figured folks would find this intersection of geek tech with bike tech.

Indeed - we love it! And indeed, the thumbnail shot is a great local windmill. I think in total we ticked off 5 or 6 different windmills on the route!

Thanks for the review! I can’t wait to get one of these bicycles for family and commuting. Also, I love the Jackery as well as I use it to charge my electronics and if your bike battery died, you can charge it with the Jackery

Thank you! It is amazing how easy you make it all look considering the amount of gadgets and devices you use to create those videos. It was very interesting to see how basically okay it is to drive in warm European winter. I always thought it was not a bike season. Of course we have to remember that you were driving a very heavy bike.

We recently bought a Tern GSD to haul around our kids. I wish we could have got a cargo bike with the front bucket, like yours, but I don't think we could have got it into the door of our NYC apartment for storage. Love the vlog.

Yeah, the Tern bikes are cool, but for what we needed - it's just lots of cargo space. But Tern makes sense for a lot of other use cases like you noted.

I’m trying to pick between a GSD and the UA Family… Tern has great range, easier to store the bike and I think maybe the 2 kids will fit on the Tern a few years longer than they’d both fit in the UA? (Is hard to find info on this and I’ve no local dealers for either brands.) The UA looks great for hauling bulkier items, also cool/more fun to have the kids up front instead of at the back. Decisions decisions…. 🤔

Loved the sled rope idea, my wife, not so much lol Looking forward to test my Urban Arrow in snow, I spent two years with the old school wood/steel model with no electrics, my life has changed! What happens when the battery dies in that thing? How hard is it to manually pedal? That sounds like a work out! I have one of those Jackery Solar Generators too, they're awesome to have for all sorts of things!

It's not too hard to pedal without battery, but I find it puts me in an awkward cadence to resistance range until you get up to speed. But once at speed, it hums along pretty well sans-battery. I've run out many times over the years and got home fine (usually slower though). But with the resistance of the snow, it would have really sucked to run out. It's funny, Dec 2019, I bought a solar panel add-in for the Jackery, as it was on sale one day and shipped it to Des, figuring he would just throw it in his luggage a few months later when we saw each other next since it wouldn't be worth it to ship over here. Sigh, I still haven't seen Des (or the solar panel).

@@Dcrainmaker ha! If it makes you feel any better I still haven’t used the solar panel with it. It’s easier to plug it in or charge it in the car 🤷‍♂️

@@ChaseTheSummit Haha...yeah, the rough idea was for my Eurobike road trips in the RV, there's usually a few days where I go off-grid entirely. While the RV's I rent can re-charge the Jackery while driving, or if plugged into a station, it actually can't recharge parked in the middle of nowhere. So, the idea being I'm off hiking/riding/whatever for 6-8hrs, and it can charge the unit back at the RV, giving me enough laptop/gadget gear juice for the night. But, Eurobike road trip didn't happen last year...

I'll probably do so in the spring. This is actually our second one we own now, and we bought this one back in December. So I've got three years of experience, and want to basically do a review on the newer one (which is very similiar to the existing one). But long story short is we love them. We don't own a car, so this is how we get our family of three kiddos around.

At 2:23 did the car not have right of way, perhaps roundabouts work differently in Amsterdam than in the UK?

The car did have the right of way. There are a few roundabouts in the Netherlands where the outside circle is a bike lane so you can almost always hop on as a biker, but those are relatively rare and only in inner cities as far as I know. That said, the car slowed down (and stopped) to create space. Which is just a nice thing to do.

Both of them have their strengths and weaks. I am also still on the "old" one just because it is quite easy to handle. The new one looks better and offers more windows to the passengers. So it depends.

@@alantaylorfarnes as soon as the kids get older the new cover is probably superior. Mine are "just new arrived" and 2 y old... So I will stick to the old for at least 2 more years. It is easier to lift the whole cover to reach into the baby seat than operating through a window. Anyways, it great to have options. 😁

Great video! Besides the tech, how about bike tools? Did you ever had a flat tire or any other issue with the bike during these rides? How was the experience to deal with it?

I've only ever had one flat, due to over-inflation, and it happened about 4.8 seconds after leaving the bike pump at the shop (a compressor one). I've replaced the brake pads and such before, but realistically this bike isn't ideal for any sort of mid-trip flat tire swaps. With bike shops everywhere in the Netherlands, you'd basically just slow-roll it to a bike shop and they'd sort it out.

What tire size do you use on your Urban Arrow cargo bike? I am in the market for an e-bike in Toronto, Canada (icy bike lanes, rare plowing, -10 C average. -20C worst, -30 rare). What tire size would you recommend? I was thinking alternating between a fat tire (20 x 4”) and a studded tire (20 x 1.8”) on a cargo e-bike that fits in my apartment elevator.
