The Urban Arrow Family is a family oriented box bike that lets you see your precious cargo, up to three small children in the front, and maneuver like a traditional bicycle on two wheels. Bike weight and cargo weight is kept low and center for stability. Thoughtfully designed rain cover, poncho, baby seat adapter, rear rack, and double battery options expand the possibilities. Available in black or white, the seat tube angle and highly adjustable stem and handlebar provide a wide range of fit options. The frame and tires have reflective accents for safety, along with the optional cargo covers, and premium lights let you ride comfortably at dawn or dusk. Great fenders and full-surround chain cover keep you clean. The step-thru frame is approachable but very stiff, the bike doesn't flex as much as many two wheel long tail cargo bikes I've reviewed but it is heavier overall. The kickstand is very sturdy but easy to deploy and stow. Pedals, saddle, grips, and puncture-resistant balloon tires are above average for improved comfort. Durable Enviolo CVT drivetrain provides shifting at standstill and ramped vs. stepped cadence adjustability but adds cost and weight. Bosch Cargo Line motor is their most powerful, but spends power more quickly. Upgraded ebike specific hydraulic disc brakes are perfect for a bike this size. Higher capacity Bosch PowerPack 500 than previous generation.

That is one impressive cargo bike, for the price that undercuts the Riese and Muller cargo carriers, yet bringing in a nice components spec package, featuring the Bosch mid drive. Well done to the Urban Arrow folks, I hope they sell a lot of them!

Me too, Michael. I'm sure they invested a lot of money and time into this design, and it seemed like all of the accessories were executed well. That rain cover alone is very cool... the poncho has a window down so you can look through and into the cargo box ahead and still check on the kids. It's all completely custom and I'm grateful they chose to invest in the concept :)

I love this bike, but OMG, 100 dollars for a mat, and 300 for that extra bench seems crazy. I don't even have kids, but this bike makes me want to borrow my friend's kids to give them rides around the neighborhood.

Love this type of bike, but after some comparing I went for the Cube Cargo myself. Biggest benefit on that one is that 1) it has front wheel suspension, 2) the bicycle position is better so you can actually drive it at 27km/h manually (here above 25 the motor stops supporting), 3) it comes with dual batteries that both connect to the motor for slightly less money than the standard UA. So 1kWh allows you to do over 120km range. My advise (I have kids), to let the rain cover for what it is. It vastly degrades riding comfort, rain during rides is minimal, and if you have some flexibility with radar apps you can avoid most rain, and it is a pain to use on all dry days (which happens to be 20 times as many). We even let the seats out as they rather sit on the floor of the box. It also improves the mass center location. But here in the Netherlands bike safety perception is very different: we don't belt kids or give them helmets. Only expats do.

how did the riding experience compare, specifically the suspension? was it a noticeable improvement with the Cube? also, is the dual battery a bigger pain to deal with when you stop at a store/etc, or is it a non-issue / completely worth the hassle for the extra range? (thanks in advance!)

@@cneubauer2 The suspension is a must have. It makes the Cube ride on much rougher terrain, also the kids don't get a headache on speed bumps. The dual battery is optional, we leave one at home in the charger most of the time. Only on long rides we take both. I never get them off at the store. The lock is good enough for leaving it unattended for a few hours at daylight. We take them off at home, but more for the cold nights.

@@Nor-qf6uv Bij Premium Bikes. Meestal heb ik zoiets van garantie heb ik toch nooit nodig. Maar ze hebben de fiets wel opgehaald en teruggebracht voor garantie. Omdat het terugsturen van de Bosch motor betrof, was de fiets wel een paar weken onbruikbaar. Bezopen natuurlijk voor een defecte lamp. Hier in de stad zat wel een dealer, maar toen ik daar een testrit maakte had ik weinig feducie in goede service. Sterker nog, ooit vlak voor hun deur een lekke band gehad, de ANWB kwam dat maken en die gasten van de fietsenwinkel zeiden wij plakken geen banden meer. Hoe krom. Maar tip, ook voor Urban Arrow, Lovens en de rest: met een bakfiets voel je je alsof je vluchteling bent. Geen fietszaak heeft er zin in. Kies m dus echt uit op eigen onderhoud, en dat is met de Cube prima. Zo'n lovens met fancy lichtjes en kabelbesturing zou ik nooit aan beginnen. Als de lamp nog een keer stuk gaat na de garantie krijgt ie gewoon een bypass naar de batterij met een wipschakelaar. Fancy gedoe via boordcomputer....

Really comprehensive review. I have a 2018 UA Family and you hit all the good stuff. However, I am so happy that you can’t take the key out unless you’re locking the bike. My kids would have lost that key long ago if that was the case! We have one of those spiral coil keychains that you can put on your wrist and it’s never been an issue. Thanks for showing all the new stuff!

I had the oposite. The cube steers tighter, the sit position is way more natural, it feels lighter when you go beyond the support speed limit, probably because it is 10kg lighter and you legs are more effective right up, is has suspension, very important for your cargo, and dual batteries so you can to 25km communtes in bad weather without worries. It also looks better, not the drab "bakfietsmam-look", especially with rain cover an AU looks shite. I also like it has 1k smaller price because they leave a lot of garbage off: child seats, a zillion reflectiors, chain cover, but you do get 1kW! Only nice touch on the AU is the saddle-handle, but the saddle itself is bad again.

Minor point, but that bike seat--the Selle Royale--is flat out the best bike seat I have tried after 35 years of biking and spending a lot of coin on accessories.

LOVE IT! The perfect bike for those that live in areas where you can get about without the need for a car. It would definitely be my choice if that were the case for me. Sure, it might be a bit pricey, but a whole lot less than a car. I like the shorter version for use as a cargo carrier.

The pairing of the Bosch Cargo motor with the Enviolo Cargo CVT makes for a really strong drivetrain IMO this could be a true car replacement. I test rode a 1st gen Urban Arrow a few years go against a couple other bakfiets box ebikes and even the earlier frame felt solid with less frame flex than the others.

This is probably the best cargo bike Ibhave seen. I might choose a trike for dealing with ice ruts. This certainly has everything its target market needs or wants. Kind of disappointed we are still selling bikes with monochrome displays. I would love to see a review addressing Bosch service problems and proprietary systems. There are a number of great, reliable and torque sensing options available now. Some out perform The Bosch.

I totally agree, you have no idea how much this reliefs stress and gives back precious time. Previous situation: bringing a kid to school 6km hin-und-zuruck twice a day with a car: 15 min door to door x 4, crazy stressy jammed ring road, even longer rides with rain. Need to find time to do sports. Current situation: I go straight through the city center on the bike, I feel more connected to it instead of riding from burb to burb, route is quiet, mostly 30kmh roads or bicycle lanes, and my body is tighter, no need to go to a gym any longer. 1 hour training every day! But guess what, door-to-door is same 15 minutes, also WITH rain!

We changed the front tire with moto X instead of big apple for more confort and stability while driving over tramway rail. We opted for automatic enviolo and second 500 mh. By the way the door of the new rain cover are badly finished : lack of scratch fabric. When there is a bit of wind coming from the side, door get unscratched and leave the rain entering inside. The way they are attached, they hold well in cold weather of winter but in summer the transparent plastic is much smoother and less rigid thus they hang badly down in the face of our kids. The solution is to remove completely the raincover but when weather is uncertain we have to deal with it. New rain cover will be design later on by urban arrow.

Very cool. I can see an issue where, if someone is on the shorter side, they may not be able to see over the rain cover. That's probably not unique to this model though, and could easily be rectified by purchasing a bike with the cargo segment in the rear instead of the front.

I liked this , I just wish the power system was leaning a bit more towards cadence for weak legs, its definitely bias towards torque that's fine to help your battery last longer, but I found it to much for my legs I have vascular disease in my legs, nice bike though.

Hey, you always comment on the ability of the motor to support high cadence (greater than 100 rpm), but the vast majority of e-bike riders I see in the wild are between age 50 and 70, and we care a lot more about low cadence support (that is, 50 to 70 rpm). Can you mention this too? We have two Bosch Gen 2 CX, and find the cadence support below 70 is not too great - we tend to get what feels like surging of the assistance. We also have one bike with a Bosch Gen 4 High Speed motor and it seems to do much better below 70 rpm.

the 380% speed range of the Enviolo allows pretty low cadence. I have to measure, but I think you can do 27km/h manually at 50rpm (I've a EU setup that is capped at 25km/h).

@@lovemadeinjapan It sounds like you are talking about the gearing, which is a different issue than pedal assistance support from the motor. Some e-bikes struggle to provide smooth pedal assistance below 70 rpm (even though the gearing allows pedaling at low cadence). Court is concerned about pedal assist at high rpms, my point is that for many of us, pedal support at a low rpm is the primary concern.

@@tedbellWRV I hardly change gearing, so I can tell it is very easy to get away with support at low RPM. It adds 400% of power to what you offer. Also the CVT gives you much playroom to set the exact balace for your liking. The motor is very much designed for professional cargo transporters that need to get a big load moving.

You won't. Try 2 wheel and you will be proselyted to it immediately. The way it rides is no much smoother, especially roundabouts with separated bicycle lanes can be done full speed.

What transmission model number do you have? The 2021 Cargo version, or an older one? A friend with an orinal 2016 UA with NuVincy transmission needed a replacement last year, which one could say is OK after 5 years, but the new one seems to be improved beyond the original design.

@@lovemadeinjapan I'm hoping so, on my DIY city ebike I'm replacing a Nexus 8 IGH with a new Enviolo Cargo CVT and have read others report it's stronger than the 1st gen Nuvinci hubs, its supposed to take up to 120nm torque which should cope with my BBS01 mid-drive motor and the weight of the trailer-cycle I tow.

@@lovemadeinjapan 2016 UA with NuVinci also. It failed after 1 year under warranty and the replacement failed fall 2020. The problem is getting an replacement. They were not available nowhere. And weeks without a bike is not an option. This is our car...

@@lovemadeinjapan If you follow your argument, a new Nuvinvi every 5 years, you might as well buy a Rohloff which lasts forever with good maintenance. And it a has much better bowden solution, more range, is smaller, sturdier... I'd argue the price it worth it. I will change the oil now for the first time, the fact they offer a nice oil changing kit for customers appeals to me as well. They really thought about proper maintenance. I'm using the tandem version of the Rohloff. It is a bit improved in some minor aspects, and if it is designed for 2 people bikes, it is also great for cargo bikes. Also, Riese and Müller have a reason to put in their top-specked bikes.

Its just hard for me to comprehend the prices on any of these electric bikes. 7k can get you a nice used car in my part of the country. the e bike would only be useful about 4-5 months out of the year. It would be miserable in the snow and rain.

The price is high for sure, but I can see why someone would justify this for themselves or their kids when people easily spend tens of thousands on a fancier brand of car like Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche etc. not everyone can afford it, but this is pretty top of the line for those who can, and it's well done. Money is measurable, but the joy of riding your bike with loved ones could be priceless to some. Whether it’s worth it or not, a dependable ebike will add to your life - fun, fitness, freedom. ebike may not be the answer but it sure doesn’t cost much in insurance, gas, parking, traffic, stress etc.. With greater adoption to active transportation and e-mobility, let’s hope there will be more affordable options and a better world to live in.

I do agree with you but you forget that a car will involve a higher maintainence cost, petrol, parking fees, insurance and also owning a licence. Yes, a car is safer and suited for longer distance commutes and this bike will be amazing in traffic and bike lanes combined, but I think it boils to the general usage of the vehicle and not the price comparison.

With my cargo bike I save 40 bucks on gas alone each week (replacing the previous inner city rides with the car). So that is 2K a year. Door-to-door speed in the city is similar to a car, or better if crappy parking zones are involved, as this can basically be parked in front of any building. Regarding the weather: it is better than you think. This thing drives top speed no matter the wind or rain, totally different than a regular bike, and actual rainfall during rides is pretty low. Became wet once a month in our greyest and wettest January since a long time. Don't do the raincover. Without it is better, also with kids in the rain. It also ages badly, after a year the rain cover will look like a nicotine tent.

What's missing in this particular discussion is the element of a used electric car. 10-year-old used Nissan Leafs can now be had for $10K in the US if you shop around. A 2013 Leaf is very comparable to this bicycle in terms of functionality. No gas/petrol needed, no emissions, low maintenance. At a practical level I feel the Leaf offers more value, but in terms of the "fun/health" factor, you certainly can't beat an ebike.

Il n’est existe aucun velo cargo (carqon, butchers & Bicycles, bullitt, riese & muller, Tern, Babboe, yuba, Douze, Omnium, Lovens, Winther, Radkutsche, Bike43, rad power, Kiffy, Bicicapace, etc…) sur le marché qui possède une ou deux batteries intégrées. Even with a full 225kg load it is on the max speed in a snap of the finger. I can do similar acceleration as most high-end normal e-bikes. Did you ever try it yourself?

Why? Take it this way. I live in a pretty upmarket gentrified ghetto with ASML-high-payment new rich. If I count there are at least 100 Tesla's in the hood, a bunch of ID4s or weird Ford Mustang E-SUV's. All 50k+ cars. Does it kock a dent in a pack of butter? No, you look like navellint with any of those vehicles. I ride a e-Cargo bike, I am faster door-to-door in the city than any of those 50k+ grocery cars, juicy legs, hot pants, tight top. Who pulls the looks? I do. Not those beer-belly-whizkids in them overexpensive shopping carts. So 7k is a steal to steal the show car-wise!

@@thegroove2000 No, you really use it as car replacement. Did you ever ride one? We ditched a car for it. It feels like you own the traphic infrastructure: use both bike and car lanes, park anywhere without paying tickets, no exhaust fumes, leg training, do big hauls at home depot, bring trash to recycling, no traphic jams, same arverage speed as regular cars... It is totally amazing!

That is a bad set of wheels. Weak. The CV hub is a bad design. They are almost giving them away. Guarantee the hub will leak. If spacing is out, 2 millimeters. Been repairing this junk for a long time.

Ridiculous price. One could buy a used Tesla for that price, eat for 2 years or create $14,000 in a few years. 🙈 😜

What does that used Tesla deliver you that this does not?. I'll beat the Tesla in town on A) door to door speed, B) 10 times better fuel efficiency in km/kWh, C) looks of the vehicle, D) status (especially compared to cheap-ass Tesla 3 status), E) can show the dresses I wear while driving, F) better for my health, G) I can use more quiet routes without jams, traffic lights and pollution, H) I can park everywhere for free, I) much cheaper on maintanance, insurance and energy. I have to say the weighing of prices are a bit more positive towards the bicycle here. My Cube Cargo is 5k € with 1kWh battery, the cheapest Tesla, the 3 which you don't want, is 60k € second hand as they are in such high demand that they don't go down much right now. The Tesla you do want, an S, starts at 80k. That is 16 Cube Cargo's here!
