This week I get back on the parts I'm machining for the new work table. But I first started off working on the Victor lathe headstock and tailstock alignment and have some video of that to share. I've also got some new vintage Starrett wall charts I recently had framed up for the shop.

Awesome job on the weight loss! It shows. When you announced at the beginning of the year you were starting your journey, I decided it was time for me to do the same. So far, I'm down a little over 50lbs and still going. Thanks for the inspiration!

If you double indicated front side and back side of your test bar and it showed that indicator movement going the same way you would know it was an alignment issue with the pointing of the bar and not a taper in the part. You might have fixed one problem and created another when you adjusted it. Belive me from doing the HBM it is super easy to do and to chase your tail for days finding the best averages.
@Abom79
@Abom79 6 лет назад
Chasing your tail is exactly what you get into here. It’s easy for people to say this or that and what I did wrong, but when you spend half the day trying to get it right, you settle on what you think is good enough. The bed is leveled to the best I can get it, and I turned that test bar to the specs I give you. I don’t see how the headstock alignment can be out that far once the indicator was going down it. Others may think I’m wrong, but this is one of those cases where everyone has an opinion.
@zedo5851
@zedo5851 4 года назад
Adam the easiest way to dial in the headstock is remove the Chuck get a test bar with the proper taper for the spindle bore about 12 to 18 inches long and mount a dial test indicator to the carriage and sweep it along it and move the head until you get where you like it to be. Do the same to the top of the test bar. It well show you if the ways are worn or not. Checkout Connleys book on rebuilding lots of great information. Cheers Zed

What about skim cutting a thick wall aluminum pipe, sticking out of the chuck, with a sharp high speed steel tool bit which has a positive rake? Aluminum should cut with little tool pressure and the thick wall pipe shouldn't spring much.

Great job Adam, knocking some weight off will make a big difference, I gave up sugar based soft drinks years ago that will help in the weight loss program. ice tea and carbonated water can usually satisfy the liquid refreshments people get accustomed to. When you are young people tend to abuse their health, the older you get you realize you have one body and if you take care of it the better off you are making it to retirement age and beyond.

Hi, Congratulations on your weight loss. You won't regret it. About 14 years ago (age 58) I had a left hip replacement and I was round like a ball. At 5.5 and 235 lbs you could roll me down the sidewalk. My doctor suggested that I lose some (a lot) of weight. I changed my diet and started walking on a daily basis at our local mall. I started out with one mile and over a period of 4 months I worked my way up to 10 miles daily. I lost 40 lbs. in 4 months then I hit a brick wall as far as the weight loss was concerned. I bought a bicycle and started out with one mile a day and worked my way up to 10 miles a day while also walking 10 miles at the mall. In about another month and a half I took an additional 15 lbs off for a total of 55 lbs. My doctor was amazed and pleased. Yep, 10 miles walking and 10 miles riding. After that I felt like a teenager. Ha Ha My doctor told me to grab a 5 lb bag of sugar and take a walk carrying it. You get tired in a hurry. Imagine carrying around 11 each 5 lb bags of sugar all day long. At the start I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. After losing the weight they both improved dramatically and I was able to decrease my medications. I have been able to keep the weight off for these 14 years. At 72 years of age I am now facing surgery for a new right hip replacement. Can't wait to get it done so I can get back to my retirement fun. i.e. fishing and machining. You and your body will be glad you made the choice to lose some weight. John

You got that wrong about moving half the measured error to get the tailstock true. The half rule applies when your movement is going to be doubled by cutting both sides, as in a turning tool cutting all the way around a part. Since you just need two things to align, and one is behind the other by X, you move it up X until they align. This is moving, not cutting. Your clue was that after making the adjustment half the distance of the error, you were only half way there.

Great stuff Adam love the wall art she did a nice job with the framing and glad to see you are putting them out and not locked away in some closet I have some of dad's old decimal charts from when he was building motors for hot rods he built over the years he did tile and marble for the eight to five deal and turned wrenches nights and weekends which is how I got my start at a very young age turning wrenches and taking that to a whole new level beyond what he ever figured from fine furniture in the mid eighties to my current machining abilities and the love of building things

I feel I need to add to this. Behind the tailstock where the gears are, there are two more 10mm bolts that needs loosening if you are running out of range of adjustment and needs to pivot the headstock the other way. One is behind the "banjo", the other is behind the main V belts.

I have been noticing as others have that you are not the same Adam that you were! But that is a GOOD thing. I found out I have type 2 diabeties about ten years ago. I changed my diet and eating habits and lost 40 pounds in about two months. No real diet just changed the way and foods I was eating. Have managed to keep most of it off. I backslide once in a while but get right back to it. Love the charts. My old workplace had them too but it is all gone now. Great simple video of the alignment. I will try it on my old import. It is a train wreck. Till next time......

Wall charts...pretty nice framing !! Back in the 1970's I worked at Burgmaster Machine Tool Company in Gardena, Calif....I sure wish I'd kept some of their literature, they were right up there with Cincinnati Milacron in Quality of Turret machines. All I can find now is the tiny little bench models like Tom Lipton has...

I have a Starrett that you may have never seen. I buy, sell, trade and collect tools both modern and antique. I go to the Habitat Restore a least once a day and buy tools. A few months ago I picked up a Starrett ratchet with a Jan.11 1916 patd. date. It is a model 443. It has a female 5/8 drive and it use stamped steel sockets. It has a knurled rod at the bottom that you pull and twist to turn direction of the ratchet. I once found a Starrett tool for clamping two 12 inch steel rulers together after stepping on it several times while looking at other tools. The Habitat Restore by me has a fresh supply of tools almost every day and cheap prices.

Another good reason to use a quality framer is that they use non acidic mat paper between the poster and the glass. Glass is always flowing and will eventually flow into paper fibers. It may take 50 -100 years but it will happen.
