Watching this video made it clear to me why God takes marriage so seriously as a symbolic representation of Christ and His love for His bride, the Church. This kind of love, consideration, humility, and maturity is so necessary in the body of Christ and the world. The way you two communicate the gospel is just plain OILY 🙌🏼🥴 To have the gospel message bleed through in even as difficult a conversation as the systematic oppression of black people in America is nothing short of God-breathed. And to think, you wondered if people would actually want to watch you guys just do life and have couch conversations?! This is more powerful than you thought. And that was always God’s intent.
Thank you for your grace and patience with people like me who have been slow to come around. I've come to feel a sense of responsibility for speaking to my white, middle class, conservative culture about racism, to encourage us all to come to this subject with genuine humility and the desire to learn. It isn't proving easy, and I have to prayerfully fight back a growing sense of bitterness towards my own community. It recently occurred to me that my black brothers and sisters have already set a profound example for longsuffering patience (like I said, I'm slow). If I'm already frustrated with my own community, I can only imagine how frustrating it's been for your culture in dealing with mine! And yet you still hold out grace and love. So listening to you doesn't just teach me about your racial experiences; it teaches me about durable faithfulness and grace for all. Thank you.
Can I ask what are the top questions you offer up to (white) people in your community when talking about racial injustice? Our church recently did a kind of Zoom workshop. Called ‘renewing my mind’ but content wise it was beginners Guide to racism for people in our (predominantly white) church
I'll never forget in high school, I learned the power of the media and images as it relates to black people. We had a foreign exchange student who was from Norway. On his last day, we gave him a going away party and when he came up to talk to the class, he said one of the biggest thing he learned is that black people aren't dangerous. He said when he came here, he literally thought all black people had weapons on them (which is not illegal, but another discussion) and were in gangs because of what he saw in movies and TV, He thought he could be beat up or killed. He said going to our school and making black friends changed his point of view.
I would argue that a lot of people need to gain a true world view by traveling the world and not a world view through media. I have heard your story before. The image of the violent black man is deeply embedded in literature and movies. And that image is broadcasted around the world. It truly is a demonic agenda. For we wrestle not with flesh and blood but against darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places.

Love was discussed in the video, but what was not discussed was the biblical definition of love within the context of the verse that was quoted. I Corinthians 13 (NLT), starting in verse 4 reads "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance." Yes we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves as stated in Mark 12:31, but what was not acknowledged is the fact that the verse preceding this verse that was quoted tells us the most important thing we are to do which is "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30, NIV). Just as it is humanly impossible to do this, it is humanly impossible to do the 2nd thing that he commands, loving our neighbor. So the solutions that you are seeking cannot be resolved by man, only God can fix it and we have to rely on the Holy Spirit to enable us to do these things. Therefore protesting, though it may look good to be standing arm in arm with people from all nations, it in and of itself is not the catalyst to the change that we desire to see. Every battle that Jesus ever fought he fought it first in the spirit realm and obtained victory there. Only after He was equipped spiritually, did he then go out and do what the Father commanded of Him to do naturally. That's why He had the successes that He had in the natural realm. He didn't even begin His ministry until after fasting, which is a major component of prayer according to Matthew 17:21, and one that many Christians neglect in this day and age we are living in. Fasting is not just denying ones self of food, the Bible clearly defined what it is in Isaiah 58:6-11. The real battle that we need to be fighting is on our knees, in our prayers closets, and not on the streets. Matthew 6:14-15 (NLT) says, “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins." In the verses before that we see Jesus illustrating how to pray and he included praying for ones enemies. The Bible also tells us in Deuteronomy 32:35 and Romans 12:17-19 that vengeance belongs to God and that He will repay. If we seek out our own vengeance it negates God's vengeance, and I would much rather have God's vengeance than my own in any situation. Demanding change directly from white people is a form of seeking out your own vengeance. Likewise, if we're really living a life of faith we shouldn't even identify any longer with our skin color. We are made of three parts spirit, soul, and body. Our physical bodies are our Earth suits, it's not the real us anyway, it's what makes us legally able to function on the Earth. When we die we are leaving these physical bodies behind. So when we get saved we should see ourselves as who we really are new creations (II Corinthians 5:17). Sure we can empathize with other human beings but we shouldn't dwell on skin color because that causes us to dwell on the flesh and we are not to walk in the flesh but in the spirit (Galatians 5:16, 25).
Question. How do we respond to racism in the church and amongst bible believing Christians? Also. Who you are, your skin, your hair, your gender, the family you come from are all chosen for you specifically from God. Thats your image. It is not everything but it matters. Your image is meant to glorify God and when that image is hated, its a problem. Yes we shouldnt dwell in our skin colour and it shouldnt be what defines us...and strangely enough thats what white supremacy and racism is, its being so invested in your likeness that you write off whole groups and nations of people.

@@FI-xc1ug I already answered your question in my original statement. It doesn't matter where the racism comes from, the same approach is to be applied. The question you should be asking is do you ever see Jesus in the Bible dwelling on the physical attributes that you listed?...The answer is No. He's the example we should be following not a christian celebrity, pastor, or anyone else who may think more highly of themselves than they ought to. The only image that glorifies God is how much are you reflecting His Son Jesus. Because Jesus is the only one who perfectly reflects the Father.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Christ is the only solution...letting His heart replace ours so that we can see ourselves and others as He does. No doubt about that. What I am trying to get across though is that in our praying, we cannot be complacent. Racism in the church can hinder the work of God, it van cause believers to be discouraged, it can leave an open door for the enemy to sow seeds or uproot those that God is planting, eg. Muhatma Gandhi was repelled from Christianity because of how he was treated in a church in SA during apartheid. Ghandi could have become a Christian and then have taken that new found faith with him to India, but because of a church failing to rep Christ properly, a man didn't get saved. Our responsibility as Gods people is to reflect him properly in the earth and that I think will require more than prayer, preaching, talking....but it also require us to actively make an effort to live and be right. Many do not see racism as sin so they don't even think about it, in the way they would think about fornication, adultery, envy or murder. If I have hate in my heart but never think about it or recognize it as a problem, then how can I possibly bring it to God in prayer? Yes Jesus is our example and that's who we need to emulate, but because we are human, we need to daily work through the sin in hearts in order to lay it at his feet...yes we will never be perfect but God promises to help us so that we can be transformed. Transformation is not automatic, daily we need to actively work at it. We don't just pray to stop sinning, we also do the work required to counter that sin. Racism is a form of hate...so the church can't ignore it....laws or organisations can't solve this...we need the word of God to work on all our hearts. All believers. The fact that there are churches where certain people are not welcome is proof of the work that the 'church' still needs to be doing. Yes as humans we will fall short but we cannot be complacent.
Hey Jackie Hill Perry and Preston, I think it would be so amazing if you did a bible study on justice, righteousness and love. I just lead one with my young adults group. And the whole book of Amos is about the universal justice of God. Habakkuk also speaks on this. A lot of things that Israel was accused of are the same things we are dealing with today! And you are very right about love. "God does not want religious behaviour from his people; he wants their total devotion as shown in the ethical character of their lives. Religious ritual in the absence of just and righteous treatment of others is disgusting to God." Amos 5:21-24 says "I hate, I despise your feats and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.. "Isaiah 1: 11-17 (vs 14) "your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them..(vs 17) "cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fathers, plead the widow's cause" an Matthew 23:23 also speaks on this. Thank you for this video. You have echoed my every thought (esp. the effect of all this on the gospel).

Ok...first of all, I love the Perrys. I love their deep, deep wisdom and willingness to be vulnerable. You two are some of my favorite Christian leaders. I look up to you both so much. Just wanted to throw something out there and would really like feedback on because I am SO BEWILDERED as to how to respond to all that is going on as a white woman. I want to be humble, supportive, willing to learn, willing to change. But honestly I am TERRIFIED of having any sort of conversation with my black friends about the topics that the Perrys have raised. I am so afraid of asking a question the wrong way, saying something the wrong way. But I feel like in order for these deep problems to be solved we have to have conversations and communicate. Just like in a marriage. Conversations are so important in trying to resolve conflict and hurt. And if you're afraid to have the conversation, you probably will never get anywhere. The problem is that I have seen people get labeled as racist who make honest mistakes. Just trying to ask questions (which is normally how you respond to someone who is hurting) is completely taboo now., I have been rebuked and have seen other people harshly rebuked for just asking questions. Trying to learn and understand. We white people are ignorant. That's the long and short of a large part of the problem in the church. We don't understand the lives of POC, don't know what they face, don't know what things we say are uncomfortable for them. But when we try to understand and ask questions - we are slammed and dismissed. Because of our ignorance, we are harshly judged. I don't say this in an "oh poor me" way, but to explain why a lot of us are absolutely TERRIFIED to have conversations. How else are we going to learn? How are we going to solve the problem of ignorance? Say you have a husband in a marriage who is making dumb mistakes...hurting his wife out of ignorance. Do you think that their marriage is going to get better if the wife slams him every time he tries to ask why she's hurt or disappointed in him. He's probably going to stop trying after awhile. Can we please be able to have conversations? Can we allow each other grace to make mistakes? Can we not jump on those who are honestly trying and make a mistake based out of ignorance or even small seeds of racism that they are unaware of? GRACE is what we need to offer to one another. Only when that is extended freely will we ever get anywhere with this mountain of a problem. Trust me, most every white Christian I know is listening very closely. We deeply want to change and do better. We hate that black people have suffered so. We want to repent of any wrongs that we have done. We want to CHANGE. We love our black sisters and brothers. You all have something very special about you as a group. You have power and communication abilities that command attention. Maybe it is from a deep history of suffering. It has created an uncommon depth within you. You are beautiful, amazing, wise. We long to listen and to learn. Your contribution to the American church is inestimable. Please let us learn how to honor and love you better.
The first step is not to make assumption. Forget about every cliche you probably heard about black people and be on your own quest to learn and be intentional. Nobody want people to feel sorry for them, but they want people to treat them like they are human too. I use to work in a hospital lab, I didn’t know the manager was Christian till it was Xmas time when she brought brochure about the Xmas eve service. I am from the Caraibean Island, I have witnessed the transformation of behavior when someone accepts Chris, you can literally see the change. I didn’t see the fruit of the spirit in that lady. And be sure you ask the question to someone you know, so they know that you are after knowledge not condemnation.

I don't think telling you to get better black friends will help you at all. But I think maybe before launching into the conversation state what you state in your comment. I as a black person could be on guard when approached by a white person but if we were to both humble ourselves initially I think more would be achieved .
If you are humble enough to let go of your preconceptions you will learn. Listen to reflect and not to respond. When learning about racism you are not there for a debate but to listen. If you get defensive you will not learn at all! And your black friend or POC will not be so willing to educate you. Another alternative will be to educate yourself. There are a ton of resources available online.
I am sick to my stomach that you guys basically have judged that I fall into your stereotype. I've been in situations where I am the person defending 'George Floyd', as a white 62 year old woman I was in a situation where a black man was being accused and picked on not by police, but by a bunch of big white guys. My friends all split, and I freaked out at the white guys, just freaked out. I'm sure they had a gun among them. I just freaked out and said he didn't do anything wrong. They left him be. I am proud of that night backnin the 70s. The black gentleman left as quickly as the white guys did. My courage came from God. I hope I see that man in heaven someday!!

First of all I love this conversation I think it was well-spoken and well thought out. It's refreshing to me because I've been seeing a lot of African AmericanChristians who when they speak about this issue disregard the race aspect and only look at the sin itself. is looking at that everyone is looking at the act so to hear another African American Christian speak about this bring Bible references explain the story and history for people to understand is a beautiful thing.

My sister, show us love like you show everyone else love. The most supportive thing you can do is educate yourself about racism in this country so you're not making you black loved ones do the emotional labor of educating you.

I know from personal experience that the only thing that changes your heart is the gospel, when you hear it, believe and obey. You can change a policy but without changing the hearts and minds people who implement it.. it is ineffective and often will complicate the abuses further. God bless you Jackie and Preston. So I agreed with a lot of what you said but I do have a question. As black people how long do we allow ourselves to look at history and blame racism for the violence that continues in our neighborhoods? Admitting the original sin of slavery is important yes... but I fear that we blame our continued negative behavior on slavery and that it can be a cop-out for self responsibility.

Thanks for this convo. We can’t forget the long list of Black women who have also been murdered by police brutality: Breonna Taylor, Tanisha Anderson, Atatiana Jefferson, Sandra Bland, and so many others. Black women’s bodies also mean nothing to them. I sooo agree that some are more patriotic than they are Christian. They idolize America, the flag, and capitalism. I have become very frustrated by the church’s silence (for the most part) when it comes to racial injustice. Love your neighbor. Love and show compassion like the Good Samaritan. I was explaining to someone earlier that they only seem to care about unborn Black people. It’s easy to love someone you can’t see. They don’t care at all once that Black baby leaves the womb, and whether or not that baby will have access to healthcare, food, shelter, quality education, job opportunities, access to wealth, or safety from harm if they ever interact with police. How are you more irate about someone looting than people being murdered with impunity? Every time you mention race, they dismiss it by saying people need the gospel. Of course they do! But what does it look like to love in deed and truth? I’m with Jackie: show me your fruit. Show me your faith by your works. I wanna see the receipts! Believers in Imago Dei and a righteous God should make the loudest outcry against racial injustice, but you hardly hear a word. As a Black Christian, it makes me feel unloved by many people who call themselves Christians.
This was amazingly edifying, so grateful for the insight and the teaching you two! Admitting my implicit-bias is harder than I thought but God is working in these places in so many of His childrens' hearts right now. Praying for growth here in myself and other white Christians!
Coming across a white Christian who gets it always gives me hope (I’m Asian) but I know how hard and frustrating it is to help change and awakening happen in a majority white church. A small group of us started a ministry called Mercy & Justice. Are you part of a majority white church that has something like this?

As far as I’m aware we don’t have a ministry set up specifically for this issue, however our heart is for church planting and so the way we work on this is being able to help raise up churches in other communities that serve their communities in intimate and practical ways. Do you have any suggestions based on what you guys are doing through your ministry?

She speaks about church communities having mutuality - the understanding that we learn from each other no matter our different economic circumstances or race or culture. You guys are doing something really special here. Thank you for your trying to educate from a black Cristian perspective. I am so sorry that so many of us white people can't see what it is like growing up black in America. I was so blind for so long. Because as a small town, member of the midwest, and a also a Christian from the middle of no where, white girl, I really did think we were all pretty equal, and things were pretty good. Because of my Christian denomination, I have always read doctrines like, "All men are alike into God", "Let all men come into Christ, both black and white, bond and free, both male and female." Because I have always thought here we all have pretty great lives- the Native Americans here , and the white people. And due to never seeing what some black communities actually go through in person, OR even on the internet, I believed the political non sense I heard, that it was all by the Democrats to win the election. And of course all the lies going around about political stuff was more confusing. But hearing a black Christian perspective, along with many other things I have researched, and the me to since,... I have come to the knowledge and understanding that these things ARE happening to many people. And now I can look at it as a Christian, recognizing God loves all His children and He is trying to help them through those with voices. So now I am ready to help, and I want to do whatever I can and that starts with talking to others, and reaching out in the love of Christ, to help them see the reality of the truth. That just because you never see it doesn't mean there are not places it is happening. More so in larger cities.l, and the Eastern side of the United States.

I'm glad you all are having this conversation. I would like to also say that Christians in this country are all looking at our Christianity through different lenses. There are many different denominations and even within those denominations there are local/ regional cultural differences that will frame how we understand our faith and each other. Please let's always take a step back and ask God to help us understand why another Christian might see something differently, rather than just saying that they are not showing love. We all have different ways of showing love. Maybe what they are showing you doesn't feel like love because you can't see it through their lense. I'm black too and I felt similarly a few years ago when I heard people respond to the phrase BLM with ALM. But now, I really feel like the Lord has shown me another perspective; another lense if you will. Let's continue to wrestle with loving each other through these rough times. Love you guys. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good (Titus 1:16) This scripture really points to what you are talking about here. Imagine how much we have been desensitized to watch a man slowly die. The literal grief that people experienced from watching a stranger lose his life. I refuse to watch the video. The description was enough for me. I pray through this tragedy, real tangible change comes.
honestly I just pray that as a young white Christian woman (16), I have always had this passion for unity and wanting to learn about racism and how to go about talking about it even though I'm not black myself. I'm afraid of seeming like I know what it's like to be a POC and seem like I understand their experience when I really will never fully understand what that feels like. I just want so badly to learn and speak on it in a way that glorifies God and His will for unifying the body of Christ and deconstructing those systemically racist habits around me that I may not be completely aware of. I'm here to listen and here to learn and I feel so blessed to be able to witness such key points and conversation between such an incredible couple. you guys are amazing and I hope to learn and have a repenting heart towards God and I pray to love the absolute best way I can in exemplifying Christ and educating myself. thank you for the privilege of having such a real perspective on this. love your guys' honesty and biblically sound advice.
I’m a white Christian. This has helped me see just a little bit the black perspective in this country. Thank you for that. I agree that the answer for the Christian is true repentance, as we should do for all our sins, and then also Christians being bold and preaching the gospel. Its pursuing our father in faith, and having our hearts changed by the Holy Spirit. Loving our Neighbor. Its so simple. Jesus is the answer. This country desperately needs bold Christians who are not afraid to have open and raw conversation. The era of cowardly Christianity needs to end. The gospel is conflicting and provoking. We should not be afraid to have real and raw conversation with anyone we meet. Amen.

I have two black grandsons- ages 3 and 4, and I pray for them all the time that they don't die a premature death at the hands of racist cops. Lord, help us.

You guys are so woke and so godly. If you guys can do this in the US, then I can allow God to do this in me in the UK. Everytime I start to feel overwhelmed, I remember there are christians going through it in the US who have been for some time and so I am not alone. Not to compare experiences but to know that it is possible to let God work in me in this area. Many in the UK are waking up to racism here like never before right now and I am seeing how some people really aren't christians as there is no love for the brothers and sisters. I asked myself yesterday, 'is my hope in church, leadership or in truly Jesus?' It is disorientating but even in the storm, I must fix my eyes on Jesus.

I unfortunately have to lovingly take everything my white church leaders do with a pinch of salt cos it’s likely they have blind spots in how to best teach or respond to something like Black Lives Matter (they know enough to pass the mic to a brown skinned person though)
