Dwayne didn't need more motivation. He needed love. That's why they sent Olive.

Honestly, I think Olive's dance was less obscene than the rest of the pageant goers. It could almost be seen as a parody; it's a commentary on the oversexualization of child beauty pageants.

The guy in the audience wasn’t written as a pervert. He is credited as “biker dad.” He’s just been to too many pageants. Everyone thinks he is a pervert. Someone also pointed out that at the end when they are told they can never enter a pageant in California, Frank says “We can live with that.” ❤️

Thank you for this! I NEVER took his character as trying to creep on kids, he literally looked like he didn't want to be there at all. If he was interested, he most likely would have been more excited to be there. So when I started to see people saying that about his character, I was so freaking confused. I thought he was maybe the dad of a different contestant, and she wanted to be in pageants when he didn't want her to be. But he took her anyway to make her happy, and he sat in the audience to show his support even though he was bored. Because maybe the other parent, unless he was a single dad, couldn't go. And he just didn't want to admit that his child was there. Or he was just bored and had nothing better to do. He was waiting for something or someone and sat there while he waited. That's how I took it anyway.

Yeah, my take on it was that the biker dad looked miserable and seemed disapproving of the whole thing, but was still going to be a good dad by showing up to support his kid even though he didn't want to be there. It's actually pretty sad that so many people don't pay any attention to his body language and how he's acting, and instead seem to make assumptions based solely on how he looks. Just because he's not a clean cut preppy guy doesn't automatically mean he's some random perv 😬 Sidenote: There'd be a good chance that besides going to the pageants to be supportive, he'd also be going to make sure no creeps are perving on his daughter. "Biker Dad the Self-appointed Child Beauty Pageant Bouncer" is something that is totally plausible.

Loved your commentary. I think Olive's grandpa really wanted to hold a mirror to the grossness/hypocrisy of child pageants with her routine, and the Rick James' song (who knows his response in the audience if he were there), while also being supportive of her dream. I think you're spot on about the reaction of the crowd: it was a mix of not understanding their own weird motivations for being there, and their confusion at a child actually having fun at the event.

Just a quick comment about dealing with depression: The best thing to do for people who are depressed is, first, don't force them to talk about it. Be available to listen, to answer questions, but let them take the lead; let them find their own way at their own pace. The second thing to do is don't make things easy for them. Don't excuse them from effort, especially physical effort. Nothing gets you out of going in circles in your head like having real world stuff to do. Don't make it hard, but don't make it easy either. Give them ordinary tasks, like laundry or dishwashing or gardening. It distracts, balances, and anchors. I had a friend who was lost in depression and I moved in with him and my baby boy. He kept going around and around in his head, so I took him roller skating. Big 40-some year old hefty guy, hadn't been on skates in decades. I put him on skates at a roller rink, left him to figure it out for himself while I skated around the rink. He was left working out physically how not to fall. That was a turning point for him, having that physical challenge interrupt the emotional cyclone he'd been in. The same for the guy in the film; working together doing something physical, like pushing the minibus or moving the corpse, breaks the circular thinking. He was distracted in just the right way to get his bearings again. Love watching you watch, hearing you interpret and react. Such a gentle way about you. Thanks, Will.

This was my 1st ever Paul Dano film and his scenes in this film are my favorite, especially the vision test scene. It gave me chills and made me cry. After this film he joined my top 5 actors of all time, I go and look for films with him in them. Like Prisoners which I HIGHLY recommend if you all haven't seen it yet. Or the films he directed/ Produced Wildlife and For Ellen.

I like how the film critiques child pageants. Specifically how it points out that those pageants have no problem sexualizing children for the most part but draw this imaginary line all of a sudden when Olive dances to superfreak. As if spray tanning children, putting them in skimpy swimsuits and making them perform on stage isn't extremely sus already.

One of my favourite movies!! It's so great and life-affirming even while being conscious of how shitty everything often is Some other faves I think you'd enjoy if you haven't seen them already: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Richard Linklater's Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight), and Pleasantville
@butters796
@butters796 Год назад
On the pageant: it's that she isn't performing femininity the "right" way, and also a way to highlight how hypocritical the child beauty pageants are. Olive was dressed in a comfortable swimsuit and was frowned upon because others were wearing two piece bikinis. Olive is dressed more childlike until the talent section. And all the talents are like gymnastics and things to impress the judges, but Olive's is just having fun. So while the other contests were clearly sexualized, it was in an industry approved way where they could claim it's about pomp and ceremony. Yet they take offense to Olive willingly doing a "sexy" dance because how dare this child act out so sexually, even though it's clear Olive is naive and just thinks it's fun. Miss California is the exception because she sees Olive is just having fun and is charmed by her.

Yes we love our paper plates , I freaking love paper plates it’s when you are too lazy to wash dishes😂This movie is great 🥺 even my 60 year old mother loved this & she’s picky with films ! She wants to see this movie again haha. I think this movie has something for everyone. Considering the fact that the cast has different ages. We got grandma, parents, teen, and child. It’s dark humor! Thanks for reacting to this 😌

i liked how you said that white was a representation of purity in franks character. personally, and sort of adding to that i guess, i think it represented new start for him. just experiencing something like attempted suicide, and then being able to start over with his sister and her family. the way they developed his character throughout the movie was really brilliant. especially the scene towards the end when they arrive at the pageant-- i love that frank is the one run inside first, i think it shows his development really well.

I really appreciated your commentary.I love this movie so much. The whole cast is awesome, Olive is from the movie Signs. Paul Dano is my favorite actor, he's his generations best actor, simply awesome..I'm really glad that you enjoyed the movie, you seemed to get the gist of it. The movie won an Oscar for best screenplay and I believe all the actors won an award for best cast. I look forward to watching more of your reviews. I especially liked how you got a bit teary eyed at times. You were a joy to watch.

paper plates are usually not used as everyday dinnerware in the US-it depends on a lot of factors but i think they're showing them using it in the film as 1. a way to show how often they eat out instead of healthy homecooked food and 2. how dysfunctional they are. do they use disposable dishes because no one will do the dishes or do they even have dishes? is no one doing the dishes because they're angry, or sad, or unorganized, or not communicating?

when olive dances at beauty pagen it is a hidden but obvious message actually. if you look all those girls in a movie perfeorming before her, thaz actualy mild comparing to pageons where even toddler girls perform. it is sexualisation of children, pre puberty girls, even toddlers wear havy make up, have their hair done, they look like adult women, and olive actually did not do anything but had a dance, provocative dance done by strippers, so in movie it is actually showen what the show is about. feast for all sycos, making kids be legaly sexualised...

Man, I love this film. It feels akin to Wes Anderson films, drawing inspiration from the dysfunctional family, and poking fun at heavy topics. Everything I love about wholesome comedies!

If you wanna look at another roadmovie, the Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, is also great!!!! Personally, I don't think her dance was sexual at all, it was a kid having fun on some questionable music that she doesn't understand anyway. I think the other acts are all far more sexual, because adults have choreographed them, not the children

Most Americans would just use paper plates for an outdoor barbeque, or a party situation where you have more guests than china. The fact that they're using them for regular family meals suggests something there. There's a certain amount of "giving up" that's already been going on. Arizona and California are both in the same Southwestern *region* of the United States, so figure a few hundred miles aka. two to three days. I think the pageant's problem with Olive's routine was that she turned the entire "sexualization of kids" thing on its head, with a child bopping around and having fun to Rick James' "Super Freak." Instead of what they usually do, where it's all subtextual. She basically exposed the whole system.
