Hey All! This is a movie pick by my girlfriend Anna. I honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy this one, but I absolutely did. I haven't laughed this hard in a reaction EVER. Also this was one of the hardest laughs I've ever had in my life!

And no, the guy is not a weirdo, just a dad who's been to waaaaaay to many beauty pagents for his kid. So he plugs out.

Exactly. Side question: when he jumps up and yells at the end was that because 1) he was listening to a ball game and his team just scored, 2) he was responding to the show, ecstatic to have seen something different for once, or... 3) ....[any other ideas?]

To clarify the man at the pageant is not a weirdo, he would rather be anywhere but at the pageant, which is why he has earplugs so he doesn't have to listen to it. And why he applauds Olive's family's routine because it's the 1st actually interesting thing that has happened at a pageant he's been forced to go to. He's posed as a punk rocker who's annoyed he has to be there, but he most likely has a daughter in the pageant he's supporting regardless. Either the mother wasn't able to take the daughter so he had to or the mother is working as a crew member to the pageant, so he's forced to sit in the audience and watch. Like Olive's family, he understands that his daughter wants to do it so he is supporting even though he doesn't want to be there. He looked at Richard and knew that it was his first time at a pageant because he didn't bring any earplugs or anything to keep himself busy because the entire rest of the crowd were mothers and daughters, not grown men like himself and Richard. The film's main point regarding the dance part is that everyone in the pageants is okay with dressing their children up as adults. Spray tans, make-up, bikinis, etc. and making their own children grow up too fast. But then, when Olive dances like an adult, suddenly it's not an okay thing to do. It's about boundaries and how different family's have different comfort zones. This is my comfort movie, and don't worry Anna I cried on the Dwayne part too. This was my 1st ever Paul Dano film and he instantly became my top 5 actors, his scenes were some of my favorites, especially the scene on the pier. Each character in this film had to be broken down in order to build the entire family into a more supportive unit. Each person was focused on their main niche as you mentioned with some exceptions. The grandpa with his medicinal use. Richard with his 9-steps winners vs. losers speeches. Sheryl was the exception she was working hard to provide for the family as a whole while Richard chased his dreams, her main vice was smoking and lying about that aspect of her life. Frank with the attempt to end his life. Dwayne with his dedication to becoming a pilot. And then there was Olive with her love of pageantry. Each family member's dreams and aspirations that they were chasing had to fall for them to realize that the rest of the family would still support them regardless. No matter what they were doing they all realized through Olive what they should be focusing on instead of thinking that they were alone with their endeavors. Sorry, for all the writing I can analyze this movie all day long honestly. I love it so much that I watch it all the time. Typically when I'm upset or sometimes I literally will just watch it or reactions to it as I fall asleep. It tears the audience down and builds us back up with each of the characters ' journeys; it's definitely a favorite of mine!!

@@mikewatchesstuff Very understandable, I've literally only ever found 3 or 4 other people who knew he wasn't a creep. Literally, every reviewer and reactor always thinks he's a creep. Pageants make people very guarded, understandably. I personally can't stand them and would love if they reframed them to be less adult in nature and more age-appropriate. Don't judge them on their looks at all. They could make it more like a talent show with like an educational questionnaire or something. Just have trivia, talent, and they can ask questions on contestants' goals or something. America's Got Talent meets Who Wants to be a Millionaire. And they can include a philanthropy section where they volunteer. Teach them life skills instead of airbrushing, and bikinis. I'm a huge film nerd and took film analysis in college because of how much I love films. I also took psychology so I always try to read between the lines. Analyze body language and context clues etc. I know I'm in the minority on that though XD I'm such a nerd one of my dreams is to own my own movie theater as well as create film shorts and do the special effects makeup for them lol If you've ever seen the film All About Evil with Natasha Lyonne, that's my dream in a nutshell. With the exception of the murdering that takes place in the film XD It's a fantastically campy b-horror film which are some of my favorites. Horror films and indie films are my ultimate. And indie horror films are the cherry on top hehe

Yeah! Turn it into a talent contest and that would be so much more wholesome and appropriate! But alas, this is America. I'm glad at least one person who watches these vids is into horror because that's my favorite genre and the majority of the reactions I've done (I got a lot of horror reactions done and just-a waiting for me to edit them!) There's gonna be a lot of horror coming! And there's a lot on my main channel too, which I didn't know you already knew about lol. And any analysis you want to share, I'd be happy to hear it in any comments!

@@mikewatchesstuff I would definitely be like Olive's family and not want my kid to enter. But if they wanted to, I wouldn't stop them and I'd support them. But heck no they would not be wearing all those layers of makeup lol If I have children I'm hoping they are tomboys like me growing up and they get into skateboarding and martial arts like I was XD Heck yes!! I will be watching all the horror ones that I can. I only watch reactions of stuff I've watched because spoilers are the bane of my existence lol But I will eventually watch everything once I see it myself. All things horror I will definitely watch. You mentioned Human Centipede lol and I can actually watch that one as well, each one gets worse and I need to finish the 3rd one XD I remember watching your other channel previously, and I thought I subscribed. Either YT deleted my sub which they've done with other channels. Or I accidentally forgot to but I resubbed to it today!

Thanks for sharing your reaction 😊 I think the Grandpa had the point of the movie in two scenes... when he 'comforts' Richard in the van... "You tried to do something... and I'm proud of you" and with Olive in the hotel, "A real loser is someone who doesn't try". Or maybe it was just not to feed your family chicken every night 😂

I think the ending is a metaphor for the uncertainty in life itself. We're not supposed to know what's next for the Hoover family. Do Richard and Sheryl stay together? Does Frank attempt suicide again? Does Dwayne ever fly? And how much therapy will Olive need after growing up in that family? It's all uncertain because that's how life is.

It is a lot easier to push start and old vehicle in a higher gear. When you pop the clutch -you will have less compression from the engine. Once started, you can smash the clutch again and go to the lower gears until you turn off the engine. One thing is true though, most cars can't stop start or idle if the clutch is wrecked.

The son was not speaking because his parents wouldn’t LET him join the Air Force- it was his way of rebelling. Would that be allowed in my family? Thank god I will NEVER have to find out, I will support any decision that my kids make.

7:44 "You be speakin'. I'll make 'im join choir." Yeah, we all know the best way to get a kid to do something is to have an authority figure attempt to force the child to do something it's impossible to force someone to do. Just like kids who go vegetarian when their parents would prefer they didn't or kids who pick up a hobby, interest, or friend group the parents dislike, it goes away if you let it run its course. The best way to make a phase last as long as possible is to vocally disapprove of it as a parent.

The biker guy was not a pervert. He was very obviously just a disinterested father whose wife has dragged him to countless pageants already trying to relive her childhood through her daughter. And you can easily figure this out by his reaction to Richard and by the plugs he puts in his ears rather than answering him. Richard to him is just a father who has not yet experienced one of these awful pageants whereas he has seen way too many. As to the pushing the bus to start it in 3rd gear this is not a hollywood invention. People who grew up driving stick shifts are very familiar with it. And the movie IS a hidden gem. whose focus is on how one dysfunctional family became functional in the end by pulling together for the sake of the one person in the family who had no defects. And each grew a little in the process (with the exception of Grandpa, of course). And the dance at the end was a priceless and well-deserved mockery of all child beauty pageants. And finally I probably agree that SISTER ACT 2 is better than SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. But I am not saying that because I like SISTER ACT 2 so much. It's because I hate SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and specifically because of the message Spielberg was trying to convey in the movie. As opposed to the wonderful message of HACKSAW RIDGE, Spielberg proposed that compromising your integrity to the point even of commiting murder is acceptable and laudable in times of war. As to SISTER ACT, the original was OK but I don't know that I've ever seen the sequel. Somehow I doubt however if its underlying theme is as heinous as Spielberg's.

If you like Paul Dano, you really must see him in the movie about the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, “Love and Mercy” (2014). Toni Colette I first saw in a long ago movie called “Muriel’s Wedding”. It’s a quirky Australian comedy classic. Definitely worth watching. And, an earlier film with Abigail Breslin is “Signs” by M Night Shyamalan. She’s so darn good and cute in that one. 😊

Hi Jackie, you had us second-guessing ourselves, so we had to double check. The glitch we're referring to is them eating Dinah's fried chicken. This goof is even listed on the movie's IMDB page. While we did confuse them being in Arizona, rather than New Mexico, Dinah's chicken is in fact only in Southern California, not in Albequerque, NM (we showed a few seconds of ourselves looking up Dinah's chicken at the 11:07 mark).
