The world seems a little less bright since Jimmy's been gone. Thanks for this one, guys. ✌️❤️ You know, Jimmy was gonna go the outlaw country route. But a summer in the keys changed that and gave us the Jimmy Buffet sound that we know and love!
Such a talent! So many great songs: A Pirate Looks at 40, The Captain and the Kid, Changes in Latitude, Margaritaville, Havana Daydreamin' and many many more.
This is his first big hit after years of trying to make it. ❤ “During an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on March 23, 1983, Buffett revealed that “Come Monday” saved him from a deep depressive episode. “This is ‘Come Monday,'” said Buffett. “It is a song that kept me from killing myself in the Howard Johnson’s in Marin County [California]. Well, it hit, and I paid the rent, got my dog out of the pound, and I was deathly depressed, too.” He continued “I was in a Howard Johnson’s under Mount Tamalpais in Marin County and living there, playing in San Anselmo. It was awful, and I wrote this song, and it hit, and the rest is history.”
It could be said that "Come Monday" gave the world a billion dollar Margaritaville empire. The paths that some of these rock stars took to success is sometimes purely miraculous.
It captures that feeling we have when we miss a loved one so well. Glad it was a huge hit for him. Keep hoping someday my boat will come in. Still waiting.
The title of the album is also from his near suicidal depression back then; “Living and Dying in ¾ Time”. You should listen to all of it, because it tells a lot about where his mind was back then. Amazing stuff.
“ I got my hush puppies on, I guess I was never meant for Glitter Rock n Roll”… Still my favorite line of this song. Jimmy you were meant for so much more and we are still missing you today. RIP
I fear that Jay is about 15 years too young to appreciate A Pirate Looks At 40. You need to be at the age of reflecting on, accepting, being at peace, with your life and Jay is still too focused on ambitiously looking forward. He is not there yet.
A friend's wife was killed in a car wreck. She was a huge Jimmy Buffet fan. Her funeral was on a Monday and this song was played at her funeral. It seemed so appropriate for her love of Jimmy. Thanks for doing this one!!❤❤❤
Oh gosh, this is my #1 favorite song ever. The first Buffet song I'd ever heard, in 1974, a couple yrs before he released Margaritaville. Does it not give warm and loving vibes? "And, darling, it's I love you so. That's the reason I just let you go." Yes, Amber, the sentiment is lovely. His voice is at it's best as well. I've never seen this video as there was no such thing in '74. It'll be played at my memorial one day. Be blessed ❤
This is the first song I ever heard from Jimmy Buffett and I loved it and his voice -tone, pace and lyrics right away. And I was 14! As the years went by, just grew to love and respect him, his songs and his talent even more ❤ As I saw in a previous post, Rest in Paradise Jimmy ❤❤❤
I remember when I heard he first passed...I thought he's not gone, just headed out to San Francisco...coincidentally he passed away on Labor Day weekend.Fins Up Jimmy
This one hit me hard tonight. His love for Jane was amazing & deep. I envy that. I cried tonight listening to this just now & ive heard it a million times before. RIP, Jimmy. Rest in Paradise. #FinsUp #BubblesUp
Been a Parrot head since the late 80s. I was always a metal guy, but his music was such a clean break for me. We went Key West for a few weeks. Went to his restaurant and had a cheeseburger in paradise. One of the nights he came in, closed the place off, and performed some new music that he was trying out to see what people think. That music ened up on Banana Wind. He actually went around to every table, talked, and asked what we thought. I've seen him close to 30 or more times live since then.
I met JB when he first moved to the keys. He remained my friend for over 40 years. He really was the down to Earth man he seems to be. He once told me he wrote stories. Some of them just paid to support the important ones. This is the first song I've listened to since the day he died. Still having a hard time with it. Thank you for this, I know the last thing he'd want would be for people to be sad. We miss you JB
Jimmy Buffett did not have a lot of commercial successes on the radio, but he had a gigantic fan base. To his long time followers, he is known and loved as much for his ballads as for his island, beach music. His biggest one is probably "A Pirate Looks At Forty". RIP Jimmy.
Far and away my favorite Buffett song. It always makes me remember back to the love of my life. The woman I haven't seen in 30 years and will never see again. It wasn't our song per se. It's just that it is the way I feel about her.
Saw Jimmy Buffett live once and he was FANTASTIC!!! The whole show was fun and dancing and love! 💕 Plus he’d had someone film our parking lot, so through the whole show the video screens showed us partying before the concert! Buffett live was the true experience. 🎉😊
I was in college at Univ of Fla when Jimmy starting hitting it big. He never forgot his roots and the people, and would stop off before or after his tours and do FREE concerts for the students. It was so amazing, his band would go off stage after about an hour of rockin' it out, and Jimmy would sit on a stool with his acoustic guitar and tell stories about things in his life, the tour, it was so personal and intimate... the way he could connect with every person there. He did this for 30 minutes or so, then the band would come back out and they would play more big hits to close the show. I will never forget it.
So glad you liked this song. It’s simple and sweet because sometimes music doesn’t have to be complicated. Thank you Jay and Amber. I know not your favorite Jay but you gave it a good try. For me it’s a song I appreciated years after first hearing it
I've always loved this song. Another sentimental song of his which I love is "The Captain & The Kid". It was written in honor of his grandfather who had passed away. There are two versions of the song. If you do a reaction, listen to the version off of his "Havana Daydreamin'" album. He re-recorded it for this album and it is much better version in my opinion.
I liked this song long before I knew it was JB who sang it. In fact, I was a bit shocked to find out he was the one who sang it. One of my favorite love songs ❤❤❤
This was always my favorite song by Jimmy. I learned it on guitar and if I only have a few minutes to play, this is the song. For true fans, search RU-vid for Jimmy on early Letterman where Dave asked him to play this song... which he did, right on the chair right next to Dave's desk. That was when I committed to learn this song.
This was a big hit for him. This put him on the map and is the first song most people actually heard from him. This is the song that introduced Jimmy to the world. It's an incredibly beautiful song with beautiful melody, chord progressions and lyrics.
50 years to the day of his death he wrote this song. It was written in the Howard Johnson's in the San Francisco Bay Area town of Mill Valley, where I grew up. I knew that hotel well on Shoreline highway. Not from ever staying there but passing it by for years. He was depressed, away from his woman and playing the Labor Day weekend at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo. A place I've been to several times and where Janis Joplin's Memorial was held. Wish I'd seen him there.
Jay, you should know by now that you can’t know a musician by listening to only 2 songs! 😊Jimmy was fun and light, but he had other sides that we all love. My heart absorbed this beautiful love song the minute I heard it when it premiered in 1974. It told you so much about the man. R.I.P. Jimmy
Dude. I’ve listened to this song a million times, but I never saw the video, and I am in tears. This is one of our favorites of his. Wife and I have the lyric “with you I’d walk anywhere” inscribed in our wedding bands. I miss going to his concerts. You want a peppy Buffett song: “Boat Drinks” and “Volcano”
So many of Buffett's songs have that swagger and sarcastic humor to them, this one definitely catches you by surprise by being so sincere and sentimental. Sometimes I think his reputation as "Mr. Margaritaville" undersells just how talented he really was.
I love this song, Jimmy Buffett’s music will live on. I surely miss his presence, he did brighten our country up, especially with Margarita Ville. ♥️♥️ one for Jimmy…♥️👏👏👏
A few of my friends and I, who have been Parot heads since our teens have had an annual end of summer tradition for years. We gather at our local beach on the last day of summer. Have a cookout around a bonfire, listening to Jimmy's music. At sunset we each take a shot of rum to toast the man and pour a shot into the surf for him while playing a favorite song of one member of the group... This year our simple little ritual took on a whole new meaning, and we all agreed that from this year forward, that last song will be "Bubbles Up".
Oh good gravy, I thought my tears were done for Jimmy. It will never not be a bittersweet song because last Labor Day Weekend, Monday never really came.
This is the first Jimmy Buffet song I ever heard. In the summer of 1975, I was a new college grad and was shopping for stereo equipment in a stereo store in San Antonio. The guy working there said, "Hey, listen to this" and played "Come Monday". He then told me about the sailing, treasure hunting life of this guy and I stayed and listened to the whole albumn. I was hooked on Jimmy Buffet. Not sure if I bought anything, cus I'm sure that I was broke. Jimmy was a treasure. A great voice, incredible entertainer, and he grew a business empire on his own brand. RIP Jimmy!
Great tune; should’ve been a #1; think it made #4. The tune that turned his life around and put him on the map! Great video ; shows how humble he was. The world lost a great one when JB passed away. So many favorites!! Hard to pick just one, so I’ll go with two: “A Pirate Looks At 40”, and “One Particular Harbor”❤❤❤❤RIP JIMMY BUFFET!! “Bubbles Up”!
Jimmy was as real as they get. Genuine, humble, approachable, loved his fans. He mentioned his only 2 and a half hit records, full of great classics I might add. He still ended up being one of the richest celebrities ever, but never ever let that go to his head. No bling bling, just Jimmy.
There is so much more to Jimmy Buffett that you need to explore. I would suggest the 4 CD album "Jimmy Buffett boats beaches bars & ballads". This album breaks down his earlier songs into those categories. He was such an amazing and kind man that truly appreciated his fans. He knew me by the character I dressed as at concert/tailgates but also by my name which shocked the hell out of me. He thought that was funny. I so miss that amazing man.
I'm with you all the way on this one, Amber! I remember like it was yesterday when "Come Monday" was released....... my graduation year of 1974 and it immediately became my #1 favorite song of Jimmy Buffett. Beautiful melody and vocal performance and the key change transition is one of the best I've ever heard in a pop song!
Love This One! Always find myself singing harmony to portions! A little more serious than some of his other top hits! Great Choice and Reaction, You Guys! :)
I discover Jimmy with “Songs You Know by Heart” on cassette. This song came from a period of his life that many of us older people can understand. Work and responsibilities can take the life out of you. But Come Monday, it’ll be alright!
I am still in mourning since losing Jimmy. I saw him in concert at least 20 times over the years & the pre-concert tailgate was a whole other experience!
This was my introductory song to Jimmy Buffett...listening to it in my buddy's VW Bug, I asked, "Is this Roger Miller?" Some years later I was at a small venue called Tippitina's in New Orleans listening to The Meters when Jimmy Buffett came in and played a set. A short intermission came along and I went out to powder my nose. I turned around and Jimmy Buffett was behind me. I said, "I have all your albums since Rancho Delux." He replied, "So you're the one."
I've been listening to him since the mid '70's. The party stuff is fun and there are some great songs in his catalog. This and "It's My Job" are pretty mellow along with a hundred other songs, but there's some really fun up-tempo stuff out there too. Check out "Pencil Thin Mustache", "Fins", or "Boat Drinks" for some killer up-tempo stuff... and probably another hundred songs.
I liked this song a lot when it came out, but never remembered the artist. Years after "Margaritaville" I put the two together, and I appreciated it more. And I can actually hit most of the notes.
Treat yourselves and listen to He Went to Paris and A Pirate Looks at 40. It's all Jimmy! They just announced down here in Florida that January 25th will be Jimmy Buffet Day. We will have license plates soon and there is a bill to make A1A Jimmy Buffet Blvd...he did such wonderful things for FL.
Great song! Mellow and smooth. I really enjoyed his duet with Martina Mcbride called Trip Around The Sun. It's also a little slower and more country vibe. But it hits me.
You guys could spends months and months doing Jimmy's songs. I grew up with Jimmy as the soundtrack to my youth. My entire family were Parrotheads. I miss him so much. Give A Pirate Looks At 40 and Pencil Thin Mustache a listen. You'll love em. Love you guys!
You should really consider giving “Little Miss Magic” a listen. He wrote the song for his daughter shortly after she was born. My dad played this song for me my whole life and it was our song for the father daughter dance at my wedding! It’s a beautiful sentiment for his baby girl. The simplicity of his imagining what his daughter will grow into is just.. ugh. Amazing. I CANNOT listen to this song without tears in my eyes. It’s a special song and has always been a personal favorite. More people need to be talking about this song for JB!! He’s so much more than Margaritaville!
This song literally saved his life. He said many years ago that he was really down on tour in California and he was really contemplating suicide and he wrote this song and it pulled him out of his sadness
