I was in the Marine Corps when this came out. I was with the 5th Marine Regiment which was based in an area of Camp Pendleton, CA called 33 Area aka Camp Margarita. Of course, this song became our unofficial regimental boozing song. About every 3rd or 4th song that played in the base club was this one. Good times!

Back in the 70s in Santa Barbara, a radio station was giving away tickets to a Buffett concert at the County Fair. It included a bus ride up to Santa Maria with a margarita bar, a stop on the way at Cold Spring Tavern where we picked up hamburgers, and the concert. No one wanted margaritas on the way home. lol Jimmy Buffett is in a class all by himself. ♥ So happy you love him too.

One Particular Harbour, A Pirate Looks At Forty, Earl's Dead - Cadillac For Sale, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Tin Cup Chalice, and Book On The Shelf are just a few of my favorites. You really can't go wrong with anything he's done and he'll take you down island no matter where you are.

Jimmy Buffet, born on Christmas day and still 75 years young ! I love the lyrics how it starts as " nobodies fault" , then " hell it could be my fault " and ends with "its my own damn fault " . I think we all see times in our lives like that . I hope you continue on this parrothead ( what the fans are called ) journey. I've enjoyed Jimmy since i was 11 in '77. I wore out my 45 of this and "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Can you believe Jimmy is worth 900 million? he earned every penny. God bless that man.

Magaritaville is an alcohol and left-handed cigarette induced state of mind. My two favourite songs by Jimmy are Pencil Thin Moustache and Volcano. At the 1987 America's Cup Jimmy Buffett would appear unannounced, guitar over shoulder, in a random Freo pub and put on free impromptu concerts.

Jimmy started out in Mobile Alabama as a "Country & Western" singer with some Rock & Roll influence, but growing up on the cusp of the Caribbean, he quickly added "Island" to "his sound". Margaritaville was one of his first adventures into that, and is the unofficial anthem of his fan base.

Jimmy has built a near billion dollar empire on escapism and sentimental, family and party songs and experiences. Great tune. Underneath the happy island feel is the tragic story of an alcoholic becoming aware of his habit. In the first chorus, he sings "Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, but I know it's nobody's fault." By the end, he's singing "... and I know it's my own damn fault". It truly is a masterpiece of lyrics and music, creating the impression that "Margaritaville" is an island paradise -- then making it clear that it is a drunken delusion. It's easy to miss the real point of this real-life story.
@theccpisaparasite8813
@theccpisaparasite8813 2 года назад
IKR, these kids totally missed it! That's part of the genius of the song. The juxtaposition of that jubilant island party music with a story of a guy wallowing in drunken despair over a situation he created.

@robertsmith-oh9mo
@robertsmith-oh9mo Год назад
You really don't understand this song. The song mentions nothing about getting drunk and regretting hit life's decisions. There is a reference to drinking but not to getting drunk. The reference to there being a woman to blame and it being his fault. What male of the species hasn't been in the same situation with a woman when it comes to break up. there always doubts as to what went wrong and whose fault it was. Have you ever been to the Florida Keys? It is a different culture than anywhere else and it's fun to watch the tourists trying to fit in on their two week vacations and looking totally out of place. Lighten up and quit reading something into the song that isn't there. Another song to listen to is "There's a cowboy in the jungle."

Jimmy's sister, Lucy, owns the actual inspiration for Margaritaville. Ono Island is located just off the coastline of Orange Beach, Alabama. When Hurricane Frederick hit, it literally changed the geography of the island. Florida tried to claim it, and Alabama said, "Oh no you don't!" Hence the name.

For fun songs, there's the classic of "Cheeseburger in Paradise", "Boat Drinks". or "Why Don't We Get Drunk" For serious songs, there's "He Went to Paris", "A Pirate Looks at Forty", or "Come Monday". But they're all best enjoyed with a glass of something, later in the day when you're done with all obligations.

You do know this song is about alcoholism right?
@pmgandco6322
@pmgandco6322 2 года назад
@@ianstradian It is most definitely *not*. Just because he is trying to drown his sorrows with Margaritas doesn’t make it about alcoholism. He is describing somewhat purposeless days of living in the Florida Keys, and reflecting on a failed relationship, attempting to drown out the memory of the breakup with Margaritas. His friends tell him it’s her fault, he realizes it was his. Not because of drinking, it’s because he has been living a laid-back purposeless life; he took to care-free beach resort life too far.
@ianstradian
@ianstradian 2 года назад
@@pmgandco6322 Jimmy Buffet actually said it’s about alcoholism…. End of argument. Every issue or problem in the song is cured “by a frozen concoction that helps me hang on” This song is about alcoholism.
@pmgandco6322
@pmgandco6322 2 года назад
@@ianstradian Cite source, including interviewer, publication, date, etc. Otherwise, you are speculating and applying subjective interpretation and conjecture. Interviews from multiple interviews with Rolling Stones, 60 Minutes, Katie Couric… all asking him about Margaritaville, he replies that he wrote it starting in Austin and finished it on the 7 Mile Bridge, about 10 minutes total writing time, and it’s about escapism, beach life, and sure, about mourning the loss of his girl. Even on his own website he describes it “A laid-back anthem about escapism and life in the tropics.”
@ianstradian
@ianstradian 2 года назад
@@pmgandco6322 I can’t site the interview but it was a charity event for a drug abuse foundation. But listen to the lyrics, everything is solved by alcohol from failed relationships to stepping on a bottle cap and cutting his heal… he knows it and even says as much…. “Some people say that there’s a woman to blame,,, but I know it’s my own damn fault “ And it all leads back to that “frozen concoction that helps me hang on” Meaning he can’t cope with out alcohol. The song is about alcoholism! BTW: the very first JB’s Margaritaville bar was in Gulfshores Alabama. ( my home town) Jimmy Buffet is from Mobile Alabama. If you read his book “A pirate looks at 50” he talks about the role alcohol played in his youth.

This song is part of our culture, glad you guys found it! It's deeper than you'd think; Jimmy Buffet is singing about grieving a lost relationship, and he's drinking his way through it (wasting away)...he slowly learns to take responsibility for the situation as the song progresses. Something I think many of us go through. Love y'all!

Waaay back in the day I was in a bit of a rut and was working at a running shop. Rough times. We were only allowed to play adult contemporary radio stations and one of them always used to play this song. I really identified with it because Jimmy is telling the story of being stuck in a rut as well. Brings back some bittersweet memories.

Pretty good food and the atmosphere is very laid back. I've also seen through a travel vlogger that there is a Margaritaville in the Caribbean that likes features a giant flip flop and also gives out flip flops. Might be worth checking out!
