This song was very personal for Phil. He wrote it as he was going through a rough divorce from his first wife. Her lawyer was raking Phil across the coals; being demanding and unreasonable. So yeah, Phil was a little pissed off. 😄

@christianparsons6050
@christianparsons6050 Год назад
@@johnvetere His relentless touring with Genesis in the late seventies meant leaving his wife, young son and adopted daughter alone in England for months at a time. In ‘78 the bands management wanted them to make a final push to crack America, the upside being that would mean shorter tours in the future. His wife however told him that if he went, she wouldn’t be there when he got back. She wasn’t joking. He got back and found she had emigrated to Canada with a new man and taken the kids with her. Phil briefly moved to Canada to try and patch things up but to no avail…he ended up back in England alone in 1979…With nothing to do for a year whilst the other members of Genesis wrote their solo albums Phil started doing the same at his home studio, never having written complete songs before…what came out was the album ‘Face Value’ which was clearly all about his ex wife his sadness…The following album is where the song I don’t care anymore came from, which was less downbeat but still had some leftover anger over the divorce proceedings which were ongoing…Sorry for long reply..but you get the picture at least. I recommend the audiobook of his biography, Not Dead Yet…it’s excellent.😅

I cranked this one up in the mid-1980s while going through a major breakup. I found myself singing "I DON'T CARE ANYMORE" at the top of my lungs, and it was actually slightly refreshing and helpful. Good therapy.b You can really feel what Phil felt (He was inspired by his failed first marriage). Pain can really bring out emotion in one's music. One of his very best solo songs. It has the starkness of his early solo work and that great impassioned delivery at the end. Killer stuff here. The song is definitely personal, part of the batch of songs he wrote about his first bitter divorce (as well as "In the Air Tonight"). The instrument you are asking about is actually a Moog Taurus bass pedal, which is usually played with the feet for deep, sustained bass notes.

Planned to have a civil divorce even though he cheated. And was engaged before our divorce was final. But determined to keep it civil. Then I found he was smearing me. Lies about me when he’s the one who actually did what he accused me of. Found out years later he had also smeared me to our son in the same way. Not acceptable. Didn’t care if he hurt our children because he knew it would hurt me. Still have tried my best not to bring my kids into it. They don’t need to know that shit. But I did set my son straight when I found out. At the point I didn’t care what anyone else thought about me. But not my kids. Especially when it’s all lies.

Phil played drums on every studio recording he's done (Solo, Genesis, and Brand X among others). Bill Buford (Yes, King Crimson) was the original replacement drummer after Peter Gabriel left Genesis. Bill was on playing when I saw A Trick of The Tail tour. Bill was one of the first people to suggest that Phil to become the singer. He remembers saying to Phil (during their Brand X sessions together), "Why don't you stand up front and sing, and I'll cover for you on the drums? Then, you know, it won't fall apart" He was just concerned with doing a good job on drums as a kind of 'hired gun'. You can hear Buford on the song Cinema Show from the Seconds Out double live album. Chester was eventually hired and was a perfect permanent touring drummer.

@MidwesternCornbilly
@MidwesternCornbilly Год назад
@Kevin M Bill filled the role and did the job he initially intended to do, which was give Genesis a solid anchor for touring and moving forward. A Trick of The Tail is a great 'comeback' album of sorts. It wasn't guaranteed that their fan base would continue to follow them without Peter. They had a lot to prove, especially to themselves, and Bill was instrumental in achieving that. Bruford was (is) a drumming god, in the world of progressive rock, his name being associated with Genesis carried some heavy clout. Bill has admitted that he wasn't a good fit for them. He likes to improvise, and Genesis is more structured and disciplined in their approach. He would play a song, and the band needed to tell him to play it more like what was on the record. I don't think it was a falling out as much as a recognition that his job was accomplished, and it was time for he and Genesis to move onto their next musical evolutions.

Phil reminds us of one CRITICAL element of music: Do you believe the artist in their message? I believe Phil every time.

In my opinion, this is one of Phil's best songs in a catalog full of great songs. Of course this entire album is fantastic. The rawness, the passion and drive of the song never stop blowing me away and seeing him not only do it live, but open with this in 1994 was a major thrill. By the way, Chester Thompson played with Phil touring (Genesis, too) for ages and he's a spectacular drummer in his own right. Also, the guy banging on that instrument - those are actually bass pedals, meant to be used with one's feet (think Geddy Lee triggering keyboard effects while he's playing bass and singing). Great call on this one, guys!

This song from 1982 & In The Air Tonight are about his first divorce. A great song of his with some great horns is Sussudio. Show the official video so you see the horns as they are playing. It shows them playing musicians in a small The horn section are the horn section from Earth, Wind & Fire.I think you will both like it. Phil Collins did Easy Lover with Philip Bailey Jr. Who does those high notes for EWF. I think Phil Collins even produced one of Philip Bailey Jrs solo album. I think you already did the song but u don't think that you realized that he was from Earth, Wind & Fire

I was in my teens in the 80s and Phil Collins music, either solo or with Genesis was my hands down favorite. I connected deeply with it. It was as if his music was being written for my life. It got me through some really tough times. "I Don't Care Anymore" became an anthem at one point. I didn't care. Lying in bed at night, listening through my headphones, his music, his voice, his passion, filled me with what I needed to push ahead. It filled a void inside. I will forever love the gift that is Phil Collins. If it's not already on your list, his song "One More Night" is one not to be missed. The song and video are beautiful.

When I was doing my Army out-processing back in '86, I made a cassette tape with this song back-to-back, both sides. 90 minutes of just this song. As I drove around on post, going to one place to the next, getting everything on my list checked off, this is what I listened to. "Walking away from something toxic"... indeed. Funny what we do when we're young, huh? Great pick for us, thanks so much!

Oh one of my absolute favorites from Phil Collins! 💙 I remember blasting this in my car after an abusive 6 year relationship ended...I still have this cassette (I saved a few of them from that era, nostalgia) and still listen to this song during these difficult times dealing w chronic illness & toxic situations! I just sing it word for word, its empowering. He wrote this during his divorce, the same w "In the Air Tonight"...his emotions were raw and it made the best music!!! Just love him! ❤

Phil released Duke together with Genesis in Spring 1980, then released his first solo album, Face Value, in early 81, then released Abacab again with Genesis in Autumn the same year, then released Hello I Must Be Going! (from which this song is) in Autumn 82, then continued with Genesis by releasing "Genesis" (aka the "Mama album") in Summer 83, then his next solo album No Jacket Required in 85, and Invisible Touch with Genesis in 86. Not to forget the famous songs external to his or Genesis' albums, like Against All Odds (84), Easy Lover (84), or Separate Lives (85). And of course we didn't talk about the whole 70s before all that... This man was a Musical Box!

So yes, that's actually Phil Collins playing the drums you hear, the drummer Chester Thompson is just there for the visual. But Collins recorded almost all of the instruments on this song. I didn't ever really appreciate it until I went through a really rough breakup. We lived together, and after we split she didn't leave, cause she had to find a new place, so I had to have this daily attack from her, even though she cheated on me. Then she'd switch gears and ask if we could work it out. I was so tired of her in general, then I heard this song and thought "that's exactly where I'm at. she's playing these games, trying to get reactions out of me, and I've just dropped it entirely, I just don't care about anything she had to say."
