True. Regardless of any "bumps" that happened it may not have been a coincident that this started right after they were extra strict for a while.

It isn’t just the losing of weight. We also need to change our relationship with food, which to me is the hardest thing to accomplish.

It is difficult however; it is possible. It just takes time and we are in an instant gratification society. It all boils down to self-love and self-care. It has nothing to do with a scale. ❤

In the past I have asked myself, How many times can you lose the same 10 pounds?! I got this way because I didn’t make good choices in how I ate. Giving myself cheat days was only telling my mind and my body that it was okay to go back to how it all began. When I started this way of eating, I knew there would be no more falling off the wagon for special occasions or just a taste of something from the past. I had to be totally dedicated for this to work......for me. Food is an addiction for me. You wouldn’t expect a recovering alcoholic to relapse without terrible consequences. Same with food. It’s never “just one”. I know this might not be a popular comment, but it really is a true one. I have been there....many times over. You guys are awesome in your honesty and your willingness to put yourselves out there! Much love ❤️.

I think not stepping on the scale makes it worse; best to know where you're at even if it's not what you want to see. Reality helps us from letting things get worse. As bad as a few pounds gain is, if you don't acknowledge it , you're setting yourself up for an even bigger gain. Nip it in the bud.

Can someone explain the logistics of this? Whenever I think it through I count you get up as many times as you fall? Or am I completely missing something? Feel like such an idiot😂

Lisa, when we sleep, we are usually reclining. So the first thing we do in the day is get up, come to standing; that’s one. When we fall, and get back up, we’ve now gotten up two times. No matter how many times you fall, GET BACK UP... and you will always be rising one more time than you have fallen ✌️

I gained 20 lbs in August. TWENTY! My 92 year old mother passed away. Stage 7F (the last stage) Alzheimer's. I've been her primary caregiver for over ten years and I held her hand as she passed peacefully. It was a rollercoaster of intense emotion and I'm grateful that I was able to be with her as she took her last breath. But it has been hard, so hard. Now I've got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight. Thank you for reminding me. The two of you are so inspiring.

Your honesty about the journey is what matters. As a person who has gained and lost and gained and lost over the years, I knew (from the beginning) you would hit a wall eventually. I was curious how you would handle it, especially when I saw you guys leaning into the “business” of it all. I know that just by watching we obligate you, for several reasons, to keep it honest, but your authenticity has really sealed the deal for me in terms of your channel. Keep up the good work of living your best lives as best you can, just remember to allow yourselves compassion and grace, no matter who’s watching. That’s what I’m trying to do. I pray that those of us on this journey show ourselves love as often as possible. Even at your biggest, your body serves you and is still a blessing. Self love and body acceptance is nonnegotiable throughout the process. We will never take good care of something we hate. Healthy days with joy, cheat days with joy, always with love. Thank you for sharing your lives in this way.❤️

You guys are such an inspiration! Sharing the success of your plant based journey with others has probably motivated thousands to switch to a healthy plant based diet. And thank you for your willingness to be transparent and to share your struggles. We all have struggles and that makes us appreciate that even with great success comes setbacks. I am also plant based. About 13 months ago I cut out all processed foods as well and also went low carb, as I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and needed to control my post meal blood sugar spikes. So, that means I eat a lot of avocados, olives, as well as nuts and seeds. I was amazed at how my hunger drive, which used to be almost constant, diminished drastically. I lost that 30 pounds that had seemed impossible to lose, without ever being hungry or feeling deprived, while eating whole foods plant based, eliminating processed carbs, limiting starches and completely eliminating sugar. If you find yourself at a plateau, you might try the low carb WFPB and see if that gives you the breakthrough like it did for me. We all look forward to hearing about the continued success of your journey!

After a health scare in 2017 (blood clots in both lungs) I spent 11 days in the hospital. During the 11 days I was eating properly portioned food and lost 14 pounds. The weight loss inspired my hubby and I to make a bunch of changes to the way we ate. Then in June of this year I had issues with my blood pressure and was told I had high cholesterol. The diagnosis’s brought back my anxiety over my health in a big way. It was time to make even more changes. We decided to be 90% plant based. We don’t restrict salt or oil but monitor our intake with an awesome app. I love to cook so it’s been fun changing old recipes to healthier versions and trying out lots of vegetarian and vegan recipes. Who knew you could make queso from oats! I love your channel. Your honest and humorous take on weight loss, eating healthy and being a couple is wonderful. Keep up the great work!

I started eating right in Feb 2019 after looking at a photo my son took of me in Dec 2018. I weighed 252 lbs in Feb of 2019. By Jan 2020 I weighed 165 lbs. I was doing good till the coronavirus pandemic. By the way I was also going to the gym 5 days a week up until the gym closed because of the Coronavirus. To make a long story short I am now backup to 190. I have got to get my head back on straight and get out of this depression. At this time last year I weighed 180 so I'm actually starting over now from this time last year and that's just as depressing. I enjoy watching your videos and this last video made me realize that I'm only human and to stop feeling sorry for myself and get back on the right track and that's exactly what I'm doing. I will continue to watch your videos and get my inspiration from you two. We can do this😊😍

You know how we're always told not to compare ourselves to others, especially for weight loss? That includes ourselves! Try not to compare yourself now to what you were last year. Your current weight has been affected by so much, a chunk of it, if not more, by circumstances outside of your control. Use your weight from last year as motivation but not for guilt and know that if you did it once you absolutely CAN do it again and don't stress about the pace. With all that is going on right now, simply trying and continuing is a major feat. 🙂

I know quarantine is hard. If you want to, try doing just TWO MINUTES of exercise, several times a day. Something like stepping up and down a 4” step, not too difficult but enough to get your blood pumping. Day ONE do it ONCE Day TWO do it TWICE Day THREE do it THREE times. From Day FOUR on, do it before you eat anything and/or at least FIVE times per day. This kind of interval training can reset your metabolism AND give you health benefits. If you don’t have stairs in your house you can buy a little step aerobics thingy online, or use any exercise equipment you have in the house. Heck, I started out lying on my back and bicycling. Take good care.

Sheryl Krupat That’s great! And if you’ve been doing yoga, hopefully you won’t have the initial neck strain that a lot of us get when we start Pilates. Thank you for sharing your story here in the comments. You have encouraged and inspired me as well. Shortly before the quarantine I got an inner ear issue that resulted in vertigo so severe that I still can’t stand or walk comfortably for any period of time. There is physical therapy for balance issues, but I had to stop going around March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Needless to say the inability to do even the simplest thing consistently like walk around the block has resulted in more more weight gain than I would like. Chair exercises strained my back and I live in a tiny space and really don’t have room for an exercise bike, but I did find a solution. I found a wide stable stepper on eBay and I think I can do the short excercise intervals while gripping the doorway for stability. Anyway, corresponding with you has perked me up as well. Now I just have to unbox it and try it out. Thank you for sharing and best of luck with your exercise adventures!

For what it's worth .. I find it crucial to weigh myself everyday! You guys are talking about 30+ lb weight gain and I think it is helpful to see this happening and to put a cap on how far you will let it go. Set a limit now and make that a very rigid cut off for any period of lack of control. I gained weight during the first 3 months of this lockdown - it got to 10 lbs and that scared me to death because I know how hard it is to get things back to where they were. Also, I too switched to plant based whole food eating BUT if once in a while I really want something outside that eating plan, I don't beat myself up for indulging - I have it and it's done .. back to the program the next day. It is interesting to note what foods you ate while you were off the wagon, so to speak, because if there is a pattern, cheese or chips or whatever, maybe if you allow yourself to have the thing you really love once in a great while, you can sometimes nip the problem in the bud. Not always but I find that works most of the time. Good luck.

It isn’t failure that defines a person. It’s their reaction to it that matters. One repentant person is of greater cause for celebration than a person who has stayed the course. And of course we all fail. What they don’t mention is when the work is done. Because it is of great note. A time to celebrate and look up to your next goal. I am happy you guys are back on the horse.
@maggiewillis6477

This is true, just not sure I would call gaining some weight as a failure.
@chickenmonger123
@chickenmonger123 4 года назад
Maggie Willis A failure isn’t anything besides a departure from a desired goal. Who or what caused it is not always important. The importance is if your goal is different from where you are going. They set a goal. They had found themselves away from the path they wanted to be on. So in this case it was a failure to be on their desired path. It would have been a failure until they chose a new goal, and pursued it. Or returned to the path to their goal. Gaining the same amount of weight might not be a failure for someone else not trying to accomplish a goal that includes losing weight. Theirs was to lose weight, and get healthier via a whole food plant diet. And it ultimately wasn’t proved a failure to reach their goals. Proved to just be a setback.

Everything you've said resonates with me so much, everything is worse since the isolation of covid and I battle depression, anxiety and binge/food addiction too.♥️ One of the coaching people I follow said today: it's not failure if you learned something, but a steppingstone to learn what you need to get to where you want to go. Appreciate your honesty so much.

You guys have made so much progress! As someone losing weight, I totally understand getting off course. It's hard to constantly watch your weight especially with a lot of events going on, being stressed, etc all kinds of things really. The fact that you're not giving up is what matters most. In my eyes you're doing great!!

Hey there you two. It’s been awhile since I’ve watched and commented, though that’s all my discomfort with my own food habits and not disinterest in you. Thank you for this share. We really went off the rails after March, are just getting back on track now, and this was so helpful to me today.

Live and learn as they say. The good thing is that you both keep putting one foot in front of the other on the journey to health. I will say, from personal experience, if I make my vegan/plant based diet too restricted...eventually it backfires. Right now I'm mad at the very low fat/very high carb version of vegan food. It's actually made my blood sugar worse. So, I'm determined to find a more balanced and less restricted approach. I think I'd rather control portions but eat more fat and protein and less carbs for variety...and...hopefully it'll help get my blood sugar down. I also deal with some other health issues, so it is annoying that what helps one thing makes another worse! I have gotten a benefit from HCLF, but right now, my sugar is a more concerning thing.

I went through all those feelings with you, when you were talking about getting off track, feeling bad, hiding the scale, waiting to weigh, discovering how much you'd gained, etc... Been there so many times, and even recently, but today, I seem to be able to get to that stopping place a little sooner than I used to. Feels so good to feel better. Not sure where that place is, in my thinking, that justifies feeling good binging, vs feeling well eating on plan. Still learning. Thank you so much for your honesty.

The thing that changed my ups and downs was losing weight a way I could maintain. I learned that I can’t cut out EVERYTHING because I’ll obsess and the eat like I’m starving. Like pasta. I’ve switched over to lentil pasta and I love it. I’ve also been working on my view of food in general. It’s hard not giving it power over you. I just want to be healthy.

Hi Jessica and Brian, I'm sorry you're struggling & also really liked such a positive message at the conclusion. I know you - and everyone going through anything unpleasant - can turn things around to great happiness and success. I'm wondering if you know exactly why this happens, not only having bumps in the road (do you keep food and emotion journals?) but why the weight for both of you comes on so much so fast, scientifically? (I think such an amount of weight only unintentionally happens to people who used to be obese or who used to restrict, from observing people around me, and at this point I think you fit into both categories in some ways.) I don't know if you have a plan going forward - maybe read or watch what you did in the beginning for a tune up or for inspiration or reminders that this is what you're doing and it matters? You probably know the books, channels and websites like Forks Over Knives; Plant Based Network; Live Kindly; NutritionFacts.org; Lilykoi Hawaii; Grace Pascale; High Carb Hannah - for easy recipes; RU-vid videos of Doctor John McDougall, Doctor Neil Barnard, Doctor Caldwell Esselstyn; Chef AJ; Rip Esselstyn's Ted Talk; the Plant Proof podcast; Deliciously Ella podcast; Nutrition Rounds Podcast; The Rich Roll podcast; Rip Esselstyn's Plant-Strong podcast... Maybe get a plant based nutritionist or dietician for a while? One who understands food as well as emotions? Also, maybe ease up on trying to get to a certain weight by a certain time? It can really mess with your body, mood, and mind - and cause weight gain above where you ever were. If you'd end up one year losing 1/4-1/2 pound most months (Jessica), you'd probably be upset but you wouldn't have gained so much - not that you would have known what you were saved from, as is in life... You're close to a regular healthy weight and staying the same weight for months at a time while eating real, whole foods (and sometimes snacks and desserts made from them but not going overboard) is a lot better than gaining weight. Most people plateau and then start seeing weight come off while eating the exact same way for months at a time - it just happens - but you keep restricting, gaining, then restricting, gaining, restricting... Without knowing the physical or psychological or logistical issues about food or the rest of your life, I can only say it's not a great way to go. I so want you, in a few years, to intuitively just eat all the plant based food with enjoyment, no concerns or worries about weight gain or weight loss because you'll be okay, maybe 5 up or 5 down on occasion, but it works it's way out. If you'd lose about 2-3 pounds a month after getting rid of most of what you recently gained, and stayed at that pace a while for a few months (Brian), isn't that better than gaining so much? I'm not in any way telling you to go easy when it comes to your health or to leave veganism/plant based eating ever (I'm vegan for my whole life and wish most people would be, too), but letting you know that times of consistency and not much going down on the scale are okay, expected, healthy, and even beneficial. It gives you time to enjoy food, be less stressed, let your body find where it needs to be, which will ultimately be a healthy weight. I hope (other than Brian's music, which he's graciously shared -and yes, Bruce Cockburn has such a pure responsibility to doing whatever he can to make his part of the world better than it was, with his songs or anything else), do you have things other than weight loss? Even if it's trying and enjoying new foods and uploading, which is part of the process but maybe fun? What about healthy moving? To build muscle, increase flexibility, keep yourselves able to get around your whole lives? Do you lift weights, do cardio, take walks, swim, hike, dance, do yoga, qi gong, Tai chi, or any fun movement? Do you meditate? It's so good for you, from deep breaths into your cells to having quiet time. It truly saves time each day because you're so much more calm and focused and less stressed but more sharp - answers come so much quicker, and living in the moment is so healthy physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It only takes breathing in and out ten minutes once or twice a day. While I'm saying it's all okay and to stress less about food, I think you might want to be more consistent with what you're eating, maybe keep track for a while if you think that works for you - but not if it adds stress - maybe find and create more recipes. Do your part with food and other issues but let go of the outcome...especially specific ones (I understand the two year event, but otherwise, unless for an urgent medical issue I hope you never have, there's usually no reason you must be a certain weight by a certain time). Do what's right and it will turn out right. For another Bono sort of quotes Cockburn (I think) "Heard a singer on the radio late last night, Says he's gonna kick the darkness till it bleeds daylight." Best to you both.

Thanks for this video! This confirms something I've found true for myself... Hiding the scale is bad. Several years ago I lost a bunch of weight but then went through a bad period mentally and totally stopped weighing myself.... And all the weight came back plus a lot more. Now I'm slowly losing again (thanks to you guys and your great advice) and I've realized I'm always going to have to weigh myself at least once a week just to hold myself accountable. I'm done hiding from the truth so I can indulge in bad habits, accountability and consistency are where it's at.

I weigh myself everyday and record it in a small notebook. It’s how I keep from getting out of wack. It’s a motivator to be good if I gain, and a motivator to keep it up if I’m losing. I can’t imagine going days without doing that. I even keep a scale in our Airstream trailer. Thank you guys for your honesty and recipes.

I appreciate your sharing the challenges most face. I rarely weigh myself, relying on how my clothes fit and if my omentum has grown. Recently since playing with my precious Granddaughter and chasing her around in toddlerhood, I noticed my pants fitting better with no "overhang" and my omentum smaller. Subtle changes in activity make a difference over time. Likewise, weight can be gained subtly as the days blend into one another. You both have rich shared experiences to lean on as well as each other. Sometimes you have to take the longer route to get to a destination because of roadblocks, potholes, or even parades.
