How he got here: not on purpose. He was obsessed with Felix. It's a movie about unhealthy sexual obsession, and Oliver is not a reliable narrator. He would like to make the audience believe he planned this all out to get the estate. he would like to make himself believe it too, maybe he does. But he didn't know the estate existed until he was invited there. He was just obsessed with Felix. He slashed his tire to get close to him. He lies about his dad dying after they fight for the first time to get back on his good side. He poisoned him when he tried to apologize and was rejected. So when he says he started a friendship with Felix to get this family's wealth, that's the first indicator that he didn't. You don't slurp c*m water and fuck a grave because you're trying to get to their money, that was unnecessary to his masterplan. He just had an unhealthy sexual obsession, and when it all led to destroying this family, he pivoted and made himself believe this was his plan all along. This put, you may also see how Felix's "you're his toy and he's gonna throw you away" is not a red herring for a villain, it's Oliver's whole fear. The whole reason Oliver is obsessed with Felix and WHY all of this happens. He wants to not be thrown away so bad he takes the entire family apart from the inside because he gets SO. OBSESSED. WITH THEM. With being part of it. With not being discarded like a toy.

agreed. seeing those warnings to oliver as a red-herring for his own fears of being removed from the subject of his obsession also explains why they prob didn't bother explaining it further - the warnings had already served their purpose

You summed this whole thing up so nicely and it all of it adds up coherently to where Oliver is now in the story. Him being an unreliable narrator makes the few hiccups I saw in the movie make more sense as to why they were there. (Like Felix being depicted by others as a person who plays with his toys, then discards them despite him not quite displaying those characters throughout the movie.)

I loved this movie, I'm a big gothic chaos girlie, and my read was always that Oliver wanted Felix first and foremost, however things spiralled because he's a freaky little compulsive liar. Like, the scheming (popping the tire, pretending not to have money at the bar, the addict parents) were all centered around having Felix's attention. But then Felix drops him the first time, so he tells another, bigger lie, which lands him a summer at Saltburn. And now their spending all this time together! He gets to feel like a part of t[his] world! (notice how much of this movie is just Oliver/us looking at Felix). But then Felix catches him in the lie and doesn't want him anymore, followed by Venetia piecing together Oliver's game so he has to kill her. By the end I took it as "I've come this far, let's finish what I've started." The ending felt to me like him over-performing/over-selling that this was his plan all along, because the alternative would be admitting that he fucked it all up (couldn't control Farleigh or Venetia, ruined his relationship Felix, got kicked out of Saltburn). I don't think it's actually a class movie at all - there are bits and bobs about class disparity and issues, but they aren't the focus. I think it's a movie about a desperately insecure man who refuses to see the reality of who he is. Instead, he lies through his teeth until the bitter end. "I loved him, but I wasn't in love with him." Sure babe. Whatever you say.
@abigailg6586
@abigailg6586 5 месяцев назад
thats exactly how I read it too... a freaky little compulsive liar and unreliable narrator. And a very narcissistic love. Oliver was so desperate to be in control of how he was seen by the people around him that I think he missed the genuine affection Felix had for him. As soon as he lost control of Felix's percerption of him he felt like there was no future for their relationship, since it wouldn't be the one he had authored. I (and other people I've seen) got the impression that Felix might have been willing to forgive him in the maze scene but Oliver didn't see that (or care?) because he had already made his plan. But yeah for me there is no doubt that he was "in love" with Felix given that he literally drank his bathwater and [redacted] his grave lol Idk it's a fascinating movie that I think can be interpreted a lot of ways, which is usually what makes for good art.

Imo that's why he waited for 15 years for Sir James to die. If his original plan was Saltburn, I feel like he wouldn't wait for something passive to happen almost 2 decades after. It kind of felt like he didn't get Felix, lost his fantasy, gave up, and then saw another opportunity bc he knew he was always able to manipulate Elspeth. Like as if he read about Sir James and got like triggered or something. It felt more like Oliver as the unreliable narrator really wants everyone to believe it's been his entire plan, even though it very possibly never was.

I definitely felt like the saying “girls wanna be her and boys wanna be with her” definitely applies to Oliver’s feelings towards Felix. He wants to be apart of a higher status and Felix represent that in so many ways (his wealth, status, popularity). Whether status or Felix came first I’m still up in the air on.

I thought that the ugliness that Elspeth feared wasn’t necessarily just visual. I think it came up in her refusal to acknowledge ugly things and ugly emotions. Not acknowledging what happened with farleigh. Not looking at her son when he died as the father tried to move felix to the house. The whole scene with them closing the curtains felt like they were trying to pretend like the ugliness of death wasnt happening.

To me the scene with Felix and Oliver going to see his mother and hometown gives the sense that Felix is like “a trauma tourist” in the sense he likes to watch people struggle in real time, because he’s so far removed from it. That’s why he’s so quick to tell his family about Oliver’s troubles.

My take on the runny eggs is that they were about power for Oliver. He specifically asked for over easy eggs and then said he couldn’t eat runny eggs to display to the staff that even though class wise he is similar to them he has been taken in by the family. It foreshadows that he will become the owner of saltburn. This isn’t an “eat the rich” movie (except for maybe literally) but it is a commentary on specifically the British class system which is much less fluid than Americas. The British upper class have a suspicion and condescension of anyone beneath them and that’s what the Oliver and elspeth scene about Pamela was about. By saying that Pamela was lying he confirms what elspeth was thinking and maybe takes away a guilt she was feeling for kicking Pamela out. Oliver is doing exactly what he said Pamela was doing and him pointing the finger at her can take suspension off him. Also the perfect way to form a bond with elspeth is to gossip.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with this. That was the exact feeling I got with his relationship to Duncan. He despised how Duncan identified him as a class peer and was amused with his reaction to gentry wealth. So he needed to put Duncan down and place himself above him
@trudelulu
@trudelulu 5 месяцев назад
i thought it's because he asked for fried over easy and got sunny side up? fried over easy means you flip the eggs so the egg white is fried but the yolk is slightly runny. sunny side up means it's never flipped so the top is completely runny. i read it as a moment of humiliation for oliver because he can never fit in no matter how hard he tries. it suggests that no one at the house orders their eggs that way or that the house staff doesn't respect him enough
@Sd-sv2cm
@Sd-sv2cm 5 месяцев назад
@@trudelulu I think you’re right about the staff not respecting him and them making the wrong egg on purpose but I do think asking for eggs in a way where they’re runny and then claiming he can’t eat runny eggs is a power play, getting back at the staff for bringing him the wrong order. I don’t think he thought it out but was feeling humiliated because he didn’t know the “rules” at breakfast

@minnies-verse
@minnies-verse 5 месяцев назад
The eggs given were sunny side up, not over easy. I do think they’re symbolic of power for Oliver but moreso to showcase how he’ll never fully have the same generational power/wealth as the Cattons. I also draw this conclusion bc/ apparently, the movie was supposed to end with Oliver getting the same runny eggs served to him even though he now owns Saltburn and employs the staff. I’d speculate that, if given Oliver wasn’t lying, him ordering over-easy eggs, which are to a degree still runny, is demonstrative of how he’s had to cook his own eggs his whole life and therefore, doesn’t know the proper terminology. I personally didn’t know the difference btwn sunny side up and over-easy until my mid-teens lol

Explanation: he is an unreliable narrator. He was just THAT in love with Felix that he wanted everything from him. When he realized Felix discovered his lies and wasn't taking back, he just ended his life because he couldn't have him. Every single lie, since the beginning of the movie, was to convince himself and not the viewers as he lied his way to get close to what he desired. Oliver just gave the blades to the sister, and she ended her own life. In the end, he had Saltburn, and every single thing represented Felix. It's just a creepy obsession story.

@@tgardner11if i gauge his role correctly (he seems to be head of the staff for the entire estate, not just a butler employed by them or something), he’s an employee of the estate, not of the family. if all of them die, he stays no matter what. the only way he could be let go is i believe if the head of the estate (which by the end is Oliver) fired him himself. which from my understanding especially with staff that have been with the estate for generations or at least quite a long time, they rarely do unless they fuck up badly, or a new owner wants to have new estate staff (which is unusual, as each estate is unique and having someone with knowledge of your specific property is imperative to the functioning & upkeep). we do see him linger at El’s grave watching Oliver, so he at least was still employed then, and we don’t see staff after that at all, but it’s likely he would still work there, now for Oliver

@hurgenflerg2133 5 месяцев назад
I think the missing piece of the villain's motivation comes when you focus on the fact that the writer/director was born extremely rich. I don't think you can look at it from Oliver's point of view, you have to look at him as the result of a certain kind of person thinking up their worst nightmare, the kind of monster that they think is waiting out there to take away everything that's rightfully theirs. What if those "upwardly mobile" people who are always hanging around your super-rich family took their sick obsession with you and your stuff too far?

I get where you're coming from, but I feel you're missing out on some of the complexities with class in the UK. Fennell came from wealth, yes, but in the class system there she'd still be seen as "new money" or tied to the working class by the former gentry or "old money". She has a lot more in common with Oliver's family as opposed to the exorbitant generational wealth that the Catton family had. Were her takes on class still out of touch, especially to people actually of the working class in the UK? Absolutely. But it adds a bit more context in terms of Oliver stating that he was different for needing to "work" despite still coming from privilege himself
@candysays100
@candysays100 5 месяцев назад
@@dreadwolfrising for working class people, that's all intra-class distinctions that ultimately don't mean anything but to new money and old money people. Emerald Fennell still went to the same prestigious schools that old money people sent their children to, and would've moved in the same social circles, or would've socialised with old money types as a result. Tatler covered her 18th birthday party, and the guest list was chock full of hooray Henrys. Her Dad went to Eton, he ain't exactly slumming it comapred to old money tyes in terms of social cache. Wealth is wealth, it can buy assets and social prestigiousness , and tha'ts ultimately what separates them from the rest. Oliver is just a wealthy persons idea of a revenge story - to assume that middle class people are so ennvious as to be nefarious and untrusthworthy. It's an Old Money family, sure, but Emerald has had more of an old money upbringing than she'd probably like to admit, and she's certainly closer to old money than British middle class people probably think she is, especially since old money is falling out of favour, and the lords and that have had to open up their estates to tourists for money. She definitely would not be seen as working class, sorry but someone called "Emerald Fennell" who went to private schools and Oxford ain't seen as working class, or even close to it. There have been lots of posh, lady writers and she's definitely carrying on in that traidtion. She's basically a Mitford.

(For the history nerds out there and anyone curious) so the mansion didn’t belong to Henry VIII (or his family) as it predates him by about 150yrs (mansion because it is smaller than a castle and built for living in, not defense). There was a tradition in the UK (idk if elsewhere as well but I have seen a version of it in US historic homes regarding presidents) that when the monarch went on their tours of the lands, they’d stay with the landed gentry and that room would forever be known as The King’s Bedroom (you see brief mention of this in The Tudors actually) and kept basically untouched. They’d hang portraits of the various royals and heads of state who’d stayed with them throughout the centuries in the house (which is why there’s several shown in saltburn) to show off their position/favor in proximity to the monarchy. It’s just more context in the movie to show how old money and established their family is. Just some of the weird things you learn when your mother wants you to marry into the gentry but you just like historical dramas, lol. And Saltburn itself is actually a registered historic home in the UK, for those curious, it’s named Drayton House.

Saltburn feels like the oligarchy's answer to The Menu and Parasite. Where the protag already comes from a comfortably wealthy family and just comes off as greedy and envious of his much wealthier, well respected and charismatic classmate by the end. He turns out to be weirder than the weird rich people that take him in and materializes the rich's greatest fear, of being preyed upon and killed by someone poorer and more desperate/lacking in moral charactor than them. Someone one of them let into their inner circle. The rich family doesn't even seem to be using their wealth for evil or the wrong reasons (outside of throwing lavish parties that could be used for good causes ,but isn't that just standard fair for the rich anyway?) but the protag kills them all anyway. Not for the greater good of society. Not to avenge all the poor people they stepped on in amassing their ill gotten gains. Not to undo wealth inequality or systems of opression. But out his own personal gripes and desire for a more lavish life. Not out of necessity and basic survival but just plain greed. Which in that framing, what makes him any better than the wealthy people he just killed? He's not trying to be a Robinhood, he just wants their lifestyle and the legitimacy that entitles you to that lifestyle. All that happend is that one middle class person whose definitely going to be corrupted by money and power is going to be just as bad and weird if not worse than the wealthy family he just replaced and swindled. Which is an argument only an oligarch would use to justify why redistribution of wealth would be moot and ineffectual and why its pointless to disrupt the status quo. This movie is a cautionary tale for rich people who want to keep their status in society. it's not a working class revenge fantasy in the slightest.
@elleofhearts8471
@elleofhearts8471 5 месяцев назад
also, it doesnt help that the protag lied about how poor he actually was and the stock he comes from because he wanted to emotionally manipulate (and possibly guilt?) the rich family by trying to appear more sympathetic and as an underdog. Which is what the super rich already think poor and middle class people do. They already believe poor people are exaggerating and aren't as bad off as we say we are and can't be trusted because we're all just lying out of jealousy and greed anyway.

Yes exactly! And for me your point is illustrated by the big gaping hole in the story: Why does Oliver want any of this anyway? The movie seems to take it as a given that of course he wants what they have, because they're the best people and they told him he can't. But why? To attend parties with people he hates and have a huge useless house that's freezing in the winter and sweltering in the summer and is probably a black hole money pit for all the repair and upkeep it must take to keep a building that old standing? Oliver doesn't seem have political ambitions, he's not in a precarious social situation, he doesn't seem to WANT anything. Even his fixation on Felix as a motive is completely undermined by the end when the movie implies he planned it all along. So... why? The fact that saltburn doesn't even attempt to answer that question is revealing. Of course everyone wants what they have. That's what makes the premise of this movie so terrifying.
@elleofhearts8471

@LS-hp5or Thats a good ass question. Saltburn isnt big on self reflection or personal growth, from what I see from kennie's review. Even after damn near 20 years after the meat of the movie, the protag hasnt realized that his desire to be someone he's not will be his ultimate undoing or that he might be biting off more than he can chew. In those 15 years, he doesnt realize that the best things in life are free, or that its lonely at the top or that life has so much more to offer that doesnt involve being unthinkably wealthy. Like healthy and intimate relationships, overcoming personal challenges and achieving personal fulfillment, making others happy and helping them to reach their dreams, service to others, etc. (bc lets be real, you can be a 1%er and still go to your grave never having experienced any of that) the protag is so blinded by material wealth that he doesnt even consider the life the rich family live is pretty hollow or learn from their mistakes (he's like the opposite of howard from Pearl in this way) . They dont actually treasure anything. Everything is disposable because their level of wealth can buy anything. Their lives are void of depth and meaning. Every decision they make, no matter how big or small, is inconsequential because if they dont get the outcome they want, they can just fix it with money. Maybe having so much money that reality bends around you and your whims actually isnt healthy. Protag never considers that or what he has to lose tho. As if to say he doesnt have anything worth keeping at all if he doesnt have wealth. the movie treats it like its just a given that theres nothing better than being ridiculously rich just because the 1% wouldnt trade being rich for anything in the world even with all the baggage that comes with wealth, so why wouldnt poor people trade everything just to be where they are too. As if wealth is the ultimate in everything. (Even though the protag's classmate is also well respected and charismatic aside from being wealthy. money cant buy a winning personality, talent, or genuine connections, all things protag also lacks.)(it wouldve been an interesting twist to see nate from euphoria isnt actually all the things protag made him out to be and it was the halo effect and money projecting that persona onto him so protag was envious of a mirage the whole time) in order to never reflect for a moment throughout and after that whole experience and all the murder/death, I feel like the protag must have never had a conscience or definite morals even before he got to oxford. He certainly didnt grow a conscience after 15 years. At least rich people can cite "affluenza" as to why theyre shitty people. protag wasnt wealthy after those 15 yrs so he has nothing to blame for why hes still so unscrupulous a decade and a half later after being removed from all proximity to that level wealth. Protag didnt go to therapy, he didnt do any introspection, he didnt overcome any of the worst aspects of his identity. Hes just an opportunist (kinda like a parasite 😉) that never questions whats motivating his desires or decisions. He just sees a chance and takes it, without a second thought. Are we to assume he was always like this even before oxford? or are we to conclude that proximity to wealth is irresistibly seductive and the thirst for money never truly goes away even if it lies dormant for a decade and a half? That wealth and privilege truly have no competition? its like the protag is a straw man that affirms rich people that their fear of the working class as a credible threat is valid and justified because being rich is totally awesome and not overrated in any way and anything the working class have cant compare to what wealth can provide and the poor know that even if they dont even know what having an immense amount of wealth is like or the baggage that come with it. Thats why you have to keep the poor poor and why you need to stay rich, because once the working class get a taste of the good life, theyll cut your throat to keep the money flowing. This whole movie exists just to affirm the rich that everything they already think about the working class is correct and that theres no need to reevaluate or reconsider these fears or prejudices because doing so could mean death and loss of generational wealth, the most awesomest thing of all as everyone knows, rich or poor. Its like this movie is supposed to be a cautionary tale to rich people. And just like cautionary tales, it has little to no nuance and gets a lot of things wrong about the lesson its trying to teach. Protag comes off as such a boogeyman. But hes only a boogeyman to the person whose worst fear is that a poorer person will infiltrate their inner circle and take their family's generational wealth. Which is the worst thing a rich person can experience, as everyone knows.

About Oliver talking poorly about Pamela to Elspeth....I interpreted it as being his way of having an "in" with Elspeth for trust and eventual manipulation. Elspeth is a shallow gossip, so Oliver wanted to show her that he can be one too.

I believe one of the reasons the story feels incomplete is because the story is being told from Oliver’s point of view and from the get go he is shown to be an unreliable narrator. I believe, in hindsight while telling his story, he wants to be seen like a mastermind. Someone who had a plan all along, but really Oliver was led fully by impulse and opportunity. As far as the build up to the bathtub scene, I do think there was foundation there. I see it as him finally succumbing to the depravity of his obsession which I believe he doesn’t understand. What he feels for Felix is beyond romantic and sexual, it is a need to be close. To be one. And in that moment, he is submitting to whatever his heart desires and he desires to consume Felix. So to me, it made sense that it would build up there. Great reaction! I really love this movie because there is so much subtext built in the text itself that adds depth to what we are presented.
@kyletheresa
@kyletheresa 5 месяцев назад
Completely agree with this and other sentiments like it. If you actually look at him as more of an unreliable narrative, you can start to really see (upon second watch) where the truth and Oliver's story collide. ESPECIALLY when they go to see his parents and his mom drops the little number of him "always trying to distance himself" and alluding to him always wanting to be the only child and not making friends. She tries to push it off that "they were just jealous" but when you see the dad's reaction, he clearly knows his son is a sociopath. I wholeheartedly believe that is the truth, and that Ollie wanted a different life... a better life, but --- to Kennie's point of the narrative not feeling incomplete. The question is left up to the audience guessing why, when it truly feels like we see the answer through Felix's last look of sadness and concern for Oliver's parents' desperation of trying to connect with Oliver or excuse him. There is no reason... Oliver just doesn't have the range or capacity to care so he'll say or do anything to disengage... hence Felix saying "Ollie just take a pill or something for Christ sake."

At first I thought he was projecting his own insecurities onto Oliver in the beginning bc of his constant hostility, but as the movie progressed it seems like his suspicions of him wasn’t really unfounded. I think the reason it’s important Elspeth mentions she fears ugliness bc her people are leaving or dying in ugly ways so she avoids again and again the ugly but real conversations that you would normally have. Even when felix dies and you see Elspeth is falling apart but she doesn’t want to talk about it bc it’s an ugly conversation. And our main guy is all too happy to play into that and talk about anything else, giving her a lot of comfort in a way. He manipulated her in a way where he’s “not like other people” and is soothing and calming her her as you see her mental decline

I was confused at why they were mad that farleigh was doing coke, when i looked it up Felix died of a cocaine overdose. He wasn’t poisoned, Oliver drugged the alcohol with cocaine to get rid of farleigh for good.
@AndSoWeLaughed
@AndSoWeLaughed 5 месяцев назад
Drugging someone is poisoning them. I thought the exact same though, and Ollie knew what he was doing because he did it. The only flaw with this (fault of the writer) was that we don’t know this or we don’t know that the family know this yet. He’s being taken away to go to a coroner to determine cause of death. I know it’s the only rational decision but it’s also annoying.
@acemyname

my takeaway was that oliver is an unreliable narrator and because we’re seeing everything from his perspective it’s going to come across unrealistic and confusing at certain points, the very first thing we hear him say is a lie and that definitely sets the tone for the rest of the story to me it feels obvious that taking over saltburn was never oliver’s initial intention, but making elspeth believe that in the end made him feel powerful and in control of his story, we see him mess with felix’s bike but that was just him wanting to get close to felix, same with learning all that stuff about the family and saltburn in order to be able to make conversation with felix’s parents, but things just became progressively more unraveled and the breaking point was felix finding out the truth about oliver’s family and upbringing because their friendship was over and felix was going to make oliver leave, oliver didn’t see any other way to hold onto everything he had grown accustomed to and all of the relationships he had put effort into at saltburn in order to please people in keep them interested, so he chose to poison and kill felix in the hopes that amidst their grief the rest of the family would keep oliver close and become more vulnerable to him and so on and so forth

31:46 how i took this scene was that El herself was already feeling this way to some degree, or at the very least was slightly uneasy about Pamela, so Oliver picked up on it (which i had by this point as well), and purposefully said this to gain favour with El and validate HER in any way possible, and make her think he was smart and insightful, but also make her trust him and believe him when he had negative feelings about other people or said things later on that could’ve been doubted, since he IS a relative stranger at this point. it’s part of why she seems to have a soft spot for him later on, she started to actually like him a bit more than her other “collectible” people. hell, by the time the 3rd act starts she almost seems to cling to him in a way because he was the same age as her kids, and was the last person who was with them in the before. obviously whether this attachment was true motherly feelings or not is dubious at best, but i do think it worked well in the long run as it helped the end of the movie happen.

I love to read all the different takes on this movie. I'll leave mine here. To me, it was all about Oliver's obsession with Felix. His plan from the beginning was to get close to Felix, to establish a connection. I do think he loved him in his own obsessive way. When Oliver enters Oxford he is an outsider, Despite being smart and diligent none of this earns him people attention; Felix is totally the opposite, of course, a significant part of his infatuation with Felix is due to Felix's privileged background. It's this upper-class upbringing that allows Felix to be carefree and charming, to effortlessly gain everyone's affection and love. Felix is only troubled by the fact that too many people love him, I supposed that's part of the "comfort" he found in Oliver like Venetia said. Felix's "compassion" is a trait Oliver exploits. This kindness, seemingly pure, also appears condescending, we could say it's "saviour complex" observing a human tragedy up close, sighing with both sympathy and satisfaction knowing he can be the hero that saves them, Felix and his mother feed from the lives of the "Unfortunates", they treat them like pets., they dress them, feed them, care for them, but until lose interest just as quickly (Pamela, Oliver even Farleigh). Oliver knows what type of person Felix would be interested in, knows what role would gain Felix's attention and friendship. So, he holds onto this character tightly, he also knew that Felix wouldn't gave him what he wanted do he found other ways to take it from him (the bathtub, venetia, Farleigh even the grave) Unfortunately, the moment of rejection came earlier than expected. Felix wanted to help Oliver reconcile with his family, inadvertently exposing the carefully crafted lies. when Oliver fully understands there's no turning back in his relationship with Felix, that Felix won't forgive him, finds him disgusting, no longer considers him a friend-that's when he made the choice to end Felix. In his mind, he preferred Felix to be d34d than not being able to be with him. He k_3d the lover he couldn't keep and replaced him with Saltburn, shifting the focus of his obsession to the only thing he had left to worship: Felix. I think he genuinely regretted k1_llng him, and his way of coping was to live, worship, and own the remaining pieces of Felix's life in Saltburn. To chase his Ghost and live with regret, it's his form of self-punishment. As emerald said for GQ magazine “I think it's a happy ending, [but] the happiest ending [for Oliver] would of course be with him and Felix married, living there together,” she continues. “I think that in his mind, and in my mind, that would be the dream. That dream is not possible. So, therefore, this is the best of a bad bunch of options.”

Totally agree with your criticisms with the off the wall scenes not having the necessary rationale; I had the feeling coming out of this movie that maybe main beats of the story had been changed part way through. Scenes felt like they existed for the sake of existing. The twist of Oliver plotting everything was also not quite built up properly to be a good twist. Like you said, wild behavior just kind of started happening- then we learn at the end that everything was one giant, evil, slow burn plot. A good twist makes everything make even more sense once you know; it makes you go, "how could I not have seen this coming?" but Saltburn's "build-ups" and reveal just felt like 🤨
@tarotsushima3332
@tarotsushima3332 5 месяцев назад
I think this is the reason why plot twists have started to get grating recently. It's supposed to shock you yes, but you're supposed to have the hindsight of "How the hell did I miss all of that?" And not "Why the hell did that happen?" Too many of them work to shock or get a gotcha in the audience instead of letting the story make narrative sense.

someone else in the comments alr interpreted the runny eggs thing, but to try and answer your questions about some other unclear aspects: felix does almost discard oliver like a plaything that he gets tired of right after the scene where they hang out in the dorms and oliver picks up/cleans felix‘s room which rubs the latter the wrong way. i think one of the reasons why oliver decides to lie about his father‘s death is to lure felix back in. and the cousin fingering is probably mentioned to further allude that there is some incest-y vibe in this family, especially between felix and venetia given how upset he is when oliver hooks up with her (also, another scene where venetia mentions lord byron and his umm relationship with his sister lmao), but that‘s just how i would analyze it

42:21 the “devil statue” is actually a statue of the Minotaur from the Greek mythology of icurus. Icurus’s father Dedulus was tasked to make a labyrinth (like the garden maze) to keep the Minotaur in so it wouldn’t escape and destroy the city. The king also trapped dedulus in that labyrinth hoping that he would die there and so would the secret of the Minotaur. Dedulus finds a way out and that’s when he builds a pair of wings for he and his son to escape (which if you look you’ll see the juxtaposition between Felix and Icarus (the wings and golden color/ both being the golden child to their parents). Felix taking the drink was his “flying too close to the sun” moment. Also the other statue you mentioned was a depiction of Samson defeating an army with the jawbone of an ass (it was foreshadowing of overcoming insurmountable odds to gain victory)

According to the British laws of primogeniture, Farleigh should become lord of the manor. The closest male relative inherits both Saltburn and title that goes with it. Elspeth couldn't give the estate to Oliver because according to the law, it wasn't hers to give away. Emerald Fennel is upper class so she should have known.that. Long live Lord Farleigh! THEN skipping through the trailer bc the movie started in 5 mins and I was BORED by the trailer! 🤕 When I say I was surprised at all fronts, I WAS!!! THIS MOVIE WAS AMAZINGLY WILD!!!!

Responding to your point around 31:48 I think that Oliver's motivation for messing with Elspeth is to see how much control he can exert over them. He wants to test the waters and see how well he can manipulate them. I think initially this was how he planned on staying at Saltburn and integrating himself into the family, by controlling them through manipulation. He doesn't want to hurt them at first.

Also: the egg thing also reeked of purposeful manipulation to me, like he's testing how much control he can have. He asked for this thing, he got it, and then he's like "no, that's not what I want."

The line from Oliver’s weird friend at Oxford about “Felix will just get sick of you” does come back around somewhat at saltburn - I can’t remember who says it but someone says to Oliver something like you’re better than the friend from last summer, but I do wish that thread had been pulled on a little more. Great recap! I can’t wait for more in-depth videos. I also read American Psycho after being obsessed with the movie for awhile and yeah…yeah…😅🙃😵‍💫

I think Oliver was mesmerized by Felix and wanted to be truly loved by him, so he became obsessed and did whatever he could to not be pushed aside by Felix. Early in the movie, there's a scene in which Felix doesn't invite him to the pub because he starts to realize that Oliver is a bit much for him (too clingy), and then Oliver creates the story about his parents to make Felix feel bad for him and take him in again. Later, when everyone keeps telling Oliver about how Felix discards people once he's done with them, I think it's supposed to be a trigger and reinforce Oliver's fear of being left behind. Even though they develop a friendship, Felix is very free-spirited and clearly is more interested in having a good time than anything else. Up until this point, Oliver is doing whatever he can to become loved and valued by the whole family, in order to gain a permanent place in their lives. When Oliver has been definitely pushed aside, he sees how easy it is to be discarded by that world and that all of his efforts were for nothing, so he pulls an "if I can't be with you then I'm gonna be you", and cuts everyone out of his way.

I really enjoyed this movie. I like that when Oliver does arrive at the castle, it does give the suspicion that the family might be culty. But Oliver was always showing signs of obsession. When he watches Felix from outside his dorm on day one, to zoning in on him in a crowded pub or cafeteria, let alone watching him get with a girl. Once he arrives at Saltburn his motives were extremely apparent in my opinion. He was manipulating everyone to liking him, down to impressing Sir James about his knowledge to gossiping with Elsabeth about Pamela. It was all to get close to gain their wealth and he didn’t care to lie to do it. In regards to everyone warning Oliver that he’s just “another one of Felix’s toys” I don’t think it’s as straightforward as it seems. Instead what happened was, when Oliver was caught in his lie (to manipulate Felix) Felix was done with his friendship/ which then Oliver took as the literal “throwing away”. He wasn’t able to realize that Felix wants nothing to do with him because he’s a liar, but took it more as “he’s done with him” which he did say a few times in the film. Which I think then ultimately took Oliver to murdering him. It 1) kept his lie a secret from the rest of the family so he can keep onward with his goal, and 2) to abandoning Felix before Felix would abandon him. He killed Venetia before she could spill the truth too. It’s honestly a pretty good film, I’d rate it a 8/10

The things you are saying weren't earned are actually explained but in a offhand way. Oliver Quick's name is in itself a clue - its a play on Oliver Twist from Dickens and reminiscent of Becky Sharp from Vanity Fair. In those books, the name of the character is a clue to the morals and qualities of the person. Oliver is named as being Quick. AKA a clever person. We get information about his past from his parents - he always wanted to be special, an only child, lies about his accomplishments. Also regarding the family, Oliver manipulates them all through lies, sex, and appearances. We are distracted by Felix's looks, but in reality, he is as vain, careless, and causally cruel as his mother. Felix picks up people as distractions, as toys and then discards them. The mother does the same. Venita is desperate for someone to see her. At the same time as she is wasting away through not eating - she is a ghost compared to the rest of her family. The family are all users, narcissistic and self-absorbed. Oliver is just better at it - that is the point of his last speech where he says - none of you knew how to work, he knew how to get into the family and as Venitis says - eat them up from the inside.

First, i wanna say that prior to this movie i had no idea what it was about. The internet lied to me several times about this. The tumblr girlies were making it seem like an artsy gay summer fling that ends with them never seeing each other again with as much venom as a bitter divorce. RU-vid prior to its release made it seem about culty hedonism shit. The promotional posters made it seem like a murder cult. And watching this video and second hand learning all the scenes that would have absolutely ruined my day gives this weird aftertaste of not relief or disappointment but just sitting like, "Well...that happened"

Yesss thank you I have the same critiques… we never got an explanation on why the protagonist was the psycho and obsessive person he was and that bothered me. Also we were told stuff like “you are one of Jacob Elordi’s toys, he will be bored of you and throw you away” but we were not shown that as well.. I mean show me don’t just tell?! Also there seems to be an attraction over Oliver’s character by some people .. and the actor by extension.. for example people saying “but when he did that it was kinda hot” and I’m left feeling like… how can you get anything but an ick while watching him in the movie I don’t get it at all?

Saltburn was giving The Talented Mr. Ripley vibes for me regarding the bromance-sexual-tension-enters-obsession dynamic. (TTMR spoilers ahead) Talented Ripley also has a (very tame in comparison) bathtub scene that makes it clear to the viewer that Tom's (i.e. Oliver's) obsession of Dickie (i.e. Felix) is more than friendly. Tom also gets into a romantic entanglement with a woman who dated Dickie (v. diff circumstances but ya know) and loses who he is in some fashion in the vapid world of rich folks who don't truly care for him, which he lied to get into. Plus Tom doesn't handle the exposure of his lies very well, either. If you know what I mean LOL

( just a theory) Many people bring up the themes of desire obsession, & wealth. In both blog breakdowns, movie reviews, & discussion in these comments. But I don’t see many discuses the theme of trust. In this case, distrust or mistrust. We know about Oliver but what about the other characters? Felix leaves one questioning his character, with how we see how he values the platonic/ romantic relationships in his life. Engaging sexually with India but disregarding her emotionally & the mentioning of Eddie and other Ex bestfriends of Felix. Farleigh leaves one wondering if he’s a friend or foe by display of his frenemy like behavior, snide remarks, shade, beguiling smile, and schemes. Elspeth’s overt sharing of private and intimate information, her saying one thing but meaning another, shedding of personal blame, & disregard for Pamela. Professors ware’s discussion with Farleigh, formulating himself to have known Farleigh’s mother personally, soon revealing that he wasn’t a friend but a distant admirer that Farleigh’s mother might’ve never known existed. Lastly, the butler, you don’t know if he dislikes Oliver or not, just that he’s doing his job regardless of demeanor.

I just watched Saltburn and knew practically nothing about it. I feel like the people who were shocked watched it in a theater with other people, because for me streaming it at home, it wasn't shocking at all. I think "shocked" is code for "pretending in front of other people" perhaps. It felt weird to me to read all of the IMDB stuff and then news reports after watching it. And, I don't think the main character doing that made any sense, either, in the context of the movie.The movie seemed like a much worse version of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" combined with the original "Brideshead Revisited."

might be a hot take but i don’t think oliver ever obsessed over felix for any reason other than desperately wanting his life. in the scene with his parents, we’re told that he couldn’t make friends- and i think a more fascinating interpretation on that fact, is maybe due to being in a rather middle to lower class neighbourhood, he never wanted friends as they didn’t have anything he desired. this thought gave me the idea of ollie doing his absolute Best to obtain the scholarship, to one of the most prestigious colleges in the uk, surrounding himself with the upper class, with the sole intent of seeking out a life he wanted to live. everyone has their own theories and reads on this movie and it’s just so cool how differently the film comes across with each interpretation in mind. 😊

"Do I want to be with them" (I love him) or "do I want to be them" (I'm not in love with him) are very close feelings and a very hard line to define sometimes. I think Oliver was obsessed to the point of wanting to be Felix. Even before he knew where Felix lived. He couldn't let Felix get away from him because of his level of obsession. When he couldn't have Felix (his worst fears were coming true, Felix knew the truth and wanted to be away from Oliver) he killed him and finished inserting himself into Felix's life. Within the context of the movie though, there were some things that I felt were weird. The movie is trying to convince me that Oliver was overhearing a lot of conversations that I don't actually he would have had the ability to overhear. Then when the family finds Felix, everyone just walked up and went oh, hes dead. Like no one checked pulse or tried CPR. The dad was the closest by talking about him being cold. Sure, a dead body is a dead body, but depending on the situation it's found in, I think a lot of people look closer to see if someone is breathing or has a pulse before just walking up and being like yup, hes dead. And Felix is kind of an asshole for taking Oliver to see his mom who as far as he has been led to believe, Oliver has some form of trauma around.
