This mod has all the subtlety of a brick to the face. Twitter: / jollywangcore Twitch: / jollywangcore Mod: www.moddb.com/mods/nightmare-... End song: Half-life OST - Closing theme.
This video is sponsored by windows 10 and it’s fantastic update system that resets all your audio settings without you knowing, making your audio sound like absolute garbage. Also just clarifying quickly. "Why did the Office prank scare you and not nightmare house?" Because one was a well crafted slow burn horror experience I wasn't expecting. The other was a never ending trope filled cluster fuck that ticked about every horror cliche box it could and NEVER slowed down. That being said, just because I took the piss while playing it doesn't mean it was bad. Nightmare house is quite possibly the BEST horror mod of its time and more than achieved what it set out to do. The developers were clearly catering to the RU-vid horror audience and they pretty much nailed it in both execution and concept. My dumb internet video's aren't indicative of my overall opinion of a mod.
My favorite part is how Realtek forgot to move their driver downloads to their new page. Now I’m stuck with “High Definition Audio Driver” That doesn’t understand how bass boost works
SomeFurryGuy it is an ironic nod to theories surrounding 9/11, they said it is impossible for it not to be an inside job because jet fuel can’t melt steel beams and some charges or shit had to be planted there earlier and from the inside
This mod is very old and pioneered a lot of the techniques that now feel overused in mods like this. I remember playing this back in high school and showing it off to all of my friends due to how unusual it was for a mod to have the level of quality this has.
I'd watch a series like this. Something Johnny Bravo-like, dude on a terror scenario, multi-dimentional undead-thing girl trying to kill him, and he's just constantly trying to hit up on her to get her number. That would be as funny like Jolly playing this!
@@sydney_pepper *shrug* We all have our different tolerances for scary. I do wonder if a certain amount of it is that it was scary "for its time." Remember that this came out before the Slenderman youtuber craze that drove the creation of so many horror games afterwards; I swear a lot of them took inspiration from here. It's like the FNAF problem: when you look at the components, there's no reason the sequels should be less scary than the first; they're built very similarly. But that's the problem: we grew used to its tricks and it became less scary from our perspectives.
@@davidrivero1755 Very true! You have to feel for the modern media creators. They have a lot of work to learn from, but the bar for being "great" or "the best" just travels higher and higher.
@@steveradroach9101 to be honest, then that's because jolly actually helped us build a proper connection to the bay to the point where we'd propably love seeing him do his best to take it with him throughout the whole game. the kind of connection that bethesda didn't bother with other than saying "Your character is a dad to this child, therefor YOU must now go save it"
@@Edgariki Maybe because when this mod was created, we were all drooling idiots in our early adolesence or starting to go through puberty. But given this is a youtube comment section, most people reading this probably weren't born 11 or so years ago.
Yo, despite everything being filled with tropes and predictable stuff, It seems like the creator put a lot of work into it. definitely one of the better mods out there.
@@grimjudgment6527 the interaction with the npc's and their "personalities" are good tho, i remember watching a playthrough of this mod a couple years ago, and every one had kinda of his own personality, i guess this was biased because the youtuber that played it created some personalities to them by giving them names and "talking" with them, but they where good bois
@@arsenii_yavorskyi it can be shited on, like it was a really good mod in his time, but it hasn't aged well since the amount of people that played the mod in his time was very little in comparison with the amount of exposure that the more modern cliché games had this past few years, like fnaf, slenderman and the movies full of screamers with zero tought put in to it, even this game had "little" of them in comparison of other games that i've watched, also, i don't even remember another game that wasn't somewhat new with the mannequin mechanic that was that unsettling at the time this was out, it's just that whe are to filled up of those things, and also the game is a example of a genere that at the time was very young and inmature
@@300Darkwater is he a dick for being unsatisified with the product or a dick for expecting AAA studio results from a larger team of talented moders that could have made something better with a bit more effort?
The fact he didn’t take it seriously the entire time makes the hidden map so much better, because it’s like the mod finally giving up and not taking itself seriously
It's a GOOD mod but it's not a SCARY mod. He's not ruining it intentionally. He's just not scared. Don't be a bunch of pussies and just take the video as is.
@@FleyDragon because your "hating" when really you are completely right. Back in the day this mod was some of the creepiest shit in Gmod. Obviously we will think of it differently now than how we did then. No need to bash the mod -.-
Honestly for all the tropes in this it's actually kinda refreshing at this point in the outbreak trope for the military guys sent in to clear the place out to not just be there to kill everything that moves on sight lol
NaNiBy it's decently made I suppose, I mean I quite like the premise of it and the ending with Emily and that other guy was quite tense (not the secret one, but the one that happens when you destroy the core) and the SWAT members were funny. But it's VERY cliché, and a lot of the effects were laughable as fuck.
5:43 they were testing some experimental exploding beds of u want to wake rlly early in the morning and getting ready to got to work or school or even jobs
if anyone is watching this in 2020. This mod isn't scary because all the tropes we know now are way overdone. At the time this mod was released these tropes were not saturated like they are now
That's genuinely because he was distracted by twitch and refused to sink in. When you're not on your own and don't see anyone reply to your actions in a horror game, it just simply gets like this. He didn't give the game a chance by being simply distracted.
I went in knowing what to expect. The rate of jumpscares was fucking astonishing. After the first few it's less "when is it going yo happen" and more "here it comes". There was zero "subversion of expectations" everything you think a horror game is going to do it does. It was great for it's time sure but it's aged poorly. So I just started having fun...
Yeah, back when it was first made (what was it, around 10 years ago now?) this legit scared me. Hell, even now you can tell there was actual effort that went into making this. Is it scary now? Fuck no, but it isn’t a flaming sack of shit like so many other mods
Despite the high frequency of jumpscares this mod, in its entirety (without the cuts) and in comsparison to many other horror-mods this one is well made and has a decent length (!). Of course it's funny to watch in this video, but if you love horror-mods you should definitely check it out for yourself! Has to be at least in the Top 20 horror-mods for Half-Life.
In this episode, Jolly tries to impress girls, meets dabbing zombies in a hip-gyration hospital where every dance sensation is infectuous! Also, the MSCG, the Mannequin Slapstick Comedy Group is here.
I'm honestly curious as to how many of the people watching this video even got that reference, since I just realized how old that video really is, and the age of the average RU-vid user. Some of them may be too young to get it, others might not even have been born at the time that Amazing Horse was relevant.
You don't say buddy, that was one of the first Markiplier's videos I ever saw waaaay back, when he had like 10k subs. Weebl was the sh*t back then. Damn, the nostalgia trip is strong with this one.
I remember seeing Necroscope86 and someone else playing this mod years and years ago, wow, brings back some good memories from when I first started watching youtube, cheers to you mate for making such a great video!
@@100dead I agree with you, Criken still has his moments. Aah, I know this isn't a recent one at all but don't forget about the tales of Capt'n andy trout.
@@americantemplar6553 those aren't the stock HL2 zombie sounds, so it could very well be sounds they made for the mod where the zombie says "yeah boi." I mean, it sounds a heck of a lot like it
