So Many Swatches!!🧶In Search of the Perfect Vintage 3 Ply Yarn for Vintage Knitting

It's time for an experiment! The most common yarn weight suggested for vintage knitting patterns is 3 ply. But today very few mills still make 3 ply. So I decided to try and find some modern yarns that will work for vintage patterns.

This was such an informative video - I learned so much! I always wondered how close we could get to vintage 3 ply with modern yarns and it was fascinating seeing some of the substitutions I've used and how they compared to others. I'll have to get my hand on some Jawoll! Also, love all the jumpers you're wearing in this video and the ones you have planned. Of course, beyond excited for you knitting machine adventures, too!

I can't sing the praises of Shetland Heritage yarn by Jamieson and Smith enough: it is explicitly a recreation of the pure wool yarn used in early 20th century fair isle knitting. All vintage solid colours, knits up to 3-ply, available online and not too expensive.

Yes, basically all our yarn is loosely plied, even the really expensive stuff. It's because knitting is considered something you do to make HomeGoods like blankets or heirloom stuff like baptism gowns, not actual wearable garments. Also because a lot of yarns rely on the acrylic content to cling to itself.

_Small suggestion for the vintage yarn labels_ - Frame them. That way they get preserved for the grandkids and they get to continue to exist outside of a rubbish bin. I'll be doing this myself on a vintage, still in the waxed wrapper, Barbour thread I'll be using for saddle stitching leatherwork (as if sewing hadn't already blown through the space & storage 'budget'). Thanks for the video. Very informative. I'm still refuse to take up knitting. Partially because Mister Husband is a Vocational Deacon in the Anglican Church. I won't knit and I won't work for free. That's my deal with myself... {laughing} - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

I've heard excellent things about Bendigo, but it's so expensive. I'm lucky to have a secondhand haberdashery near me that I can get a lot of very cheap things, but it does mean that you can't plan for anything, and just deal with whatever they've had donated.

Brilliant video and thank you for solving a long-standing mystery 🙌- I've before never seen anyone cast on | cast off in the same way I do! The O in Lopi is more like the O in 'low' and the I is more like the I in 'is'. The 'ei' in einband is like the fonzes 'ey', just the short version of it. We usually use einband for things like socks. Because then we can use non spinned wool and the ienband gives it a bit of strength.

Hi Claude, in case you’re interested, Bendigo Woolen Mills in Australia carries classic 3ply 100% wool in 500gr cone for AUD38 (about £22). Of course you need to factor in the shipping cost. It says 32sts with 3mm needles. Hope it helps.

@@historical.isolde7918 I've been really happy with Bendigo Woolen Mills, although so far I've only tried their cotton. They sent me some beautiful shade cards for free, and I can't wait to visit them in person later this year. I also love Nundle Wool Mills for their wonderful affordable sock yarn - great for colourwork because it comes in small balls so you don't have to commit to getting a huge ball of sock yarn just to do a bit of colour. Bellevue Park Wool 4 ply is also beautiful yarn in beautiful colours and imo very affordable - although it's pure wool and not superwash so if you aren't someone who is fine with handwashing your cardies it's not the best choice.

I love these kind of experiments!! I'm rather partial to Jamieson & Shetland's Heritage yarns for vintage patterns. For me it works for a 3-ply tension on 2.75 mm needles (I'm a loose knitter) and although it is 2-ply it is worsted spun (unlike J&S Jumperweight). In the 25g skeins it would work out more expensive than your £5/50g budget but I save for a 500g cone in one of my 'go to' colours for several garments and then it works out at £3.80/50g. Have you considered West Yorkshire Spinner's 4-ply Signature? I get closer to a 3-ply tension on that than a 4-ply and I like its tightly spun nature. Also, it's soft (to me) but wears and wears. Re the Jawoll, I like the feel of the yarn when it knits up but in my experience (for what it's worth) I am not impressed with how it washes and wears. I'd like to try the CaMaRose as it's 100% natural, organic and the colour range has a pretty but muted vintage (rather than baby pastels) feel to me.
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 2 года назад
I have tried West Yorkshire Spinners! I completely forgot about it for this video because I only had half balls left and no yarn band. I've only used it for socks so I'll have to try it for 3 ply tension too. Thanks for all the suggestions. Particularly the tip about the J&S cones! I've got a fair isle twin set I'd like to make which needs a lot of yarn so that seems like a great choice!

I realize I’m very late, but I just wanted to add a few things. I don’t know how Palette compares to internationally available yarns, but I’m american and I would definitely consider it looser than normal. I’ve used it several times and you won’t get a nice crisp stitch definition. What it does really well is color work and it steeks nicely. You probably won’t find 3mm needles sold by themselves here in the US, but some needle sets include them. My DPN set from knitpicks has them. Regia sock yarn makes lovely, hard-wearing, socks. I think the first pair I made for my husband lasted at least 5 years before I darned them. Nobody gets row gauge, like ever lol. Awesome video and I can’t wait to finish catching up!

I'm an American and a newish knitter, advanced crocheter. Fingering weight is basically as close as I have ever seen to a genuine 3-ply that isn't acrylic "baby" yarn. I think the loose two ply spun yarn is pretty typical when using wool, although a lot of our indie dyers use fingering that is more like a true 3 ply yarn with more strands twisted together at the same thickness. The 75/25 wool /nylon yarns are about the best modern stand in for the 3 ply vintage you're looking for. If you order from knitpicks again I suggest using stroll or hawthorn. You might find you love them better. Happy stitching!

Susan Crawford has two yarns, Fenella and Excelana which were developed to be as close as possible to vintage yarns for her books, I'm not sure if you have tried those already, or if they are withing the budget you have, but the Fenella yarn works really nicely for colourwork and Fair Isle. I spin, so I found that helps me if I'm looking for an unusual size, or mix of fibres.

I hadn’t noticed that about the loose ply of American yarns. Just dove into my stash to have a look. They are not all like that, but many of the affordable ones are loose. The tightly plied ones tend to be the higher-end hand-dyed yarns. But then my stash is probably not a representative sample, because I do tend to favor stuff from the bargain bin. 😀

Thanks for putting all the work in for doing all of these tests! I'm consistently a tight knitter - I routinely go up 5 mm with needle size with everything I knit, and always do gauge swatches. It wouldn't fit into your affordable criteria but I bought Madelinetosh 80/20/10 fingering and found it to be a very fine four ply - certainly finer than any other sock or 4 ply yarn I've ever used. I'd definitely call it a 3 ply. Koigu KPPM is also on the thin side.

Also I find myself a bit frustrated when they only recommend grams rather than metreage in knitting patterns. I knitted a 1980s Shetland cardigan and of course the yarn had long-since been discontinued, so I had to do a substitution. I should have done Jamieson 2 ply jumper weight but at the time I didn't know about it, so I used alpaca. And I bought it by weight. Alpaca is a lot lighter than wool, apparently, so I ended up with something like 5 more balls than I needed, and it was EXPENSIVE.

Two-ply yarns tend to be flat, so they're good for lace, because it really allows the YOs to open up. Once you get into 3 plies or more, the yarns are rounder, and you get something more suitable for texture. (I don't tend to like the look of knitted fabric in 2-ply yarns, but that's probably because I'm just used to 3- and 4-ply yarns.) When my kids were little, I used a lot of Dale Baby Ull, which I had a gauge of 8 sts/in, and 4 actual plies. My recent vintage sweater (1940s) called for Beehive 3-ply, and the pattern called for 7.5 sts/in. I used an American yarn produced by Brown Sheep Company (they're a vertical mill, so they produce their own yarn, rather than using one of the huge commercial mills that produce yarns for lots of brands). Their Nature Spun yarn is a 3-ply, and comes in four different weights (fingering, sport, worsted, and chunky). What is interesting to me about this yarn is that it seems to ride the line between a worsted spun and woolen spun yarn. There is sooo much yardage (283 m/50 g for the fingering weight), and it blooms once it's washed. The label says 7 sts/in, but I worked it at 7.5 sts/in and it was completely fine. I wonder if firmer gauges might have been more common back then? A firmer gauge will fend off pilling and stretching out unlike the looser gauges seen so often in contemporary designs.

My yarn stash is probably at least 50% knitpicks palette by now, I use SO much of it. It does, as you posit in the swatch knitting section, even out nicely after washing/wet blocking. The loose twist is not my favorite, but when you're buying sweater quantities of yarn at the frequency that I do I have a hard time wanting to pay 2-3 times as much for the same amount of yarn to get that tighter twist.

American here, so I've only used two of these yarns, the Cascade 220 Fingering and the the Knit Picks Palette. The Palette I have no idea what my gauge is with that because I've only used it for my crocheted flower blanket. And for the 220 Fingering, I've only knit it on 2.25mm (US #1), for a cowl, and that was 10 stitches and 12 rows to the inch. o.o My gauge is so fine on that, and in stockinette, I don't think people realize it's hand made, so it's never gotten compliments. XD As for the spin on the yarns being so loose, I think it's more common for wool (?). I associate that tight spin like your vintage yarn more with synthetic yarns over here. Maybe it's cheaper that way? A less dense yarn means more yardage per gram?

I did a little poking around from the US side of things, and it is interesting to see most of the Neveda yarn that I could find being sold with the keyword 'vintage' attached to it. And I could not find the Socky/Pulli variety at all. I don't doubt that there is a market for 3ply style yarn but maybe there is a business reason as to why they are no longer selling their yarn internationally.

I started knitting in the early 1980s and got in deep ... including teaching and designing. I don't knit much any more (burn out), but I do keep up with American knitting trends. These days, I knit either my own designs or very sturdy hats and mittens. Not the same work as you do, but we share the same historic perspective. American yarn *is* very fluffy. Also, the recommended gauge is much looser than it used to be. For example, a 5 weight "knitting worsted" that in the 1980s would knit to a sturdy fabric at 5 sts per inch now would need to be knit at 5.5 or 6 sts per inch to get a sturdy fabric - but the label says 4 sts per inch! It's almost impossible for me to find the dense sturdy wool I want for mittens. [Bartlettyarns still carries it.]
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 2 года назад
Oooh interesting! Shrink-flation perhaps? They make the yarn less dense but keep the price the same so we don't notice?
@thegrynne
@thegrynne 2 года назад
They are slightly above your specified price range if you buy by the ball, but I suspect Holst Supersoft and JC Rennie Supersoft Lambswool would both meet your gauge specifications. They are described as 4ply, but I find them to be a light fingering/3ply, and if you purchase them by the cone they are very affordable.

Really interesting! I wonder if the quantity being wrong has to do with the pattern listing weight instead of yardage? Since different fibers weight different amounts they'd have a different yardage per gram.
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 2 года назад
I think that must be it. The vintage yarn doesn't have yardage on the band at all

As an American who buys very very cheap acrylic yarn (I've been making little dolls that sit on bookshelves, so fibre type hasn't been important) all of my yarn is two fluffy pieces twisted together. I've been confused whenever people talk vintage knitting and say things like three ply or four ply. I didn't know yarn could be that different! I didn't realize the fluffy two strand yarns were an American thing.

I feel like I've seen a few companies (chiagoo maybe?) that have a US2.5/3mm recently! I haven't had a chance to buy any yet but it looks like they're starting to exist. I've always been annoyed by the fact that the sizes increase inconsistently. ... Also annoyed by the fact that one of my needle size gauges says that a US 3 is a 3.125mm which, uh, no? But that's a whole other can of US needle size worms...

Hmm, all those yarns are still pretty pricey for me, at least where I live (including online shops) ;) For me, anything over 3 Euros for 50g is pricey (but I prefer cotton or cotton blend yarns, anyway, not fond of wool). A very interesting video, nevertheless! :) (You're way more meticulous with swatches than I am though, all I ever have patience for is a couple of rows that I then unravel after measuring, and that's it :D)

I know this from a few months ago but have you considered using a 1-ply lace and a 2-ply lace yarn held together? This should come out to a 3-ply fingering and be within your price range.

I do wish that yarn producers would bring back some of these lighter plys. I have always found 8 ply way to heavy and hot to wear, despite the south eastern Aussie climate I live in. But trying to find a 5 ply these days is almost impossible! Especially something affordable. Our equivalent for your 'cheaper' wool would be nearly $9 AUD, which would make a jumper for my size (plus) around $90. I blanche at spending $4 (£2.25) for 50g. And that is the common garden variety 8 ply. Home knitting has become a luxury and yet has such limited options now. Where is the 2 ply, 5 ply and 7 plys? And options in colours? Is it this difficult in the UK? Buying online has its own draw backs - can't feel the wool; see the accurate colour; and postage to Australia is exorbitant. Oh dear! All that aside, your video was really informative and helpful in finding a comparative yarn. Thank you!
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 2 года назад
I think it's slightly easier to find lighter weight yarns in the UK just because we still make quite a lot of yarn here. It's easier to find 'lace' weight yarn too because of the Shetland tradition but often you can only get it on cones.

Thank you for this video! Have you found any good sweater patterns for a sport weight yarn? My BFF & I both bought sweater quantities of sport weight yarn however the sweater pattern we purchased it for turned out to be a HORRIBLE pattern with gauge variations throughout (I typically wear a US 3XL & I was making a medium with the gauge still out) - now we're struggling to find a nice seamless (knit in the round) sweater pattern to use all of that yarn on...

I understand, the 3 ply, problem, the only ones that are easy to get are for baby knitting. I use 4 ply too and do math so I may follow a pattern size about 2 sizes smaller that to get the size I want to finish with. eg to get a 38inch bust in 4 ply follow the 32inch bust pattern.
