I see that Barrett's in-laws are of Hakka descent, hot pot however isn't a typical Hakka cuisine. Nevertheless, the practice of a year-end dinner with family members is indeed heartwarming, especially for those who return home for their annual reunion with their loved ones.

Chinese New Year nothing to do with lunar calendar

Lunar New Year is Muslim new year which is use lunar calendar, that is not Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is not lunar calendar. Chinese New Year is calculate solar calendar and lunar calendar together . You can say Happy Chinese solar lunar New year.

@@wendylan2614 You are wrong. Chinese calendar is lunar. The days we refer to each time is related to the phases of the moon. First day is no moon day and the fifteenth is full moon day. The fact we use extra intercalary month in some year to adjust to the solar cycle does not distract from the fact that it is a lunar calendar. The dates in Chinese and Western calendars will only repeat every 19, 19 and 18 years.

@@chualooong1737 no,Chinese new year is not lunar calendar, lunar calendar is 阴历， Chinese calendar is 农历，it is different things. 农历 is calculate solar and lunar, whi is calculate sun and moon day. Lunar only calculate moon day. No one in Chinese said happy 阴历（lunar）new year, every body know the difference and said happy 农历（solar and lunar）new year. and 农历 is farming calendar, which use for calculate the day for farming in ancient times.

Every culture have a day or days when the family comes together to eat and touch base. The west has Thanksgiving or Christmas. The Muslims have their Eid, the Hindus their Devali, the Jews their Hanukkah. The Chinese have Chinese New Year and mid-Autumn festivals which they have been celebrating for over 3,000 years. Spidey, I am Asian but live in the West. For Thanksgiving, I roast a turkey like what white people do. Is that bad? If it's not bad, maybe Hakka people can eat goose for Chinese New Year too.

@@RM-qw3xz You shouldn't celebrate Thanksgiving. You can eat 🦃any day except Thanksgiving day. It's a day to remember how the Native Americans were culturally destroyed by the settling whites. Plucking feathers and eat the meat. Native Americans used feathers to put onto their head to wear. Also, you have misunderstood spidey. He is talking about Chao Zhou or Teochew(dialect) where they will eat goose meat traditionally during CNY. Not in reference to Barrett who is British and especially Barrett's in laws are Hakkas where goose is not a traditional meat. My extended family is Chao Zhou and we ate goose during CNY. We also have meatballs (large) for CNY because my family is from Fuzhou.
