I'm with you, Mary. I know everyone will disagree, but as an old-timer, I prefer the rocking Rod Stewart from his days with The Faces and early solo material like "Maggie May". I still remember when that and "Mandolin Wind" were first on the radio. Those were the days when I got to lie on my bed late at night and listen to KMPX in SF play complete albums uninterrupted like "Led Zeppelin" and "Tommy" by The Who.

@ArgonTheAware

The melody is an adaptation of "Loch Lomond". The meter, stanzas and lyrics are also based on the poem, a nod to Stewart's own Scottish heritage, so it is tribute to soldiers who fought for Scottish independence like in Braveheart
@howardhales6325
@howardhales6325 Год назад
It's actually a Canadian song, written by Marc Jordan and John Capek. I heard it by Marc Jordan live in 2003. There's a lot of Scottish influence in Canada's east coast music scene. (Nova Scotia means "New Scotland," after all).
@ArgonTheAware
@ArgonTheAware Год назад
@@howardhales6325 But they used an obvious adaption of the melody and the Loch Lomond poem when they wrote it which in itself is a Jacobite adaptation of an eighteenth-century erotic song so the original ownership has been blurred many times, from Scotland, Ireland, England, probably Australia and New Zealand also

This is one of Rod Stewart's best of his later material. This song struck me as an ode to his native Scotland. The instrumentation and rhythms make this song a great singalong like Billy Joel's "Piano Man" even without it occurring near the end.

rod didn't write this song. it was sent to him. i listen to talk radio when i'm on hunting/hiking trips. one day, the guest was the guy who wrote this song. his people had sent it to rod, i don't even know if the guy was aware or not. well, one evening, he's sitting at the dinner table with his wife and the phone rings. his wife was like, 'no, your not taking this, we're eating'. he's 'i really have to take this i think'. he then has a great conversation with rod, about the song, etc. the line i remember from that, was that rod told him, "i can sing the F outta this song".

60s for me. First saw Rod in 1964, in the Bromel Club in the basement of The Bromley Court Hotel, in Bromley, near London. it was a great jazz, blues and the early days of UK R'n'B venue. He was the backing singer for his mentor, Long John Baldrey (and his band - The Hoochie Coochie Men). In those days, in clubs, the band played 2 sets. Long John's throat was playing up and for the 2nd set Rod took the vocals, along with the bass player (a black American guy called Paul Williams) who also had a great voice. Blew us all away. he'd been great in the first set, as a backing/harmony but on his own? Just magic. His single - 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl' came out some time later that year. I was back in Glasgow, by then and had to order it at a record shop in town - he was still pretty much unknown, away from London.

I fell in love with Rod Stewart's voice and music in 1972 as a 12-yr-old and have enjoyed that personal live affair for 50 years now. My favorite RS song is Mandolin Wind, a beautiful ballad he wrote "sung from the point of view of an aging farmer husband. The song is a tribute to his loyal wife who stays by his side during a horrendous winter on the farm." (per Songfacts) The lyrics are tender and beautiful. Other great RS songs to be enjoyed? Gasoline Alley, Handbags and Gladrags, Stay With Me, You Wear it Well, Reason to Believe, (I Know) I'm Losing You, I Was Only Joking, You're in My Heart. Etc! I finally got to see him in concert in my hometown in the mid-90s and that man is a true performer. He does not disappoint! If you get the chance to see him...do it! You will be glad you did. Blessings to you and your li'l family ♡♡♡

The song was definitely big with soliers in the military (and their families). However, the song was originally recorded by a Dutch artist in the mid 60s. Rod Stewart chose to cover the song on his 1992 album as a nod to his Scottish heritage because the melody is based on a Scottish folk song "Loch Lomond" (you could check out a great a capella cover of that done by Peter Hollens singing all the voice parts here on RU-vid and hear the similarities in the melody)

Like you, I love Rod’s distinctive, gravelly voice. You know Ros Stewart immediately. Would love to see your reaction to the Motown song. Reminds me of this song. Love your channel. Thanks for this. 👏👏🇨🇦

I left my love for Donny Osmond when I discovered Rod Stewart! The first time I saw him I was 12 in 1972 in OKC at the Fairgrounds Arena. It was awesome! He was a rocker back then! With Jeff Beck and the Faces and Ronny Wood etc... Young rock n roll Rod is my fav. Oh the 70s!!!

Absolutely love this song! One of my very favorites. His version of "Have I Told You Lately" undoes me every time; his voice and the emotions and the lyrics turn me all soft and smiley. Rod Stewart is absolutely a treasure!

I grew up in a Commercial Fishing family in Southeast Alaska. I was a father at young age but was blessed to have a great daughter and a partner in her mother that was my best friend and confidant. The year this came out and was on the radio and M TV all the time SE Alaska got hit by some unseasonably bad weather. Our family was out in it. Three boats bucking into the weather all night separated but on radio together. My older brother got in to trouble that night and had to send out a mayday to the coastguard. One of my uncles who we rented from while in Alaska got word that one of us was in trouble, but no one was sure which boat or how bad, and this got relayed to the rest of the family. My daughter was a smart one and she overheard enough to get the gist of the situation. She told me some years later about how she heard this song playing even as she was sitting in the darkened living room that had a view out to sea, praying to see our boat pulling around the point. She stayed up most of the night eventually crying herself to sleep, with the others listening to the VHS radio and watching for boats that where coming in. My brother got a tow in to a small bay, and we eventually linked up the next day. All of us where ok but exhausted and got word to our families that we were all ok and would be a few days waiting for the swell to flatten out so we could tow my brothers boat in. To this day my daughter can't listen to this song without crying and remembering that night, but she loves it still and calls me whenever it comes on the radio.

I HIGHLY recommend seeing Rod in concert while you still have a chance. The man is 78 years old and STILL sounds AMAZING live, still kicks Soccer balls into the crowd. He was my late wife's favorite and we had seen him every chance we had over our 20 years together and have seen him both chances I have had since...

From the UK here. Loved Rod from when he was in The Faces. He lived in Windsor back then near to where I lived. In his 70s he is very into the environment filling in potholes in the road. His wife is a special police officer out on patrol. Fabulous couple who believe in community. Thank you for playing this.

Rod Stewart is one of the most distinctive singers and his influence on Rock's music was great. Cooperation with Jeff Beck, Ron Wood ranks him among the greatest legends of rock music. I think you should play him more often because he had big and beautiful songs when he did his solo career. His songs are immortal….

You really should watch the live "Unplugged" version. Others, just to name a few, "First Cut is the Deepest", "Reason to Believe", "The Killing of Georgie", and "Sailing"......etc. etc.

Don’t forget he is SIR Rod Stewart and a national British treasure like his close friend Sir Elton John. He can sing anything , his The Great American Songbook albums were also brilliant.
