Great points. One of the nice things about the presonus console is the sound check replay. Record all the raw tracks and remix later. This way you can experiment with EQ and compressions along with plug ins on your time and not on a event, plus have some presets ready to speed up live sound check

Love your videos, John. As my sound mentor always says, there's 20 ways to think about (and do) almost anything in sound, you've just got to find the one that makes the most sense to you. He comes from an acting background and has his way, whereas I come from a software programming background and have my own way that's very different. I really enjoy and appreciate seeing how other professionals work and what setups they recommend. Also, I appreciate the reminder that I need to buy subs for my personal kit once my employer start getting gigs again...

Great video. I started with pretty much the exact same hardware. I ultimately upgraded to an x32 and and s32 stage box (instead of an analog snake) but honestly could definitely get away with an s16. Anyway. Great advice here. I'd agree with some others that a good 2 way speaker does the job in a small / mid size bar. Of course "milage may vary"

This was really helpful. It resulted in me deciding I don't have the budget to acquire the gear and get started right away. I want to switch from doing photography, so I have decided instead to get an ATEM mini iso and do small scale live streaming services (multi-cam) for product demos etc. I have access to a nice vintage Presonus 16.4.2 mixer and some PA gear for the time being from a band whose audio I will be doing for a while. I will also offer services to bands who want to cut a "demo tape" (including video) at their practice session location. I've done that for a band before and they scored a lot of live gigs on the back of it. Eventually I might accrue enough gear to do small to medium live sound gigs, but I will start by shooting/mixing small seminars and streaming them live with multi-camera setup and make a reputation for that niche. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your tireless efforts to educate and advise. Much appreciated.

Brilliant video as always, although I would just like to point out that the size of the driver does not necessarily equate to power output, and also has little to do with 'hitting those low notes'. Other parameters such as the drivers xmax and free air resonance (Fs) are better indicators of how much output a subwoofer will produce before distorting, and how low it will actually go.

x 42 I don’t disagree with the science, but in the real world I can say with confidence that the vast majority of all live sound systems run 18” subs. Not all, but I would be willing to say 90%.

You gotta check out the Lewitt 550 DM dynamic mic for vocals/guitar. imo it's the best handheld dynamic in the $100 price range. Sounds closer to a condenser, as far as realism goes. So much better than anything from Shure, honestly the the only thing the SM58 and SM57 have going for them these days, is their name and the build quality. Sound-wise, they have been outclassed for quite some time.

Great video! Question: I have a friend that has a live sound & lighting company that is no longer operating. She offered me free access to any and all of the company's equipment for any gigs that I'm able to get. That means my start up equipment cost is essentially $0, but I'll need to learn the trade. I'm going to volunteer to do sound at my church to gain some experience. This is a unique opportunity. What would you do if you were in my shoes? What learning resources would you recommend? As you mentioned jobs have evaporated due to COVID-19, and it seems like a good time to start building a sound & lighting business while I have nothing else to do. Thanks!

Hey John! My current rig consists of 2 EV ETX12p’s for mains and 4 EV EKX 18sp’s for subs. Most of the events I do are bands playing indoors, bars, clubs, etc... I feeling like I may need to look into something with a bit more output going into the summer season considering that even the ETX cabs are just getting by even doing indoor shows. I am often seeing the limit light come on quite a bit. All that to say, I’m researching what I should be considering going into the summer to do larger shows outdoors of a couple hundred people to 1000 people in attendance. Anything you recommend I look into? I’m aware of all the obvious options such as EV ETX35p, Yamaha DSR215, JBL SRX800, etc... wonder if you have anything wisdom for me in this situation, Thanks

In my opinion a 3 way cabinet allows you to push volume more before breaking up or maxing out. If you are running a stage with monitors you’re going to have to push your mains hard just to get over the stage volume.

Starting out I joined a band as a guitarist and slowly began to pick up skills, then i worked with a company for a very long time, from a company i wanted to take the church as my side gig. wasn't the best decision of my career as i learned most churches don't have standard or even good enough gear. I do not agree with you that having 18 "sub is something you must have. In many cases 15" can be more than good enough. if you are running audio for bands. They can produce cleaner sound and not the heavy bass sound many 18 "have. If you are going to use wireless microphones, use a signal amplifier, this will save you a lot of headaches

We will just have to agree to disagree on that one. I will say with confidence that the vast majority of all live sound systems run 18” subs. Not all, but I would be willing to say 90%.

Truly all depends on the gig. If it’s a bar band that doesn’t need a ton of gas or low end in the PA, I agree. But as a general rule of thumb, most production companies will equip themselves with 18” subs because they will generally be able to reproduce more and be able to take more you throw at it

@@jessecoonen7881 I must admit, I still use my 12" subs a lot. For the smaller venues and gigs, 18" subs I find are a little too much. Sure, I can dial them back but if I can save space and weight in what I'm carrying, I'll take the 12s over the 18s. It's great fun if I get to run both though... :D
