This video is intended to provide some tips, guidelines and encouragement for people who are thinking that maybe they should start their own RU-vid channel.
None of this should be considered 'pro tips' - because I am not a pro! - the main point here is: get started - leaving room for improvement is not really a bad thing!
Here are some resources I said I would link:
A comparison of some free video editing software: itsfoss.com/open-source-video...
OpenShot (the software I used to edit the video inside this video): www.openshot.org/
Tutorials on using OpenShot: ru-vid.com?searc...
The clamp arm you see me using in this video to secure the camera is one of a wide range of different devices with generally similar features - if you want to find one that suits you, start here: www.google.com/search?q=magic...
If you would like to link your new channel in the comments here, please go ahead and do that (it might take a little while for your comment to appear to the public as the spam filter often catches such things, but I will rescue it from the spam filter

My friend tried to start a channel just last year. He quit his job at Walmart and figured that he'd be able to live off of RU-vid. Not only did he gain only a few subscribers, but he also couldn't afford his apartment any longer. Don't go to RU-vid unless you are financially stable.
@visibletonone.superiortoal2033

That's stupid of him to do that. He should've only quit when he started making good money of RU-vid. Best wishes to him.

Just... don't put all your money and time into something that is going against you. RU-vid is not friendly to new channels, if you are lucky it will take at least 6 months to a year to get your first 100,000 subscribers.

Yeah - a lot of people hope for rapid success. That can happen if you have an amazing concept for content that will go instantly viral, but it's unlikely, and that kind of success can be fleeting anyway. It took me 12 years to get to 100k subs (but I am an outlier in terms of content type profiling on RU-vid)

I see so many channels fail becausd they are literally trying to carbon copy another youtuber. Many great tips in this video, be genuine, do what *you* enjoy, and be open to good feedback. Yeah, there is absolutely nothing wrong with borrowing an *idea* (in fact most RU-vidrs will probably be flattered if you do, and the ones who are offended, don't matter) - and there's nothing wrong with looking at someone else's style element and thinking "that's cool - I could do something similar" - but trying to *be* PewDiePie or *be* TKoR is just a recipe for disappointment

I went from 250 subs in February to almost 2,000 now. Great advice. I’ll add my own unwanted advice: titles and thumbnails are incredibly important. They’re the first things people see. Tags help your video be searchable. Write good tags.
@AtomicShrimp

@CheeseDud

Atomic Shrimp Of course! Good tags, titles, and thumbnails for good content :)
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 4 года назад
Most of my thumbnails, I edit using Ulead PhotoImpact, which is ancient, and unsupported, and doesn't actually work fully in Windows 10, but I'm kind of stuck using it because I haven't migrated my workflow to something else (and because it has a nice text effect that I like for the textual overlay, where I use that). I scale mine by cutting out the underlying image using a mask that is pre-sized to 1920*1080 pixels, but can be resized maintaining proportion - and this creates thumbnails the right proportion for RU-vid. I really ought to move to some other image editing package

Variety this broad, where you can watch dog training tips one moment and origami the next, is a very nice and rare thing to see in one place on a platform this massive, though it’s even more satisfying to see a wholesome guy like Mr. Shrimp, who can *both* argue for and succeed against the vortex that is the popularity algorithm, thrive on it. So happy you made it, Mike! You know well that the love of the thing itself is the best way to make it, no matter what it is you’re doing. And, I guess since we’re plugging channels, my humble channel contains some abstract stuff you have to use your imagination for, but the overall theme I’m looking to achieve is that you can make something out of anything, and optical illusions play a huge part in that. I don’t expect anything; I’m just content on seeing where it goes.
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 4 года назад
Truth is, I ran this channel for like 11 or 12 years before it took off, and whilst I always hoped it would grow, I had probably dismissed any realistic hope of that happening, but still decided to keep on making videos because it's what I love doing (even for a very small audience, it was always fun) - so I suppose that's one of the things I could have added to this video: do what you love, or find a way to love what you do, because then it is its own reward.
@nessamillikan6247
@nessamillikan6247 4 года назад
@@AtomicShrimp Yep! I get recommended your oldest videos from time to time, and they’re still every bit as engaging. The sheer waste of that printer ink still never ceases to surprise and appall me. Imo, the concept of passion is a harder thing to pitch as a tip, though, because finding it requires acceptance of any outcome, especially challenging when greed is a primary object. Even if a person knows what he/she is getting into, it must take experience to understand that you’ll always put in more tedious labor than you will see visual returns for it. The reality of it is that it takes a disciplined and groundedly resilient person to make regular content; it’s not for those many who are blinded by, and sensitive to the burn out, of the glamorous ideals success paints in our heads. True love (in this case, RU-vid) is looking to see past the honeymoon phase instead of as the highest point in retrospect. That said, I truly do hope the best for the people you’ve just inspired, though. :)

Indeed. You can train your voice, but most of that is about enunciation and pace. You should not try to make massive changes to your voice except perhaps to portray a character. I actually realised recently that I have at least two different voices - one is my 'reading voice' which was trained largely from reading bedtime stories to my kids (where intonation, inflection and pace are very important), and another is my 'showing voice' which I think I learned when I was demonstrating crafts at a youth club (where I would have to maintain control of the narrative).

Well... I haven't exactly started "recently", but I have recently been trying to stay consistent, doing what I love while trying to attract new audiences which clearly is pretty difficult. All I want is an active audience, since doing what I love never made me any money (which would be comfortable but isn't the main objective) and having essentially no one watching is rather disheartening. But yeah, guess I just had to vent somewhere that seemed appropriate... and it seemed appropriate here I suppose. Carry on with the comfy content man, I'll continue enjoying.

It is tough, and I think tougher than it ever was, because people are generally less tolerant of promotion/advertising/spam than they have been in the past - so finding a legitimate way to promote your channel is really hard
@AntoniTolwinski
@AntoniTolwinski 4 года назад
@@AtomicShrimp I agree, I feel like a large majority of people synced with the whole social media "routine" have developed an envious attitude to anyone who even hints at trying to "make it". RU-vid itself as a platform doesn't seem to be much help either - apart from maybe the random recommendation fairy occasionally introducing people to quality content (which is how I discovered your hilarious scambaiting videos and got into your channel in general). Aside from such neat spontaneity, it seems to me that people who are already popular get pushed to stay popular... which makes sense, but I wish the smaller content creators would be taken into consideration also.

@@AntoniTolwinski YT is a victim of it's own success, the only way it can monitor the quality of a channel is from the channel's feedback, there isn't anyone who watches everything to categorize it and search for suitable viewers. Creators categorize their own content and use buzzwords to get attention and very often negative feedback is added to the positive by YT's algorithms to get an overall picture of how much interaction a video produced, it does not reflect the quality of the content. The total number of views is less important to YT than the amount of votes and comments so a video which is stirring up a lot of negative feedback gets pushed ahead of one that might have more views but less votes and comments. Another issue here is that the vast majority of people don't bother to vote or comment on videos (hence the constant reminders), it's easier to do it on a PC or laptop than on a TV screen. A lot more people are watching on HD TV screens now due to the high quality of video, YT is becoming just like a TV channel for a lot of people and they don't want to pause to vote or comment because it takes time and interrupts the flow.
@feathero3
@feathero3 4 года назад
@@AntoniTolwinski In addition to that RU-vid tab of "what's popular," there should be a tab for "channels you may not have heard of", or "up and coming content," or "hidden gems." Something like that to promote new channels. At least for people who.just reached 1K subscribers or something.

You have such a lovely voice and your sense of humor is both gentle and hilarious. I love the variety on your channel. We do a weekly 3-hour podcast that is mostly political satire. I've been learning how to animate, so I wanted to do full animations of all our spoofs & fake commercials, but it is such a huge project each week that by the time I could finish even one, many of them were no longer timely. Your "perfect is the enemy of good" statement really kicked me in the head. You're right. I need to get that content out there! Just this week I've started doing a "radio shorts" series. Not much to look at, but then I follow several HUGE channels that are nothing but an avatar and a moving background, so I'm hoping if we can make people laugh, they'll come back for more. Thank you so much for the advice and inspiration!

So, here's the channel pitch: Every week, I develop a little programming project - usually a game or cool graphical thing of some kind - and walk through the entire process from start to finish. It's not exactly a tutorial, but more like a live tutoring session where I problem-solve and sketch stuff out on a whiteboard as we go. Hopefully this is interesting for anyone looking to get started with coding or game development... Here's a recent example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3uFqsC5PGhA.html

I won't bother leaving any links to videos I've made because most of them are just short not very entertaining clips from games I play or used to play and I've been doing this for about 3 years... Another part of having a channel that I've learned is that you have to convince yourself to try and not put yourself down when you don't like a video and actually put forth effort into learning from what you didn't like in that video so that you can apply that knowledge to future videos...

Some things I've heard that I agree with. [1] Making content is about loving what you do, not making money. The latter occurs naturally from the former. [2] Be yourself, be honest about who you are and what you're doing. No one likes a fake. [3] Decide on an upload schedule and try to stick to it. People like knowing when to expect more if they like what they saw already. [4] Learn how to appear in searches.

I actually think it can be counterproductive for a growing channel - not only because it annoys people at the outset, but if you beg people to get on board, but your content isn't enough on its own to make them subscribe, then sooner or later they are going to regret subscribing and leave (and although I don't know for sure, I suspect the YT algorithms notice the rate of unsubscription)
