Just wanna point out that Luffy never heard Nami's entire story from Nojiko since he chose to walk off before she told the crew. What he understood was just Nami got hurt by a fishman named Arlong and finally asked for his help and that's more than enough to make him mad.
Luffy saw Nami with her entire animus shattered. She was stabbing herself in the arm and screaming Arlong's name. So yeah, it should be more than enough to make him mad.
28:15 Emily Rudd (Nami in the live action) said this scene was the moment she became a real One Piece fan - and why it was so important to her the live action did it justice.
This resonates with those 2 episodes of Oshi no ko so well (iykyk), except for the stark contrast of the circumstances - Netflix actually cared for the show unlike that producer.
Welcome to the point where first time watchers decide that they’re in it for the long haul! I know y’all have seen the live action and have already decided to continue with the anime, but it’s so exciting to see you watch this iconic moment! Let the walk to Arlong Park begin!
The walk to Arlong Park is a switch up that very bluntly says "In case you didnt notice, this is a very adult story". One Piece is a comedy, but its also an epic tragedy. Put it up there with the Odyssey and Illiad.
Man that scene with all the boys sitting after Luffy gives Nami the hat has given me chills in the manga, anime and in the live action. It’s one of the most impactful scenes for Nami’s character STILL and I’m glad that all 3 formats have done it well
I love the way the anime protrayed Bellemere like the badass she truly is... Kicking down arlong, pointing the gun on him with a cig...the coolest mother
Some people say Bellemere was dumb for sacrificing herself instead of keeping her daughters a secret. Those people clearly aren't paying attention, because the sbow LITERALLY explains why she does it. The _first thing_ the Fishmen do is destroy every boat on the coast. She's a former marine, she knows how these dudes work. Escape was never an option for the girls, and Bellemere was the only one who understood that.
Even if it was dumb, that doesn't matter. The point was she couldn't bare to pretend she didn't have a family. She was incapable of it, for *any* reason except perhaps to save them, but not even to save herself.
While I do like the Live-Action One Piece, the original Arlong Arc was SO much better. One of the big things was the end here, in how it shows the kind of person Luffy is. Unlike the Live-Action, he goes in with absolutely *no* clue as to what's going on. He doesn't even know who Arlong is; the only reason he knows the guy's name at all is because Nami was shrieking it while stabbing her own shoulder. Luffy doesn't care about your past. He cares that you're his friend now, and he will demolish *anyone* who messes with you, no questions asked.
@@mikays7059 ehhhh, they could've covered a lot more important scenes if they hadn't added the unnecessary Garp storyline. Canon scenes got rushed and unexistent scenes in the source material got dragged out. Don't get me wrong, I think they did great with the adaptation, but adding Garp and Koby and wasting like 10% of screen time on that was a decision way too stupid.
I dunno if really some of the Coco Village changes are based on the amount of episodes . Plenty of the stuff they changed are new scenes that just replaced the old one . Imo it was just clearly artistic license and choices . It did not really take less screen time to picture the village as people that just hate Nami and Nojiko not being aware of her plans
Their reactions are so pure i can't even coment like "Wait until they get to 'that moment'" because i don't wanna spoil anything, not even a episode number o line of dialogue.

You guys are so real!! You laugh when its time to laugh, cry when we're supposed to cry, pay enough attention to the details. It actually enhances the experience, crazy.
Non-fans (or future fans) sometimes get annoyed at us for pestering them to start a 1100+ episode show, but it's only because we really really want to vicariously relive the experience of watching/reading for the first time through them 😂🤣
Dude same I remember after I watched the LA version when it first came out, I went back and read the manga for this section and I was sobbing all over again 17 years later
@@jiv3o275 bro, i had read the whole east blue and Alabasta sagas two times one year before the LA come out (because is just the volumes i had) and wherm i get to this scene i cried again. I think seeing with real people actually renew the emotional weight of the scene because althrough we knew this arc from star to finish like the palm of our hands, watching real people materializing this is a different lever of emotion. I was sckeptical AF about the LA, but now i'm just excited to see what and how they will adaptad futher arcs and without any doubt i may not be perfect, but sure will have a heart on it and will be interesting.
Agreed, I love how aspects of Bellemere carry on to Nami. She's tough love when she needs to be, but she has a soft spot for children and women, because she grew up with a sister and a mother
Remember far back near the start of the arc Gen told the villagers "remember the quiet fight! if we wanted to fight back we would've done so years ago!" he was actually reminding everyone about what Nami was doing, their 'quiet fight' was waiting for nami to get enough money to buy the village.
Nami's story was the hook and sinker for most One Piece fans. Including me 😂 Im SOOOO HAPPY you guys are continuing with the anime!! Fyi, if you think Sanji's and Nami's back story is sad. You guys are in for a WIIIILD ride!! And the one Piece community is here for it!! Happy watching 😁
One Piece is one of those shows where you know exactly how badly you bawled your eyes out when you saw some of these scenes for the first time. But after that you can't help but grin when watching others go exactly through that, knowing how great the emotional experience was! And then join the tears.
Isn't it wonderful that the first thing Luffy really do since he's come to Cocoyashi is to stop Nami from hurting herself? He completely respect her, he knows she needs help but he also knows that she is the only one who can ask for help and he must respect her choice whatever it is. Either Zoro, Sanji and Usopp somehow got involved already with Nami's behaviour (in the case of Sanji, his will to save her, while the other two actually tried to reason with her), but only Luffy let her completely free. But since they are friend, he won't allow her to hurt herself and once Nami finally asks for help, he immediately agrees, gives her his most important treasure and goes beat Arlong up. Simply amazing.
'Walk to Arlong Park' has been one of the famous anime instances in early 2000 in the whole Big 3. Its been a trend setup during those times. That's why its so good!
So glad you covered these 3 episodes together. It really is the best way to get the full impact of the most powerful scenes in the East Blue Saga. As many before have said, this is the moment most One Piece fans fell hopelessly in love with this story and knew they were in it for the long haul. It's not when One Piece "gets good" since it's been good since episode 1. It's not even the point where One Piece first gets epic: that was arguably Zoro's fight with Mihawk, showing us that our crew really are small fish in a small pond about to enter into the ocean. But it is the first time we get to see Oda's mastery of long-term storytelling. Nami's basically already told us her (current) primary motivation in EPISODE 5 when she said she was saving up 100 million berries to buy a village ... and most readers/viewers pretty much glossed over that entirely. Since then we've seen hints and glimpses of Nami's true character throughout the series, though always just slips of the mask she's always wearing. Episode 35-37 are the payoff of a story arc that started 30 episodes prior and we never even knew it. And it would never have been as powerful as it is if not for that 30 Episode lead-up. And the crazy part is, Oda does this ALL THE TIME in One Piece, setting things up in advance that seem like throw-aways that then hit like a dump truck hundreds of episodes later.
Ahhh sh** , they're playing the" things are about to go down" music on the infamous Walk to Arlong Park. Punch in the gate, punch Arlong across the place, don't need to know WHY, only that you made our Navigator cry!!!! That's our Captain!!!!!
East Blue has some BANGERS! Overtaken, Duel pt 2, Bazooka pt 3, To the Grand Line, and of course We Are. Also, if you've made it through Enies Lobby, Mother Sea is an instant water faucet for your eyes
That's the one change in the LA that irritates me the most. A throwaway line from Gen or Nojiko would've done it, and Nojiko's tattoos would make sense.
@@boitaho Narratively they had to make it align and weren’t going to flesh out Gen’s story further in the live action or give the villagers more screen time and lines. So essentially they were left trying to fix the hole in the story that if Nojiko knew she’d have probably been ostracized from the village for standing up for Nami - cause she wouldn’t break a promise to her sister not to tell anyone what she was doing - so instead they had to make it so nobody knows what’s going on. From a story perspective it still works and resonates with the general notes and themes…but I always found this version so much better and more emotional. Because the idea the entire village knows what’s going on and suffering quietly specifically because they didn’t want Nami to feel like she was trapped that they’d understand if she ever chose to run away and they’d never hold it against her if they did - that this was more solidarity of the village and done out of love - it’s just far better…but takes too much time to play out fully unfortunately
@@tylerdurden5406 it's a hole they'd have created themselves anyway , there isn't a need for Nojiko to be there among the crowd to stand up for Nami . She could just have been at her house , with Gen sending the crew that way . I disagree that it takes more time to get the original stuff unfold , at least enough . The new scenes they added basically replace and matches the originals in airspace and time . Imo they just wanted their own take and artistic license , which is fine , but inferior
@@ZarathosDaimaoh it’s hard to really understand thought how much goes into making the show. I don’t think this was re-written because they want their own artistic license - because Oda had final say on any proposed changes. So think of it in terms of how they had to reduce Bellemere, the Doctor has no lines, the fact they turned an animated arc consisting of 14 episodes (which even if you said there was only 14 minutes of meat in the 22 minute air time still is nearly 3 hours) and condensed it into under 2 hours. It wouldn’t have taken the same amount of on screen time - I mean sure we can cut Johnny and Yosaku, Hachi and Momoo - but they’re scenes don’t equal the fat that needs to be trimmed to condense and adapt it. So it’s very much they needed to take the rough outline of what’s left after what’s been cut and try and fit the puzzle pieces together still. You have to approach it considering many people introduced to the series through the LA won’t have the background context anime fans do, so everything needs to be on the screen. We need to relate to Gen and the rest of the villagers for this moment to have meaning. Because it shows how much they meant to the entire village outside of the family. The moment the villagers say - not to Nami and Nojiko but ABOUT Nami and Nojiko and Bellemere how they wouldn’t be happy without seeing their smiles….and how the village plays a role in raising the kids…all of that is the setup for the fact they all knew about the deal and kept it to themselves. It’s just going to feel hollow rather than heartfelt when you cut the other stuff, so you can achieve a similar (but ultimately lesser) emotional bond by having it so none of them knew what Nami was going through on their behalf and why they want to rally around her. Anime is superior but the LA did what they did for logistics
@@tylerdurden5406 I'm talking about very specific scenes , if I'm not clear enough . it does not take really more airtime to have the village and Nojiko knows what happened , instead of scenes depicted them not knowing and lashing out . Of course there are constraints , but they likely did not just do everything solely with that in mind , they do have their visions . They even had to persuade Oda for some of those . Oda having final say and oversight does not mean that they cant artistically express themselves or at least plead with him over those
Luffy putting his hat on Nami is symbolic of her being his treasured friend and crewmate as well. This is why even without knowing her story he asked her if she needed help and when she finally did ask, he said of course he would.
Tuesday and Thursdays have become my favorite days of the week. I'm on chapter 701 in the manga and going back to the beginning of the story as you watch it has been incredibly fun! (I really hope you keep watching)
Another thing that hits much harder here is the final line: "which one of you is Arlong?" In the live action, for some reason, they felt insecure about people caring about self-contained arcs, so they thought they could do better than Oda, and extended Arlong's role (and Coby's, and Helmeppo's, and Garp's, and Buggy's) to cover all or most the season. So when Arlong arrives at the Baratie and demands to see Luffy, to have that superfluous first fight, and Luffy comes out asking which one is Arlong... it falls flat. Because it doesn't mean anything. It's just posturing, one testosterone fueled dude to another. They might as well have added a "I heard you're talking crap about me" line, or something to that effect. Here, instead, it has a lot more meaning. Luffy has kept out of their affairs, refused to hear anything about Nami's story... he only cares that some guy named Arlong made his friend cry. And it doesn't matter who it is... it doesn't matter how big he is... it doesn't matter that he's the big boss in town. This Arlong made Nami cry, and so he's going to pay. Simple. End of story. ❤
I don't disagree, but I think it only fell flat for fans of the original. It was fan service that didn't have the same impact because of the plot changes, but it wouldn't have exactly detracted from the experience of those who didn't know
It really is not that they thought they know more than Oda. It is about resources. You do not want actors for couple minutes of screen time and then discard them not to be seen for xxx episodes.
It's not that "they felt insecure about people caring about self-contained arcs" There was just not enough time to flesh out everything. They needed to put some parts of Namis story further into the beginning so that they could even cover the most important parts. It's why the live action could never reach the impact of the anime. Because it doesn't have the time and budget to become that long and get every detail even in there. Yes, it is not as good, but it does convey the major feelings and important parts while being true to the original themes. That's why it's still great as the thing it is.
This was when One Piece stole my heart. At first I was watching just because I saw it as a fun lighthearted adventure show to kill time on, but from the moment Nami asked Luffy for help I knew then and there that I needed to see this story to the end. "These 4 men are here to change destiny. Burn their images into your eyes!" Love this line especially now. The further into the show I go the harder that line is
Passing over his hat is symbolic. He isn't asking her to take care of his treasures while retrieving hers. He is placing his treasure on the line, equally to hers. Meaning if he can't get her treasure back, he forfeits his. It's a sign of trust.
Considering how far they went to stay true to certain events (Chibi Buggy, Zeff auto-canibalism, cast off ceremony, etc.) It's kinda surprising they cut the walk to Arlong Park. "Lets go!" "Right!" *impotently watches Coco village get razed... like bruh, wut?
For some reason is the flashback of Nojiko accepting death until she hears and sees Nami and Nojiko is what gets me the most. Like, those two were quite literaly her reason to live
Nami: "Just a little more and I can finally smile from the bottom of my heart." Although she put a fake smile a few moments later, the statement will become true because of the 4 men that will change their lives. The WALK to Arlong Park is so iconic even up to this day. Luffy walking to the battlefield to fight Arlong without even knowing what he looks like is so wonderful! He only first knew Arlong by name and that he is a fishman but then later knowing Arlong is the one who made Nami cry and stab her own arm, that was Luffy's last straw. After that moment, Luffy finally knew who Arlong is. The one who deserves a punch in the face!
This scene (the Nami scene) embodies one of the best things in One Piece. It's the satisfying feeling of Luffy, and the gang, embodying the viewer's wish to punch the seemingly untouchable incarnation of evil that has been the source of too many people's sufferings.
That Straw Hat means everything to Luffy and when he put it on her head after she FINALLY asked for help. That was his way of saying you're one of my friends and crew YOUR PROBLEMS ARE NOW MY PROBLEMS TOO!!! on that day she gained 4 brothers that won't let anyone fk with her ever again.
Luffy not even knowing who Arlong was is the capper for me. No idea what he looks like, what he's done...doesn't know anything about him. But Nami was crying.
I think u guys didn’t notice how pure luffy was. He didn’t even heard nami’s backstory and didn’t even know what was happening. But when nami asked for help and saw her crying he immediately accepted to help him, showing that he don’t need reason to help his friends. In live action this part of luffy’s character was not shown
@@FlowerEmblem very true. But the difference between the lion and the Sun pirates, to me, is very distinct. The Lion iconography was most likely retroactively reused by Oda later (we know how): at the time he was drawing the panels from Arlong Park, I don't think he had any further plans for the design itself. The mention of the Sun Pirates seems deliberate by comparison: there is absolutely no reason to bring it up since it affects nothing in this specific arc. Which means, all of "THAT storyline thread" (you know, with the Fishmen), was already at least partly in his head even back then. That's crazy to me.
One Piece is truly a masterpiece in first experience or re-experience because caughting up in the story and then rewatching at the start again, we realize some details that were planted long ago that dont seem that big of an impact at first watch
Why did Arlong make that deal with Nami? Because it gave her hope and a "legitimate" way to get out of the situation that he never thought she'd actually accomplish. People with no hope just shut down, and any sort of work they actually accomplish is lack-luster and mediocre at best. However, if they think they have a chance for something better they'll strive for it. By making her one hope an avenue through him, Arlong basically guaranteed Nami's cooperation lest she "break" their deal and her one hope for freedom gets snuffed out. It is literally a way to manipulate her into accepting her chains because she has hope she can actually be free of them if she plays along and doesn't betray her owner. It's sick and twisted, but it worked.
My favourite underrated part of this batch of episodes was Nami deciding not to ask for help anymore because every time she did in the past (Gen-san especially), they got hurt. She carried that guilt with her for so long that because of her, Gen-san was cut up so badly and wrapped in bandages. It made the part where she finally asks Luffy for help hit harder. She was so desperate and finally made herself vulnerable to her friends to share this burden that she’d been carrying alone for so long. Meanwhile, Gen-san kept wearing the pinwheel because even though he and the rest of the villagers had to act like they didn’t know about Nami’s plan so as not to burden her further and act like they hated her, all he wanted was for her to keep smiling the way she did as a child - the smile that saved Bellemere. That’s why when Luffy and his crew finally returned her smile to her, Gen-san made him promise not to ever take that smile away from her. In the manga, Nami’s changed tattoo (from Arlong Park branding to a tangerine + pinwheel - the symbol of the mother figure and father figure of her life) couldn’t completely cover the old one so she actually has a deep scar around the back of her shoulder that was featured in a couple of scenes that I don’t think the anime ever adapted.
The villagers are Nami’s treasure. So Luffy giving her his straw hat is him saying, “you hold on to mind while I take care of yours.” They’re trusting each other with the other’s treasure.
I have been Eagerly waiting for this since Tuesday and the fact that you even made it a three ep vid is perfect!! This is OUR CREW!! “They made Big Sis Nami cry, what more reason could they possibly need”
Luffy does not know who Arlong is because that does not matter. His crewmate (Nami) asked for help and that is is. She wanted Arlong to get his ass kicked, so Luffy asked which of them it was.
It's so much more devastating here than the live action because Nami doesn't care that she lost the money, she cares that she'll lose her village. When she couldn't stop the villagers is when she literally lost everything. Cutting out the plot device of Johnny and Yosaku was a mistake imo just for that exact moment.
You know a show is iconic when people walking is a big deal. This was one of the biggest scenes when it first came out cause not only did you have luffy leading the charge but you had the whole crew. It's the you mess with one of us you mess with all of us phrase brought to life. Luffy didn't even hear the whole story from Nojiko either. He walked off before she said it. All he knew was that somebody named arlong messed with his navigator and that's all he needed
This is basically the moment in the show when all of us back then fell in love with One Piece for the first time. It is the very first One Piece peak experience. And looking at all of One Piece released today it wouldnt even make the TOP5 best moments list. Kind of crazy.
This is the point, no one can go back after seeing this, this is the arc that made me stay, Nami's story is one of the most powerful thing i've seen in an anime. I love One piece.
4 months later and i still watch this when i feel like i need a good cry! 25:54 sanji mentions how much suffering nami has endured, and we all know by this episode that sanji has endured a pretty significant amount of suffering on that barren island, and probably more. makes you appreciate how much weight he intends to bear for her, along with the rest of the crew
Congrats, you've reached the point where the show reaches another level. The walk to Arlong Park is usually where most people lock in and say the show really caught their attention. Enjoy the journey, you're in for a hell of a ride.
Bellmere both refused to act as if her, Nami and Nojiko weren't a family, also as a former marine she knew the navy wouldn't do much this far away from the grand line, and it would have been hard for Nami and Nojiko to run away from the island and Arlong. Or that even if they managed, she was well aware that it would have been very hard for two little girls to survive out there, they had a better chance if the village helped them going on. Nami's backstory is really heartbreaking...
Belle-mere, Nojiko and Genzo are such amazing characters. That was my main gripe in the life action. It needed a third episode to flesh out how important these characters are to Nami
I think they were originally planning for 12 episodes, then it got scaled back to 10 before finally settling on 8. Usopp and Nami both could have really benefited from even 2 additional episodes imo. If they don't give at least 2 to Drum and 3 to Alabasta next season I'm gonna be unhappy
I know you girls talked about not watching past the live action parts. But I truly truly hope you do. It's gonna be a year or more til the next season and you have SOOOOOOO much to cover. Plus these reactions are gold :) There i only a few more episodes left til the ending of the live action parts. Hope you'll reconsider. Either way, enjoyed it as always.
I respect the heck out of Emily Rudd, Inaki Godoy, the composers and directors for nailing this scene in the live action. If they had messed this scene up, it would have been over. They did this scene justice, especially Emily Rudd's acting
Emily knew that the impact would absolutely matter, being an old school fan, especially of Nami. She would have been working on that for years just in case she ever got involved with One Piece, and then she was cast as Nami. And she kept working on it until she knew she would absolutely nail that moment. And she nailed it. The absolute agony in her voice as she screamed Arlong’s name while stabbing her arm, the sorrow and fury, and then finally, the desperate plea for help. She nailed every second of it.
This batch of episodes is so potent in showing why I'm so upset by the Genzo erasure the live action performed. What a good man! 😭 "Haylee, are you crying?" "Shut up, go away!" "*cackling*" 👏😂
They nailed the Nami hat scene in the live action, but I was a bit disappointed they didn't do the walk to Arlong Park. It's one of the most iconic scenes in the whole series
For the walk to work, the plot would need to be the same.. I mean who really knows the direction to the Arlong Park except Nami and the villagers.. in the anime, Only Usopp knew..forget Zoro's direction reliability.. Johnny and Yosaku, even if small characters, add that cheesy element of hype while the Walk goes on.. The music would need to be great as well.. In the LA, if only Nami knew the way..imagine her walking alongside the crew, and the badass music plays..people would have destroyed the LA then and there if Nami was part of the Walk.
@@-l-3591He had to make sure he got it on her head properly. In the anime, he can easily slam it on her head, because there is no chance of hurting her. But Inaki could accidentally hurt Emily if he were to slam the hat on her head too hard. So he had to make sure it went on her head and then push it down so it was on firmly.
I really enjoy watching this reaction, so wholesome!! Ah, If you two sobbing in this episode, I can't wait for you guys to reach a number of episodes that I'm 100% sure you'll gonna bawling your eyes out, I am so excited!!
Honestly what hit harder in the anime as well was Nami hearing the story of how Bellmare found them, it’s so much more interesting to hear it from a completely different perspective, it wasn’t shown really at all that Bellmare was a huge troublemaker in the live action
What you saw here is the real Nami. She's a girl who doesn't give up at the first, second or third setback. As long as she could continue to keep those villagers safe and spend another decade gathering the money while having learned from this situation, that was okay. She gathered the money once, and she can gather it again a second time. There was a future, no matter how far away that future was. But those villagers are her treasure, and when they finally decided they'd rather die than hold her back, she finally hit rock bottom. The live action fails to establish the mutual love between Nami and those villagers. It turns the matter of 'Arlong sent the rat to take her stash' into an implicit realization that 'he is done with her and the rest of the villagers and they will be attacked', but it is a leap of logic that doesn't entirely support the way she started stabbing her arm without even seeing her village burn. I love the live action for the many great things it does and how great Emily Rudd's acting is during those iconic scenes, but it is like a villa built on a cheap, crappy foundation in comparison. I am glad you are both enjoying the arc, and hope you'll enjoy the rest. I wonder whether you'll end up sticking with your initial decision to not go beyond the material shown in the live action...
Nojiko and the village knowing about Nami raising 100 million berries and Nami is trying to put on a brave face makes Nami feel more desperate than she does in the live action. And while it's hard to watch Nami stab herself, it feels more like a mutilation than it does in the live action.
“Which one of you is Arlong.” That’s so perfect. He didn’t hear her story. He doesn’t know. All he cares about is that Arlong hurt his friend and he’s going to pay.
29:00 we just witnessed the birth of a TRUE one piece fan right before our eyes. watching other people experience this moment for the first time brings ME so much joy 😭 that reaction made me so happy
The "DETEIKE DETEIKE DETEIKE!" is what hit for me 😭 That last desperate plea to protect her friends despite also desperately wanting their help. Firstly, since you already know Fishmen experience oppression based on race, pay attention to some of the things the Straw Hats say in this fight. Oda did a great job of using our expectations against us when we read/watched this the first time through. Secondly, this is the moment that solidifies One Piece fans, but a lot of them didn't realize before the live action. There is a much bigger more notable moment that causes you to have to admit that this is an incredible series that happens later. I won't say when, but there has been an even bigger moment than that. I expect at least one or two more before the series is complete. Finally, I hope you're planning on watching the next saga. There's a filler arc with important info in it coming up. If you choose not to watch it, someone, possibly I, will tell you what that information is. I hope you enjoy the rest of whatever you decide to watch.
Easily one of the saddest bits in the anime. I will warn you now, this isn't even top 5 material as far as saddest. This is, after thinking about it, the 10th saddest moment in the anime as far as I am caught up currently. If that gives you any indication of what this show turns into, that is. Absolutely good luck on the journey because it hasn't even **started** yet. I refer to everything before the grand line as a prequel to the actual story. Arlong is such a great villain. We'll be seeing more of east blue characters as the story continues, so keep them in your mind!
