I know it has been a while since this video was posted but, even though you were looking at some NFL footage, I wonder if you noticed that a majority of the film you were watching in the fist video was actually from college (university) games, not professional (NFL). The college games are sometimes more brutal because they are competing for places on the professional teams.

There are a few illegal hits. If you see an official throw a yellow flag or reach to the waistband immediately, it was probably an illegal hit. But most of these are legit hard hits. While death is very uncommon, these athletes do suffer traumatic brain injury as a result. Even playing at younger ages can set up long term brain issues. It is a beautiful sport, but it has significant risks. ETA: As a 40 some year old American, I've never seen anyone die during a football game, but I have seen a race car driver die while I was watching. That said, the risks and injuries for most football players are after they quit playing. You seldom meet 80 year old, former NFL players. We had a retired player on my street. By his early 70's, he was in rapid mental decline. One of the nicest people you'd meet, but his wife who was about his same age, looked years younger. However, as an American, I still find baseball to be the most beautiful and interest sport and football the most exciting.

southern daze Clearly you’ve never been in the trenches going full steam 100% against 300+ pound guys for hours in a game. Linemen are the “fittest” guys in the team. They need the most cardiovascular endurance, the most strength, and the most pure endurance mindset of anyone in the field because they’re getting hit hard every single play by people who would run over an average person with just one arm. So yes, playing in the line is like getting hit by a truck every play, trust me.
@mattwicked6882
@mattwicked6882 3 года назад
@@iDropPhats I have to agree. The coachs work the linemen harder. I was 6'0 198lbs in HS. I got hit by a guy that was 6'3 245lbs. Man... i thought a mack truck got on the field. Got me right in the low thigh. Flipped me over his shoulders. I went up and landed on my knee wrong. That was my last game. That was 14 years ago. Still have problems. According to Mike, Joe got up, spit out blood and said “I’m glad you made it! I was beginning to wonder if you were even in the game!” Joe Montana is the goat. I played football in high school and university. (My last year was '03.) The reason why we wear pads is so that the force of the impacts will be distributed across a larger area, which will prevent focused damage to the body, but that doesn't prevent the body being jarred, nor does it prevent joints being dislocated, tendons/ligaments being snapped, or the brain bouncing around in the skull even though the helmet is protecting the head. Of course, there can still be hits that are hard enough to break a bone, but those are usually due to the body being contorted, trapped, or impinged, not from the impact itself.
@garyco766
@garyco766 4 года назад
So a few comments to address some questions you had: 1) most of those hits were legal, those some were also not (you saw penalties called on some), and some are no longer legal (helmet to helmet, spearing, targeting a defenseless player, etc) because they added rules to protect players (especially the quarterback). 2) injuries are not terribly uncommon, but mostly they are joint injuries and not directly related to hard hitting 3) deaths are extremely rare, but the repeated concussive hits are now linked to a degenerative brain disease that keeps showing up in former players. You have to watch football and learn the strategy to really appreciate it. Now you know it can be brutal, but the precision required is mind-boggling. The speed is mind-boggling. It really is an amazing combination of speed, strength, size, precision probably unmatched by any other sport. And to top all of that, really intricate strategy (mostly the coaches) and split second decision making (mostly the QB). Once you can understand the sport enough to appreciate, it's fascinating to watch, more than any other sport.

People think the padding and everything is just to protect the players, but what actually happens is when you learn to properly hit someone with your pads, you can unload so much more force into a hit, without worrying about hurting yourself. You basically turn into a 200+lbs missile in motion.

These guys don't die usually but it does affect them long-term because of concussions. They go through a concussion protocol and if the player doesn't pass they are not allowed to play again until they are cleared. The NFL is not nearly as rough as it used to be either. The NFL has put new rules in in recent years that can lead to the ejection of players who target with the crown of the helmet and the receivers can't be hit up high if they are defenseless without a personal foul penalty. I'm probably not including all the details, but the NFL is changing.

@Derek Johansen or something, you're comparing the AVERAGE NHL speed to the TOP END NFL speeds... Conner McDavid was recorded going over 27 last year. It's just about as rare for two NFL players to be going full bore in direct opposing directions, as it is for players in the NHL. Kick returns in the NFL are about the only place this might get skewed (which is why they've changed a lot of kick rules in recent years), but it's still not the normal in either instance. In probably 90%+ of hits, they are taken at angles similar to that of the NHL. A top speed difference of 5+ MPH, assuming comparable weights of players (the players reaching these speeds are similar body type for both sports), and comparing just peak impact (negating angles/duration), a NHL hit has a peak impact force that is 150% of an NFL hit. Run this again at average speeds for both, account for the skewed average of kick returns... Yeah, the scientific study that determined NHL hits have, on average, 17% more force behind them is more than likely accurate. Even if they don't occur nearly as often.

Just enjoyed watching your video. I am an American who started playing football at 8 years old. I also coached youth and middle-school age football for 12 years. I'm glad you appreciate the game. Two things to keep in mind, most of those hits are defensive tackles. Just as many tough collisions are made by offensive linemen blocking and running backs breaking tackles but, the tackles tend to make the highlight reel more often. The other thing that REALY MAKES FOOTBALL GREAT is not even the physical contact. Its the chess game that is played out by the coaches. Instead of moving plastic pieces on a board, live men fight on the field. (really strong, fast , men). The offense has to decide what play to run....how many yards do they need on this down ( you only get 4 downs or PLAYS to advance at least 10 yards down the field or the other teams gets the ball.) Should they pass or run?....what formation?...what hole to run to...who will get the ball to run? If pass...what routes will the receivers run? who will they pass to? Then they have to anticipate what the defense will do. Will they load up the box anticipating run? will they blitz to pressure a pass? if so which players will blitz? will they play man coverage or zone coverage? The crazy thing is they only have 30 seconds after a play to make these decisions. Believe me, I have coached, it is CRAZY to rack your brain thinking of all that and calling a play in 30 seconds. THEN, even when both sides have their plays called and line up, they look at each other's alignments, and make last second changes to the play with signals and calls. ALL of this chess gaming is going on in 30 seconds between plays. If you go more than 30 seconds you are penalized. Many people outside of America think football is boring because the action is intermittent unlike the constant action of rugby or soccer. But if you understand the intense chess game being played on a 30 second clock between plays you see the game differently. This is also where the fan really gets involved. Everyone thinks they know the best play or type of play their team should run next. "I would go deep" or "they should run outside next, the defense is weak on the outside". Watching and following the strategy of your team is just as much fun as watching the physical play. Its a game of skill and athleticism for runners and receivers. It is a game of leverage and displacement for the linemen. Its a game of controlled aggression on offence and reckless abandon on defense. It's a game of field position, marching your team down field, pushing the defense back... yard by yard like a battle in a war. The defense is trying to stop that advance and get their team back on offence. It is one of the greatest games in the world! SO...ENJOY THIS GREAT GAME! And thank you for taking the time to learn about it. Cheers!

There have been a few long term paralysis cases though. Most recently and maybe most notably Ryan Shazier of the Steelers who is making a miraculous comeback. He says he wants to play again one day. If that is motivating his comeback, I am glad he set that goal, and hope he is one day at a level he would be able to achieve it but I pray he never plays another pertinent snap. If anything, victory formation only. Or he can work on his long snapping skills and be fg long snapper.

One time the QB scrambled to his right. I sort of floated off the RT just in case QB took off down the sideline. Perfect opportunity for a big hit. QB left his feet to throw over my head, and I buried the crown of my helmet into his chest. Too worried about laying a big hit, instead of simply tackling. My neck was jammed, and it hurt to look to my right for about a month. Lesson learned😅

I play QB, and being more inclined to run, I take big hits as well.

My favorite was kickoff and punt coverage. Find the guy who caught it, then full speed trying to rip their head off.Broke some guys arm once. So fun. Corner was fun but huge hitting on special teams coverage was the best. Simple Destroy mentality....

There's a lot of contact on the line, it's just the collisions that people remember.

Well put, I played both my whole life, big difference was rugby you get hit and then continue to get punched, stepped on, etc. Football is full gas highee impact for a second then over, reset and do it again.

@@Malik-ps4xs lineman would've been a better comparison, but you sound uninformed. We're talking about majorities and point of impact. 99.9% of plays do not result in a highly contested fumble. Every rugby play is a live ball. Best comparison is from Dhani Jones when he (an nfl player) goes to England to learn rugby. Look it up - it's a good comparison from someone at the top of the sport.

That’s my old school at 5:20. Lol I played at BYU. Yes there are deaths. But mostly lateron in life after the accumulation of concussions and injuries unfortunately many end up taking their own lives due to CTE. The movie concussion staring Will Smith shines an ugly light on the truth about it. I have began showing early signs of CTE and am in constant battle with it. The hard part is not depending on medication when it gets bad. But I’m using CBD and it works miracles. My Dad, Uncle brother and cousins played in the NFL and miraculously none of them are showing signs of it. My career was cut short in college due to multiple knee reconstructions from torn ligaments. I’m Tongan so I was raised playing both rugby and football. Rugby was harder as far as conditioning but footballs physical and mental demands on the body both short and long term are without doubt a lot higher. Great video!! Thanks for sharing! Your Tongan friend from Utah!! 🤙🏾

I hate to tell you, that a lot of these hits are very unimpressive. Most were basic tackles. Its when the guy flips and ragdolls in the air that we usually go "ohhh".

Adam, You may want to look up some of the old timers and how it use to be played - Dick Butkus a linebacker, Lawrence Taylor another linebacker, and Joe Greene a defensive lineman. These men played football back when it was FOOTBALL. I remember a coach back in the 1970's saying to us go out there and knock them in to the next world, it not against the law on the football field. In other words the sport was a bit rougher in days gone by. LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
