Yup, and thankfully it's the legends that people remember, not necessarily Olympic Gold medal winners. Who really remembers Sarah Hughes, but everyone who knows figure skating knows Michelle Kwan, Mao Asada, or Midori Ito, none of which ever won OG. And now Yuna's legacy really outshines pretty much every other female singles skater in history. Adelina is pretty much just a footnote in Yuna's own career due to the Sochi scandal. It's not Adelina that young skaters are looking up to, it's Yuna. And just look at all the promising young skaters coming out of South Korea now all because of her. Queen Yuna indeed.
@@prettydigitaljournal cheat your ass!!! Yuna's a woman of principles and integrity unlike other skaters I know that would sell their souls to the devil just to win... ewww! what a pathetic mind!
@@killbethy Don't put Mao Asada in that category. Because when you're talking about jumping techniques, Mao's are full of cheats too. If you disagree, then you know nothing about figure skating techniques. Go see for yourself and analyze it carefully.
The most disappointing thing about this whole thing was how the US commentators and news media tried so hard to justify such an obvious robbery of the gold medal by downgrading Yuna’s performance. And supposedly they are somewhat experts of the sport. They have eyes. They should have known how sickening all this is. How much gap in the skills there is between Yuna and Sotnikova. Shame on them for turning a blind eye to this gigantic scandal.
Dick Button saw and knew who the real champion was. Brian Boitano said in an interview with CNN that the scores between Yuna and Adelina should not have been so close and that Yuna Kim should have been two-time Olympic champion. Not too many Americans had the guts to say aloud on inter/national TV that Sochi 2014 ladies was rigged for Russians.
BBC commentator Robin Cousins was also appalled to see the results because he thinks Queen Yuna deserved to win. And I forgot to mention, Katarina Witt. She too was furious to see the results and it took a while for her to calm down when she was ranting in disgust.
Except most of the commentators AGREED Kim had the better performance, but they also largely agreed that Sotnikova's victory made sense under the scoring rubric. Take Kurt Browning, a four-time World Champion: “Yu-na Kim outskated [Sotnikova], but it’s not just a skating competition anymore-it’s math.” Even if you said that Sotnikova's higher execution score was unwarranted-fine, take it away. In fact, let's not even make it so that they tie here. Let's give Kim a full TWO point advantage on the execution score, so now you have Kim having a high margin in both her composite score (measuring artistry) and her execution score (measuring technical performance). What's the result? Sotnikova still wins. Sotnikova's base technical score was just about four points higher. If this was pre-2006, Kim would've coasted to gold-a judge's impression of the skater mattered more then, and Kim scored hire than Sotnikova on the impressionistic metric-composite score. Everyone saying "we have eyes!" is both nailing and missing the point. But the ICU wanted to downplay a judge's subjectivity, so they decided to emphasize "objective" standards that basically meant a TON of a skater's score could be calculated without even watching the skater. Eyes not required.
@@kangjae2406 Are you okay??? We are not living in the 1920's America. C'mon... Facepalm... threats... omg, you are really being intimidated by your own media or what?))))) And now you maybe think that Eteri Tutberidze's army of skaters are winning all posdible titles not by their talent but vy threatening every singke judge on Earth?)))) Listen to Ted Barton's commentary, maybe you'll finally open your eyes to a changed world))))
if anyone see That olimpic, most of people don't agree adeli is gold list. she also have a talent but a little bit. if she want to get gold, she need huge time toa practice. But she don't. so all people say she is gold theif.
You don’t even need all this slow mo, frame by frame analysis of their performances to realize that Yuna is the superior skater. It’s just so evident watching in real speed!
Whilst you’re right, I got more interested after the 2022 olympics and enjoyed the explanation and comparison. I’m new to the sport and find it interesting how much some interests are represented over a fair sporting environment.
@sofia s Lutz should be a lutz and not a loop! Proper deductions should have been taken for Adelina's take offs and edges, for her underrotations and her footwork is nowhere near level 4. Go watch her turns and clusters in the footwork, everything is flat or wrong edge. Her technique should have been judged proper way and given proper marks. Presentation and spins were judged fine.
@@AK-ff1zp we(russians) didnt know either(not all of us ofc, but i think many) I am disappointed in Adelina now(( So i understand your feelings, but dont say it like the whole nation is in fault. Im sorry for what Adelina have done, and i dont think its fair. And im not the only russian person who thinks this way, so, please, dont say it like we support her CRIME and lies, its not true. Don't demonize the nation, demonize specific people who participated in this deception, please.
Yuna’s jumps are always textbook. It’s just super clean and nice to look at. So many girls today looks floppy/sloppy when they jump. I never knew why. Now I do. Thank you!
as someone who has NO clue about figure skating but clicked on this after stumbling upon the controversy, this video did a great job explaining the difference between a good skater and bad skater to me. now i understand why kim yuna is considered one of the greats, and why sotnikova never went on to make a name for herself
I love how much effort has been put into this video therefore everything is clear as day! Also on a side note shame on the Olympic channel for changing Yuna Kim's Sochi FS video title.
it all just seens strange to me. She has never won something important, not even after the Olympics and she goes and wins gold. It's just crazy how she is in front of Yuna and Kostner. She should've been third or fourth
I have watched this controversy so many times but this is the most detailed and convincing one for me. Simple and easy to understand even from people outside of the sport. Yuna was robbed.
Found this video on recommendation after the disaster that was the women's event in 2022 Winter Olympics. Thanks for the quality explanation and breakdown of the different jump types in figure skating. I also have a newfound increased respect for Kim Yuna. I already knew that she was great from Vancouver 2010. But I missed the Sochi Olympics and only heard about the scandal/controversy from hearsay. Watching your analysis now, I understand better about why people said that she was robbed of the gold medal here. She definitely did a textbook, clean routine on ice.
Damn, I had no idea about these things and didn't know much about Ice skating but lord knowing this other chick that basically did the same jumps over and over won the Gold irks even me - I can't imagine how upset the skating community must've been! How did their technical scores compare? No one questioned the judges officially?
Yeah I didn’t know anything about the differences of jumps, but man do I know a lot more now lol. Even the dumbest person can’t miss that all of her jumps look the same when you put them side by side
Sotnikova received 75.54 in technical elements, while Kim scored 69.69. You can look this up on the ISU results website, though I don't recommend it since you'll just feel really angry at how unfair and corrupt the ISU (International Skating Union) is. I wasn't a fan back at the Sochi Olympics, so I can't say how most people felt, but a lot of fans and European commentators were going nuts at how ridiculous the scores were. Unfortunately, the skating world is still like this today, the judges still favor certain skaters and federations while doing everything they can to push down others.
This is such an incredible explanation. These jumps are usually super confusing, even in slow-motion. And you provided multiple explanations; since we all learn in different ways this really helps. Thank you!
The other girl just look so... wrong. Like now that everything is broken down by segment, she just looks like she's fumbling around trying to look correct. I cant believe they didnt give gold to the one that actually gave grace to figure skating. Yuna kim, you dont need that gold when you have a crown and a silver that's by far the shiniest compared to that dirty gold. You deserve the world, you will forever be our champion and Queen.
Her jump technique really was perfect but then SOCHI happened. Really should have been a double gold medalist, but she handled that travesty like the Queen that she is.
Simple Truth not quite) both flip and lutz (and considering the inside edge on a lutz it’s just a flip) are taken off from a loop position. Remember that in both cases left leg is used and it is placed on its outside edge.
I almost feel more bad for Adelina at this point. Everyone with eyes knows Yuna is the best. Adelina actually has to tell people she won the gold medal with a straight face.
@@AB-nk5wvlol don't feel bad. She's been bragging about it for a decade, boasting about she beat Yuna. She's also a proud invasion supporter, and now that her 10 years of over, she can brag about doping. It's too late, sadly. 😢
@@allier1867 if only they were patient enough to wait another 4 years, they would have had one fair and square. Now there is still a lingering bad taste for a lot of their skaters due to Sochi.
@@killbethy To be fair, they only pushed Adelina because Julia had a meltdown in both of her program. And with that being said, without rising popularity of skating in Russia after Sochi, maybe Alina and Evgenia would not have achieved their success. Now, I'm not defending Sotnikova, and she did not deserve the gold, I'm just taking it from another perspective, as her winning indeed did benefit skating inside Of Russia.
As time passes on, my emotion turns more from anger into pity. There is no way Adelina is proud of her gold medal. She knows it was rigged for her and she sees the 99.999% of comments saying Yuna is the real winner. In the end, Yuna came out the bigger winner. She already has her gold from 2010 and more people appreciate her 2014 performance because the Russians cheated 😂. They kind of shot themselves in the foot on this one.
Looking at the jumps frame by frame you can see how Yuna was more relaxed and controlled the whole time, while sotkinova shows the effort through flailed arms and barely making the rotations if at all. Just their shoulders positions is telling, Yuna neck stays elongated and Sotkinova scrunches hers as she uses her arms momentum to complete jumps
Yep, looking at that jumping technique broken down really makes it obvious why so many of the recent Russian ladies have ended up with horrible back injuries
What I don’t understand, why was there not an investigation into the results like in 2002 with the pairs? Why did the ISU let the placements stand when it’s clearly demonstrated that Sotnikova is NOT the perfect skater everyone thought she was. If you ask me she shouldn’t have even medaled.
Apparently there was fault with South Korea too. Normally, if a country feels as if they’ve been robbed of a medal, they would have to request an investigation but South Korea requested too late (apparently) so they didn’t investigate it.
South Korea filed a complaint however according to some news, it was already too late. I think ISU have this rule that if you want to dispute the win of someone, it should be within 24-48 hours or else it won't be investigated.
@@veenaive7769 well regardless of rules, that’s silly because she clearly put in a terrible cheating performance. But don’t question the skater, question the judges!!!
As an amateur skater, Adelina’s jumps look ridiculously hard on its own way 🤣 I can’t imagine doing everything so wrong. Just wowowowowow but it was mainly the IOC’s fault. They should have acknowledged their fault and award Yuna with the gold she deserved.
This is so frustrating i hope they one day investigate and revoke the Gold and give it to Yuna, she deserves the title of two time olymic champion. There have been many revisions in olympic and international competitions before, years after the fact. I hope they don't give up on this. The main tricky part is Russia's interference
For those wondering what the first comment says: "I can't speak English and I don't know much about figure skating, but even without this detailed explanation I couldn't help but feel the difference in these two skaters' abilities. Everyone there that day watching in person knows who deserved the gold medal."
Thank you for perfect explenaiton. I can't stand seeing wrong techniques are given more points than the correct techniques. Poor skaters who do thier bests to do things correct and get punished for it instead.
Well Tara didn't even have a lutz when she competed. Her situation winning Gold over Kwan is the same as this Adelina winning gold over Yuna. Of course she supported Adelina.
I really appreciate you actually taking the time to explain it and explain what a lutz actually is and really knowing skating and not just yelling ‘pre-rotation’ because some pre-rotation is fine, it’s so so much more than that

Yuna's gold was robbed. Simple. We have eyes and that is what we saw. Yuna is the true legend incomparable to all the doped skaters with scores all inflated. Figure skating after Yuna's era has gone to turn into a circus show. Sad..
Well... That's a really misleading title. 😂 It's really nice how you explain the different jumps and actually show what was done wrong. I also think that it's very professional and mature that you didn't use the skaters names during the comparisons. Keep going! Your videos are very interesting!
I think the title is meant to be sarcastic. Lol. I clicked on the video thinking someone has the guts to do a slow-mo comparison between Yuna and Adelina and says the latter is better? Very funny.
@@kciddor19 Sure, it was probably meant to be sarcastic, but you don't know that until you watch the actual video. And also, there are people who still think Adelina is better than Kim Yuna.
The curve mark that Yuna Kim makes on the ice is like beautiful cursive. Thank you for making skating analysis that is understandable! Now I know what to look for in skaters.
Very nice video on the explanations of the different jumps. For a casual viewer like me, now I understand a little better on the technical aspects of FS. :) Thanks a lot!
Hi Brett!! 😁 This video was very well done. I see plenty of poorly done lutzes, especially those doing quads. Either the take off is turned into a flip or the landing is incomplete. I've seen skaters still get full credit for the jump when they should not have. The posture of some of these skaters drive me crazy. Slouched forward. Landings are not held for the count of three when the jump or jump series or combinations are complete. Ugh! Lol
Facts… Yuna is textbook technique plus art. Also fortunately, we have eyes and can clearly see that if you cheat, we can see and you will be caught lol.
Damnnn she was ABSOLUTELY ROBBED I knew it but never knew about all the details!! Truly such a great analysis with some humor as well! Some amazing quality content
I'm so sick of competitive skating. This "sport" is corrupt. If skaters keep being awarded points for their improper technique and are winning based on that improper technique, what is the point of competing? I'd be furious if I were a good skater with the correct technique and had been training for years.
I was about to throw hands at the title but i'm so happy now someone has analyzed it and it very clearly shows how Adelina is an average or lower skater and Yuna is miles ahead of her. Scary how Adelina has a skating school.🙂 i love how Yuna just stood there like "😐" knowing she should've won and not giving Adelina any fake smile or anything. Honest reaction! I love Yuna
i already knew yuna did better overall by watching the entire thing as simply a fan of skating but having the techniques explained like this makes it even more obvious jesus
watch 2021 russian junior test skating event, a young girl who did quad toe, some people call that jump a pure technique. I sighed so much when I saw those comments because her quad was exactly like sonikova and many other russians who dominate the skating nowadays. huge pre rotation on ice gives me goosebumps (in a creepy way)... figure skating is corrupted so much more since sotnikova won the title,
lol there's a reason why i dont watch singles anymore.. we got questionable jumps rewarded with high scores, no emotive choreography, no flow.. they dare call singles figure skating when in fact it's just jumping competition on ice.
Power of bad politic and how ice skating club is rotten themselves. Can not tell truth than they are rotten and should not be there. But as we all know. Rotten people
The happens in dressage as well. It’s not nice to see this going on in another sport but it is good to know we’re not the only ones dealing with this crap. I know next to nothing about figure skating but I love watching it so when I saw the performances and found out Adelina won over Yuna I knew something was wrong. Even an untrained eye like myself could tell something was off with that result and this video confirmed it, it’s great to see the technical aspects broken down so you can actually wrap your head around what’s going on
Yu-na remains a legend of this sport. I don't even think most people even remember Adelina. She will always be the skater that won as a result of corrupt judging. For me, Sochi 2014 was when ladies figure skating died and soon began the "dominance" of Russia with Eteri Tutberidze's abusive training methods and being rewarded for that with inflated scores. There is no longevity in ladies skating anymore. Just one little Russian girl who retires before 18.
@@nelliee6736 But in retrospect being a Russian was enough power to bribe the tech panels and judges. That's why the first person she hugged after winning an Olympic gold medal was the judge not her coach. She was no victim. After Sochi, she went around doing interviews and bragged about how she's better than Yuna and a deserved champion. She had no shame and accused Yuna of bad sportsmanship because Yuna was quiet about the scandal and didn't defend her. That's the girl you want to defend?
