So I am a Christian who loves history and try to study the Old Testament. I actually run a Bible study in my home and we tend to study the Old Testament. Presently we are studying Exodus. I cannot tell you how these lectures are helping me with the history of the Jewish community. I have such respect for your religion. This text would ramble on if I were to go into detail. May I just say Thank You from a senior citizen in Wheaton, Illinois who loves all my Jewish friends.

Wouldn't it be necessary to Christians to get their is no old testament but only old habits to take very unfair translations over the real text?

Very interesting information. I was raised in Monmouth County, NJ as a Catholic but my father always said our family had been Jewish. My DNA confirms this so I'm glad to find this information available. Even more than that, I love your style and sense of humor. I live in Utah and no one gets my jokes but you would. You are a breathe of fresh air for me. Thank you!

Found your channel as a non-religious history buff, loving the lectures and its very helpful in understanding economies, politics, governments and trends in history since the Jewish community was such a critical part. Also, loved the Charlemagne joke, that was great haha.

Appreciate this historical perspective of Ashkenazim as it relates to why we had to relocate over + over again throughout millennia. The who what + whys as well as where, from the Middle East beginnings and particularly across Europe. Especially enjoy learning about the everyday lives throughout this period + the rebellious (nonconforming) reactionaries, ie women whom I'm filled with love + respect for more with every lecture (as opposed to the wealthy bums trying to evade taxes) ps Also love the art + images you've been able to provide - Bravo!

Many Catholics are buried in a catholic cemetery. My husband's family are all buried in a catholic cemetery. This makes it nice, so you can visit the whole family and future generations are able to see their ancestors and maintain the beauty of their plots. Its comforting to see your religious Icons, knowing your family members are were they with their relatives.

Thank you, Dr. Abramson, for a most informative lecture. I myself have had the privilege of visiting the synagogue in Speyer and seeing an old Torah roll there. That was about 40 years ago when there were only services on a irregular basis (most Jewish American soldiers at the time). Now I have heard that there are regular Sabbath services in Speyer. I think that the bald man might have been a medieval monk, but it is only a guess. I am very much looking forward to the next lectures. Stephan

Re the unique importance of the Chevra Kadisha in Jewish societies, I think there are two specific reasons: 1. Caring for the dead is often a "chesed shel emes" (true kindness), as the Torah refers to it, as you cannot expect anything in return. It is therefore vital that the kehilah care for them, since otherwise they may not be cared for at all. 2. Since the proper care for the dead is viewed as critical for the sake of the soul and its ascendance to heaven, as is the swift burial of the body, it is vitally important that a fixed team, properly trained in all the relevant rituals, is always on hand to treat every Jew who dies.

Why is the term “Jew” used when there is no J in the Yisraeli language?
@justinhall3243
@justinhall3243 2 года назад
The English word Jew comes from the German / Yiddish word Juden where in German the J makes a Y sound.
@laurathornton5828

@@justinhall3243 does this apply to the text as it is written and when it was written?
@justinhall3243
@justinhall3243 2 года назад
@@laurathornton5828 No, in the original Hebrew as you pointed out there is no J sound just as there is no J sound in German either. I was just pointed out that our word for Jew comes from German and that is why it has the J spelling instead of a Y. Using the J sound is something that is particular to English. If you and I were conversing in Hebrew or German we would be using the Y sound instead, Yuden or יְהוּדִי

...second comment : Makes sense: Charles de Bald... Or it meant NOT the ...bald ( Kale), but ...BOLD ( Boldwin, Baldwin , Baldur ... Bald : who dares ! ) or something wrong : bald , he coud never be king, even not a warrior among the Franks. Pippin SHAVED Thierry, so he became a monk...A warrior should have LONG and plenty of hair... You make my hypothesis of "mixed" roots , partly jewish, even stronger.

Sir, .. What do you mean 'jewish civilization' when your origins is european and jews are descendants of judah son of Jacob (a.k.a. Israel). How can you claim to be 'children of Israel' when that claim starts only by the presence and prophethood of Jacob (a.k.a. Israel)? ... you have masacred history sir.
