Spot on with your advice. You just never know how people will judge you during an interview. One time I was thinking of changing Helicopter bases within a company I was already employed with. I got off work after night shift and drove by the base. I met with the Aviation Base Manager. It went fairly well and I drove home afterwards. Time went on and my transfer was never approved. When I queried why, I was told "because I was wearing blue jeans". Well hell, it wasn't a job interview. Or was it...
This is excellent advice! As someone who works for a major defense contractor I can safely say clearance investigators check every single thing especially social media! Heed CW's advice on this he is 100% on point!!
Holy crap when you went tough love mover mode the Major/Lcdr came right out! Gave me flashbacks of the squadron hahah! So much respect for you Mover thank you for what you provide to all of us!
Tough love Mover! LOVE IT! Few things annoyed me more as an IP than studs asking questions that are in the easy pubs. Vol 3, -1, 3-3, 3-1, Inflight Guide, Squadron standards. Ask me an educated question about the nuances of something you read, or ask me where to find it. Don't ask me for the answers.
Great video. The social media aspect is important when applying for many jobs even in the private sector. I've watched assignment nights on RU-vid and there is a lot of assignments outside of flying fighters. So do what you can for your country and don't stress on flying fighters. Support missions are just as important. I would hope the military recognizes your value to recruiting.
Excellent advice, Mover. I'll share my story if you don't mind in regard to a back-up plan. I had my Commercial Pilot Certificate and Certified Flight Instructor Certificate prior to my enlistment. I wasn't a fighter pilot, I went into the Army National Guard and was a maintiner and eventually UH-60 Crew Chief. On the civilian side, I was flying full time a Cessna Caravan. When I departed from the Guard, I had enough maintenance experience to challenge for the Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic Certificate. I've held that for a few years and just earned my Inspection Authorization. I'm only 34. Start early and focus. I soloed on my 16th birthday. If you want, you can solo a sailplane (glider) at 14. Don't ever be afraid to try.
Oh I don't know; maybe since 420 is another street name for weed (still federally illegal) and then saying how your running from the law?? Yea, that's not going to go over too well if/when you apply at a unit for a pilots slot. They don't want you smoking a joint while operating a multi-million dollar plane and potentially crashing into the side of a mountain because your stoned off your ass and can't react fast enough.
Hi Mover, I’ve been watching your videos for many months now and I was wondering, what’s the best way to become a fighter pilot? I heard there’s a pilot shortage, so will I be guaranteed a fighter slot? What is OTS? What is OCS? Just kidding😁 Great video as usual.
You may have a channel but you also have already accomplished yourself and know how to carry yourself. So your advice is very good for the young folks.
CW, that was a great teaching moment for the younger group, to your point, my callsign was sweetness and after I retired from flying Apache Gunships for 20 years, I never had it in my email add, ect..... only now do i feel comfortable having ah64 a/d sweetness since I earned it...... God Bless Rex
Couldn't agree more. I posted a video on my instagram and facebook of flying on the pipeline and having the pipeline go in between windmills. Got told by a couple of my buddies in the Regionals that told me to take it down, because even though it is what the job requires me to do, it isn't the wisest thing to post. teachable moments. same with some of my videos I posted when flying in AFG as a door gunner in the chinook.
Well said Sir........ the best advice I ever received was " the world owes you a living - all you have to do is bust your ass for it". I have since modified that to.... "when your Ship comes in - it's size will be directly proportional to the harbor you've prepared." ......... I am (personally) happy with a small river system and a well balanced canoe ..............;-p
Thanks for answering my question! Sorry for asking some of the same questions you get a lot, honestly didn't think it'd make it on the episode anyway and was kind of throwing a lot out there. I'd say BogiDope and you are the two best sources of info on the guard unit stuff that I've found. Also, I actually did not know that AF had a guaranteed pilot slot before OTS like Dylan thought so glad I know that now! Sorry again didn't mean to sound like someone grubbing for easy answers with an internet full of them I just enjoy hearing your perspective and the little golden nuggets of advice I often find when listening to you.
I work with pilots everyday but they are extremely busy and hardly ever have time so this channel was heaven sent for me and you tell us what they won’t that’s awesome
Hey mover I’m very glad you made this video cause my daughter wanted to go to the marines but as a high school kid she is very hard headed and putting dumb things on Instagram! I told her be careful on what you put out there cause if you go to the marines then later decide to do something else like try for a special ops or anything else it can come back and haunt you. So I’m glad you said it cause she can see it coming from a US fighter pilot!!! Thanks for all you do.
I have no aspirations to become a fighter pilot. However I work as a recruiter for a major company and every word about social media you've said is true. When it comes to deciding between hundreds of applicants you don't want to give a recruiter a reason to say no to you. Love the content
CW! I think you have great potential to be President!!! Let us all know if want to run!!! Of course this means I loved every word and every opinion. You have a talent!
If your university does not have ROTC you can apply to be a guest student at another university which does offer the program. I did this and drove down once a week for classes and leadership lab. I didn't get a pilot slot - one thing I did was admit to a one-time - seriously here folks - ONE TIME - use of marijuana because I thought honesty was the best policy. Well, the colonel informed me that it was good that I was honest, integrity is a big part of officer training, but that marijuana use of any kind required a waiver from a general. He told me that it wasn't impossible but that it wasn't likely. This was in the early/mid-90s when the military were cutting-back and pilot slots were hard to come by so that pretty much killed my chances. Look folks, I was NEVER a pothead, I never even really liked it. I still don't use it and cannabis is legal in the state in which I live. But admittance of ANY use, even experimental, can kill your chances, so you'd better believe that any references that you have to any federally-illegal substances will haunt you. This was over 20 years ago, but I don't think much has changed in that regard. But I went and earned my private pilot license and instrument rating and I fly now as a pretty serious hobby. That being said I really think that air traffic control would be a great career path for anyone who likes and is interested in aviation but maybe can't qualify for a pilot slot for whatever reason. I think it's a great post-military career and something which I think I would have enjoyed. And it's a wide-open career path right now from what I understand.
Ack! I struck the tough love nerve. However, the advice you give isn't just helpful in military, but in a civilian job too. There are so many topics that could be asked and haven't. Here are some examples I'm trying to determine while I continue my research and may be helpful to the future airmen: I am in the process of applying for the military reserves. One of the benefits as you are aware of being a reservist is, you get to choose which base you report to. I do qualify for multiple bases as they are within the same distance from my house. As I have researched the cities amenities, cost of living, and economy in case my employer downsizes or I just want to change companies. I do wonder if bases provide the same standard services. I have read where some exchanges vary in size, or are they the same size in square footage? (Probably shouldnt matter when choosing a base, but it may tip the scale just that little bit?) I've also looked at the hotels that are at the bases, while some do have bad reviews, others have great reviews. (From what I understand, as a reservist, this is typically where I would stay) I have went to the bases home page and reviewed the information there in regards to which active units are based at these locations. (Watching the Blue Angels/Thunderbirds practice is much more enjoyable than watching C17s land and take off on my time off) You have discussed which AFB you report to, which is in a different state. I was able to determine it is due to you being a Jaguars fan or a Buccaneers fan. Did you have to receive any waivers in order to be reporting to a base so far from home? Are there any other points of interests I should research I am missing from your experience? One interesting DYK item I found was reservists are able to live in base housing! And even more interesting, it looks like civilians can too. Separately, you have discussed a possible movie for the books. I have been trying to locate the last one where you discussed, but it really does seem like the idea went cold. I'm sure there are a lot of inspiring directors/actors/actresses etc out there, would it be possible to send some type of challenge to followers out there to maybe to create a video trailer for some of the books as a contest? Us followers vote on the best, whatever reward for them, etc? I noticed you have dabbled in to this realm yourself.
More good advice sir, especially on the social media stuff. I also just ordered a shirt because my wife says I have to many airplane shirts. I will tell her this one is a Life Lesson shirt and not an airplane shirt. I'll let ya know how it works out!
Know what "Assume" means? Here it is: "It makes an Ass out of You and Me." Don't assume ANYTHING having to do with computers or any digital media. It's there forever and can be found.
The funny thing about the social media warning is that it is almost as important in civilian life (Obviously, military careers are even more strict, but still). Future employers will never like any negative connotations with you (alcohol, drugs, extreme political views of any kind), and stuff like that ALWAYS turns up at some point. Hell, it's even a problem for future relationships in some cases. Just be careful.
It is incomprehensible to me that anyone now is on Facebook, Instagram, any social media of any kind in this day and age. The downsides are endless and the upside is nonexistent. Please listen to CW on this if you absolutely can't live without your selfies broadcast to the world. It's difficult enough just to get accepted for a pilot slot, you need everything you can going for you.
My username is easy to explain, got ____Osprey on Xbox and I changed it to Ospreybravo. I consistently use it as a name online because it gets me called Osprey and besides my actual name it's something I recognize. If I use a different name it gets confusing, so I keep it simple.
Mover, thanks for the video. Can you comment on survival training? I have heard some crazy stories about how they teach you how to withstand torture by actually torturing you. Is that true? Thanks for everything.
Yes, they teach you basic stuff in the instance you are captured by the enemy. But it's not if you break, it's how long you can hold out before you break and start spilling your knowledge to them. The whole point is so that you can resist giving classified information to said enemy so they can then counter US operations and "defeat us". As a fighter pilot or any military personnel that's on the front lines you will know to some extent classified information. As a fighter jock you will know the weapon's systems inside and out, know what radio channels to use, classified info on possible troop movements, ect...
Hi Mover Just a quick question, how did you get your callsign? Is there a story you could tell us related to your campaign of is it one of those 'if I told you I'd have to kill you' moments? ( -No- pun intended)
Saw this word to the wise you can't hide it it will be found regardless of your user name or settings. This is from someone that is paid to find it. Never post it never let your friend re-share it as it will be found
I love your vids. I had a question that I have always wanted to know about the Air Force, this video is kinda related to it. I worked at an F.B.O years ago, the primary customers were the Air Force and the Navy. Every day we had T-45's T-1's, F-18's and T-38. I later worked for the Navy's Training Wing 1, my question is about the Air Force's 'Culture'. I got the impression that incidents were career ending in the Air Force. I witnessed a T-38 try and turn around on a taxi way when he made a wrong turn, he got stuck, his right main fell off the edge of the taxi way's concrete so the aircraft was sitting on the strut, he knew he was done. This Major, an IP, was visible upset, the student was driving, but he 'knew' that his career was done even though he stopped the student and followed his SPO. I also witnessed a T-45 land with pine cone's and pine straw and limbs stuck in his gear, his AC HIT the trees... the story was that the student pilot got confused and pulled the flaps up on final or down wind leg. The instructor took control of the AC and saved them, he was cool about he was another 0-4. It was the same situation, a student pilot screwed up, the Navy's incident was more significant, but the Air Force IP knew his career was over, the Navy IP was going to fail the student he knew it wasn't his fault. I've worked in aviation for years and I have heard so many horror stories about Air Force pilots and minor incidents with factors beyond their control ruining their careers that would be over looked in the Navy. I've also heard other stories about the culture in the Air Force beings brutal and unforgiving, 'in office' politics and brown nosing being a big part of it. Could you tell us more, if its true or not? thanks
@@CWLemoine , First I meant a T-37 Tweet not a T-38 and If your asking about the USAF guy, I was just a kid at the time. He was visibly upset, we were trying to calm him down, the guy had quit smoking years ago but he bummed a smoke off me. We were trying to help by grabbing some A/C jacks and making it "go away". I have heard so many stories thruout my life about the USAF, that a minor mishap would kill someone career even though the major factors were beyond the pilots control like the T-37 story. Are those stories true?
@@HK556 that's not to say I don't love Mass Effect. Just different series. Shepherd was kind of a play off the Sheepdog/wolf metaphor for law enforcement. Spectre was definitely influenced because I thought Spectres were cool from ME1.
I plan on cataloging my journey to become a pilot to help those that are interested in the vocation. Is that ok to have on social media? Or should I go dark during the process. Thanks again for the great videos. Will buy the book series soon
It's a term you'll eventually get to know and love. Technique vs procedure. Technique is just a recommendation based on experience and common practice. Procedures are hard and fast rules.
Quick question do you believe a lack of a social media footprint would set any alarms off because I really don’t have much and don’t want it to seem really sketch
@18:20....Mover has infinitely more patience for LAZY people than I do. Wise words per usual, but c'mon folks....Know this: Fighter pilots are a BREED apart. They are THE BEST. There's college, and then there's the Ivy League, k? Fighters are Ivy. And like the Ivy League...to get fighters, you have to be VERY SMART. You have to be focused, driven, goal oriented, persistent, tenacious, aggressive, a SELF starter. A warrior. Or you're going to be flying a desk, or a C-130.
Question, I talked with a person at Langley Air Force base and he said that recruiters know just about everything there is to know about the airforce, and options. Okay so I know you said that there is a enlisting recruiter and an assessions recruiter. He said that he never heard about them. How do I get ahold of the assessions recruiter? Im close to the end of my school year unless I get a second because this is a 1 year program with a 2nd year possible. So I am calling people and also trying to find schools for flight training, so I want to be prepared. Thanks for your help Mr. Lemoine!
@@CWLemoine well see thats the thing, I am in a school that gives a diploma of graduation at the end of the one year program and can be made a two year degree if chosen too. It is a School of Discipleship. So I wouldnt be getting a 4 year degree. At least here.
As long as you are a U.S. citizen I don't see why it should matter at all. As long as you meet all the other requirements your chances should be the same
Don't discount the fact a perspective employer may have you "friend" them so they can see all of your "private" stuff. Don't do dumb stuff in the first place and certainly don't post it for the world to see!
Hey CW I’m a high school graduate planning on going to college for 4 years and was wondering how I can pretty much guarantee a pilot slot after college. Any responses will help thx.
You are saying that putting you out there will prevent you from getting into an other squadron but what about for example the demo pilots of f16 / a10 etc is it the same for them because some of them are big on instagram ?
To add what Lemoine is saying, the demo teams mission is to inspire the next generation to join the military. I think part of the job is a bit of public affairs, why they also go to schools to lecture and get interviewed by the media. Become the gateway and/or the publics face of the branch. Lemoine's mission is to sell books :) However, I believe him helping inspire future airmen through this channel was an unexpected blessing.
@11:35.....Dylan: If you can't fly better than you write, your ass is toast. Suggestion: LEARN how to write. Learn about PARAGRAPHS. Then when you get over your collegiate confusion, WATCH the videos again....because The Path has ALREADY been laid all out. It's the CW Lemoine Roadmap. CAN you read a map Dylan?
mover, you are helping thugs become pilots by telling them to hide the fact that they are thugs. you are better off doing nothing so the military will know they are thugs instead of hiring them
