This video will show you the results of using a soda blaster on some fire-rusted steel wheels. Soda blasters use course baking soda as their media. This is less abrasive than sand blasting, it's biodegradable, and it has a cleaning effect on the finished product. It can be used on many materials including steel, iron, and wood for dirt, paint, or rust removal.

That's funny because I keep seeing people claim soda won't strip rust off, yet obviously it can. Also funny it worked so quickly with you just skipping around the part, I'm guessing the longer you stay in one spot the cleaner it will get. Good video, thanks

Yes, works pretty well for me. I have another video of a cast iron kettle with heavier rust. It's not a perfect job but does well. These wheels had rust from a fire so it was very superficial.

It removes loose rust; it will not remove hard rust. If that wheel was blasted to clean metal it would be grey, not black. The black you see is magnetite, the harder layer of rust close to the surface.

good job, good vid, but you should be more careful by wearing gloves, cause those blasters will shoot that powder right up under your skin if you have a foul up, not hating, just saying

yeah, I've seen brutal results from even just plain old air nozzles, good job on the wheel though :) what are you going to use it for

Actually I have 4 of those wheels and they're still unused. This was just a learning exercise for me and I don't have any projects in mind yet. I also have videos for cast iron and wood.

Mate soda wont cleam that properly. Soda never strips the metal back white metal clean. There will always be contaminates in the tiny pores and fissures in the steel surface. Soda is good for paints and body fillers only. You meed to dustless blast that with a rust inhibiting solution and then prime it to truely remove the rust completely.

Where did you get the nozzle tip at the end of it?

Is reusing the Soda possible.

Not advisable even if you could separate the soda from the debris. Unlike sand, the soda particles are partially destroyed in the blasting so the recovered soda would be a smaller particle the second time around.

Here's a link with some starter equipment/material information. You'll have to find a place based on where you live. This link is for a Canadian store chain. It's not cheap. You need the blaster, media, safety equipment, and a good air compressor to get started. www.princessauto.com/en/content/soda-blasting
