While considering options for covered bed storage on my 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 L5P Duramax with an 8 foot bed, I came across exactly what I was looking for - a soft, canvas, easily removable truck topper. I hadn't seen one on long bed or a Silverado, so I figured a video might be worth it.

They've been removed since then lol good catch. Dealer license plate frames are one thing, it's another when they deface the vehicle.

I agree on the silver. I think the tan color would look real good with my abyss grey truck with blacked out accents. Why the don’t do black rails and poles is beyond me. The chrome poles reminds me of camping with my parents back in the 80s!

Tan with a gray would be awesome. Ha, and yes, very much like old tent-pole hardware. Maybe the cost of powder coating or finishing the aluminum isn't worth it to them? It is 2021 and black trim has been popular for a long time.

I know it's an old video but how do you find the windows in the cold snow. I live up in canada and had a best top on an old ford but the back window snapped in the cold

Have you thought of putting small strong magnets along the back flap as an alternative to Velcro for securing to the tailgate?

I wouldn't want to scratch the paint but yes I've thought of that, too. If coated in rubber/plastidip it might work or embedded in the canvas. Definitely a good idea if you could execute it. Definitely sick of the Velcro and it comes undone on long road trips with a trailer.

Hi, how was it towing without side windows on the topper, visibility wise?

It's fine. I've towed back and forth across the county and it didn't affect me. Tow mirrors are all I ever look at and side windows on the topper wouldn't add much, if any, visibility out the rear window. Plus, extra space to haul in the bed. Your rear view mirror visibility will be lesser as the rear zip in the window can get dirty and hard to see through, but again, tow mirrors are more than enough.

Curious why you decided on the softtopper and not the Bestop Supertopper?

Bestop doesn't make one for this year Silverado or bed length, that I could find, and I had heard good things about Softopper. Also, I prefer this look without the added side windows of the Bestop. My neighbor has this one in black on his Ford shortbed and seeing it in person helped. I don't know enough about the Bestop to make a 1:1 comparison, but it is the first one I shopped before coming across the Softopper.

I’ve been looking at this as a possible truck tent, but it doesn’t seem like you can zip the back from inside the bed.

The zippers aren't double sided but they zip down so you could easily have the bar not attached and reach through or have the tailgate down.

Hi! Im wondering if you have any tips on insulating the truckbed/soft top canopy? I just had a rough cold/damp trip in the pnw and need tips ASAP lol

I wouldn't personally add anything to the soft top itself as it needs to stretch and shrink with weather and use and be folded up. You could run separate fabric around the scaffolding. My biggest reco would be to just get a better sleeping bag if you're back there, like a winter-specific bag. Happy camping!

Which clamps did you use? The utility clamps cause the rail to canter in towards the bed when I tighten them. I’m thinking I might need to the other style of clamps. I have a 2016 Duramax, 6’ bed

I used the ones that came with the top. I just tightened in alternating positions to keep it level.

So weird my f150 rails did canter in torwards the bed, but it worked good and in my opinion my old f150 softopper fitted way better than my gmcs, idk how much i like the gap between the cab and the flapping of the back not being secure by the plastic holder

How do vinyl windows hold up for you? I'm from Canada and winter where I live is brutal (-40 F), I'm just scared that the window will get brittle and crack when it's too cold.

Great question. I didn't have any issue last winter or this summer travelling in the southeast. However, we didn't have any minus 40 temps. I'm in a colder part of Montana for this winter so we'll see. I don't know that there's anything special about the vinyl but it at least feels OEM-quality so I'd imagine any experience you have with other vinyl window items, like Jeep tops, would be similar. My only issue has been cleaning it with all the dirt wanting to scuff the window. Still, no major issues. The canvas, however, does get quite a bit stiffer in the winter than the summer.

Do you have any trouble with it leaking around the cab corners when it rains ?

Great question. I just checked the clearnance. Even though mine is farther back than suggested, the corners are covered near the cab. Although, I could see it potentially getting wet with a ton of rain, but we don't get a lot. I think if you install it closer to the cab and tighten the front straps it would be ok. My neighbor who's had his for a few years and takes it hunting didn't mention anything.

Towed back and forth across the country. Hard to tell because i put the giant tires and wheels on which ate the mileage. If there is any i don't think it'd be huge. But i leave it on all the time as it's so handy.

Yes, 18 months later. I love it. People ask me all the time about it when I'm in town. It's stayed clean with my pressure washer and a scrub brush for harder spots of mud and dirt even after not washing it all winter. The canvas has held up and clips are fine. I don't think I could live without it. I've towed back and forth across the country as well as other regional long distance tows and it's been great. I think my only issue is with the velcro on the rear tailgate as with higher winds and towing (as in South Dakota) it wasn't strong enough to hold the rear flap down, although the metal bar always stayed put so it was more of a mental nuisance of seeing the bottom flap in the wind than actual problem. My friend just tucks his into the tailgate. I still highly recommend it.
