Solar PV Diverters, Mixergy cylinders and Caleffi Antifreeze Valves

In this episode we commission 2 air source heat pump installations and link up the Solar PV Diverters to generate some of the hot water as opposed o sending energy back to the grid.
We also show you how to install the Mixergy PV Switch.
We have installed Mixergy Smart Hot Water cylinders along side Mitsubishi Ecodan. We also ask the question 'Do you need to treat the system with Glycol/Antifreeze?'
No not necessarily if you install the Caleffi Anti Freeze Valve. The valve will release the water in the primaries in the event of a system failure in very cold winters. If the water temperature reaches 3 degrees or below, the valve activate, releasing the water to prevent damage to the pipework and more importantly the heat pumps Plate Heat Exchanger. Really informative videos thanks. Have you found an alternative HP manufacturer that is more compatible with Mixergy cylinders than Mitsubishi for the incremental hot water control? Thanks.

Hi Phil, thank you. The Vaillant Arotherm Plus works much better with Mixergy cylinders and Samsungs new HT Heat Pump is projected to be another good alternative.

Are manufacturers happy for antifreeze valves to be fitted rather than glycol used? Does not putting the correct mix of antifreeze in not void the warranty?

Hi Grant, as long as the system has antifreeze protection it ‘shouldn’t’ affect the warranties. Vaillant approved this on their system earlier in the year and I know that Mitsubishi also support it. That said, I can’t speak for every manufacturer, ultimately if you are unsure, speak to the manufacturer if you are installing various brands.

Shouldn't the antifreeze valves be fitted at the lowest point (underneath of the heatpump), so that the pipes (and heatpump!) would be drained in case of the combination of grid failure and below zero outdoor temperatures (or in fact watertemperatures below approx. 4°C)??

They are fitted inline with the flow and return of the heat pump as per manufacturers instructions

@@dorewoodman: of course they have to be fitted in the flow and return line. Fine. But in such a way, that the system can fully drain through the lowest anti freeze valve and the system can be aerated through the highest anti freeze valve. And did you check, whether the monoblock unit is fully drained if the flow and return line are drained? If so, it's fine. If not, there's still a risk involved.
