In this video we’re going to explore the full story of what happened on Akuze in Mass Effect. Specifically we’ll be taking a look at all outcomes to the quest, UNC: Dead Scientists in Mass Effect 1, including some unique dialogue that happens if Shepard has the Sole Survivor background. We’ll also take a look at some other unique dialogue that happens in Mass Effect 2 and 3.

We’re first introduced to the story of Akuze during the character creation screen in Mass Effect 1. If you choose the Sole Survivor psychological profile, you’ll learn that Commander Shepard’s entire unit was wiped out by a thresher maw attack on Akuze, but not much more information is given at this stage.
Akuze was a new human colony under development by the Systems Alliance during the 2170s. When all contact was lost with the colonial pioneer team in 2177, the Alliance sent in a recon unit to discover what had happened. During this scouting mission, the recon team was attacked by a thresher maw - a giant wormlike monster that spits acid. Everyone except for Shepard was lost and that was the official story for a long time. A freak accident that occurred when humanity tried to colonize a harsh uncharted world.
But there is more to this story than first meets the eye. We can uncover a deeper conspiracy at work when we embark on the quest, UNC: Dead Scientists. When you approach the base on Ontarom you won’t exactly get a friendly welcome. A pack of mercenaries opens fire on sight, with more of them waiting inside the facility. Once you’ve dispatched all the enemies you can confront the ringleader of these assassinations… an Alliance soldier named Corporal Toombs. We can learn about what really happened on Akuze from the story of Toombs.
So the attack on the Alliance recon unit didn’t happen by chance. The Cerberus scientists allowed it to happen to study the thresher maws. They may have even deliberately attracted the thresher maw, which is exactly what they did to Admiral Kahoku’s unit in Mass Effect 1, as well. After the attack Cerberus captured Corporal Toombs and ran experiments on him, injecting thresher maw acid into his veins to study the effects. When he got free, he tracked down and killed all the Cerberus scientists he could find.
There are four different ways this quest can end depending on your decisions.
There is also some unique dialogue if you chose the Sole Survivor background. When you enter the base Corporal Toombs will recognize Shepard.

There's an extra dialogue if you bring Wrex to that mission, instead of Toombs, Wrex is the one who says "Shepard was there, that's enough proof"

If you ask me they never really changed, they were still doing sketchy things in ME2. Shep can either put on the blind act or acknowledge that yeah their terrible but you're using them, but either way Shep is kind of guilty of poor morality choice.

@@theonlyone38 ME2 does a great job in trying to manipulate you into thinking Cerberus isnt that bad (anymore) while also demonstrating during certain decisions/situations how wrong that impression is.

It irks me so much how Shepard never brings this up in the sequels. This alone is reason enough not to trust Cerberus in ME2 but the game deliberately pretends it never happened. You do get a message from Toombs in ME2 but nothing ever comes of it. It was a massive missed opportunity to not follow up on this mission.

It'd be nice to hear a Sole Survivor unique dialogue to Cerberus along the lines of "I'm sorry I'm having a lot of trouble hearing you over the sound of my unit's blood on your hands."

@@Aurora-313 Mass Effect 2 is a isolated sequel. A sequel that has almost nothing to do with it's predecessor. It wipes the slate clean removing what made Mass Effect 1 so good. In both gameplay and in story. It was as if Bioware was ashamed of the original and went out of it's way to throw out everything that was built up. The opening of Mass Effect 2 tells us that. The rest of the game is about Shepard adjusting really fast to the new status quo. When it's all over Shepard finally leaves Cerberus but wasted so much time on a new insignificant threat. Instead of warning the galaxy into preparation for the real threat.

@@spartanq7781 @The Spartan Yeah, I know. ME2 was my starting point into the series back in 2009. I actually really enjoyed it and was shocked at the jarring difference between ME1 and 2 when I finally played the former. Spent ages trying to find a copy of ME1 just to get the whole story. Still, there's always fanfic to plug the gap. At the same time, I don't think the Collectors were _that_ insignificant - they were covertly hatching a reaper. But what pisses me off is you can't immediately ditch Cerberus and head to the Alliance. Imagine how fun having those two distinct campaigns would be? Ah well. Its better than most modern games. Back when the story was the selling point, not the graphics.

@@Aurora-313 Mass Effect 2 released in 2010 and it was my first Mass Effect game. The Collecters are insignificant. The Reapers don't need them as evident in Mass Effect 3.

@@spartanq7781 2010. My apologies. But I concede your point. In the grand scheme of things, they were somewhat inconsequential. It honestly would've shaken things up alot of we had Collector enemies in ME3, Shepard destroyed 'a' base, not all of the Collectors. And it would've been a great reminder of Harbinger's existence in the game. After all, he went from talking mad shit about Shepard to being dead silent. So disappointing. That being said killing a Reaper on foot was pretty cool. Even if you could just cheese it by aiming the Cain just right and nuking the boss in one hit. If you ask me, a problem with ME3 is actually a failure to follow up on ME2. But to segway, personally I wish that the opening scene _was_ the trial they promised in the promo material, which would serve the same purpose as the intro conversation with Miranda and Jacob. A way to cement the big choices you made in the previous game (IE saving Kaidan or Ashley, Saving the council or sacrificing them, Udina or Anderson, saving the collector base/destroying it, destroying thr Bahak system etc etc) with the Virmire survivor being called in as a character witness. And _then_ the Reapers crash the Trial, leading to Shepard's immediate acquittal and reinstatement. Because - Oh God, the massive threat we were denying is actually here killing us all. By hey. This is a decade of hindsight talking.

Man I always wished they continued these personal quests into ME3, this one is even hinted to continue in the second game but they never gave closure between Shepard and Toombs (which is important to the Sole Survivor background) would have been interesting to encounter Toombs and try to talk him down and recruit his team as war assets.

Because Bioware was is such an incredible rush to finish that game that they threw away like two Acts worth of story, some to sell as DLC and some to be forgotten.

@@luisemoralesfalcon4716 It is not the rush, but the sheer size of the story in ME3. The playthrough time of ME3 is the same as ME2, and double of ME1. If they incorporate these as well, ME3 would be massive, and a lot more work for them for the same price, so no profit. They would’ve needed another full game to include all these storylines.

@@juzoli this is what Bioware promised the player base. They could have been honest and delayed ME3 as they could have managed to incorporate a lot in neat ways that didn't felt huge. Tombs should have been at the Citadel Coup and be there as we are rescuing the Council and in his fury after watching how we kill Udina he, and his mercs, start shooting at Shepard forcing us to either kill them or talk them down, the VS and the Council would have helped automatically.

@@luisemoralesfalcon4716 Well EA was shoving ME3 out the door as quickly as they could to make money. If you know this, you can actually see the seems in the story when EA started to bitch and even the graphics where the rush happened. As a result, I call these seams the EA effect.

Colonist/sole survivor imo is the most interesting for paragon or renegade. Paragon being you went through hell your early life and still turned out good. While renegade people could easily understand why your such a ass, you lived through hell

I personally think renegade works better with earthborn/ruthless and paragon as spacer/war hero as putting shephard through double tragedies before we even start the game seems excessive to me, I do think my first ever playthrough might’ve been colonist/sole survivor though

@lucaswest5078 I like to think my "paragade", Shepard sees the worse the galaxy has to offer, and it's why they fight so hard to save everyone. They were the colonist that suffered, they were the soldiers that failed.

Up until now, I didn't know this side quest with corporal toombs even existed. Cerberus sure did many nasty stuff in the background in ME1 before coming to the mainstream of galactic affairs in ME2 and 3.

On my 4th playthrough, I didn’t rely on the journal, but visited every single system and planet individually looking for missions. I found like 3 or 4 missions which I was never asked to do by Hackett or anyone, and was only visible when I scanned the planet. Some of them are pretty good, like one with the Rachni nest.

Also sometimes there are 2-3 different missions, and random emails in ME2, and if our memory is not perfect, it is hard to connect the dots, and realize they are the same persons and common storyline.

Reminds me again of how the opening of ME2 was a harbinger for the ending we got to ME3. Having you join Cerberus without even a squawk, even if you had done a complete play-through and seen ALL the horrible things they'd been up during ME1. Cerberus in ME2 always struck me as another Kai Leng; "Check out my OC, aren't they cool, aren't they really, really cool?" The game made up for it, of course, with the other characters. But, given that Renegade Shep can often be such an asshole to people, why oh why weren't you ever allowed to be even slightly sassy to TIM?

This is true. Having played Legendary Edition recently, I realized that the second and third games were an argument of style over substance in many ways. The first game was about learning a new world and exploring it; the second and third games were about action and soap-opera-like drama, rather than atmosphere, thought and speculative fiction. I guess I'm somewhat biased since I played a refined version of the first game for my first experience with the series, but I feel like Bioware really took the series in a different direction since the second game (probably thanks to EA acquiring it). I feel like stripping the second and third games of customization and room to explore really downgraded the series over time; the third game was effectively a rushed mess and the ending was almost completely thematically disconnected from the first two games. Perhaps if Bioware had kept its autonomy, things would have turned out differently for the series.

And it is quests like this that I understood why Ashley didn't joined Shepard (but I extended the offer just in case) on Horizon: 1) she was being observed by: the Council, the Alliance and Cerberus and as we know those three love to use the little guy quickly; 2) the organization is a piece of filth who did things like this as a normal Tuesday; 3) Bioware just needed a way in ME3 to introduce the Cerberus and Shepard connections to new players and they chose the Virmire survivor, which isn't a bad thing on itself but they did it wrongly. A/K job was to protect the Council during the Coup, so they did well to put their personal relation aside, but the Normandy crew should have stepped in with their words to convince the VS that they need to calm down and that it is ok to question him at that moment but Bioware forgot. Edit: this is another quest that should have had it's consequences shown in ME3.

I agree. While Shepard didnt explain himself well in me2, and couldve solved alot by properly explaining to her what was happening vs "I was gone a long time ash". It would be like a former comrade coming back from the dead working for I SIS. Of course youd be like uhhhh nah I dont trust this. I'm more shocked they didnt make Shepard more resistant against Cerberus in me2. He basically just goes along with everything barely questioning anything

Akuze is my go to story it makes Shepard more relatable with a tragic mission that he/she is famed for The Blitz is good to for making them larger than life but this one makes them more average for when you start off I also prefer the Earthborn background cause it adds to depth to their character. What about you?

In Mass Effect 2, a galactic news talks about the Shepherd Scholarship Act. Kids in inner cities get to have college money and a career in the alliance, better then the alternative where they join gangs and it makes my heart melt when I hear it

I chose colonist/sole survivor. Played Played character as being unable to form normal relationships because of all the loss they suffered. RP-Wise, I decided that meant only being friendly with characters I'd only known since one game previous. Also Garry's was the romance option, since him losing his whole team paralleled akuze and I felt they could understand each other

The Sole Survivor origin was always my personal favorite, felt like it was more flushed out than the rest. I also think that maybe Akuze could have played a more important story mission from the amount they put into it, but decided not to towards the end.

Definitely the most interesting background. I always take spacer and war hero for the paragon bonus, but this one is the best from a story standpoint.

I was so confused on what was going on when I first did this quest. All I remember is Toombs shooting himself and that was that, this was my first playthrough of the Trilogy so I didn’t think to make the connection to Cerberus. This video really cleared a lot up for me, thank you!

Didn't pick up on everything my first playthrough, some years ago started up full ME1-3 playthough once I had my own copies. As a soul survivor I made it my mission through 2 to fuck the Illusive Man and Cerberus over with a little bit more... enthusiasm. Nothing like investing a little into role-play.

Could you consider making a video about everything that happened on Earth between the Prologue and Priority: Earth missions of Mass Effect 3 (or even all the offscreen parts of the Reaper War) based on dialogue we can hear across the game? Eg: the dialogue you can hear from EDI or Allers on the Normandy.

I'd love it if you did videos (or even just one video) for the other backgrounds/psychological profiles as well! I'd be curious to see the different reactions and unique dialogue for each of the three psychological profiles (Sole Survivor, War Hero, Ruthless) and the three backgrounds (Spacer, Colonist, Earthborn). On a side note, kinda disappointed there's no unique dialogue option in regards to Shepard fighting a Thresher Maw on foot in ME2. Like, damn, Shepard just acts as though that wasn't totally PTSD-inducing and probably terrifying and difficult for him/her. I mean even for non-Survivor Sheps that's probably pretty terrifying lol.

Thanks for all of the work you put into these videos Big Dan! This is the best psyc profile story and the longest running one iirc. Played all of the combos of pre-service history and psyc profile and Colonist/Sole survivor is the most engaging plus the bonus renegade and paragon points to start with don't hurt either.

I did Sole Survivor because of how it fits. Maybe it's me but I saw the legend of Shepard beginning behind the sole survivor. Alone battling other worldly creatures. The legend "ending" as the sole survivor....sort of... Alone facing an even bigger other worldly threat. Kind of comes full circle

Wanted to say it probably isn’t a bug for the audio about your reputation he’s probably just meaning your past in general as he’s basically saying you weren’t there. In the sole survivor path you too know each other meaning he was in your unit. The other response to your war hero character makes it sound like you have never met

The worst background is colonist/sole survivor. I love picking them for my female renegade Shepard. It justifies her bitchy ness LOL. Also if you bring Wrex when talking to toombs and the doctor try to lie he will say something along the lines "Shepard was there on Akuze"

It was always anti-alien, and not pro-human. They only fed their own hunger for power. And then IM got indoctrinated, and worked almost exclusively to try to block humanity so they lose. If he is successful, then humanity falls, other races fall, and only Cerberus wins.

"you got away with a few scars and a scary reputation" the war hero practically proved unstoppable and the slavers weren't able to win against the colony he/she helped out, sole survivor shook off a thresher maw and ruthless made Shepahrd into a getthings done despite the cost. all 3 sevice histories leave scars and all 3 can make for a scary Shepard 10:53 did Toombs say Akuze? all I heard was him say he got a couple of scratches which can be easily from anywhere and any planetside mission

You can convince Toombs to let the scientist live so that he can be put on trial. The scientist will agree to give a public statement exposing the truth about Akuze in exchange for his life. Cerberus tries to distance themselves and claim that that science team went rogue and the incident had nothing to do with them. At least, that's what Miranda claims--ever the Cerberus PR girl.

It still bothers me that if you're not more pissed off at the beginning of ME2 at Cerberus if you had the sole surviver background. Literally your background is based on something Cerberus did to you and your unit and it barely gets brought up when you join them in ME2. Bioware dropped the ball when it came to the psychological backgrounds after ME1

With a Sole Survivor back ground I always imagine would still HATE Thresher Maws, dreading when they appear and enjoying killing them. And my sole survivor is an Engineer so I also imagine she survived by repairing a defense system and shooting the worms with heavy firepower like you are told is the best way to do it but as the years go with people retelling the story of her genius gets it more and more fantastic. By Mass Effect 3 the story goes she built a making a mass accelerator with some PVC pipe, a roll of duct tape, a bag of potatoes for ammo, and the eezo from a Cision Pro toothbrush.

It's hard to believe Cerberus testing on humans if they are all about human agenda, I think that this was a result of early writing without taking into consideration ME2. Imagine what a game ME3 would be if you could choose to stay with the Cerberus or the Alliance.

It heals your scars. Shepard still has cybernetics inside him so he wouldn't survive.
