Its a shame you couldn't meet Zabaleta if you picked the Colonist origin. I feel like Colonist Shepard would have some interesting interaction with him.

In mass effect 3 when you return to the Normandy and talk to Garrus and ask him about his family he asks about yours and Shepard mentions his mother

Im slightly embarrassed that neither of my Shepard's had the mother storyline, but this is cool to see 😅

Renegade Shep has no chill about PTSD

The quest in ME1 was ok and hearing Shepard's mom was nice but they kind of dropped the ball in the sequels imo, it's like Bioware remembered that there's a Shepard mom somewhere and they had to throw something to make her relevant, especially the call in the Citadel DLC that felt like a last minute thought and ends up abruptly without even an option to send her something like "Love you mom, be safe out there" And as someone that made the colonist background as my main, I headcanon that the Zabaleta guy is the one that found young Shepard in the rubbles of Mindoir.

Shepard meets his/her Mother. "We Bang ok ? ! " Mother: " Excuse me, what? >.> ' Shepard: " sorry, force of habit. "

I always play as a Spacer (boring, I know), so I am already familiar with this, but wanted to watch for channel support. What saddens me about the relationship Shepard has with their mom, is that the mother always seems so distant and busy. We see how Commander Shepard has time to walk around the ship having conversations with his/her crew. Hannah rarely hears from Shep, but when she does, she can't spare five minutes to speak to her only child? Her attitude is always abrupt. Then, in the Citadel DLC, when she finally wants to talk to him/her about things, Shep is abrupt. It reminds me very much of the Harry Chapin song Cat's in the Cradle. I feel they could have made the relationship a little less... antagonistic and uncaring? Unless that's what they were going for, then well done. It would certainly explain why a Renegade Shep is the way (s)he is. Also, as others have mentioned, would it have been so hard to put a line in about their father?

"Shepherd never responds to e-mails...." *Looks to my email box with 100+ emails* Sounds legit!

I wish that Zabaleta could have had some small role later on. Maybe if he gets help he finds a calling better suited to his nature and becomes a war asset or something.

Always loved the Spacer background because my family history of military service felt so real and relatable. Though the hardest part for me to playthrough was the interactions with Zabaleta. Experienced that too many times to count.

Man the ME1 mission is crazy to me as someone who usually picks the Colonist background. Ive never even SEEN Mindoir but I hear the name and pop up because, in a way, I’m from there. And it’s crazy to think that while Batarians were killing my Shepard’s parents, another Shepard’s parents were fighting said Batarians

Dan, I appreciate your excellent work. Fyi in case you were not aware, there is a comment on the Citadel in Mass Effect 2 on the news feed about Shepard's mother too. This might be of interest to those who haven't listened to all of the news items at the kiosks. Spacer is actually my favorite background and what I almost always choose, as I am just not as fond of the other two but havel played through all three.

In ME3 at the embassy's help desk ..an old lady was asking the Asari agent the whereabouts of her military son .this I thought was his long lost mother...very sad.

I did like doing the Spacer and Sole Survivor background. They are a great combo.

Always wondered about Sheps dad.

I really like the connection to Mindoir because it makes the prospect of a 'combined background' Shepard quite straightforward/plausible, at least for the Colonist/Spacer Shepard. Like we can easily imagine a scenario where Shepard is growing up on Mindoir but their mother Hannah is still in the Alliance Navy, and they are then taken in by their mother after the rest of their family are killed in the raid.

Kinda sucks that we never get to meet her in person. Could’ve introduced her to Shepard’s LI or told her stories about his/her adventures.

It's easy to see it as odd that Shepard's Mom is promoted but Shepard never is, but when you think about it - it makes sense. Shepard is effective as a battlefield commander - in a civilization in a prolonged state of war, you generally don't promote your best battlefield commanders to desk jobs. Shepard kicks ass flying the Normandy, she'd likely kick a lot less ass flying a desk. They could have still promoted her to Captain and kept her in the field (Captain Anderson would have stayed in command of the Normandy had it not been for Shepard) - but maybe the timing was odd - end of ME1 might have been too soon, ME2 she was working for Cerburus, and ME3, well.....let's not go there. Should Shepard's story continue in ME4, it wouldn't be shocking to hear that it is now Captain Shepard, whether alive or posthumously promoted. Certainly, after the ME3 end...a promotion is warranted (maybe more than one - Rear Admiral Shepard?).

This quest, and the Colonist one, are the reason why I kill all Batarians I can. I am glad they got wiped out by the Reapers.

It's funny, I never found that guy on the Citadel in ME1, but I did get the email from Mama Shepard in 2.

I cannot make a Shepherd that's not a spacer (because mom) and Ruthless ( goes too well with all the batarian interactions through one two and three and makes the most sense for spectres [by any means necessary unit] )

I finished all three games for the first time as a colonist lone survivor and it was pretty good though I did get couple plot holes like Garrus talking like he was in a first game with me even though I rejected him and Thane's funeral having Counselor there even though he died because I did not get a chance to meet Thane before he died.

I somehow never encountered anything to do with shepards mom. In me 1 and I think 2? I only ever interacted with her on the citadel dlc and I think before the final few battles.

I liked how Shepard's parents were also alliance badasses

Shame that you can't call her on Earth right before final mission when you can talk to all your crew members. There is one empty slot as I recall so it would be cool.

I think its a missed opportunity for the entire Mass Effect Trilogy to give Shepard some real biological family. Not to say Mass Effect is one of its kind and legendary already, but I think having an own family in the back just enriches Shepards background and the lore so much more than there already is. Having a mother in the spacer background already was so great. But like I said I think they could've expanded way more on it.

I know this isnt cyberpunk but Dan do you know anything about the ghost house/haunted house that the maelstrom (i Think they’re maelstrom) people mention here and there? A house that doesn’t match its blueprints?

I'm sad I missed some of this stuff but this was my first time playing a Spacer (I'm usually earthborn)

shepard and garrus also talk about shepards mother in mass effect 3, when garrus enquires after their family after telling them that he's not heard from his dad and sister

I love how with all the substitute slang words for normal stuff like the extranet, vids, and medigel but they still just call alcohol booze. Honestly momma shep should've been in the game. She's so sweet and it's not like they couldn't just make a algorithm for her looks based off what the player looks like. I mean if fallout did it in 2008 I don't see why Bioware can't.

It's a small detail I know but I kinda wish they had your mother say "I should go" just once, it'd be a nice little detail about where Spacer Shepard learned the phrase and why they keep using it so much so that it's something of a meme

Well damn, I had no idea there was a story about Shephard's mum that is pretty cool, shame it's only under 1 condition though.

Would have been cool if the story you picked mattered a bit more. In ME1 we got the name of mom’s ship, in ME3 Cerberus could send Kai leng after her. That’ll make his death more satisfying cause he attacked Shepard the most personal way possible. 😡don’t touch mom

WTF my first trilogy playthrough Shephard's first name was also Hannah wtf. I didn't know Shephard's mom was called Hannah lmfao (I played earth background). My mind is blown lol

The mother crap is exactly why I would never choose the spacer background. You never get to see her anyways and she's not part of the storyline in any shape or form so adding her to the game feels like a waste anyway.
