#Maramures is #Romania's most traditional, most rural region. It borders Ukraine to the north, and traditional folk culture is still very present here. In addition, scattered throughout #Maramures, there are beautiful old wooden churches that are designated UNESCO world-heritage sites. I decided to head out on a solo journey to find some them. Let's check it out.
Thanks for watching! Cheers, Nick :)

The culture in this region is so enticing to me and so are the painted churches. I love that you are adventuring and sharing this great content. We will either be here in May or in 2026, depending on work schedule. Cheers!

You have to call someone to come and open the church. Usually a neighbour woman. With 5 Ron entrance fee and few tourists, they cannot afford to pay someone to stay there full time. The phone number is usually at the entrance gate. Thank you for making this video about my home county.

This part of the country it is known for wood industry and woodcraftmanship. Usually the houses have big wooden gates and they carve their family story or describe what craft the family is into( blacksmith, builder etc) on the door or folk motifs ( sun, rooster, tree of life etc). see gate at 4:22 Also the Merry Cemetery is in the area. Not sure if you know about it?

Here's a question I have wondered for a while. Why do so many tree trunks in Romania have white on the bottom? I'm curious what locals would say. Happy Travels
@johnr3599
@johnr3599 Год назад
In spring, the trunks of the fruit trees are painted with white lime, for protection. White lime destroys the eggs of insects and parasites that are in the bark of fruit trees. In addition, liming fruit trees also has an aesthetic role.
@andreeas.2362
@andreeas.2362 Год назад
Beside the reason the other said, is because close to spring we have fluctuation of temperature. White will reflect the sunshine long enough for the weather to stabilize and the tree will not start to flower to early or the juice of the tree run through the trunk. This happens if somehow there is a spell of warm during the winter (it happens sometime a week above 0C) and the tree will start. After that if a great freeze come (like -20 or more, the tree will die. Usually the spring comes for sure after Easter (no matter when the easter is, is calculated after the moon phases). Until Easter, it can always freeze and snow.

An American in Barsana...The reason why there is only one wooden church preserved is because - check the history .The Orthodox Christians were only permitted to build wooden churches so these would not last during the history...History can reveal many cruel moments if studied . It is a matter of education and standard of living to put all these away in Europe .

But it makes no sense, Bucovina was also under Austrian rule for hundreds of years and you can find orthodox churches made of bricks everywhere :), these churches are just a tradition in the region and most of the are catholic and Greek-catholic ( mostly the oldest ones ), you can find wooden churches all over the carpathians mountains in Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary too although each region having their own design, this is just a tradition all over the carpathians, it has little to do with what you said.

@@antonsasaran1377 well there are also orthodox monasteries built in bricks in Transylvania form the 1700 in southern Transylvania. The truth is that most Romanians in Transylvania were catholic or Greek-catholic before communism, orthodoxy was around 15% in 1930 and it grew at 20% in the 40s. Now it’s predominantly orthodox cause of forced conversione made by the communism regime where they closed all religious spaces beside e the orthodox ones and reformed many churches into orthodoxy from Catholicism or Protestantism.

@@dacian_1346 I am very glad to any comments regarding Transilvania Real History . The facts I know is that after the Hungarian conquering it around the year of 850-900 BC , the Administration of the Province had been adjusted to new rules implemented by the new Rulers based on western style , more modern . The entire Region dominated by the Hungarians - up to the region of the Iron Gate ( Danube ) was undergoing a significant economic advancing .We cannot talk about a Romanian population at that time - as forming a majority - but about people speaking a romance language These category was considered as " second class " and only those very well educated had a word to say ! The truth is that still nowadays , the history of Transilvania is very tight connected to the Hungarian heritage . This is the reason after the WWI - 1918 - the political changing to the Romanian system was so brutal - see Babes Bolyai University in Cluj ! Errors have been committed on both sides . I still believe that Romania and Hungary can dominate the Eastern Europe political and economical situation but ambition , personal revenge , hate and much more are way to strong to eliminate the effects of Trianon !
