What do you do when it's cold and you along with all of your clothes and insulation are soaking wet? Can you survive? Can you stay warm? Hypothermia? I test this scenario solo on the beautiful Chipola River in Florida.

A survival scenario like being cold and wet can be serious with threats like hypothermia and death being real possibilities. Being solo on a kayak camping adventure poses it's own problems that can make an amazing adventure a disaster.

Finally back in your kayak! Really enjoyed everything about this video Trip. Very nice river to kayak on, this "hypothermia"-experiment was really intresting to watch. Its sometimes on my mind when I am out in cold weather, its very important to have a plan when everything else fails. I think pack smart (waterproof bags), have at least one set of underclothing in merinowool (warms even if soaked), remove wet clothes as fast as possible (even in cold weather) and get a fire going (the work will warm you up aswell as the fire). Awesome video Trip, thanks for the sacrifice LOL. Thumbs up from Sweden!

Hey I actually have a question. What are some things that are needed for a trip like this. I have the basics like food, pots, hammock, etc but what else would you recommend to bring?
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 6 лет назад
On what to bring, I'd start here on my Gear List video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f6AM_tyHqng.html Other than that its pretty much like normal camping just keep everything dry. Have fun!!!

Trip Smith, at 5 hours away, this looks totally worthwhile. If you ever venture to the east coast of Florida, check out the spoil islands in either Canaveral national seashore or the ones near Sebastian Inlet, good fishing and beautiful scenery and if you plan it right you get an awesome, ground shaking view of the rocket launches from Canaveral.

Hahah - nice video. Thanks for sharing man. Many things you still have to learn but you will get there. Normally build a wind protection and lay out that space blanket in L shape facing the fire. Get some leaves under it and you are good to go all night. Hang all your wet things closer and don't let the fire die. A bottle of hot water in your bed makes miracles. Hope you did not catch cold .

Good vid, man. Looks like a fun river. Nice clear water! Crazy that the springs in FL are warmer than the river. Up here in Northern Michigan the springs are always icy cold. I guess ours come from deeper. That makes sense in a geological standpoint between FL and MI, I guess. Cheers!

You can actually take longer sticks/logs and place them inbetween two trees closely together and use that extra leverage to snap your wood into burnable pieces. This way you don't gotta swing the branches around, but simply snap them. It works surprisingly well... Neat trick to cut yet another corner when collecting wood.

@TripSmith
@TripSmith 6 лет назад
Thanks my man! I'm enjoying narrating. I have several leashes but it can be dangerous using them in moving water. If you drop you paddle or flip it could get caught on a snag and the current could trap you. It's kind of a big no-no from my understanding.

You timed this paddle perfectly, Trip! It's the driest it's been all year, so the water is incredibly clear, and the leaves are all changing colors for winter. Shame it's so chilly, but I think this is definitely the prettiest it'll be all year.

One thing you could try is similar to this. Pack all your gear into your boat, then flip the boat and perform a wet exit in some deep water. After that flip your boat upright and pump the water out with a bilge pump, then re-enter all without taking it ashore. After that, paddle a few more miles and then go ashore and camp overnight. The object of this would be test your re-entry skills and your gear's ability to either stay dry or perform adequately when wet.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 6 лет назад
That sounds pretty good to me! I like it! Adding that one to the list. Very cool! Thanks!

Here is a good video on the proper way of performing a wet exit ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-blJFzirv3-E.html Here are some good re-entry techniques ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4bupgSO1XBE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-draZdyX4l-g.html I would recommend practicing these in a pool, lake, or pond close to shore first. Also, here is some gear to consider for this... NRS HydroSkin Jacket. This great because works wet or dry. It may even work better when wet. www.nrs.com/product/15037.02/nrs-mens-hydroskin-15-jacket In fact, any of the NRS HydroSkin stuff is outstanding for paddling... www.nrs.com/category/2574/men/hydroskin Paddle Float to aid with re-entry www.harmonygear.com/products/9733/Harmony-Blade-Aid-Paddle-Float.html Float bags help to fill any empty space in the boat which means less water for you to pump... www.harmonygear.com/products/9722/Harmony-Long-Float-Bag-Set-Vinyl.html I notice that you weren't really using water shoes so you ended up with wet shoes in the morning. I use a pair of Astral river shoes combined with some NRS HydroSkin socks and it is an amazing solution for warm and cool weather alike. www.astraldesigns.com/shop/footwear/unisex/hiyak www.nrs.com/product/30011.02/nrs-hydroskin-05-wetsocks Hope all this helps!

Really good video !!! JWT say , I learned the hard way a few yrs ago here in Mi. that the FASTER your base layer can dry in cold conditions is Paramount !!! Was about 6 miles in from my trk and was going to be Mid to hi 30's this night and a sudden shower came up and caught me with pack cover not on and I got drenched . Had ONE spare of sleeping clothes , was getting foggy out and temp dropping as I got to camp and new if I couldn't get my clothes I was wearing dried after I started a fire I was in trouble . Yep I was . Had been raining almost straight the 3 days before , my fleece was wet and I was shaking and could NOT get a fire started while wearing my spare (shit) sleeping base layer, which had also got wet from fog AND sweat in my haste . In final , I packed up and with fog it took me almost 3hrs to get out and back to my trk heater and more DRY clothes . Since, I have been on a never ending quest for the QUICKEST drying base layer , Name a Brand and I have probably tried it . For me , for the $$$ , the Carhartt base layers are impossible to beat , once again for the $$ Terramar makes some of the best for the $$ also . Always have at least ONE full set of 100% wool now unless it is SUMMER and not getting below 50 !!! As before , really good video . Keep em coming ................. Gubs

Thanks!!!! Yep, that's why I tried to dry out my base layer after I got my main insulation dry (fleece) Interesting story and I'll have to check out Carhartt's stuff, thanks for the suggestion!

Trip, like the few vids i have seen. You look like you're having a blast. Can't wait to get back to yakin'. A quick idea on your drying process...nature makes a great oven....rocks. Build your fire under any over hanging rocks and lay gear on top. Or gather smaller rocks, heat them and you can lay your gear over the top reducing the drying time. Smaller rocks can be put inside shoes to help dry them out. Inside a drybag to use as a personal heater at night or in the yak. Adjusting temp of the rocks is as easy as dunking or pouring water on them. Coach

THanks Ron! I'm sure having a good time my man. If I would have had a large rock face I would have been near it for sure. Unfortunately there weren't many large rocks around but I did take a few minutes and look for some for the exact reasons you mentioned. I guess I could have used some small ones though huh..... Thanks for the info Coach!

Chop busting time. You are one crazy mutha! First of all that's what your dry bags are for, to keep things dry. Not to take them out and soak them in the water unless you were doing a washing but I knew that wasn't so because you weren't using any soap. Your first thing to do after taking a accidental dunk is to build a fire first get out of your wet clothes and put dry ones on "as long as you didn't do what you did with your other stuff" lol and get heated up before hypothermia sets in.Noticed it couldn't of been that cold because there was a bunch of bugs flying around the camera,lol. Loved your wood processing and you made a awesome point to the people with their fancy cutting tools which is so true! As I process my wood the same way you did as long as it is weak enough. The only worse case scenario would be yours!!! Remember just busting your chops Trip. I know what your trying to do with the video. Always appreciated thx! I left ya a "pm" on your fb page a month ago and ya never got back. Awesome to see the population growing congrats! Stay warm buddy and catch ya on the flip side!

Yea I was testing a complete failure (lots of people out there don't have dry bags for all their gear and even if they do they may not seal them correctly. Plus it was a good fun test lol It wasn't cold that day but once the sun went down, it got chilly pretty quickly. I have trouble keeping up with all the messages I get and FB is the worst lol It's pretty difficult for me to navigate all the notifications I get there.... So I neglect it a bit for that reason which doesn't make it any easier.... Thanks for the great comment!

Your attitude is contagious, i loved this video. subscribed and looking forward to more. biengs you had some gear stolen, this would make a good video, how to survive after missing a bag with your food or crucial gear, hand line a fish or two, maybe snare something, Forage some plants? all good, and that was some beautiful scenery, close to what we have here in Ohio in the fall! thanks for this vid, peace and be safe.

Trip, ya' also asked for some suggestions for future vids....well...these will be extremely challenging. Here ya' go. 1. You hit a rock in some rapids, your yak is cracked and taking on water. What do ya' do to continue without becoming a submarine? 2. Going thru brush or rapids your paddle breaks and you lose half or even the whole thing! 3. Exit. Spearfish. Re-enter with your catch. Anchor. Clean and cook on the yak. 4. How comfortable can you get anchoring and spending the night on the yak? These are just a few of the things that come to mind. Good luck. Coach

Great video Trip. Can't stress enough the point you made of processing fire wood. Work smarter not harder. Carrying an axe, saw and knife is heavy and tiring for nothing. A good rigid knife will cut your meat, rope or avocados, and in a pinch it's all the wood chopping power you need. If you even need it.. nice job.
