Today we will discuss one of the most over look movement in the Wing Chun form: the opening movement of the X arm. We will also look at the application and how to practice it solo with the proper energy
These days you may not be able to find a partner to train with, so there are a few drills in there to help you train it. Enjoy!

In my utmost humble opinion. Truly appreciate your non conformist approach to Wing Chun/ Martial arts in general, as many people will never be able to step out of their comfort zone, and only see according to their own preconceived biases that is even further exacerbated due to faulty training methods or lack of proper comprehension of what fighting and violence actually entails. The approach “ If he( the attacker) does this, i will just do that” is often the norm in TMA, and my humble reply to such rhetoric is: ” No, you’ll might” And there’s a big difference, and stating otherwise is beyond ignorant, and any person that has real sparring experiences will retort the same and might add as well: ” There are no guarantees, only opportunities, missed or taken” ie “ Fighting is relativity in motion, never expect only respond as it one’s opponent within context that dictates tactics” “ A fight is a fight, and there is no such thing as an easy fight, that is why it is called fighting” Since now in our day and age, saying that you teach or practice Wing Chun has sadly become synonymous with the phrase” I do not know how to fight” Due to the faulty exponents of the arts that has become the spoke persons and so called authority on “ Real/ Authentic wing Chun” just look up their “Authentic wing Chun vs any art that spars” And one will be quick to see why people in general condemns Chinese martial arts as something to be shunned if you want to really learn how to defend yourself, which is a shame... The Wing Chun system not only has many different lineages, which focuses on different aspects, but if one delves deeper one will discover the systems overall attributes are likened to a stand up, bare knuckle kickboxing system not that different from Lethwei, applications- wise. This can be observed when utilizing correct training methods which reveals( Like mr Chan stated) “ Hidden meanings” within the techniques themselves. Most of its applicable techniques are actually wrestling/ clinch based, even have take downs akin to osoto otoshi, osoto gari, and ogoshi(major hip throws/ leg sweeps in judo), Double/ singles/ duck unders, pummels, “ Club/Dig” under/overhooks, collar ties, arms drags, ” Russian two on one” clinch elbows/ knees and headbutts, to basic submissions and holds like kimura key/ hammer locks, to rear naked chokes, to frames/ posts/ sprawls as basic takedown defenses, as well as fundamental offense/ defense: slips/ pulls/ counters/ parries/ blocks/ frames, jab/ cross/ hooks/ uppercuts etc. So by supplementing with a proper strength and conditioning program and learning BJJ fundamentals in concordance with live sparring, as to enable oneself to comprehend how to keep the fight where on needs it to take place, then many of the Chinese Fist systems have substantial redeeming qualities in them. And I humbly believe Mr Chan would agree with my statement in that regard. Truly appreciate the sublime content that you provide Mr Chan, you are truly a breath of fresh air, and it is sorely needed. An honor to be able to observe and learn from such an peer as yourself. Wish the best of blessings to you and yours as well as your students. Sincere regards. Fellow martial artist. Tom Framnes. We are scarily similar in our WC, even down to our wording when we explain things, even though we come from different linages. We both started WC around the same time. I think you were 1986. I was 1987.

Love this Adam, in my kempo we use the four vectors with the X block, (reception). We never tried to capture a blow instead we use what ever vector the blow is in to decide the response. In this way the attacker chooses their own path.

Appreciate the videos. Good breakdown of underlying concepts. I have the fortune of working with a very good teacher, who previously showed me there is also a very direct advanced application of that position with both hands for fighting. Beyond most students, but not for those able to apply the underlying concepts of body mechanics with connectivity.

Fascinating explanation. In Jow Gar we have the Small Tiger block with starts the same way but at the apex of the movement the wrist is rotated outwards. I saw exactly that when you pulled Chris up and then down because the contact doesn't push back but rather glances against his arm and partially redirects his force upward before you change direction and bring it down opening his gate.

@adamchan Ahhhh, interesting application ☺ Somehow know it from some other movements within the drills we learn at my school, it is quite well hidden yeah. We mainly see the X as a centre and sideline check like you say and also a crossblock to nullify a kick or punch and then turn into a lop or whatever else. Not really thought about it singularly much. I guess it's also a tighter version of the lower section to higher section block later in the form then. Which is single handed ...

Great point about micro-movements. Consider this in terms of converting or sending energy. Movement [if energy is understood in terms of lines of force] results naturally [and only as small as necessary] from mindful response. This is why people don't understand Wing Chun because the energy is not apparent. Practical Wing Chun is via Duncan Leung, a private closed-door student of Ip Man. I was taught by a private student of Duncan. Most of their demonstrations are more outwardly focused, but a handful of his longtime students are very advanced. The crossing hands also represents an idea of energy and drawing from both "sides". There is rotation and return of line. This is crucial for disarms and effectiveness in Wing Chun techniques. We should always be "beside" the line and then return energy by "crossing" the line and sending it back to their center [or in later stages pulling the opposite direction with rotational, crossing energy]. This is a common misconception. Many think squaring violates Wing Chun principles [or movements in the Bart Cham Dao]. This is because people do not understand the principles. A triangle has three sides, but people only think of the "apex" of force. One must also protect the remaining two sides [shoulders, hips] by spreading force [example: pulling Wu Sao] against rounded attacks. In truth, Wing Chun has many kinds of strikes [even rounded ones] hidden also in the forms in similar manner. We must understand the Siu Nim Tao trains state [via structure, which is only the middleman]. It is a "mirrored" form to train both sides at once. It is not a "kata". Focus, not force. Energy, not movement.

the centre line is always a good reference point. the similarities between Wing chun and southern Preying mantis are extensive . I’m sure much was adapted from Wing chun as southern Preying Mantis was developed as a quick fighting Art in response to the Manchus at a later date . thankyou Sifu Adam I really appreciate your knowledge as it has increased mine.🇦🇺Scott

In leung ting lineage, it's a sideling tan sao... (forward and not upward) and the rotation from the gan sao to the sideling tan is a kwan sao.

Ip Man, an upper-class person, taught WC in HK to working class students probably very reluctantly because he was in necessity after being forced to live Canton. It seems well established that he only taught to 5 students and probably not everything he knew and dropping concepts here and there from time to time. He let many questions and concepts unanswered. It's absurd to give too many explanations nowadays because they are all only speculations.

@9usuck0
@9usuck0 3 года назад
I would honestly suggest if you have a good shaolin teacher to stay there. lol Teachers like Adam are rare in Wing Chun, but then I do not know how good shaolin teachers are either. lol But which ever you decide, remember that self defense takes a lot of work regardless of which style. Eastern arts depending on the area will always be more work to be effective, because you have to learn body mechanics and movements before you can condition them the effective use.

@@gerardocovarrubias1127, I am going to let you in on a secret. It is all the same. Only the history and culture really changes. There is only so many ways of moving our bodies. So it is good for learning all their cultures but once you learn an art implementing other arts is pretty easy. But I imagine your purpose is to learn their cultures so that is a good plan. Starting with Shaolin is probably the best one to start with, because it is the most broad. I think you are in for a lifetime of adventure.

@@gerardocovarrubias1127 if you learn too many things it gonna get all jumbled up...pick one or two at most and concentrate. From my sihing who trained 10 yrs of shaolin, shaolin is useful for health not for combat. Many styles, their principles conflict with each other just in wing chun the diff lineages will conflict. Where do you live? I suggest finding a WSL or CST lineage school those are my preferences.
