I am a Norwegian with a lot of winter tenting experience. I would not remove the snow before putting the tent up. I would just Compress it. The snow is not as cold as the frozen ground, and it is much cleaner. And if there is enough snow, you can dit a cold ditch. You can allso use snow as a insulator from the outside.

13:25 I'm still in the Australian Army. At night, in Australia, we do gun picquet. I did a winter exercise in Lapland country with some Scandafinwegians where the troops do fire stove picquet. The enemy might try to shoot you, but without a stove in a six-man tent near the Artic Circle, you'll definitely die. We Aussies carry a lot of combat supplies - water, rations and ammo. Scandafinwegians carry of lot of dried wood and kindling, their skis and recurve bows with quivers of some of the best arrows I've ever seen - I watched Elk/Reindeer come down at 150 yards for rations. If you've ever tried to fire a one metre+ arrow from a recurve, you'll understand it. Fun facts.

Hey Joe, I have been watching your videos for many years from having babies,fighting illnesses to losing dogs. I for one have been disabled for many years and one of my favorite things from a boy was packing a pack and heading out into the woods. Of course that all ended. So watching you to go out and do your thing is the next best thing. I've noticed over the years of reading comments that I am not alone many of your subscribers also feel the same way. Recently I was burdened with cateracs and was completely blind for 9 months. How I missed you buddy. Well surgery done and I can see again I'm back enjoying going on adventures with you. Hi. Joe, first time watching your video, loved it! A couple of years back, I spent the entire winter sleeping outside in a tent within a tent. Heat source was a warmed up sleeping pad. The cold was good for my arthritis. I'm 73 years old.

The slip tube on the chimney is possibly an insulator for where the stovepipe goes through the tent. Cook the fries twice. Once until they're just about done, take them out to cool and pop them back in to crisp up. Keep the already cooked food warm by putting it under the stove.

At the ripe old age of 28, i ruptured 3 discs and had them fused. By 34, i had a total of 6 surgeries to fuse 9 discs...my mobility is minimal at best. It sucks, given i grew up camping out, fishing, hiking, joined the army... So, like you, i live vicariously through the actions of others.

You don't need to dirty pans for gravy and creamed corn, just remove the paper from outside the can, remove the lids and put the cans directly on the stove. They come in their own pan.

That's exactly what I just came to comment. And I'm not sure deep frying in a synthetic tent is the smartest thing to do. Or putting the extra pc of ti tubing on the bottom, that in pretty sure is supposed to double wall the chimney where it goes through the tent to keep Temps down against the fabric. Not sure I don't have the instructions to not read like he did

I may be mistaken but I think that sleeve goes at the top through the pipe hole to act as a heat barrier for the tent . And one of your rings holds the pipe on the stove.

Joe, Double fry for the best results on French Fries. Fry them until they are about how you had them at time stamp 36:15, remove from oil (on a plate or something) and allow to sit for about two minutes. Then return to oil and fry until golden and crispy. This method also works well for buffalo wings. Love the videos and wish I could camp the cool spots like you do. Thanks for the entertainment!

I think that extra piece of metal goes at the point where the stove pipe meets the tent. Its an extra layer of heat protection for the tent where the pipe goes through. I have seen a few of them on other channels like that stove.

33:08 The difference between pushing and pulling can opener is on the opener's blade. If it's triangle like a flag with the edge on the front, it's for pushing; if it's shaped like a hook with the edge on the inside, it's for pulling. You got this Joe!

Same thing happened to me, I moved from Minnesota to Missouri after my mom became sick with cancer. I have to say at the end a decade and a half, I was happy to put the winters of Minnesota behind. While I miss an occasional heavy snow storm, I don’t miss the months long deep freeze. I’ll just get my extreme winter experience vicariously through Joe’s videos. :)

One forgets how labour intensive getting wood is. Been a long time since I’ve been camping. That tent and stove was cool. You seem to know what you are doing and that handy axe repair was very educational. You know what to take and what you are doing. You would have to to survive the cold out there. The burger in the can was interesting. Never heard of that before or canned gravy. A very interesting video. A great video.

Great video! thanks for making it. Some guidance about assembling the stove: Attach guy wires to the metal clips on the spark arrestor, stake the guy wires in the ground. The chimney really needs to be secured. The extra piece of metal is a heat shield that is positioned on the chimney where it exits the roof of the tent. It acts as a double wall with an air gap in between. Keeps the tent from melting/burning. Yea, wrestling to make the chimney is a real joy. BTW, get an electronic CO2 monitor and hang it in the tent - just in case....happy trails! J

Hey Joe. I've been following you for a few years now and absolutely love your videos. I just wanted to say thank you for doing this. This has been a rough year for me. I went into the hospital on February 10 and didn't come home until September 3 from pancreatitis due to too much drinking. I was in a coma and total organ failure at one point.. I was in 3 different hospitals and a nursing home for physical therapy. The hospitals were very boring but the nursing home was the worst. It was so boring. I mean there are so many old people. No you don't understand they're everywhere and I'm only 32 and I was 3q when I first arrived. While stuck in there I caught up on all your videos while I was in there and it made it bearable. I have to re-learn how to walk again but I went from being classified as a functional quadriplegic to now walking with a cane at physicaltherapy. I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for what you do.

Hey Josh....sounds like my story only i am 63.My BP went haywire and i came down with Celluitus.Not fun....was in a bed for 2 months and knees and ankles are still week a month later.Hang in there and not sure what you drank.....I am a beer person myself.I was about a case every other day.Now i sip it and have one now and then.In the nursing home i was in.....this old guy 82 years old wanted to fight because i like a fan blowing on me.He had to have his light on all night.So one morning he yelled...turn that F****g fan off.All the nurses were on my side.Thank God i am home and have to use a cane.....and sometimes a walker.Hang in there Josh.Prayer always helps.See yourself in positive ways and you will overcome anything you set your mind to.

14:50 this a light weight chimney, it's a one piece roll, not multiple pieces of pre-formed pipes, which take up space. Assembling it, for use in cold conditions is taught during recruit training, in various countries, and is competent/not competent, pass/fail. The 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum, New York uses a similar contraption for mountain warfare. The odd pipe that you saw is the protection piece for the tent hole, or the chimney vent space. It's secured by some of the rings.

The Winnerwell Fastfold Ti has been on my list for years now, I should probably get on that. From my research on tent stoves with rollup titanium chimneys, you have to be super careful making it into a chimney the first time. It helps to get someone to help you roll it up the long way, and do it where you have a large, flat, solid area to work in. When you do the first burn in, the heat causes the material to take a 'set'. After that when you set it up it should be far less likely to crinkle up like that, and should be easier to roll the long way into the chimney shape because that's the set it took. Rolling it up to pack away will be easier too, because you only have to deal with 1ft instead of 7ft of length. Hope that helps you or someone else down the road. Thanks for the vid! 🍻

I have to say Joe, that dinner was the BEST MEAL I've ever seen you cook, and it will go on my list to try some time. Tent, stove looked like they did the job well. I do wonder how many 'burns' the stove will last, with the heat it was pumping out; time will tell. Thanks for another adventure !

I always learn new survival ideas from you. Many of these bushcraft camping sites are made by posers and entertainers, but I believe you and a few others to be the real deal. I especially enjoy learning about the best types of wood to burn, how to stay warm tips, etc.

I was homeless for nearly 2 years from May 2011 to January 2013 and most of that time I lived in a tent. In London, England. Most of the time it was ok, especially in the summer. The winter wasn’t so good with the rain making the ground muddy outside and snow occasionally in the winter of 2012. Like everything else there was good and bad things about it. Great video!!
