You got to admit that the medieval period, especially around the 16th and 17th centuries mark was a fascinating time. It was an era where religion and superstition held as much power as the thing you call science today, and that resulted in some bizarre practices and unexpected events. This offered great potential for the fantasy sci-fi genre and the sword and sorcery genre in particular. Robert E. Howard is a legend in his own rights, and he was the one to cultivate the immense potential of premising fiction in this era. He is often hailed as the father of the sword and sorcery genre, and the fans have loved his immortal creations such as Conan the Barbarian.
Another one of his unforgettable creations is Solomon Kane and the adventures based around him. This was a Puritan who roamed the world simply to fight the evil forces and thus, his journeys and adventures were plentiful. Most of the Solomon Kane stories were published in Weird Tales, an American fantasy and horror fiction pulp magazine that printed works of promising writers like Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. Besides some fascinating stories, there has also been a live-action adaptation and Solomon Kane became popular as a brand. In this video, we will explore the origin of this mysterious hero, his adventures, and also the feature film based upon this character.

Solomon Kane seems perfect material for an HBO style series. With how popular series like Game of Thrones, The Witcher, Vikings, Lost Kingdom, Solomon Kane would fit right in. I am really shocked no one has tried to make it a solid 8-10 episode series.

James Purefoy also made a pretty badass Black Prince in 2001's A Knights Tale. I think he should have done a movie focusing on Prince Edward the Black Prince. Hell they did several movies and games on Joan of Arc. The Black Prince could be considered the father of modern conceptions of Chivalry and the "Noble Knight". The story of how he "won his spurs" is one of the best stories out there.

Howard also wrote Kull the Conqueror, Bran Mak Morn and Red Sonja. Apart from Sonja the characters are described similarly enough that is almost like the same character living through adventures in different times. All were described as tall, black haired and blue eyed, very strong, agile and experts with the weapons of their time. Probably not coincidentally Howard matched the general description and was interested in boxing, fencing and pistol shooting.

“It has fallen upon me, now and again in my sojourns through the world, to ease various evil men of their lives.” Such a casual summing up of a life long mission. Kane is arguably my favorite REH character even over Conan, and it's his faith and determination that endear him to me every time. REH is arguably the greatest American fantasy writer who ever lived, IMO, at his best anyway. A pity that movie didn't do well enough to keep it moving, because I liked the story it told; REH never really fleshed out Kane's back story and I like the redemption arc they gave him. James Purefoy did a fantastic job embodying Kane as well, and fun fact? In the opening battle sequence, he insisted upon having Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" blasting on speakers nice and loud to help get him in the mood. Points, he made them with me!

I don't mean to be anal but the 16th to 17th century period was not medieval, but instead known the Early-Modern/Renaissance period. The Middle Ages are generally considered to lasted from 500-1450AD.

Yes, Solomon Kane is a Puritan, as in a Calvinist PROTESTANT. The Protestant reformation hadn't happened yet in the middle ages.
@beauleidig8670

I was thinking the same thing. There seem to be may people who are confused about when the medieval period took place. It may have to do with people just assuming that anything involving swords and armor is medieval, not realizing how long it took for those things to be made fully obsolete by firearms.

Correct, Kane's time frame is one of the most unique things about this particular character of Howard's works. Still a good video, and a nice look at a very under-rated film. Now everyone needs to go and buy the original Solomon Kane story collection published by Del Rey books!

Mr. Purefoy was born for that role, and I felt that a trilogy would've cemented Solomon Kane's popularity right up there is his Hyborean cousin Conan. Robert E. Howard was a sci-fi/ fantasy genius, who's work was so far ahead of it's time. Solomon Kane has so much potential, a video game series, if done right, would be fun as Hell. And in a perfect world, Mr Purefoy would Don the Hat and Cape, and bump back against the creatures that bump in the night. Thank you for the video! It was a very entertaining,and knowledgeable piece for one of my absolute favorite pulp fiction heros!

Loved the movie adaptation of Solomon Kane. It is a true shame it was not received better than it was. I believe that greatest contributing factor as to why Solomon Jane was not well received when it released was because it came out in the year 2009. People just where not ready for it. If it had been released nowadays it would have most likely have had a far better following due to other popular shows like The Witcher, Game of Thrones and Vikings to name just a few. I'm not as familiar with the comics, but will hopefully get around to reading them one day.

It’s amazing how many characters took from Kane like the Van Helsing film, aspects of the Witcher, Vampire Hunter D, pretty much any monster-hunting badass in comics, film and television, Captain Kronos, and Mathias Thulmann from Warhammer. Considering how much his image and archetype has been recycled for decades, I’m surprised so many haven’t heard of him.

Thanks for covering this character by Robert E. Howard. I feel the movie never found it's audience because of a lack luster effort by studio executives to promote it. I picked it up on DVD, but watched it on RU-vid movies. Purefoy does a good job with the character (although I fail to understand why he has to look like he needs a bath all the time). The hat (which could have been broader) and cape are trademarks to his look, as well as the wooden staff. The promotional poster nailed the look, especially the twin pistols in his belt, but he always looked like he just dug his way out of a heap of mud. i blame the director for that. Not sure if he read the original stories. Perhaps someone else will eventually do a better job bringing Kane to the big screen. Meanwhile, we still have Howard's books being reprinted all the time.

Solomon Kane is slowly gaining ground over Conan and honestly I love this character a lot more than Conan, he's a dower puritan who fights evil in all it's forms and I'd love for another go at the movies, maybe the castle of the devil or a good old swashbuckling escapade into the old ottoman empire or they could do the vampire queen next.

Love that movie. Wish they made more of them, which would have been easy with so much great source material. Only pet peeve in this movie is when Solomon is crucified and the nails in his hands have no heads, meaning he could have easily freed himself. It bugged me.
@andybrown4284
@andybrown4284 2 года назад
Nails through the hands is an artistic quirk, crucifixions were either tied by ropes (the more common option since rope is cheaper than iron) or nails between the bones of the forearm. The hand doesn't have the structural strength to hang a body by a nail for long enough to kill them and even with the wrist ropes would get used to keep them on the cross.

You think maybe the movie failed because: (1) the character wasn't well known and some people are leery of characters they don't know (despite claims that people want new things and not so many remakes) and (2) that he's religious and Hollywood's well-known aversion to Christianity? Great movie. I'd love a Netflix series of this with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, James McAvoy or Michael Fassbender in the title role.

Solomon Kane was actually a decent movie regarding how all the other movies of today seems to be s*** here lately, but not this movie!" If I'm not mistaken I think this movie is still free to watch on RU-vid!

You didn't mention that Solomon Kane's look was swiped in the 2004 Van Helsing movie, Hugh Jackman's character has a slouch hat, dressed in a black coat, and fights the supernatural. The comics were shown, the first one was Monsters Unleashed #1 (1973) adapting "Skull in the Stars", "The Hills of the Dead" was in Kull and the Barbarians #2-3 (1975), Marvel Premiere #33-34 had "Red Shadows", and "The Footfalls Within" was adapted in Marvel Preview #19 (1979). In 2008, Dark Horse adapted Howard's "The Castle of the Devil", following it was the limited series Death's Black Riders. The next series was Red Shadows in 2011.

Awesome! I was just reading up on SK as he has inspired a character of my own creation

I think I still have the (or at least one of the) comics where Conan meets Solomon Kane, and they fight together.

As an aside, Marvel adapted many Kane stories into comic form during the 70s and 80s, particularly in Savage Sword of Conan and a six-issue limited series. They're worth checking out

I'm such a huge fan of the 2009 movie with James Purefoy. It's disappointing that there won't be a film series, but I still hope the likes of Conan can make it to success in the future and maybe just maybe there could be a Solomon Kane continuation of some sort.

If mister Howard was alive today he would ashamed of the writing in todays fiction; that he would say hold my whiskey and would write even more amazing characters and stories that Nickelodeon and Disney would have to create a network something similar to CN's Adult Swim just to tell these amazing and awesome stories.

This movie came out at the wrong time I think...If it was release today even as a Netflix film I believe it would do good. I wish they would give it another chance and finish the trilogy if not for the theaters make it for streaming because it was a pretty good movie in my opinion
