Solved: Center Lock Clicking Noise (Porsche or Lamborghini) Street "Center" Lug Bolt

Center locks are a great race technology, but when translated to the street, it just is causing problems. Mostly from poor training of the technicians. Center Locks should be right hand thread on one side of the car, left hand thread on the other side of the car to prevent the wheels from coming loose under hard braking. This would be too complicated for automotive technicians, or so VW/Audi thought. They instead made all the center locks right hand thread and added a locking pin to lock the lug to the hub. This system often times doesn't fully engage, causing them to come loose and click. Another way they make noise, is by technicians using too much grease. This grease becomes trapped in the center lock lug nut and doesn't allow the wheel to sit flush on the hub. The wheel then moves around the hub when cornering (the grease can move around, so the lateral load causes the wheel to then move on the hub). The solution is to disassemble the center lock and clean it.

You can hit the screw vigorously on a hardwood and the conical ring will loosen. This is the official procedure.

I tried this method. But no matter how hard I hit it, it would not come apart. I believe it was due to the hard packed grease that will filling the nut.

@@HollywoodMechanic Hit the plate with the thread perpendicular to the bottom? Before doing this, turn the conical ring so that the grease separates better. I have done this successfully many times.

@@hans-uwebaumann8183 yes. Exactly as you're describing. The grease was so packed that the wheel wasn't sitting flush on the hub so the grease was packed in jamming it in place.

Thanks for the vid as my perf just started developing this noise while turning. Will have my mechanic look into this , thanks a bunch. We need more informative vid like this on RU-vid, to avoid folks being continuously ripped off by clueless lambo dealers

Anti seize is just like you said . Only a coating to prevent seizing up. And there is different types . Copper, nickel and aluminum

You should clean all the grease off and inspect for any damage to the hub or wheel. A good way to inspect the hub is to put the car in gear and use a dial indicator to see if the hub is straight and test again to see if the brake rotor is straight (nearest to the center of the rotor as you can test with the dial gauge). Also, check the wheel for damage in the inner portion that seats on the hub lip as well as on the flat portion that presses on the brake rotor. Make sure no paint or powder coat or sand in between the wheel, hub or brake rotor. If everything is perfect, then tighten the lug nut to the recommended torque, then loosen it a quarter turn, then re apply the recommended torque again. This should resolve all the issues, or at least show you where there is a problem. If you're still having issues, you might have a different problem.

You have any experienced older aventador brake clicking noise? 2012 aventador, I already taken the rotor out and clean and lube. Im suspecting 2 piece rotor or brake pads shift noise pin loose?

There is a double sided tape that Lamborghini sells for the earlier huracan brakes. It goes between the back of the pad and the caliper pistons to keep the pads from moving when turning or going from reverse to drive. If the clicking is happening when you drive slowly in tight circles and the wheels are on properly, then you have axle or bearing issues.

@@HollywoodMechanic you 100% right on, it only happen when I 1st reverse and drive.. it make click click initial take off and it go away..

@@YouStupid69 you don't have to buy the over priced tape. You can pick up some brake quiet spray, it's a red tacky glue in a can. Remove the pads. Make sure you do not get any spray on the face, sides, or slide pin areas. Just spray a spot where the pistons are touching the pads. Make sure it's enough to see the red color, so thick, but do not get it anywhere but in the back center of the pad. Use tape to protect everywhere else. Then, wait 8 min, and install while still sticky (not dry). Don't let it rub off on sides with installing.

@@HollywoodMechanic yea I was looking at updated huracan pads, it have 3m vhb, thinking I do have 3m vhb tape at the shop! Gonna try to apply it on pads, or your way works too

All you need to do is read what the maintenance procedures are in the Porsche service manual indicating how much anti-seize to use. And trust me buddy, you will never use a screwdriver to split my Centerlock apart on my GTS. I take mine apart without tools.

Yes you can hit it on wood. It's been covered in the comments. This was before there was a bulletin or instruction in the manual. As most of my videos cover issues the dealer does not deal with yet. And no damage occurred to the centerlock.
